We wish you a blessed, restful and happy Labor Day!
2 September 06, 2015
Pastor’s Corner Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: I hope you have had a restful summer and are ready to begin the new school year. We are still accepting applications for the Elementary School and well as sign-ups for Religious Education. Please see this bulletin for more information. Below is a section from the Classic work Imitation of Christ. I hope you find it helpful. Have a blessed Week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor
From the Imitation of Christ On humility and peace
Do not care much who is with you and who is against you; but make it your greatest care that God is with you in everything you do. Have a good conscience, and God will defend you securely; no one can hurt you if God wishes to help you. If you know how to suffer in silence, you will surely receive God’s help. Since he knows best the time and the way to set you free, resign yourself to him, for God helps you and frees you from all confusion. It is often good for us, and helps us to remain humble, if others know our weaknesses and confront us with them. When a man humbles himself for his faults, he more easily pleases others and mollifies those he has angered. God protects and frees a humble man; he loves and consoles a humble man; he favors a humble man; he showers him with graces; then, after his suffering, God raises him up to glory. He reveals his secrets to a humble man and in his kindness invitingly draws that man to himself. When a humble man is brought to confusion, he experiences peace, because he stands firm in God and not in this world. Do not think that you have made any progress unless you feel that you are the lowest of all men. Above all things, keep peace within yourself, then you will be able to create peace among others. It is better to be peaceful than learned. The passionate man often thinks evil of a good man and easily believes the worst; a good and peaceful man turns all things to good. A man who lives at peace suspects no one. But a man who is tense and agitated by evil is troubled with all kinds of suspicions; he is never at peace with himself, nor does he permit others to be at peace. He often speaks when he should be silent, and he fails to say what would be truly useful. He is well aware of the obligations of others but neglects his own. So be zealous first of all with yourself, and then you will be more justified in expressing zeal for your neighbor. You are good at excusing and justifying your own deeds, and yet you will not listen to the excuses of others. It would be more just to accuse yourself and excuse your neighbor.

Quotes of the Week LABOR Without labor nothing prospers.
—Sophocles JUDGMENT To pass judgment on another is to usurp shamelessly a prerogative of God.
—St. John Climacus
First Reading — Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5). Gospel — Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37).
Today’s Readings
In these times, there is plenty to be afraid of, if we only look around. It seems that every day the news media have yet more bad news to tell: wars, disease, terrorism, drought, social unrest, and more. Some people have stopped using clock radios to wake up in the morning, preferring a jarring buzzer to the even more jarring morning news. What more do we need before we realize that we are finite creatures, and while there is much we can do to make our world better, ultimately there is a lot that is simply not within our grasp? To this our loving God says, “Be strong, fear not!” We must do what we can to make our world a better and safer place, but we must also realize our limits and that our ultimate safety is in the hands of God. We can be comforted by the realization that God loves us beyond measure, and will give us every help in our efforts to make our world a loving and safe place for everyone. Copyright © J. S. Virtus Training! What is Virtus? VIRTUS is the brand name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church. How is the best practice standard for training applied to the VIRTUS programs? The best practice standard for training requires an organization first to develop awareness through authoritative facilitator-led awareness sessions (preferably utilizing facilitators who are part of the organization). In-depth training is provided on a regular basis to reinforce the knowledge established in the initial facilitator-led training session and to introduce new points—particularly as the laws change. The best practice standard also requires frequent monitoring of the training to determine effectiveness. The VIRTUS programs meet and exceed the best practice standard.
Training: Tuesday, September 22nd from 6:00—9:00 PM Call the Elementary School to Register: (310) 831-0875
Training is open AND required for all persons that volunteer in any capacity at the parish. This includes but is not limited
to: Religious Education teachers, Lectors, Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers.

Are you a baptized Catholic who has never received your first communion and/or confirmation? Are you an adult who was never baptized as a Catholic? Were you baptized in another faith, but would like to become a Catholic? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then RCIA may be perfect for you!
Each of the situations mentioned above is unique and different, but they do have something in common: they all describe a personal journey and desire to come closer to Jesus and the Church. For more information about RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), please call Sister Mary at 310-834-5431 ext. 222.

Orthodox Christians have a saying about the reality of sin. They speak of “this holy and sinful Church, which we love.” We know all too well the effects of sin on the faith community. From our earliest days, we have seen baptism as a place where the old self dies in Christ, dies to sin, and rises to new life. Our ancestors in faith held that post‑baptismal major sin was unthinkable. Yet, as one Baptist minister once explained, “We know that sin is drowned in the water, but it would appear that the devil is a pretty good swimmer.” The origins of the sacrament of penance have to do with a similar insight among bishops in the early church. A critical question for them was whether or not a baptized person who had committed a public sin could be re‑established in church life, forgiven, and restored. Forgiven, yes, was an early answer, but restored was another matter. Penance would be a permanent lifestyle for the forgiven; they would live at the margins of the community, clearly visible in distinctive garments, and their access to the table of the Eucharist was restricted. The harsh beginnings of public penance led in time to a true treasure of our tradition: the ability to find our way home through the ministry of others, and a way for all of us sinners to experience the gentle embrace of our forgiving Lord.
