Muswellbrook Royal Hotel’s ‘Funked up Fridays’ concept has proved a huge success as Pro DJ Entertainment continues to provide DJs of great experience and popularity making for a genuine club experience in the Upper Hunter. Bringing fresh techno music to the town, the featured DJs hail from some of the premier clubs and venues of New South Wales including ‘Candy’s Apartment’ and ‘Whaat’ based in Newcastle and Sydney.

The days of having to book hotels and organise trips towards the coast for a night out are long gone with an impressive format to accommodate a broad range of ages in the rural town.

Pro DJ Entertainment have been club promoters for fifteen years now, supplying entertainment in Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane, not to mention rural venues such as The Royal in Muswellbrook. “It’s a great

vibe at these events. ‘Funked up Fridays’ is about going out and partying to music you wouldn’t hear on the radio. We have some pretty hot producer DJ’s coming up from Sydney over the next few months and judging by the reaction at some of our events so far, the locals will love it.” explains Chad Ross of Pro DJ Entertainment.

“It’s been a great thing for Muswellbrook, not having to drive to Newcastle to have a good night - now getting the same atmosphere and entertainment locally, it’s been a big hit.” said local, Amber Mungoven.

Following the huge turn outs so far, the Diamond Dancers will be heading to The Royal Hotel alongside DJ B-Rock and Sonic on the decks providing trap, dubstep, electro, hardstyle and rave sounds from 8pm on Friday 31 May. Be sure to head down and experience it for yourself.

Working away in her sewing room as her three month old sleeps, Coral Hagan of ‘Mouse Trap Designs’ Scone, is busy creating unique and homemade baby, toddler and mum-to-be essentials and gifts.Starting out when her pregnancy was announced, her customer base spread from her own baby boy, to family and friends and is now successfully functioning through the business’s Facebook page with now over three hundred followers with the help of her mother-in-law, Julie.

Using her own trendy designs, her wares include fabric covered baby wipes cases and tubs, minky tag security blankets, modern cloth nappies and accessories. As well as bibs, burp cloths, nappy wallets and pouches and ‘Boss’ dribble bibs, a suit-tie shaped bib inspired by her little boy, Boston. Coral also sells manchester including doonas, pillows, buntings, change table covers and wall canvases.

“We make many trips to Spotlight so we do like people to be forthcoming about what they like. Eventually I’d like to be able to get in and sell funky boys clothes, because the market for little men is very sad. It is very hard to find a large range of clothing for Boston.” explained Coral.

Little Corner of Tuscany - Right in the Heart of Denman By Sophie Fitzgerald

Whether you appreciate authentic cuisine, fancy-quality coffee or are a Belgian chocolate connoisseur - a visit to ‘Tartuca’ in the beautiful town of Denman will be a cherished experience.

Primarily known as ‘Chocolate Hills’, new proprietor Laura Cora’-Macolino has transformed the business into a little corner of Tuscany, with an impressive array of products and meals available while continuing the production of Chocolate Hills Chocolate. Tartuca is all about traditional, old-fashion cooking, quality ingredients and creating a legitimate Italian experience for their customers.

Laura and her family travelled to Australia in 2009, before calling Denman home. Before this, although originally hailing from Veneto, Laura owned a holiday home in Tuscany for twelve years where she, through her respect for traditional cooking, created an array of northern dishes.

She had learnt and been inspired by her grandmothers, aunts and other relatives who were excellent cooks in her family. It was here she sourced her ingredients from the home garden and surrounding farms.

An important component of her business is ‘Italian Tapas Nights’, which she describes as - ‘An exotic journey across the Italian regions featuring exclusive tasting and authentic dishes.’ These occur monthly, showcasing a new Italian region each time depending on the season.

These nights consists of four exquisite courses, explained in Italian on the menus as well as by Laura before each course is served taking the attendees on a world wind adventure to the villages of Italy. The name ‘Tartuca’ itself is a ‘contrada’ in Siena. “Everything must have real history; we want to tell real, authentic stories with and through our food. We aim to make our customers taste different and new flavours”, explained Laura.

The walls of Tartuca are never bare, featuring new artists monthly and at no cost to the artist – the only request is that they paint one of the bistro’s tables which become a permanent art memory in the restaurant. In keeping with tradition, Chocolate Hills is still in production - the fine Belgium coverture chocolate renowned for the best quality, texture and flavour; they have recently introduced new flavours such as amaretto and chilli.

Striving to create excellent experiences for their customers, Laura and her fantastic team have established a business that fits in well amongst the other tourist locations in and around Denman

and the Upper Hunter; it’s well worth the visit, a unique and unforgettable experience. Be sure to head down to Ogilvie Street, Monday - Friday 7.30am-4.30pm or weekends 8.00am-4.00pm

A Truly Country Event Like No OtherSince 1990, Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces has been one of the Upper Hunter Shire’s major events. Although starting off in a small way, the festival now attracts more then three thousand visitors to the town of Merriwa which only has a population just shy of one thousand people.

Cr Deirdre Peebles of the Upper Hunter Shire Council once wrote, “Not many things stay the same but through the history of the Festival of the Fleeces some things have – the running of the sheep in Bettington Street is the signature event each year. Getting the socks on the sheep is an event in itself. It’s a skill that has been perfected over the years so that the running of the sheep can be admired by many visiting to our local area.“

“The festival was developed to appreciate and acknowledge the wool industry which has been so important to this district.”

The ROSTO Olives 2013 Festival of the Fleeces kicks into action on Friday 7 June with the Merriwa Tyre and Service Centre “Bush Dance” being held at the Merriwa Sports Club.

On Saturday 8 June, the day commences with over forty stalls of food, craft work, preserves, cakes, face painting, clothing, etc as well as displays in sheep shearing, blade shearing, Merriwa’s hanging of the quilts, working sheep dog, dog high jump, model planes and old machinery. A petting zoo, farm animals, amusement rides and ‘Sparkles the Clown’ will keep the children entertained. Scenic helicopter flights, team penning demonstrations, fireworks display highlighted by the street parade and the ‘Running of the Sheep’ offer a truly country event like no other! Mark it in your diary!

Saturday’s event saw nine fillies/mares walk away from Scone enhancing their pedigrees with black type – appropriate, considering Scone is the Horse Capital of Australia and home to some of the world’s greatest thoroughbred nurseries.

The feature race of Saturday’s programme, the Inglis Guineas was won by an extremely well supported ‘Taxmeifyoucan’ whose owners barely had room to fit onto the winner’s podium.

A massive crowd gathered to see local pin up girl ‘Ortensia’ race in the last race, named in her honour, the Ortensia Stakes. Unfortunately she wasn’t in the top three, however the winner ‘Satin Shoes’ was a very worthy winner.

For others the highlight of the two days was the Fashions on the Field run by Sharon Lenton Events, with a very locally-flavoured contingent taking out many of the top awards.

A record crowd came through the turnstiles with approximately 14,000 attending over the two days – swelling the local population nearly three fold. Betting figures are expected to be up around 10% on last year.

Club President, Noel Leckie summed up the carnival with these comments “Better horses help better turnover which equates to better crowds. Scone Cup Carnival has grown from strength to strength and we were excited by the level and standard of horses racing over the two days. We are incredibly fortunate and appreciative that next year’s Dark Jewel will carry Group 3 status - a first for a Country Race Club”

What a Wonderful Festival!A huge thank you to all those people who got involved in the festival this year. It is a wonderful community celebration and we are lucky to have so many people who are willing to put time and effort into making this festival such a success. The festival would not exist without the sponsorship and support from local businesses and individuals. Thank you to Scone Air Speed for a superb cocktail party; Scone Equine Hospital for a fabulous parade; Hunter Mutual for a wonderful ‘Jack Johnston Day’ and David and Claire Paradice for sponsoring the wild brumby schools’ competition, horse archery and jousting tournament. We plan to hold the medieval martial arts weekend during the festival next year.

The weather was brilliant over the two weeks - may we now have some much needed rain. The pony club – ‘Beginning to the Millennium Exhibition’ will continue at the Scone Historical Museum as will SCADS for the next couple of weeks.

Anne Davies, President - Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival.

Chloe Jumps Rope for Your Heart By Cheri Gibson

At the age of nine, most children are increasingly expanding their social circles; perhaps considering how their next football or netball game will pan out or even commence to keep track of their activities and schedules.

However, there is one young Hunter Valley lady who has recently sounded her voice and raised the stakes of a typical nine year old’s development in the pursuit of attracting donations for the National Heart Foundation of Australia (the organisation that saves lives and improves health via funding world-class cardiovascular research) - That nine year old is Chloe Black from Branxton.

Chloe decided to set out on her journey of fundraising four weeks ago with a goal of $2,500 in sight. To date she has raised $1408.25 which has included skipping for five hours at the recent Drayton’s Family Market at Pokolbin, online support and door knocking.

You could very well say that finding interesting ways to improve and maintain fitness coupled with a fundraising route to attract support is an obvious drawcard, but nine year old Chloe excels this way of thinking beyond her years. Fundraising doesn’t just happen and can be a very brutal task because of the unpredictable market, and the charitable time one must commit, but Chloe’s dedicated mission of organisation and her maturity to handle the responsibilities involved which are lovingly supported by her mother Nicole sees her undoubtedly achieving her goal.

This Saturday 25 May will see Chloe selling cakes, lollies, lucky dips, necklaces and raffles tickets on the showground at Singleton Markets from 8am – 1pm. Show your support to this inspirational nine year old girl and dig deep for a wonderful initiative and help young Chloe reach her target of $2,500 or jump online using https://jrfh.tsacorporation.com/Kids/custom/SponsorMe.aspx?student=efa85e9a-f971-e011-98a8-00155d211900

Deen City Club Celebrates Twenty Years By Laura Sykes

The Deen City Club has been supporting the Aberdeen community for twenty years, and this year they will be celebrating the double decade with a bang. All past and present members, their friends and families are invited to attend the twenty-year reunion on 22 June at the Aberdeen Sport and Recreation Club, starting at 8pm. A fantastic night is expected, with live entertainment provided by Darryl Bowen aka ‘Carrot’.

The club was formed in 1993 when a group of local enthusiasts decided they wanted to do something to support the local football club, and it has never looked back. Always thinking outside the box, members of the Deen City Club donate a certain amount of money each week to raise funds, rather than participating in more traditional fundraising methods. All money raised is either donated to or goes towards helping local sporting and community groups.

Members meet several times a year to ‘meet up’ and socialise at functions organised by Dale Fittock and Danny Buckman, who took over the role of running the club from Wayne and Lyn Meyers nine years ago. Since then, the club has racked up an impressive list of groups they support, including junior football and cricket clubs, junior tennis, cubs and scouts, Little Athletics as well as the skate park in Aberdeen.

The club’s members have for the past twenty years demonstrated outstanding generosity and commitment to community, and continuously find that the enjoyment they garner from supporting their local community in such a simple way is far greater than ever imagined. Anyone who wishes to attend the reunion event and help celebrate the amazing work that the club and its members have done over the past twenty years is strongly encouraged to attend.

For more information about the club or becoming a member, please contact Dale or Danny at the Deen City Club.
