Gare do Oriente Station.

AddressAv. D. João II 1990 LisbonPortugal

. As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physicalbarrier between the city and the river. This was a barrier we didnot want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at thesame time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for thecreation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon. Theproject is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planningand architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created inorder to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacentsquare which intends to accentuate and make the most of thelongitudinal axis of the building. This multi-modal platformcentralizes transport structures for the different transportsystems which will service the whole intervention zone and muchmore. There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to thevarious systems, specifically the train station (with it's publicareas) the metro station the underground car park and theunderground gallery.

. The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages tocreate between a necessary, desired and difficultmonumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the programand the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensiveeffect of a representative image symbol. The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken toexpressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it'sreflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay. The roof ofthe large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modernarchitecture and engineering in concrete and steel. It is anenormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visibleas the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxicallyvulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plasticforce.

. The Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva is located next to thecentral broad walk and the dock. It is made up fundamentallyfrom a vertical volume - the ship which contains the vessels orfragments and which is the center off the exposition area - andfrom another horizontal block split by an access patio. Thehorizontal block is virtually suspended, which allows thecontinuity of the public area between the broad walk and thedock. The vertical volume and the suspended horizontal blockcross each other like white concrete megaliths. The access patiois square. It rises up to the entrance by a ramp whichaccompanies the periphery of the square. This patio and theramps are lined with grit sandstone. The ground is covered inwater. Some walls are covered in ivy.

. Confronted with two imposing adjacent buildings - the 'Pavilionof Knowledge' and the 'Oceanarium' - the design soughtsimplicity. It's compositional form is somewhat abstract. The baseof the building is in keeping with the materials used in thesurrounding paving, and as a result seems to secure the structureto the ground. The main entrance is through a foyer with a largewindow overlooking the 'Sea of Straw', the exterior and interiorspace intimately linked. The finish in the interior of theauditorium aims to confer an atmosphere of sobriety and bringsback the idea of 'La machine du Téatre'.

. The site used to be remote – a land of farms and desolate ground– is the location of the Campolide Campus of the UniversidadeNova de Lisboa. With the former Jesuit School, it creates a publicsquare of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensionalexpression to the entrapped territory. The program is divided intotwo distinct zones. Administrative offices are located in a slendertower overlooking Monsanto Park. Large scale foyers, meetingrooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housedwithin a plinth that marks the difference in level between thepublic square and the school plateau. The rising tower has thesame height of the three-floor School building. Its façades areclad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestrationconcealing the many levels of the building. The public square andgrand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone. Thesemore symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted withinthe plinth.

. The Hotel Altis Belém is on Lisbon’s waterfront between BomSucesso Dock and the Folk Art Museum. It's a 50-room, 5-starhotel with sailing facilities. Its position at right angles to theTagus offers fine views of the city sweeping down to the river andof the riverside areas from Belém Tower to the Padrão dasDescobertas (monument to the Discoveries). The scale of thedesign establishes a relationship with the dock and creates a kindof aquatic piazza. The hotel enters into a formal relationship withthe Folk Art Museum building through the character of theeastern façade. The design opens up the hotel functionally andformally to the riverside promenade with a ground level that isopen to the public and houses shops, a restaurant, café and barand an extensive open-air seating area.
