Pastor’s Corner This Fifth Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of the special sub-season called "Passiontide," which ex-tends up until Holy Satur-day. To re-

flect the somber and sorrowful mood as we approach commemorating Jesus’ crucifixion, you will often see crucifix-es and statues in churches covered during this time. The reason for the tradition is that in His sorrowful Pas-sion, Jesus' face and whole body were so disfigured by the blows and scourg-es He received that He was scarcely recognizable. The wounds our Lord endured obscured both His divinity and His humanity in our eyes. For this reason the crucifixes are veiled in the final days of Lent. The statues of saints are also covered, as they are the handi-

work of His Grace, and without the visible presence of the Master, there can be no servants. The readings this week and last pre-pare us for this time and offer us en-couragement and suggestions to help us grow in in our faith and hope. Both weeks show Jesus’ mercy – one where the Father shows mercy and compas-sion towards his youngest son who wasted away his inheritance while en-gaging in a life of sin, and the other where Jesus does not condemn the woman who committed adultery. The mercy and compassion we are given by God is a result of Jesus’ selflessness, obedience to His Father and the pain and suffering he endured for our sal-vation.

Both weeks speak of getting rid of the old self and living a new life in His Resurrection. This occurs by the gift of God’s Grace, and we simply emulate Jesus as He has shown us the way. We are encouraged to be reconciled with God through His Son who gave his life

for us, and we should imitate Him to others. When we do, we become true Ambassadors of Christ. One of the hardest tasks of the Christian is forgiv-ing others or showing compassion to-wards them when they have hurt us. It’s easy to love those who love us. The Christian is called to love their enemies and bless their persecutors. With our eyes fixed on the end goal and our heart filled with gratitude to God for giving us all that we have and are, we are bound to live a life in Him and through Him, including loving those who are difficult to love.

In these final two weeks of Lent, as we prepare ourselves for the sorrowful events of the Paschal Mystery prior to Easter, let us focus on the Passion and death of Jesus so we may accompany Him on His way to Calvary. We should remember our part in causing His Passion by our sins, and remember His great Love for us even when we are not lovable. Through His Grace he will continue to give us new life in His Resurrection.

Divine Mercy On February 22, 1931, Jesus appeared to Sr. Faustina de-livering a wonderful mes-sage and making a special request. In her diary, Fausti-na wrote: “In the evening, when I was in my cell I be-came aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing; the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening in the garment at the breast there came forth two rays, one red, and the other pale. In silence I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was over-whelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me: ‘Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the in-scription: Jesus, I trust in You!’”

Honoring the Lord's request, an image was painted by an artist who carefully followed Sr. Faustina’s directions. Upon seeing the image, Faustina wept bitterly, for the image was nowhere near the beauty of Christ. She expressed her disappoint-ment to Jesus who told her, “The greatness of this image

lies not in the beauty of the color or the brush, but in my grace.” On another occasion, Jesus told Faustina, “I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep com-ing for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, trust in You!”

Please accept our Lord’s in-vitation to receive his mercy. Pray the novena of chaplets of the Divine Mercy begin-ning on Good Friday. Mate-rials are available at the doors to the church.

Holy Week Bible Study

If you knew you only had one week left to live, how would you spend it? What would you do? Most people know that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, died on Good Friday, and lay dead in the tomb on Holy Saturday. But what about the other days of Holy Week? What did Jesus choose to say and do on the last seven days of his life? In these riveting presentations, Dr. Brant Pitre takes his knowledge of the Jewish roots of Christianity and uses it to unveil the mysteries of the most sacred and solemn week of the entire year: "Holy Week." Monday, April 15th 1. 12:40 p.m.-2 p.m. (Annex Room A)

2. 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. (Annex Meeting Rm.) For more information, call Teresa Margaglio at (337) 232-4656 or email [email protected].
