(ask participants to hold cell phone in their hand) Let’s pause for a moment Blessing of our Cell Phones Blessed are You, eternal God, King of the universe: You have called us in Jesus to be Your beloved people, living pure and blameless lives in Your sight. Bless + this cell phone. Let your Spirit guide our words, texts, photos and videos so that the light of Christ may shine before all and lead all who receive them to give You praise. May our words, texts, photos and videos be filled with the spirit of love, with the obedience of faith, and the strength of hope. Make our lives be joyful in Your service, and bring those we connect with closer to You. Father all-holy, we praise Your Name, and ask this blessing through Christ our Lord. Amen. This prayer is adapted from the Family Blessing at - http://www.catholicdoors.com/prayers/english/p01096.htm Please put your phone on silence to vibrate so they wont bother you tonight.
Caroline Today’s F2F time is two hours in order to cover today’s material. Ordinarily, the Webinar time will be a one hour time period. You will then be able to go to our class blog to read further about the material and then to go to the Wiki to complete your assignments. Often, depending on your skill level, some assignments will take less time than others. Our goal is to exercise and sharpen our digital skills so that we become more and more comfortable with the digital language and culture that surrounds us. Please feel free – during the week to: Contact your instructors if you need assistance. Locate a high school or college age student to mentor you Contact a classmate who may be more skilled in an area to assist you with the assignment Our goal is to become a community of learners who will support one another and to be there for one another. We are the new disciples, learning how to fish in new waters!

After completing this module, you will be able to:
• Utilize a mobile device as a learning tool.
• Embrace and acknowledge new technologies, rather than ignore or fear the new literacy.
• Promote digital etiquette through the use of a cell phone or tablet for learning opportunities.
• Find useful ways to integrate these mobile devices as knowledge construction, data collection, and collaborative communication tools into faith learning.
Mobile devices encompass several different types of devices such as the cell phone, smart phone, iPod, iPad and various e-readers. Through a wireless connection this combination of devices become what is known as a Bring Your Own Device environment. This would be an entire module unto it self. But of these devices, the most prevalent is the cell phone.
For the purpose of this webinar we will focus on the cell phone and the wonderful and innovative ways we can use them to enhance learning and general experience of an event. There are many different types of phones on the market, however even the most basic phone today comes equipped with a camera and the ability to text. Of course this varies by the plan that is attached to that device.
The resource for the presentation tonight is Toys to Tools: Connecting Student Cell Phones to Education. To purchase a copy you can click on the link or search for it on the internet. Even if you work with adults it really has wonderful and adaptive ideas that can be used at any age.
• 74%: Percentage of US teens 9-12 grade that carry cell phones (Aug. 2010 The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project)
• 59%: Percentage of US middle school students who care cell phones(Aug. 2010 The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project)
• These numbers will only increase as cell phones become more affordable and available to students

Project Tomorrow- study results complied through the National Center for Educational Statistics. They started in 2010 and published findings in Feb of 2011. Through the 3 new trends in teaching- Mobile Learning, Online and Blended Learning (DDBC is a perfect example of this) and E-Textbooks melt together creating the 3 E’s of learning for today’s students…Enabling them to learn at any time, Engaging them in learning and seeking information and Empowering them to create a new generation of Life Long Learners!
So what does this chart tell you about how teens and young adults communicate. In one job I had at if you didn’t text you didn’t work. This were people in their early 20’s. The same group that we are missing often in church.
Now let’s look at the number so texts adult vs. teen. The average number of texts per month for at teen/ early 20’s is 3339! After I saw this numbers I found that I communicated much better with my own kids by text. It’s amazing what happens when we learn to speak their digital language.
• SMARTPHONE USERS: 65% of grades 6-8 students and 80% in grades 9-12 own them – one main concern is how to use them for academics.
• MIDDLE SCHOOL DIGITAL READERS: From 2011-2012, the number of owners more than doubled from 17% to 39%.
• MIDDLE SCHOOL PERSONAL TABLETS: From 2011-2012, the number of owners more than doubled, to 52%
• WHAT DEVICES ARE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALLOWED TO USE?– Just 50% of smartphone owners– Only 9% of personal tablets owners– Only 18% of seniors are allowed to use personal laptops at school.
We are now dealing with a generation that is completely ok with sharing just about everything…the good and the bad. They click on the answers. They communicate in completely new way…how do you choose to minister to them? And we need to know how to get and keep the lines of communication open. We need to model digital citizenship
“Chandler-Olcott and Mahar (2003) assert that classrooms that integrate technology-mediated literacy practices within everyday social learning communities have the potential to promote more academically related interests within the school than classrooms lacking such integration.”

Presentation Notes
Through the use of technology there is an increase in achievement environments that do not use technology. Now think about the tools available to you in your teaching or ministry environment.
So let’s keep all these words in mind when we think about the areas we work in. We have … It is going on everywhere else and we need to get moving. No it wont be needed at all times. But as in our blessing we can see that there is both good and bad. It’s all how you use it.
This resource will help you outline Digital Etiquette as well as help address some of the concerns that will arise. They have a good section on Podcasting, which as you can guess can be as high tech as can be, but with the use of a cell phone can quite simple and effective. You can look and say well all this is fine for a school setting our your classroom, but I teach religious ed. Well those children live in a tech driven world and when we say or plan that way, we are telling the students in a way that the tech world they live in can’t be blended. this is what they know and how they learn. Don’t we run the risk of teaching them that our Catholic Faith is obsolete. Let’s create an environment of “mashups”. Taking the best of both and creating a new and vibrant experience. So if there is a project for History-how can adapt that and make it apply to my area.
– Upon entry and departure of class please ensure cell phones are turned off and stored in your backpack.
– On days when we are using cell phones for learning please ensure they are set to silent.
– Only use phones for learning purposes related to classwork.– When phones are not in use on a day we are using cells for learning place them face
down on the upper right side of your desk. – If you notice someone in the class using their cell phone inappropriately, remind them
to use proper cell phone etiquette.– If at any time your teacher feels you are not using your cell phone for class work you
will be asked to place your phone in the bin in the front of the room with a post-it indicating your name and class.
• After the first infraction each month you can collect your phone at the end of class.
• After the second infraction you can collect your phone at the end of the day. • After the third infraction your parent or guardian will be asked to retrieve your
phone. If you use the phone inappropriately again during the month your parent or guardian will be required to retrieve your phone.
• At the beginning of each month, you have a clean slate.
• Adapt to fit your classroom setting

Went to DC and thought about how multicultural our country is… and how many kids have never seen a portrait of Mary other than Italian Ren. Style Mary brings us closer to Jesus and so I took some photos of various places in the Basilica.
Mary appears in various countries and cultures to bring us closer to Jesus.

So here it is…and one of the nice things is after the students watch the video they can comment on it. You can sent it to them at home. Or it can be an activity they can do at home.
Yes you are able to show your Animoto film with this equipment!

Great for YouTube videos. We have done a wonderful YouTube Teen Stations of the Cross this way in our Middle School Youth Group. It does NOT WORK to show an app- like Ignio- share a Bible verse. That you need apple TV for. This is without internet access-you would be using your iPhone safari. Super easy. Test out the space you will be using this in first. If your phone calls get dropped in that space…you will get a lot of buffering, when the video starts and stops a lot. So just do a test run first.
• (Pg. 72) Blogger.com – Can immediately post photos to a blog to create a Web journal.

With a cell phone you can post photos immediately to a blog Pg 72 has the steps to do that. This is great with a little older students. With you being the editor or moderator of the blog you can remove any posts that are inappropriate. You can give them the freedom to work on the project, but at the same time are able to teach them about responsibility.
• (Pg. 73) Photobucket.com – Post pictures to the web from a cell phone
• Can post directly to your private space• Allows photo postings from any cell phone to one
account by giving a unique e-mail address for the account.
• Allows teachers to have more control over the photo postings.
• Can also send video to the private Photobucket account.
• Can create picture slide shows – with audio, transitions, effects, and titles.

Maybe at a church event…like our Oktoberfest. The students can have fun and the event will taking photos and uploading them to Photobucket. You can even have videos . In most public events permissions isn’t needed for photos because it’s in a public space, but always check with your parish. Our parish we always check for kids in photos that we know have signed our diocesan waiver with a “no” for photos in FF or Youth Group.

NOTES: There is a service called Poll Everywhere. So lets do this * You must be using PowerPoint on Windows to show polls embedded in PowerPoint. Please use the Mac Deskbar or display your polls from PollEverywhere.com if you are on a Mac.
• Explain what’s going on– “Now I’m going to ask for your opinion. You’ll use your phones to respond just like on
American Idol. So please take out your cell phones, but remember to leave them on silent.”– “You’ll participate by sending a text message. If you don’t know how to do that, just ask your
kids! Or have your neighbor help you figure it out.”
• Address their concerns– “This is a just standard rate text message, so it may be free for you, or up to twenty cents on
some carriers if you do not have a text messaging plan.”– “The service we are using is serious about privacy. We cannot see your phone numbers,
and you’ll never receive follow-up text messages outside this presentation. There’s only one thing worse than email spam – and that’s text message spam because you have to pay to receive it!”
• Use a demo or practice poll– For example, a Free Text Poll like “Let’s Practice: Text in your first name!”
• Always test your polls in your presentation before your event using the computer that will be projecting your presentation, especially if that computer is not the one you’re currently using.

I know…you might be saying I’m not at a school- but it’s still valid for a Faith Formation / ministry environment I will send it to you after the webinar If you read it you will see how it can work for your parish as well Do you have to KNOW all this…no…but knowing what questions to ask is very helpful…this is that BYOD we mentioned earlier this evening. As more and more students have a mobile device and are willing to use it in your faith setting, we need to be able to encourage this. I have been bringing my own wireless setup to youth group this year..and now we are going to WiFi BYOD It is wonderful. Will be ready for the opening of school in Aug and our FF and Youth Groups in Sept. especailly useful in encourage the use of iPads iPods and e-readers and tablets. There have been inter college campuses brought to their knees, do to the large numbers of iPads brought to campus in the fall. Really happened a couple years ago. So there is a lot to be said about being prepared and asking the right questions.
