CURRICULUM CORNER

STEM

Over the last two years, Even Swindon has been working hard to embed a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) focus into the curriculum. We have recognised that STEM is growing so important because it increasingly encompasses every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By exposing the children to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will hopefully develop a passion for it and may choose to pursue it further in the future, building our next generation of Scientists and Engineers. STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for the student. This year, we have had LEGO STEM focus, with the children being able to design and code machines using Lego. Thanks to the multi-talented Mr Rouse, we are also the proud owners of a lovely Lego wall next to the first aid room. The children have been exploring this during break times and lunch times.

Next week (20th-24th May) is STEM week, this year we have a technologies focus and each year group will be trying out some of the new technology we have in school, including BeeBots, Dataloggers, InoBots and WeDO LEGO. The children will also be filming some 'how-to' videos to explain how the technology works- keep your eyes peeled for this on the website.

If you would like to explore some STEM activities at home with your child, there are some great websites with activity ideas;

https://codecombat.com/ A brilliant site to learn coding while playing an adventure game.

https://www.lego.com/en-gb/products/categories/stem Designs and activities for STEM using LEGO.

https://thestemlaboratory.com/stem-activities-for-kids/

A brilliant site with lots of STEM activities to try at home.

Swindon Sports Camp is pleased to announce that we will be offering an exciting multi-sports camp in your

area. The Sports Camp is for all abilities with a real emphasis on allowing the children to choose their own

activities and having fun!

The camp will run from 8:45am to 3:00pm throughout the school holidays.

Come and join us for days full of fun, activities and friendship. Activities may include: Football, Netball,

Dodgeball, Rounders, Team Building, Crafts and lots more.

Please ensure that your child has suitable sports clothing and footwear for all weather conditions; we like to

spend a lot of time outside, even in the winter months! Children will also need a packed lunch and a water bottle

to stay hydrated throughout the day.
