Building and Construction.Building and Construction.Building and Construction. On Thursday 10th May, 36 of our upper school Building and Construction students participated in a four hour long, Safety Awareness and Training Course, held at MREC. This was presented by David Lightfoot, a representative of the Housing Industry Association. The benefits to our students are many and varied. Before any person can step foot on a building or construction site, they must have attained this qualification. A number of our students will be visiting building sites as part of their Structured Workplace Learning Program and having this qualification will allow them to legally do so. This training also included the delivery of a Unit of Competence called ‘Follow occupational health and safety policies and procedures’ which is part of the Certificate 1 in General Construction course they are studying through Building and Construction.

Matt Meets EddieMatt Meets EddieMatt Meets Eddie Recently, Matthew Dillon travelled to Melbourne to watch a few games of footy. On the way over to Melbourne Matt sat next to the Dockers players on the plane.

Whilst in Melbourne Matthew attended a training session at the Collingwood grounds where he met the players and Eddie McGuire. He took a lot of photographs and got plenty of autographs.

Matthew loved the MCG and the highlight of the trip would have to have been the ANZAC Day Blockbuster which Collingwood won!

Did you know that our Aussie Roos have the ability to choose the gender of their offspring?

Or that they have the unique ability to indefinitely put a pregnancy on hold until it suits them?

These are just some interesting facts that our budding young Biologists have discovered in recent times. Our student’s minds went into overdrive and their senses were stimulated by kangaroo research, documentary films, real life observations in the field and exposure to a kangaroo dissection conducted by our local veterinarian.

Many thanks to one of our local Margaret River Professional Shooters, Mr. Kevin Dickens, who enabled the school to obtain a suitable specimen for the purpose of our educational program. The experience gained by all was undoubtedly invaluable and memorable and extremely smelly (Oops, sorry about that !).

Many thanks to Tony Pusey for his expertise in carrying out a professional

dissection.

“One of the highlights without any doubt, was to release the birds once all measurements had

been recorded”

The expert shows how it’s

done.

We went Birdnetting … … …

It was 6am when the bus was retrieved from a local depot and made its way to the front of Margaret River Senior High School where 12 sleepy, not to mention shivering, but eager Year 12’s awaited their early morning pick up to take part in an exciting fieldwork project. Our school Principal, Mrs McNeil, joined us for this unique experience.

Tony Gurney, our friendly, school chaplain was our driver and got us to our venue right on time at 7:20am; the venue being Capel Wetlands Research Center. Upon arrival, students were briefed on the mornings’ tasks and within moments, with the aid of some on-site expertise, students found themselves busy untangling numerous birds from the previously set-up mist nets amidst the dewy, lush green forests.

Students were then required to identify their catch, sex their specimens and take accurate measurements of various factors such as wing span, mature feather counts, head/beak lengths, weights and the like. All observations made on the day were carefully recorded on data log sheets which will later be compiled and sent to a national data bank. Such invaluable research is eventually used to design and put in place national conservation strategies as deemed necessary for any particular species of bird.

One of the highlights without any doubt, was to release the birds once all measurements had been recorded, but not before they were carefully banded with an identifiable ring around one foot,

each band bearing its own individual identification code for the purpose of recognition upon potential recapture in the future.

Needless to say, this exercise provided a unique opportunity to each and every person who participated and it provided a realistic insight into the work of a B i o l o g i s t a n d t h e i n v a l u a b l e contributions that are made toward conserving a piece of our living world.

Bird species studied showed great diversity and included the Red Wattlebird, Western Spinebill, New Holland Honeyeater, Scarlet Robins, White Browed Scrub Wrens and Brown Honeyeaters.

Well done to all – we captured and released 26 birds in a mere one and a half hours!!! Even the experts said “It was close to their record!”

Student Welfare includes the physical, intellectual, emotional and social well being of all students. While parents and families have prime responsibility for the welfare of their children, the whole school community shares some of this responsibility. At Margaret River Senior High School, Student Welfare is enhanced by the support of the Student Services Team.

MRHS Student Services Team and school staff adopts the principles of prevention and intervention. Promoting students’ self-esteem while assisting them to develop responsibility for their own behaviour serves our goal of providing a safe environment for all students.

Students also learn to be responsible for their own behaviour through a sequence known as BMIS (Behaviour Management in Schools). This system, used for certain inappropriate behaviours, is based on contracts, with a plan for behaviour change. This involves the student, teacher/s, and after an initial stage, parents.

We endeavour to provide as much support as we can for our students. We enlist the cooperation of parents and other community links such as youth workers, indigenous workers, the police and government agencies. A variety of programs are utilised on an as required basis to assist students.

Our Student Services staff are responsible for:

Monitoring of student behaviour & attendance. Working with students, parents and teachers to modify unacceptable behaviour and encourage acceptable behaviour.

∗ The monitoring of student progress:

∗ Pastoral and academic counselling

∗ Parent contact regarding student counselling and referral

∗ The monitoring of student behaviour and welfare

∗ New student induction

∗ Organisation of social events

MENTORING NEWS

CHAPLAINS CORNER

7

At the heart of every community is a group of people who give their time to others, and the mentoring programme at Margaret River Senior High School benefits from this generosity. Every week community members give one hour a week to help students, sharing their talents, skills and wisdom or helping with academic work.

Mentors develop a relationship with their student, one that is characterised by mutual trust and respect, and based on fun, encouragement and a willingness to learn and share.

As the new co-ordinator, I would like to thank all the mentors who so generously donate their time and bring their dedication, enthusiasm and motivation to support our students, the students for their commitment and enthusiasm in participating, and members of the school community for their support, patience and confidence in the program.

If you would like to know more about the program, to recommend a student to it, or to join as a mentor, please contact me on Wednesdays at Student Services.

First term went by as fast as 2006 did, there are a lot of good things happening around the school at the moment. One of these things being the students’ positive involvement in the upcoming Country Week , a special mention of the Country Week girls soccer team which I have the privilege of coaching, you guys are putting in a fantastic effort.

It is with sadness and regret that I have tendered my resignation and will be leaving school at the end of this term.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank this wonderful community for all your support during

my time here. It’s been a huge learning time for me and I am looking forward to what the future holds.

I would like to encourage you all to give the new chaplain as much support as you all have given me, thank you, thank you, thank you!

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Year 10 Careers Education

The upper school food production classes visited Olio Bello in March. Their first assessment task was to investigate the Olive Oil Industry in Margaret River and the team at Olio Bello gave an extremely informative talk. They also kindly donated 6 beautiful bottles of their quality olive oil for the students to use in cooking. Adrian Spelt who is the manager was very entertaining and obviously very passionate about his olive oil. The students then sat down for a sumptuous meal of home made pasta with various delicious flavourings. A very successful excursion which has i n s p i r e d t h e s t u d e n t s enormously.

The Arts Faculty have had a busy semester completing curriculum programs as well as their involvement in community events. Term One saw the Music Department, under the leadership of Bruce Godden organise a wonderful School Spectacular at Leeuwin Estate. All the music and vocal students from the school were involved, as well as Year 9 - 12 dancers and art students who produced a wonderful music garden. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the students to see the amazing musical talents of various artists throughout the state. A very successful afternoon by all involved.

Last Sunday 6th of May many students were involved in the Vintage Stomp at Voyager Estate. Even though the heavens opened up on numerous occasions it didn't stop our dance and drama students from producing an excellent standard of performance. The Year 10 drama students wandered throughout the gardens as Human Sculptures and have received very positive accolades. The Year 10 dancers performed an African tribal dance while the upper school dancers reminisced from last year grooving to a Street Latin. They were also involved in the parade with a group of Year 9 dancers who did a character dance as lawn mowers, grape pickers and grape stompers. The Art students from Year 9-12 produced some amazing African masks, huts and pottery to coincide with the Stomps theme of South Africa. These were displayed beautifully but had to moved continually because of the constant drizzle or threat of rain.

Thank you to all the students and parents who have helped to make these events a success.

I would also like to thank the Art staff for their work this semester, especially their extra commitment to both the Schools Spectacular and Vintage Stomp.

Indonesian students on going project One of our students project is sponsoring “Dharma Jati I” Bali Orphanage. We work together with nurses around Southwest area leading by Susanne Hunter in supporting the orphanage. Last term we have collected pencils, pens, paper, books, toys, etc. One of our year 9 students has brought all the collections to the orphanage on his holiday in Bali. We also have a class of Indonesian Language tutoring for students and their parents every Monday to support the project. All the money receives from the tutoring will proceed to the orphanage. Our special thanks to Mr Eric Barnard and Mary Elton and her students from Cowaramup PS, and to our students who were involved in the project.

Bapak Gede Sutanya At the end of the first term we have had Bapak Gede Sutanya, an Indonesian teacher from Bali in the classroom for four days. He is in WA for a month as “Adopt A School” program sponsored by Australia Indonesia Institute and visited Margaret River SHS and Cowaramup PS for a week. Our students have been introduced to Indonesian culture through “Kecak Dance”. They were very enthusiastic to learn the dance and the melody in classroom. Our special thanks to Peter Howse, the Principal from Cowaramup PS and Mary Elton, Indonesian Language Teacher from Cowaramup PS for their hospitality in hosting our students on their excursion to Cowaramup PS for the “Kecak Dance Performance.

Ibu Dayu Once again we have been very fortunate to have had another Indonesian teacher from Bali for the second term. Ibu Dayu has showed the students how to dress in Balinese traditional costumes. She also performed Balinese Welcome Dance to the students. Ibu Dayu was very impressed with the students’ enthusiasm in learning the “Poco-poco” dance. She is in WA as a part of Reciprocal Teacher Visit (RTV) arranged through Westralian Indonesian Language Teachers Association (WILTA). She teaches Indonesian and English at Indonesia Australia Language Foundation (IALF) Denpasar, Bali.

Planning and preparation for Country Week 2007 is already well under way with only 9 weeks to go. This year Margaret River Senior High School is fielding a reduced team across a number of sports, with team members coming exclusively from upper school. The 67 member team will be staying at the newly refurbished Perth Youth Hostel in the Perth city centre. Training is well under way for all teams. Special thanks to goes to coaches and players for their regular attendance at training and meetings during a very busy time of the year. Final touches are being done in respect to costs and travel and these details on itineraries, fundraising and fixtures will be sent to parents shortly. A major raffle is currently running as a means of fundraising that can earn students up to $200. I would like to acknowledge the support of these local businesses which have helped us thus far, and I hope that there are other businesses willing to provide us with team sponsorship or donations to assist us in our bid to reduce costs. Please support them too.

On the last day of term 1 our school held its annual House Athletics carnival for 2007. The weather gods smiled upon us that day and the students looked resplendent in their fancy apparel. They came in their droves to compete, have fun, participate and simply celebrate the end of a hard terms work. There was music, dance, food and drink and more importantly there was participation and enjoyment. There was also some outstanding efforts by individual athletes who have already received their medallions at school.

Many records were broken on the day of the carnival , this further highlights some of the tremendous sporting talent we have at the school. These records are as follows;

School Uniform With the cold weather here just a quick reminder to parents.

Margaret River Senior High School takes great pride in its image among the general community and the security that is provided by having all students

wearing uniform. It is understood that occasionally events occur that make it impossible for uniform to be worn. If your child is unable to attend school wearing uniform or they have inappropriate footwear

then it is required that you supply a note from home to be presented at Student Services before school. This will help avoid any disruption to your child’s learning program.

The P & C uniform shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday Morning 8.30 am – 9:00 am and all enquiries are welcome.

School Ethos Margaret River Senior High School is a government school, which proudly accepts its egalitarian responsibility to maximize the learning of every student. It seeks to embrace the community in the learning process, viewing the community as partners. The ethos of our school means every individual student will feel they are respected and secure and that the learning they experience will equip them for successful participation in society and the economy now and in the rapidly changing future.

We are committed:

To strive for excellence in a comprehensive curriculum which will cater for the learning needs of all secondary students in the Augusta Margaret River Shire.

To acknowledge through our learning activities our responsibility to educate children to become citizens of the local, state, national and international communities.

To encourage and foster participation by the community in the learning processes within our school and participation by students in the activities of the community.

In fulfilling our objectives, students will leave our school with high level skills and learning in a broad range of areas. They will be healthy in mind and body, having a clear understanding of their own value to society and a sense of obligation to their family, their country and the wider community.
