JK:f Ann Arbor Civic Theatre presents

The Foreigner by Larry Shue

Directed by Conrad Mason

Originally produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

June 12-15, 1991 at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday Matinee at 2:00 p.m.

AT THE LYDIA MENDELSSOHN THEATRE a~ With the Suppoct of the ~ =::: Michigan Council for the Arts

THE FOREIGNER is presented through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. 440 Pack Avenue South, New Yock, NY 10016

The University of Michigan forbids smoking in any part of the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre

The use of photographic or audio equipment is prohibited.

Director's Notes Larry Shue, the author of tonight's presentation. is perhaps better known for his one other work - THE NERD. However,

THE FOREIGNER garnered two Obies and two Outer Circle Awards: Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. Unfortunately, because of his untimely death, we have only these two scripts from this remarkable individual who was blessed with a sense of humor slightly out of synch with what might be considered "normal:' His ability to take what starts as an o rdinary situation and to shape it rapidly into something transcending the wildest imaginings is aptly demonstrated by THE FOREIGNER. And he does it without leaving any loose ends: dialogues and situations are introduced - and resolved, sometimes three scenes later, sometimes only three lines later. The result is a highly structured interwoven framework on which to hang yards of humor and laughter. StilL this play is not a fa rce. It is about an assortment of real down-to-earth folks who find themselves in an unusual predicament. How they get into it and how they get out of it are the wellsprings for the ever-abundant humor. So sit back, relax and enjoy; take home with you whatever you may personally discern to be the "message."

My message to you is: Blasny! Blasny!

About The Cast FRED BOCK (Ellard Simms) recently graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a double major in Theatre and Telecommunications and Film. He worked on several EMU productions including REUNION. THE TRIAL OF TOM SAWYER and GREATER TUNA. Fred is completing his first year with AACT having worked on THE MOUSETRAP, THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH and OLIVER. During the day, he works at ProVision, a video production facility in Ann Arbor.

KATHLEEN DAVIES (Catherine) is a doctoral candidate in English at the University of Michigan. She has been active in theater, both locally and in upstate New York for several years. She appeared as Kate and Margaret in WOYZECK and as Constan.ze in AMADEUS for AACT. As an instructor, she believes that the best teaching is also good theater and the best theater teaches something.

CHRISTOPHER R. JACOBS (Rev. David Marshall Lee) hails from a small town in the Michigan thumb. He is a student at EMU where he has performed roles that vary from a lobster Man to a silly Herdsman in ancient Greece. THE FOREIGNER is his first stint away from the EMU stage. When he graduates, he plans to either pursue a MFA in acting or just head off to the big city and tackle the world of professional theater.

THOM JOHNSON (Owen Musser) has done a little of everything around AACT from acting as the President of the Board of Directors to doing maintenance on the boiler. He is a lighting designer, director, stage manager, and actor as well. Of these, acting is his favorite. He was most recently seen in the AACT productions of LYSISTRATA, TWELFTH NIGHT BIGFOOT STOLE MY WIFE and A LESSON FROM AWES. TJ's outside activities include softball (He was a member of the division championship team "Ten Fat Guys Named Elvis."), working, and watching the weather. He smokes an occasional cigar and does not jog.

JAN KOENGETER (Betty Meeks) has performed in, directed or produced over 100 shows for various area theater groups. Most recently Jan directed the Saline Area Players' April production of HELLO DOLLY For AACT, Jan directed the AACT Best Musical three seasons in a row -DAMN YANKEES, THE MUSIC MAN, and MAME. Jan is the Performing Arts Specialist for the Ann Arbor Schools Community Education and Recreation, supervising classes in foreign languages for youth and in drama for both youth and adults, and two performing companies-Junior Theatre and The Goodtime Players. Favorite roles include Yente in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and Aunt Eller in OKLAHOMA.

CHRIS10PHER KOROW (Charlie Baker) has come on like "gangbusters" since his 1985 arrival on Ann Arbor-area stages. Nineteen shows later, Chris has worked his way from bit parts to the winner of AACf's 1989 Best Actor-Main Stage Award for his portrayal of Alan Felix in PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, in which he took a Woody Allen role, written by Allen for Allen, and made it his own. Chris' other credits include LONE STAR. THE ANASTASIA AFFAIR, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, THE MOUSETRAP, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and most recently WATCH ON THE RHINE. Off stage, Chris is a senior software engineer for a small Ann Arbor software firm.

TIM MORLEY ("Froggy" LeSueur) is a graduate student at the U of M in Materials Science. He was seen in THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH (Skelly) and in TWELFTH NIGHT (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), both for AACT MainStreet, and just appeared in OLIVER (Bow Street Runner/Chorus) for MainStage. His backstage work for AACT includes light crews for both SHE LOVES ME and WAlCH ON THE RHINE. For the Little Theatre of Alexandria, Va. he was in the choruses of both HMS PINAFORE and KISMET

About The Staff DAVID C. BLOOM (Sound Designer) One of AACT's "Usual Suspects;' David designed sound for this season's smash hit, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN: and lighting for STEEL MAGNOLIAS. Last season, David designed and executed lighting for I'M NOT RAPPAPORT, LYSISTRATA, and BRIGADOON. Between singing gigs with the Measure for Measure men's choral society, David enjoys frisbee golf. bocci ball, and writing.

LEE BURKHARUf (Co-Costumer) brings a wealth of costuming experience to THE FOREIGNER. She served as costume designer for last season's TWELFTH NIGHT and this season's STEEL MAGNOLIAS and A DAY IN THE DEATH OF jOE EGG. She was co-costume-designer for SHE LOVES ME and worked on the costume crews for WATCH ON THE RHINE and OLIVER. also this season. (Ed. Note: Not all troupers are in front of the footlights. Thanks, Lee!)

WAYNE BURKHARDT (Set Designer/Set Builder) tells us in his own pithy words, "joined AACT with MUSIC MAN in '88. Lifestyle since then; Sleep, Work, and then really go to work at the theatre. Nuff said." (Ed. Note: We couldn't have said it better, Wayne!)

ELIZABETH CROWE (Properties) received most of her theatrical experience while in college at Marquette University in Milwaukee. There she did everything from directing a musical to curtain puller for COMEDY OF ERRORS. She was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress in ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST Elizabeth is currently employed as a cost analyst for Ecology and Environment in Taylor. She lives in Ypsilanti with two newts, Barney and Zippy. She is also a part-time volunteer for the Humane Society of Huron Valley and would like to make a difference in animals' lives everywhere.

CATHY JONES (Co-Producer) This year is one of "fir.;ts'' for Cathy. She and her husband Ray bought their fir>t home and their first dog. She is starting her first business in the skin care industry and THE FOREIGNER is her first involvement with AACT She tells us, "The people are a lot of fun. I'm glad I've joined AACT.' We are too, Cathy!

MIKE LIMMER (Lighting Designer) celebrates his 50th anniver.;ary with this production of AACT No, not wedding but AACT anniversary! THE FOREIGNER is the 5oth show Mike has worked on in one way or another since joining the group in 1980. He has been on the Board of Directors six of those years. He is pleased the show runs this week instead of next week since it will allow him to spend Father's Day with his wife and brand new very first child, Robert. Happy Anniversary, Mike and Happy Father's Day!

CONRAD MASON (Director) has been active in local community theater groups for over 25 years, and this production-his second as a director for AACT-is his 43rd. Other directing credits include ANYTHING GOES, THE ODD COUPLE and last season's Best-Musical-Award-winning BRIGADOON for AACT His last on-stage appearance for AACT was in THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940; he played the part of the director Ken De La Maize! His favorite role is Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF; other acting credits include INHERIT THE WIND, GYPSY, and PAJAMA GAME. Conrad is the Secretary to the AACT Board of Directors. In his spare time, he works as a consulting meteorologist and as a computer systems consultant at the U of M.

ROBIN KONKLE MAYS (Co-Producer) has also produced last season's BRIGADOON and this season's STEEL MAGNOLIAS. She is pleased to be co-producing THE FOREIGNER with Cathy jones, since she keeps busy both day (as AACT's Office Manager) and night (Awards Ceremony Committee-1990 and 1991) with all the activities of AACT. When she is not working for Civic, she can be found with her son, Daniel, who keeps her occupied with T-Ball games, art shows, and gymnastics.

JOANN PERAINO (Co-Costumer) worked on her f) irst AACT show as part of the costume crew of Oliver. From that, whe makes the big move to Co-Costumer for THE FOREIGNER. JoAnn is a financial aid assistant at the U of M School of Public Health and, to no one's great surprise, enjoys sewing in her spare time (and we're glad you do, JoAnn! Thanks!)

ROSEMARIE ROTHE (Make-Up Designer) has been doing make-up for AACT for over seven year>. THE FOREIGNER marks her debut performance as Make-Up Designer, an event that is quite exciting to Rosemarie. She learned the art of make-up from AACT's greatest make-up designer, Sophie Farah. Rosemarie would like to dedicate her first attempt at make-up design to this superstar. Thanks, Sophie!

ANN VANDEMARK (Assistant Director) plays many roles for AACT She choreographed BRIGADOON and MAME, worked props for MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940, was Asst. Director for WONDERFUL lOWN and appeared in ANYTHING GOES, SKIN OF OUR TEETH, GYPSY and MUSIC MAN (Mrs. Paroo). She is Vice-President for Administration for AACTs Board of Directors. With the Dexter Community Players she appeared as Golde (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF), Mammy Yokum (Lf[ ABNER) and Vita Simmons in HARVEY Ann is Director of Clinical Rehabilitation Services for Special Tree, a center for persons with traumatic brain injury.

JEFF ZUPAN (Stage Manager) After cavorting about on stage in the Saline Area Player's recent HELLO DOLLY, Jeff is once again where he belongs- backstage, safely out of sight. THE FOREIGNER marks the fifth time in four years Jeff has stood at that little desk in the wings, having annoyed the casts and crews on BORN YESTERDAY, BRIGADOON, PLAY IT AGAIN SAM and LION IN WINTER. When not telling someone when to turn the lights off and on, he also designs and/or builds sets (BORN YESTERDAY. PLAZA SUITE, DROOD), does stuff for Comic Opera Guild, and brews his own beer.
