. With the only thermal spring in Graubünden, the Therme Spa is astunning landmark built from 60 000 stone slabs of Valserquartzite. Stone by stone. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highlysensuous and restorative experience. Only two years after itscompletion the Therme was listed as a protected building. It hasbeen described as “a lesson in combining audacity withaesthetics“, “a totally unique, yet traditional spa and therapeuticcentre that is the last word in peaceful sensuality“, and “a worldfirst in spas”. The Vals quartzite quarried just two kilometres fromwhere the building stands. The great slabs of the roof are grassedover: sections of flower studded alpine meadow.

. In the Hotel adjacent to the world famous Therme Spa PeterZumthor has redesigned 52 rooms without altering the hotel’soriginal 1960s structure. As part of the redevelopment, Der RoteSaal (The Red Room), the hotel’s restaurant, was extended.Although some parts of the complex are still in their originalstate, they are all gradually being brought up to the standard ofthe Therme itself, meaning the guest experiences. In 1983, thetown council bought the thermal spring and hotel, and thecompany that manages the site today, Hotel und Thermalbad ValsAG, is still 100% owned by the council. In 1986, Peter Zumthor, anarchitect from Haldenstein, Switzerland, was commissioned tobuild a new spa, and the resulting project received praise fromaround the world. It has been described as “a lesson in combiningaudacity with aesthetics“, “a totally unique, yet traditional spaand therapeutic centre that is the last word in peacefulsensuality“, and “a world first in spas”.

Church San Benedetg.

AddressCaplutta Sogn Benedetg SumvitgSwitzerlandhttp://www.sumvitg.ch/

. This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is“a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: thegeometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic andelusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of thebuilding on a steep slope.”The church has a wooden constructionand the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips, similar to the locally build houses. The building is very carefullydetailed even on places you would normally not come (like behindthe concrete stairs of the entrance). The setting is wonderful.

Villa Vals.

AddressPoststrasse 387132 ValsSwitzerlandhttp://www.villavals.ch

. Villa Vals is designed by Bjarne Mastenbroek and Christian Müller, respectively of the architectural offices SeARCH and CMA. Theirdesign plan was to completely integrate the villa into thelandscape to avoid disturbing the unspoiled nature. That is whyaccess to the villa is only possible via the nearby woodenGraubünder shed, through an underground tunnel which runsstraight through the mountainside. The façade of the house isslightly slanted, adding to the view of the mountain sceneryacross the valley opposite of the house. The house, which wascompleted in 2009, was built and furnished in cooperation with alarge number of Dutch designers and companies that produceDutch design. Their willful designs fit well in the spacious, industrial architecture of the villa. Pieces and objects of,amongst others, Hella Jongerius, Demakersvan, Scholten &Baijings, Marcel Wanders, Claudy Jongstra, Royal TichelaarMakkum and Vitra Nederland were used.
