Dear Friends in Christ,

As we celebrate the essential fact of our faith, theResurrection of Jesus, it is incumbent to ourselves to askthe question: why does this matter? The fact of a manrising from the dead should garner at least a passingcuriosity. It is not a spectacle or trick such as one of thoseentertaining “magicians” do on TV. It is evidence that aseismic shift has happened in all of reality, hence to myown daily life. The following is a bit dense but it is anexcerpt of an upcoming book by Fr. Julian Carron calledDisarming Beauty. It addresses how and why Christianityis the answer to what we desire and are made for (calledthe religious sense). Especially for all those who comeonce a year or feel a bit removed from the practice of thefaith or the reason for faith (this can be those who comeeach week) I offer these few thoughts to open up yourhearts to the ever fascinating and wonderfulannouncement of Christ. Reinhart Niebuhr is quoted assaying “there is nothing so useless as an answer to aquestion that has not been asked.” Jesus is the answerbut what is the question and do I have it?

Only a Christianity that preserves its original nature, itsunmistakable traits of contemporary historical presence—the contemporaneousness of Christ—can be equal to thereal need of men and women, and will therefore be ableto save the religious sense…. The change generated bythe relationship with Christ present is such that Saint Pauldid not hesitate to exclaim, “Whoever is in Christ is a newcreation: the old things have passed away; behold, newthings have come.” The new creature is the person inwhom the religious sense is realized in its (otherwiseimpossible) fullness: reason, freedom, affection, anddesire. “Christ is so beautiful that he draws me totally!”exclaimed Jacopone da Todi. This beauty, as thesplendor of truth, is the only thing able to reawakenpeople’s desire and move their affection so powerfully asto make the openness of their reason to the reality beforethem continually possible…The attraction of Christfacilitates an openness that would be impossible withouthim (it doesn’t bring it about automatically). Christ’scontemporaneous presence allows reason to be used inall its openness, enabling it to reach an intelligence ofreality unknown before. Every thing, every circumstance, even the most banal, is exalted, becomes a sign,“speaks,” becomes interesting to experience. The personawakened and sustained by the presence of Christ canfinally live as a religious person, can endure the vertigo oflife, circumstance after circumstance, because he or sheis able to “enter any situation whatsoever with profoundtranquility, with the possibility of joy.” Thus, Christ’scontemporaneousness is indispensable for fully living thereligious sense, that is to say, for having the right attitudebefore reality. If, on the contrary, Christ is not

encountered and lived with as contemporary, theconsequences are not long in coming…‘faith’ wouldgenerically be nothing more than an aspect ofreligious experience, a kind of feeling with which hecould live out the restless search for his origin andhis destiny, which is precisely the most appealingelement of every ‘religion.

“While religiosity is born of the need for meaningawakened by the impact with reality, faith is theacknowledgment of an exceptional Presence thatcorresponds totally to our destiny, and adherence tothis Presence. Faith is acknowledging as true what ahistorical Presence says of itself.”Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!
