. Italian architect Luigi Moretti lived and worked in Rome where hebuilt several houses, apartment buildings and urban plans. Afterhis graduation in 1930 he advanced rapidly through the Fascistconnections he had, designing a gymnasium for Mussolini and acompetition entry for the Ministry of External Affairs in theE.U.R. district. In his early work he combined rationalism withthe monumental architecture of Imperial Rome. After World WarII he also worked in Milan, and departed form his rigid rectilinearbuildings and began to experiment with more organic, curvedforms in reinforced concrete. It is during this period that “hedevelops such characteristic design elements as his concavecantilevered entry roofs and steam lined string courses, andrhythmic, undulating swells of concrete, one on top of theother.” This sculptural, free-standing, almost dancing villa is agreat example of the later work of this influential ItalianModernist.

. A cluster of mid-rise towers containing houses and office spaces, this project looms over Corso Italia with a commanding streetpresence. The form and façade both exhibit careful detailing inthe form of subtle inflections. It is located on one of the mainstreets in the centre of Milan. It is built on a difficult to infillsite; an irregular block in a dense urban context. The designsuccessfully combines the complex program of housing, groundfloor commercial use, parking space and offices. The 5 buildingparts are arranged in such a way that together they defineseveral public and private courtyards and streets.

.

La Rinascente.

AddressVia Santa Radegonda 320121 MilanItaly

. The redesign of La Rinascente's exterior by Cibic and Partnerswas aimed at both restoring the department store's famousportico and reinforcing the Rinascente brand (Italy's largestdepartment store) with a modern, recognizable image. As LaRinascente puts it, 'shopping requires inspiration'. The designerscopied the shape of the existing portico arches for the new shopwindows, while making the new entrance hall rectangular, contrasting with the old structure and emphasizing the newsymmetrical axis they had introduced. The large, well-lit displaywindows form a new theatrical decor in the portico. Thisambience has been extended around the corner by introducing afive-metre-high glass wall, backlit by a network of LED lightingthat creates a continuous pattern which can be reconfigured tosuit the season or special events. In the end, not only the storebut also fashion capital Milan will profit from this sophisticatedshop window.

. The New Trade Fair is not only a big project for the Milan region -its dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe.Massimiliano Fuksas conceived the site on the outskirts of the cityas a new landscape with its own geography. The project isstructured by a central axis that connects the service centres, offices and the exhibition halls. The whole complex is covered bya vast roof - an undulating lightweight structure, with a surfacearea exceeding 46.000 square metres, over 1300 metres long andapproximately 32 metres wide. Made up of a reticularrhomboidal mesh structure in prefinished steel profiles, it isconnected via spherical nodes and covered with laminated glassattached via plates to the profiles below. It is supported by 183steel columns 500 mm. in diameter which branch into smallersupporting arms above 12 metres. Fuksas derived the form fromconstant altimetric variations as found in the natural landscape inthe form of 'craters', 'waves' and 'dunes'.

Peabody Housing.

AddressEvelyn Road 98E16 LondonUnited Kingdom

. This project was the winner of a low-cost housing projectcompetition organised by Peabody Trust, the well-known socialhousing developers. Nonetheless, its author's wish resulted in afinal cost which is not low. The author's desire was to give theproject an identity, which would link it to the history of this areaof warehouses and factories along the Thames and propose newbuilding materials for the façades. At any rate, the virtue of theproject is in condensing a dozen good-sized homes into a reducedplot of land. To do that, it remakes the typical urban townhouseon the outskirts of town. It divides the townhouses intoindependent flats and introduces a new element, an outdoorstaircase. This outdoor staircase allows for better lighting andmore space on the inside of the built volumes and increases thepermeability of the lot.

Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church.

AddressViale de Padre Pio San Giovanni RotondoItaly

. The newly inaugurated church, will serve the large number ofpilgrims visiting the place where Saint Padre Pio used to live. Thematerials, selected to express simplicity and solidity, are localstone, wood and glass. The immense roof skin is finished inpre-patinated copper with a supporting structure of wood andlimestone. The supporting structure consists of two intermeshingrows of Apricena stone arches arranged in a circle, a total of 21,that form an inner and an outer. The arches of the inner ringoriginate in the centre of the three-quarter circle, where thealtar is located. Since the spans of the arches steadily decrease, with the decreasing radius of the circle, a spiral shape is createdthat is reminiscent of a snail’s shell. The radial structure bringsthe assembly as close as possible to the altar. The cost of thebuilding, which took 10 years to design and build, has been metentirely by contributions from the faithful. It is the place where you will find the most importantlocal and international shops. Among these is 'Via X Giornate -Orologi da collezione', a shop of antique and collection watches. It serves a luxury clientele, often coming from abroad. The newspace has been organized to be entirely visible from the publicportico. The ambience aims to be exclusive and stronglyemotional. The watches are exposed in niches excavated in twovolumes made of inner lighted onyx, designed to exalt theuniqueness of the pieces and the place. A cor-ten steel staircase, made up of juxtaposed cave boxes, leads to the first floor, wherea studio and a laboratory are located. . Commissioned to Gio Ponti between 1935 and 1938, this buildingsoon became a symbol of rationalist Milan architecture betweenthe two wars. In the shape of an H with a private opening ontoVia della Moscova on one floor, it is ideal for offices with itsinternal layout, furnishings and external aspect working togetherin perfect harmony. Externally, the green marble walls and thestandardized iron and aluminium locks annonce the expressiveclarity and attention to detail that can also be seen on theinside. The complex offers avant-garde, typological solutions(mobile floors with individual work posts) as well as technologicalones (controlled heating and inflatable posts), which Ponti tookcare of paying great attention to detail (from website Yahoo!Travel).

Duca di Milano Hotel.

AddressPiazza della Repubblica 1320124 MilanItaly

. Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hoteloperates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with whichit is linked by a skybridge. The façade of Rossi's hotel is made upof red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plainsurface. This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments. The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with thePrincipe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal redfabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, andgenerous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antiquedressers.

Gallaratese II Housing.

AddressVia Enrico Falck 37 MilanItaly

. Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complexhas the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants. Aldo Rossi designedthe complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-containedvillage which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants. Thiscoordinates with Rossi’s philosophy of architecture. His view thatthe primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primaryforms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades.Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-southand east-west. These indicate the primary circulation routes ofthe building as well as guiding the relationships between thebuilding and the rest of the quarter (from website University ofColorado Denver).

AddressPiazza Velasca 120122 MilanItaly

. Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice thepresence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of TorreVelasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from adistance. The building was designed in the 1950s by a group ofMilanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi,Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers. The Velasca Tower belongs tothe first generation of Italian modern architecture, neverthelesskeeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it wasborn, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city'sbell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle. The tower, withits characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers. Its structure recalls the Lombardtradition of the massive profile of towers and medievalfortresses.

. In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where thefirst factory was constructed in the 19th century. The projectwas developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of PierLuigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso. At 127.1 meters (417 feet), it isthe tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est.60,000 tons). Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a timethat Italy was experiencing an economic boom. The tower was tobe surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land.Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols ofMilan and of the national economical recovery. The building waslater sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the headoffice. Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smoothrefined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of aship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customaryblock form.

. Villa Bianca in Seveso, north of Milan, is a good example of ItalianRationalism by architect Giuseppe Terragni. The house is one ofmany he designed in Milan and vicinity, all of them experimentsthat show his research on shape, even in the face of more bindingprofessional commissions. Terragni designed Villa Bianca in 1937and played with its composition. Value Partners Headquarters.

. The buildings for the Value Partners Headquarters in Milan, having pure geometrical shapes, are physically separated butfunctionally interconnected by footbridges and by a littlestructure between them, housing the reception. The façades havedifferent characteristics: the ones facing the street appeararchitecturally abstract and rigorous, with a base made in steel, defining a typically urban style. The internal parts were made bya composition of steel and glass, to allow a better view on theroof gardens of the lowers buildings. The façades at the back, inwood and steel, are related in style, modules, and position. Thepresence of green areas is visible from everywhere in thebuilding, and in the tallest building there is a green verticalstructure of 20 metres in height. It's a way to obtain greensurface and a relationship with nature in a high-density buildingarea.

The White Kite.

AddressPiazza Comunale 820090 PantigliateItaly

. This canopy belongs to a private courtyard next to the centraltown square, and replaces an old structure; the public functionof the place, and the client's will to renew were important inputsfor the project; the architecture would have to distinguish itselffrom the surroundings both from a material and a figurative pointof view, trying to attract people, providing them protection, andkeeping an open aspect. The whole load bearing structure ismade of tubular steel, while the permanent roof is made of 20mmthick polycarbonate sheets. The white striped sheets were chosenbecause of their characteristics to reduce the absorption ofinfra-red sunrays, thereby reducing the heat under the canopy, while at the same time providing excellent light transmission; onhot sunny days, they guarantee the best possible thermalcomfort; in the summer time, a temporary white-nylonmembrane can also be added to the southern part of thestructure.

. This ecclesiastical complex, designed by Italian architects LuigiFigini and Gino Pollini, occupies a trapezoidal plot on thenorthern periphery of Milan. The church and adjoining youthcentre have a very irregular form, since the perimeter consists ofa constant pattern of advances and regressions, making forbroken sight lines and a continuous play between outside andinside (text from LombardiaBeniCulturali).
