Introduction ZXMSG 5200 Multiplex Service Gateway is one of the major Next Generation Network (NGN) oriented products recently developed by ZTE. NGN combines the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), creating a single multi-service network.

ZXMSG 5200 is a type of integrated media access gateway but also provides narrowband and broadband services. It adds a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) module to the previous generation systems. ZXMSG 5200 adopts standard application layer and transport layer protocols to convert and handle access streams. At the same time, it is compatible with existing network devices. It provides many user side and network side interfaces for different network environments, which effectively meets the integrated services access requirements. It also provides high access multimedia services and Application Programming Interface (API) generated services.

ZXMSG 5200 can fulfill the following subscriber requirements:

High quality services, such as teleconference and fax for commercial subscribers.

NGN access gateway (AG) requirements and for upgrade MSAN equipment into AG at low costs.

Working Principle ZXMSG 5200 core technology is ‘TDM + IP’ and supports two types of switching networks:

ZXMSG 5200 working principle is as follows:

Narrowband service signals enter the TDM switching module of main control card (i.e. ICS/EICS/GIS).

TDM switch performs circuit-switching on the voice signals and send them to voice compression module.

MPR voice compression function converts voice traffic into IP packets and send them to Ethernet switching module.

Ethernet switching chip switches the IP packets and send them to CNIC for network address translation.

After network address translation, IP packets enter the IP network through an uplink interface after Ethernet switching.

Broadband data enters ICS Ethernet switching chip and directly goes to IP network through an uplink interface.

H.248 system is responsible for maintaining connection between ZXMSG 5200 and SoftSwitch (SS), interpreting and executing SS commands. H.248 describes service (CALL) and its operation logically. The CALL implements following functions.

Signal receiving and forwarding to the H.248 system

Operations maintenance and creation related with ZXMSG 5200 structure

Hardware Architecture ZXMSG 5200 hardware system consists of a control unit and a subscriber unit. The control unit implements system functions and service access expansion unit implements expansion to serve more subscribers.

System Features ZXMSG 5200 system features are as follows:

ZXMSG 5200 completely meets public telecommunication and private networks requirements. ZXMSG 5200 also provides broadband subscriber interfaces. These interfaces are used for broadband service configuration according to subscribers' requirements.

The system size is smaller. Network architecture and configuration are simple and suitable for local network optimization.

The system provides mutual backup for power supplies and active/standby backup for ICS cards. ZXMSG 5200 has two ICS cards at each layer of subscriber shelf and only one is in the active mode at a time. The one which is in the active status is called the active, while the other one is called the standby. In case of failure of the active card, the standby card takes over the system control. This process is active/standby switching, which keeps the whole system running from being affected and greatly improves the system reliability and stability.

The system capabilities are as follows:

Ethernet convergence, switching, and Ethernet L2 protocol processing

Interfaces for broadband services such as IP/xDSL

PSTN/ISDN subscriber line test and DSL subscriber line test (in coordination with an external DSL subscriber line tester)

The whole system is based on a uniform Ethernet switching platform. It implements switching of three data flows:

Intra-module control information

H.248 protocol

RTP data

This Ethernet unit is totally private, not connected to any external Ethernet, and outgoing data flows pass through the CNIC egress uniformly to ensure security.

MPR/MPRB card converts voice signals into IP packets.

ZXMSG 5200 supports 100 Mbps (FE) and 1000 Mbps (GE) Ethernet interfaces at the IP network side, which are used as egresses for narrowband media flow, H.248 protocol flow, network signal flow and broadband data flow. These four data flows can be flexibly configured on any uplink Ethernet port.

ZXMSG 5200 supports networking with multiple SoftSwitch. When many SoftSwitches are in an active/standby relation, the ZXMSG 5200 supports H.248 polling registration. When an active SoftSwitch fails, the SoftSwitch will contact a standby SoftSwitch automatically and accepts its control.

System Functions In a NGN network with SoftSwitch, ZXMSG 5200 can take the place of traditional access network in networking or to support hybrid networking with the SoftSwitch in access networks.

ZXMSG 5200 provides following functions:

The SoftSwitch to which ZXMSG 5200 is attached implements voice compressing/decompressing facsimile and more VoIP or IP FAX services under the control of H.248/MGCP.

Accesses common POTS-interface subscribers to provide narrowband voice services. Gets analog POTS-interface subscribers access to IP networks directly and implements voice/fax conversion at the analog subscriber side and voice/fax conversion at the IP network side.

Accesses to broadband interfaces like ADSL/ADSL2+, VDSL, SHDSL and Ethernet through different broadband protocols to provide broadband services.

Uses different narrowband, broadband and universal protocols for providing different services.

Provides end-to-end auto or semi-auto service configuration functions at the network side which provides easy service provisioning and adjustment.

TMS Subsystem TMS subsystem is an outsourced software package to complete the switch management functions. OS vendor provides TMS so it is functionally independent and closely related to OS.

Media Gateway Control Protocol (Megaco/H.248) The Media Gateway Control Protocol (Megaco) is a result of joint efforts of the IETF and the ITU-T Study Group. Therefore, the IETF defined Megaco is the same as ITU-T Recommendation H.248.

Megaco/H.248 addresses the relationship between the Media Gateway (MG), which converts circuit-switched voice to packet-based traffic. Megaco/H.248 instructs Media Gateway, to connect Packet Data Network (PDN) packet stream to Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) packet. Megaco/H.248 architecture is similar to Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) and the controller-to-gateway relationship, but Megaco/H.248 supports a broader range of networks, such as ATM.

There are two basic components in Megaco/H.248: terminations and contexts. Terminations represent streams entering or leaving the MG such as analog telephone lines, RTP streams, or MP3 streams. Terminations have properties, such as the maximum size of a jitter buffer, which can be inspected and modified by the Media Gateway Controller (MGC).

Terminations are placed into contexts, when two or more termination streams are mixed and connected together. Contexts are created and released by the MG under command of the MGC. A context is created by adding the first termination, and it is released by removing (Subtracting) the last termination.

For more than one stream termination, context provides multi-stream context. Audio, video, and data streams may exist in a context among several terminations.

Protocol Structure - Megaco/H.248 (Media Gateway Control Protocol)

Megaco/H.248 uses a series of commands to manipulate terminations, contexts, events, and signals. The following is a list of the commands:

1. Add - The Add command adds a termination to a context. The Add command on the first Termination in a Context is used to create a Context.

2. Modify - The Modify command modifies the properties, events, and signals of a termination.

3. Subtract - The Subtract command disconnects a Termination from its Context and returns statistics on the Termination's participation in the Context. The Subtract command on the last Termination in a Context deletes the Context.

4. Move - The Move command atomically moves a Termination to another context.

5. Audit - The Audit command returns the current state of properties, events, signals, and statistics of Terminations.

6. Notify - The Notify command allows the Media Gateway to inform the Media Gateway Controller of the occurrence of events in the Media Gateway.

Introduction ZXMSG 5200 fully supports narrowband voice, data access at different rates, and broadband access modes such as xDSL. It meets subscriber demands and provides customized services according to different telecommunication service demands and customer groups. ZXMSG 5200 supports analog subscriber’s access and subscriber side switches. The subscriber signaling is Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) signals or line status signals. ZXMSG 5200 supports direct subscriber access (when a subscriber switch is used), thus posing no special restriction on the supplementary services.

Figure 9 shows the flow of PSTN service though V5 interface.

V5-ISDN Service

ZXMSG 5200 provides ISDN service through V5 interface. It has restrictions neither on bearer and supplementary services of B channel nor packet and supplementary services of D channel. In case where the ZXMSG 5200 convergence service is not adopted, a V5 interface is used between a switch and ZXMSG 5200 to access the ISDN subscribers directly to the switch.

VOIP-PSTN Service

ZXMSG 5200 interconnects with SS and Stored Program Control (SPC) switch through H.248 and V5 protocol and provides various PSTN subscriber interfaces.

ZXMSG 5200 provides PSTN access via various ALC cards. It supports basic services such as Centrex and CID as well as various supplementary services under the coordination of SS.

ZXMSG 5200 uses three types of cards to provide public call access.

ALC

ALC card supports public call access. It supports 32 analog subscriber ports.

RALC

RALC card supports public call access. It supports 32 subscribers. It has a reverse polarity function.

FLC

FLC card supports public call access. Each FLC supports 16 subscribers. It provides 16 KC/12 KC pulse control function. It supports remote subscriber access.

VOIP-ISDN Service

ZXMSG 5200 provides ISDN BRA (2B+D) and (30B+D) access (via the DLC card). It supports all ISDN services, including videotext, fax, and internet access, as well as multiple ISDN supplementary services under coordination of SS.

Each DLCC digital subscriber card supports eight ISDN subscribers. When accessing to upper layer NGN, ZXMSG 5200 supports H.248 and IUA protocols. ZXMSG 5200 interacts with SS controller via H.248 and IUA protocol messages to perform ISDN calls.

Fax Service over IP

The ZXMSG 5200 system supports T.38 relay mode and T.30 VBD mode. It uses SoftSwitch (SS) to select or convert fax function.

SS controls connection services for a media gateway and/or local IP endpoints. It indicates whether the system is switched over to fax mode. Access Gateway (AG) equipment does not switch automatically to the fax mode. It only reports the fax tone to SS.

Figure 11 shows IP fax service access in T.30 VBD mode.

ADSL technology is asymmetric. It allows more downstream bandwidth from central office to customer site than upstream. Asymmetry, combined with always-on access (eliminating the call setup), makes ADSL ideal for internet/intranet surfing, video-on-demand, and remote LAN access. These application users can download much more information than they upload.

ADSL rates expand existing access capacity by a factor of 50 or more without new cabling. ADSL can literally transform the existing public information network from one limited to voice, text, and low-resolution graphics to a powerful system capable of bringing multimedia, including full motion video to every home.

ADSL2+ Service

ADSL2+ is a new generation of ADSL broadband service access technology. It doubles the bandwidth used to carry downstream data.

ADSL2+ provides 24 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. ADSL2+ uses high frequency up to 2.2 MHz. ADSL2+ applies to transmission with asymmetric rate. It delivers speed up to 20 times faster than the typical broadband services over copper line networks. ZXMSG 5200 provides ADSL 2+ service.

Besides the above three modes, ADSL2+ also supports following three modes below. Frequency band is further divided into smaller sub-bands.

annex I:

It is compatible to complete digital mode of ADSL over POTS (annex A) frequency spectrum. The available uplink band can be expanded from 3 kHz to 138 kHz if there is no POTS service on line. It supports 31 sub-bands at the maximum. The maximum uplink rate exceeds 1 Mbps.

annex J:

It is compatible to the complete digital mode of ADSL over ISDN (annex B) frequency spectrum. The available uplink band can be expanded from 3 kHz to 276 kHz if there is no ISDN service on the line. It supports 64 sub-bands at the maximum. The utmost uplink rate reaches to 2.3 Mbps.

annex M:

It is ADSL over POTS with the expanded uplink bandwidth. The uplink sub-band starts from 6. The sub-bands end at 32, 36, 40, 44 to 63 according to different bandwidth requirements. The total transmission power keeps the same, only the sub-band distribution is different. In this way, 3 Mbps uplink rate is available. For the downlink, the frequency is overlap and non-overlap similar to annex B.

Compared with ADSL, ADSL2+ supports higher rate, wider frequency and more sub-bands (512 sub-bands). The maximum downlink rate can reach to 24 Mbps. If ADSL2 annex J is used, the uplink rate is increased to 2.3 Mbps.

ADSL2+ supports longer transmission distance. For ADSL, the longest transmission distance is less than 6 km. For ADSL2+, the longest transmission distance is 6.5 km.

ADSL2+ provides power management function as follows:

Reduce the noise tolerance beyond requirements by decreasing transmission power consumption. Decrease useless power consumption on precondition of ensuring stable operation.

Add the low consumption mode L2 mode. Decrease the transmission power consumption in case that no subscriber data is transmitted. Ensure the necessary power consumption for transmitting required management message and synchronous signal. Resume the power consumption when subscriber data transmits. The power consumption of MSAG 5200 is about 30% of that in usual operation when it is running in L2 mode.

The central office (CO) and customer premises equipment (CPE) of ADSL2+ has the power cut back function. The power attenuation ranges from 0 dB to 40 dB. The transmission power consumption can be effectively cut down

when the transmission power is too large, ensuring the normal receiving of data.

ADSL2+ has more stable running and frequency compatibilities, which are as follows:

Receiver decides carrier sequence and pilot tone upon the channel analysis. Its results can truly reflect the channel situation and select the best tone as pilot which is useful to stable ADSL connection.

The receiver can test RFI distribution by RFI closing tone channels or controls the transmit power of tone through CO-MIB. It effectively avoids RFI and reduces the interference on ambient devices.

Fine dynamic adaptability.

The bit swapping and line rate changes dynamically enhancing the adaptability to changeable line parameters.

Less time to resume connection from faults.

ADSL2+ supports test function at both ends. The following parameter can be tested:

Based on different functions, ADSL2+ classifies ADSL transceivers into TPS-TC (transmission protocol related convergence sub-layer), PMS-TC (physical medium related convergence sub-layer), PMD (physical medium related sub-layer), and MPS-TC (management protocol related convergence sub-layer, used for NM interface). Encapsulating each sub-layer and defining the message among sub-layers helps implementing networking of various devices from different factories.

VDSL Service

VDSL (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line) provides high-bandwidth access, applying to the transmission with symmetric rate and asymmetric rate. VDSL transmits high-speed data through the existing subscriber telephone line. It provides voice, video and data through multimedia network.

VDSL transmits voice and data service simultaneously on the same subscriber line with the Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) mode. At the both ends of subscriber lines, splitter separates the voice signal from the data signal. The VDSL band is independent of POTS service band, therefore has no influence on POTS service and network distribution. VDSL band is divided into the uplink band and the downlink band. In addition, it has a

SHDSL technology provides high-speed symmetric data service on a single pair or two pairs of twisted pairs. SHDSL technology can transport data symmetrically at data rates from 192 Kbps to 2,320 Kbps or 2.3 Mbps. SHDSL utilizes a single copper wire pair, making it an affordable DSL option attractive to small businesses.

ZXMSG 5200 also provides SDL card to support the SHDSL (based on ATM). Each SDL card provides 16 SHDSL ports. Subscriber information is converted into IP packets to transmit

SHDSL features are as follows:

SHDSL supports symmetrical data across a single pair of copper wire at data rates from 192 kbps to 2.3 Mbps or 384 kbps to 4.6 Mbps.

Maximum transmission distance is 3 km to 6 km.

ITU recommends G.991.2 and ANSI T1E1.4/2001-174 as SHDSL standards.

Ethernet service feature high bandwidth and less delay. Ethernet has survived as the major LAN technology (it is currently used for approximately 85 percent of the world's LAN-connected PCs and workstations).

Ethernet is used for UTP-5 medium-based 100BaseTx Ethernet equipment access.

Ethernet refers to a Local Area Network (LAN) family. IEEE 802.3 is Ethernet compliant standard that defines CSMA/CD protocol. Ethernet twisted-pair cable defines four data rates for operation as listed below:

The communications between VLANs are through access and trunk link.

Access link:

An access link is a member of only one VLAN. In most case, access link is linked with the client station.

Trunk link:

Trunk link is also called Tagged Link, This kind of port can support multi-VLAN communication. A trunk link is capable of carrying multiple VLANs. The data frames on the trunk link are identified by using indicator.

Explicit and implicit tag:

When frames are transmitted on network, a mean is required to identify the VLAN to which a frame belongs. The mean is to add VLAN tags. Switch sends the frame only to its belonging VLAN. When a bridge receives data, it labels the data with a VLAN tag to indicate the data source. This tag is called explicit tag. Implicit tag mode is used for specific VLAN source for the data. With implicit tag, data is not tagged and source VLAN of data is specified in other modes (for example the port).

Tag header:

The frame with a tag is called a tag frame, it has a tag header. Figure 17 shows the tag header format, including two-byte Tag Protocol Identifier (TPID) and two-byte Tag

Control Information (TCI). The TPID indicates a tag header. The TCI includes subscriber priority, Canonical Format Indicator (CFI) and VLAN ID. The 3-bit subscriber priority is in a scale of 8, where 0 is the lowest and 7 the highest. The CFI bit indicates whether the MAC address in the MAC data field is a standard format, where CFI=0 indicates standard format, while CFI=1 indicates non-standard formats. The VID field indicates the VLAN ID to which the frame belongs, and has a maximum number of 4095.

VLAN ID and PVID description:

VLAN ID:

Indicates the VLAN identifier, such as VLAN 1 and VLAN 2.

PVID:

Indicates the default port’s VLAN ID. When the received frame is tagged, the PVID does not take effect because the VLAN ID is contained in the tag. When the received frame is not tagged, the PVID takes effect and is used as VLAN ID. Therefore, when the received frame is not tagged, PVID is configured in VLAN port configuration.

ZXMSG 5200 supports the following VLAN features:

VLAN based on IEEE 802.1Q:

The IEEE 802.1Q standards define an operation called tagging, that binds a 4-byte tag domain to destination and source addresses of an Ethernet frame. This tag domain includes a VLAN identity called VLAN ID. ‘VLAN based on IEEE 802.1Q’ means distinguishing between VLANs according to the VLAN ID marked in an Ethernet frame and is generally used when there are multiple VLANs cross multiple devices. ZXMSG 5200 system supports identification of tagged messages and tagging of non-tagged messages. Figure 18 shows the tag 802.1Q identification method.

VLAN trunking:

The VLANs can communicate with each other via the trunking connection between the two switches using the router. It allows multiple VLANs on one port or a group of ports. It allows a single network adapter to behave as ‘n’ number of virtual network adapters. ‘n’ has a theoretical upper limit of 4096 but is typically limited to 1000 VLAN network segments.

To implement VLAN trunking different 802.1Q tags are affix to the same port or same group of ports. The messages of different VLANs are identified and VLAN interconnection is possible.

SVLAN:

SVLAN solves the 4096 VLAN limitation. It allows a stack of two or more 802.1Q headers to be carried in an Ethernet frame. The number of VLANs is extended to more than 16 million (4096 * 4096). At the same time multiple VLANs can be multiplexed within a single core VLAN (the top .1Q tag).

Spanning Tree expansion allows fast convergence (in the order of 1 sec). However, SVLANs only provide a partial solution. If customers are given the option to define their own VLAN ID spaces, the core of the network remains limited to 4096 VLANs. Figure 19 explains the SVLAN concept.

Multicast Service

Multicast refers to point-to-multipoint communication in the network. The multicast technology implements the point-to-multipoint effective data transmission in the network. The core of multicast technology is to copy the packet as close to receiver as possible.

Source host just sends one data frame whose destination address is address of the multicast group. All receivers in the multicast group can receive same data frame copy. Other hosts in network cannot receive the data except host (destination host) in the multicast group. The multicast group is identified with Type D IP address (224.0.0.0 ~ 239.255.255.255).

Multicast features are as follows:

Lightens the server load. Server does not need to process request of each subscriber.

Saves the network bandwidth.

Minimizes the network equipment requirements.

Multiple subscribers can access same service.

In Snooping mode, the system is not responsible for management on status of multicast member. It just implements IGMP message snooping and forwarding passively. It has a little influence on the system load. However, it greatly increases protocol processing load of the uplink equipment.

In Proxy mode, the system manages status of multicast member actively, efficiently reducing the protocol load of the uplink device.

Router mode is a simplified proxy mode. In case that multicast service is directly sent to the uplink port, the system does not require uplink port for multicast service dynamically.

EPON Service

EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is combination of some optimal technologies and network architectures. Video on demand and other ‘triple-play’ services of video, voice and data require the provision of high bandwidth residential services directly to consumers. Passive Optical Networks are the next step beyond DSL and cable modems, delivering very high-speed services to consumers over an all-optical access network.

EPON provides following functions:

EPON function card provides fiber access based on EPON technology.

Single PON port supports 32 branches (20 KM) and 64 branches (<5 KM).

Downlink wavelength is 1490 nm, uplink wavelength is 1310 nm and CATV wavelength is 1550 nm.

VoIP services, CATV services, IPTV multicast services, high quality broadband, and multi-service access for residential subscribers.

It also meets fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband service requirements to accomplish the ‘three-in-one’ target. FTTH greatly promotes development of the ‘digital home’ industry.

EPON features are as follows:

Downlink rate can reach up to 1.25 Gbps. The uplink transmits data stream in Ethernet packet mode and reaches up to 1.25 Gbps.

Operation, maintenance and management functions

A typical EPON system consists of following parts:

OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is located in central office (CO).

ONU (Optical Network Unit) is located near NIU (network interface unit) or combined with NIU.

POS (Passive Optical Splitter) is a passive device connecting OLT and ONU. The function of POS is to distribute downlink data and collect uplink data.

QoS Service

Quality of Service (QoS) offers network service functions with different service qualities to meet various demands.

QoS uses following standards:

Traffic monitoring

Limited port rate

Queue

It means to identify packets and transmit them to different system devices for processing. Traffic identification with different priority features is based on the Type of Service (ToS) field in IP packet head. For example, classify packets based on information of data link layer, network layer, and transmission layer. This information includes MAC address, IP protocol type, source (host, network segment) address, destination (host, network segment), and port number of application program.

Traffic monitoring is used to monitor service flow according to classification rule at the packets receiving port. It enables service flow to adapt to the network resource allocated to it, such as bandwidth. Traffic monitoring is used for rate restriction on packets receiving port, monitoring traffic flowing to one network. If rate is too fast, traffic monitoring can discard packet or reset packet priority.

Limited port rate is used to monitor and restrict bandwidth occupied by service traffic at packet sending port. This technique enables service flow to adapt to network resource. For example limited port rate sets a rate threshold at sending port of packet.

If traffic exceeds this rate, packets will be discarded. In this way, sending rate is limited.

Queue scheduling solves the problem that multiple packets compete for network resource when packets are forwarded. Queue scheduling modes include:

Strict-Priority queue (SP)

Weighted Round Robin (WRR)

Weighted Fair Queue (WFQ)

These algorithms solve packet forwarding problems in each output queue of device port according to their own principles. ZXMSG 5200 supports these three queue scheduling modes.

Traffic mirror is used to monitor service flows according to traffic classification rule. This traffic mirror copies data packets according to traffic classification rule to monitor port, facilitate network detection, and elimination faults.

IP Service

ZXMSG 5200 supports IP subscriber’s access and connects to the IP network directly.

ZXMSG 5200 Networking The ZXMSG 5200 is a media access gateway, which is located in the Next-Generation Network (NGN) and works with other media gateways.

A next-generation network uses the IP protocol as its foundation. The ZXMSG 5200 uses H.248 protocol to communicate with the Media Gateway Controller (MGC).

Multi-Service Access Network (MSAN) provides two interfaces at the network side, for broadband and narrowband services. Broadband services access the IP network through the Ethernet interface, while narrowband services access the narrowband service through the E1 interface.

Figure 23 shows the upgrade of ZXMSG 5200 from MSAN in a narrowband and broadband network.

When the MSAN is upgraded to the ZXMSG 5200, E1 interface is replaced by a H.248 protocol. To convert the narrowband services into the IP packets for the transmission in IP network, a VOIP processor module and CNIC sub-card is added.
