This 3-week pilot course is intended as a composite, demonstration version of the interview skills training programmes within our new P2P portfolio that will be available commercially from early 2011.

The learning content will provide intensive multimedia-rich language training in both diagnostic & follow-up interview skills addressing different body systems and medical conditions.

Students will: • Learn essential English usage for diagnostic and follow-up interviews • Practise oral and listening comprehension skills • Gain con�dence in questioning patients for diagnostic and/or follow-up purposes• Consolidate and build on their active medical and “patient” vocabulary• Learn how to explain tests, test results, diagnoses and home care for different health conditions• Acquire strategies to continue their own study of English for professional purposes

Seminars 2 x 5 hours

Each Seminar will be 5 hours long. These face-to-face sessions, held entirely in English, provide intensive, hands-on practice in oral skills and take a close look at the essential English needed for both diagnostic and follow-up interviews. In both seminars, our dynamic practical exercises combine with role play and simulated cases to guarantee some good fun while you are learning!

Besides an introduction to basic interview terminology, full guidance will be given in Seminar 1 on how the online content is organised and tips on how to manage the Medical Expression Learning Platform, while Seminar 2 will provide a thorough overview of the 3 Units and further interview skills practice with patients.

COURSE CONTENT

Self-study 12 hours

Each of the three Units in Interview Skills for GPs includes content for four hours for one complete week (from Monday to Sunday) and addresses a particular presenting symptom and common related disorders. This content is to be completed within the week, but you can organise when and how you do this according to your personal commitments. Some background reading is advisable but full instructions will be provided during the course and this time is included within the 4 hours. For the weekly assignments, you will need to co-operate with your colleagues on some of the exercises that will then be discussed in the online classes. Your full participation will not only bene�t you personally but is also intended to generate opportunities to share and multiply know-how (English saying: “Many hands make light work!”) as well as to create an online learning community. Indeed, experts in online education believe that participants gain the greatest bene�t from this kind of learning when there is a general feeling of belonging to a “community”.

Online Classes 5 hours

These classes provide the chance for intensive oral practice, grammar review, student presentations and discussion. We recommend that you attempt to attend all these classes in person. However, if you do have to miss a class, a recorded summary will be available on the Medical Expression platform for your review. You will be given instructions on how to log on to your online classes at Seminar 1.

Alison Turner Hanover

Alison Turner Hanover is a free-lance interpreter who has been specialising in medical conferences for over 20 years. A former lecturer in technical English at the University of Salamanca, Alison has continued to teach part time within the �elds of interpreting & translation and, since setting up Medical Expression in 2004, she has run a range of medical communication and presentation skills seminars and workshops for hospitals, research groups and laboratories. She has also devised individual coaching programmes for physicians with international speaking engagements. Alison recently joined Mediterranean Editors and Translators, a professional association of English language facilitators, which has enabled Medical Expression to broaden its portfolio of training options. She shares Jonathan’s passion for helping healthcare professionals in Spain to enhance their communication skills in English to enable them to play a more pro-active role in the wider international medical community as well as to engage more effectively with their non Spanish-speaking patients.

Jonathan McFarland

Jonathan McFarland is a freelance English-language trainer who has been involved in the �eld of medicine for the last eight years. He �rst began working at Son Llàtzer Hospital in 2002 and his teaching commitments spread to Mallorca’s reference hospital, Son Dureta, three years later. Since then he has divided his time between the two hospitals.As a �rm believer that English is essential for all medical and nursing personnel working in Spain, Jon is dedicated to helping these healthcare professionals improve their communication in English and thus bene�t their careers. At present he is working on a number of projects within this overall aim and just one example is his involvement in Medical Expression’s Clinical Communication portfolio. He is also President of the newly formed MHAM (Medical Humanities Association of Mallorca).
