Bang on a Can / pg. 09
We celebrate our 15th season this summer, starting May 24th with a rollicking dance party, pop-up performances by some of our favorites, and the opening of Teresita Fernández’s elegant exhibition, As Above so Below, comprised largely of graphite and gold. Darren Waterston’s warped riff on James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room is winning critical accolades and return visits from patrons raving about its sumptuous detailing. Nothing is quite as it seems in Izhar Patkin’s football field-sized veiled labyrinth. Dying of the Light is a love letter to the subtle beauty of celluloid film. And this marks the premier season for the Hall Art Foundation’s powerful Anselm Kiefer show, plus a new outdoor installation of perky, pink sculpture by Franz West. Musical highlights include Beck, Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth, rising star Jason Isbell, and our signature Bang on a Can festival — this year with Steve Reich and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche. Here’s a tip for lovers of roots music: enjoy family-friendly bluegrass pick-alongs every Saturday morning in our lobby (building your appetite for September’s knockout FreshGrass festival). Celebrate summer at MASS MoCA. Bring your family...we love kids, and they’ll love Sol LeWitt just as much as you’ll love Kidspace. Become a member and get free gallery admission and big savings on performing arts events (including $5 tickets to select performances throughout the year). Joseph ThompsonDirector, MASS MoCA
PS. Join us for a beer at The Chalet, Dean Baldwin’s bar-sculpture/beer garden, open from 5pm every Thursday and Friday evening (and many Saturdays too). PPS. The super-hot band Lucius will play our 15th anniversary benefit on October 6th in NYC. Since it provides 25% of our total programming budget we’d love you to join us!

MEET US AT THE AIRPORT
Continuing our tradition of flight-themed movies on a massive airplane hangar screen, Ron Howard’s nail-biting, dramatization of the ill-fated 1970 mission to the moon
makes for ideal summer night viewing. With a stellar cast that includes Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, and Kevin Bacon,
the film won two Oscars and was nominated for seven more — blast off into the 4th of July weekend with us!

THE WORLD’S THIRD TALLEST MAN
THE MEASURE OF ALL THINGSWITH SAM GREEN AND YMUSIC
Saturday, July 12, 8:30pm
Inspired by our collective fascination with The Guinness Book of World Records, filmmaker Sam Green
traveled across the world to gather footage of record-holding (and nearly record- holding) people and places. The result is a
fascinating “live documentary” film and performance featuring Green’s narration and an original live score by
indie - classical chamber ensemble yMusic.

NETSAYI
This Zimbabwean contemporary folk star is among the most captivating and original singer-songwriters to emerge on the world music scene in a decade. Bono, one of her scores of champions, calls her “anarchic and
joyous, thoughtful and mischievous.” Netsayi combines some of our favorite sounds: think Joan Armatrading meets Angélique Kidjo.

Perennial MASS MoCA favorite Alloy Orchestra returns with a signature live score to the 1924 classic He Who Gets Slapped, the tragic tale of a brilliant scientist who loses his research — and his
wife — to a dishonest man and becomes a circus clown with a very peculiar act. The only thing more outrageous than leading man
Lon Chaney is Alloy Orchestra’s soulful, grinding soundtrack.

A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY
JASON ISBELLFriday, August 15, 8pm
One-time Drive -By Trucker Jason Isbell writes open -hearted songs full of storm and drama, bursting with personal truths, and echoing
with the southern sound of his Alabama upbringing. Last year’s Southeastern, his fourth solo record, was a critical success and
commercial breakthrough. He’s been touring with Ray LaMontagne, Willie Nelson, and Alison Krauss — add a little bit of thunder
and that’s a good indicator of his sound.

ELYSIAN FIELDS
Composers Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow are MASS MoCA veterans and NYC indie music stalwarts, weaving dream pop
and noir landscapes together for fifteen years and nine records. Always keen collaborators, their past and present bandmates
include Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett and everyone in Jeff Buckley’s band. Pitchfork touts their “forbidding cocktail dress cool” while
others detect a young Serge Gainsbourg in their sultry, hazy delivery.

TERESITA FERNÁNDEZ
AS ABOVE SO BELOW
In As Above So Below, Brooklyn-based artist Teresita Fernández creates a series of dynamic and immersive new works for MASS MoCA’s central
galleries. The exhibition, which explores two essential materials — gold and graphite — features three large installations alongside India ink drawings on gold chrome panels. These works shift in scale from intimate to vast, from
miniature to panoramic, all while exploring natural phenomena, landscape, and a range of historical and cultural references.
This exhibition is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Roberta & Michael Joseph, and Agnes Gund. Additional assistance with materials for the exhibition is provided by Glen Mills, Inc.

DARREN WATERSTONUNCERTAIN BEAUTY
In the centerpiece of his exhibition Uncertain Beauty, Darren Waterston re-imagines James McNeill Whistler’s decorative
masterpiece Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room (1876-77) as a psychedelic ruin – tortured by the history and scandal that
overwhelm it. Close to thirty of the artist’s ethereal paintings accompany his extensively detailed Filthy Lucre.
This exhibition is supported by Leslie Mason & Thad Meyerriecks, ABC Carpet & Home, Bridget Moore, Ann Hatch, Robin Reed & Lorye George, Federico de Vera, Greg Kucera & Larry Yocom, Cheryl Haines, Kerry Inman & Denby Auble, Kathleen O’Grady, Dave Koz, Kaye Cummings, and Valerie Justin. Additional funding is provided by a grant from the Artist’s Resource Trust, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Bonnie Schaefer, the Kevin J. Mossier Foundation, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Home Furnishings, and Gheri Arnold.
Both events are free for members of MASS MoCA and The Mount / $7 for not-yet-membersThe Mount, 2 Plunkett Street, Lenox, MA / Call The Mount to reserve tickets at 413-551-5111

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT
FILM AS MEDIUM AND METAPHOR
A love letter to analog film, the exhibition features works by six artists — Rosa Barba, Matthew Buckingham, Tacita Dean, Rodney Graham,
Lisa Oppenheim, and Simon Starling — who engage celluloid’s distinctive texture, grain, luminosity, and sound. With simple but
powerful imagery — including a projector suspended by its own film loop — the ensemble of sculptural, atmospheric, and narrative works
makes connections between this threatened medium and science, spectacle, memory, faith, and even death.
