West leads the ªQ. Trumps are 2–1, East having alow singleton. Plan the play.

Kantar’s answer: West’s opening lead marks Eastwith the ªK, and West’s non-spade lead marks Eastwith some spade honors. West, therefore, should havethe ̈ K, no? Yes.

Best play is to ruff the opening lead, draw tworounds of trump ending in your hand, and lead a clubto the 10. If this loses to the king you make 11 or 12tricks. Assuming it loses to the jack and a spade comesback, win (or duck and win the spade return) and enterdummy with the ̈ A. If the king falls, that’s all shewrote. If it doesn’t, the ̈Q is discarded on the ªA anda club ruffed in the closed hand gives you one morechance — 3–3 clubs.

Given that West should have the ¨K, this line ofplay works anytime West has both the ¨K and the ̈ J,the doubleton ̈ K or clubs are 3–3. Good enough?

Kahn ducked the lead of the ¨Q and won thenext club to try to find a lie of the cards that wouldallow him to make. He decided he needed the «A-Qright. If West had the ©A and ©J, that did not leaveroom for the ªQ. So he played a heart to the 10, the«9 to the queen and king, a heart to the 9, the ªA, aspade to the 10, the ªK, and finally a third spade. IfWest cashed the «A, dummy’s ©K would be theeighth winner and the fifth spade would representthe ninth trick, and a club play would make life easy.So West played a diamond. Kahn hopped up withthe king and exited with a diamond in this ending, with declarer having eight tricks in the bag:

Bill Anderson DayThe following is a letter written by Dianna and

Joe Gittelman and their family about Dianna’s father,Bill Anderson, whose memory is being honored today.

About nine months ago, Carolyne Fox called meto tell me she would like to honor my father, Bill Ander-son, at the Houston NABC. At the time I was so takenI could hardly breathe. I was not aware that Carolyneand George knew my Dad that well. She told aboutsome wonderful times they had with him pertaining tobridge and some other times when Dad and some otherbridge friends would go to hear their son in a band.

Dad loved bridge more than life. In a tense mo-ment, he always had a cute story if it was the oppo-nents. But if he and his partner didn’t agree, he wouldsay, “Oh, get out of here!” You would always see himshaking his right leg (a habit), but when he was think-ing he would tap his right four fingers on the table. Some people look up or down for the answer, but Dadseemed to get his answers from tapping on the table. He always played the game with a spirit to win butnever at the risk of an unfair circumstance. To me hewas a true champion!

Here’s a story about my Dad. When I was nineyears old, we moved to a new house. Mom and Dadcouldn’t wait to have their favorite bridge friends overfor a team game. We still had boxes everywhere, butDad moved them to the garage and the game began. My sisters and I were in bed when I heard Mom tellingme to come with her – we needed to get out of thehouse. All of a sudden fire engines were at the house –the garage was on fire! The day before we had had afire in our fireplace, and when Dad cleaned out thefireplace he put the ashes in a metal container with apaper top in the garage! I was 9, sister Mary was 6 andsister Christi was 4, and we were scared to death! Itdidn’t take long to put out the fire, but we were veryafraid. Dad and Mom consoled us, gave us hugs andresumed the bridge game.

I have found out that Dad was more than a bridgepartner to many people. He was a real good friend tosome and a best friend to others. He was my best friendand always my favorite bridge partner.

There are two elegant ways to make the hand. One(anti-percentage admittedly) is to play three rounds ofdiamonds, ruffing in hand and lead the ¨Q to endplaySouth. Garber found a far better approach, leading the©7 and covering North’s 8 with the 10! South won andhad to give declarer a cheap club trick or return a dia-mond, giving Garber the extra entry to ruff out the suitfor 10 tricks.

A special saluteto volunteer chairs

By Toni SnowTwo terrific volunteers deserve special recognition –

co-chairs of the Volunteer Committee: Carol Irvin andGwen Tidwell. These gals have prepared and served din-ner for 50 or so volunteers in the hospitality suite eachand every day, then cleaned up after. Desserts were bakedahead and stored in the freezers of half the Houston bridgeplayers.

These two tireless workers have foregone playing toperform these tasks without complaint and with big smileson their faces. If you see Carol Julia Adult andGirlboyardee, please express your thanks.

To have just a little fun, Carol, Gwen and Tricks Ga-lore (chief chopper) donned their jeans, aprons, showercaps and signs announcing “Cafeteria Ladies” to crashthe Chico’s fashion show. Armed with spoons and spatu-las, they didn’t exactly steal the show, but they bent it a little.

P.S. Betty promises Carol this is absolutely the lastthing she will make her do.

committee has been “a real team spirit – and all thecity’s bridge players have wanted us to succeed.”

Toni was highly complimentary of the role playedby the various committee chairmen. “They have allgiven much more than we expected or ever dreamedof.”

Eric said that because the tournament was beingplayed in three hotels, there were some concerns abouttraffic and parking. “None of that has materialized,”he said.

All three expressed gratitude to Gallery Furniture, sponsor of the tournament. Said Starzec: “The GalleryFurniture sponsorship has enabled us to do a lot morefor the players, and Darrell (Luckett, promotions di-rector) was an unexpected treat with the extra gifts forplayers and his singing.”

Toni said the tournament chairs have already beencontacted by other NABC organizers for informationabout how the Gallery Furniture sponsorship was ar-ranged.

All three were complimentary of the ACBL staff, especially Nancy Foy and Jeff Johnston of MeetingServices. “They have been wonderful to work with,”said Toni.

masterpoints.“Anything she does,” Gross says of his diminu-

tive partner, “she does seriously.”Anten has done tournament bridge very well, and

she credits Gross, an attorney from Westlake Vil-lage CA, with helping her game.

Recalling their first meeting, Anten says she wasplaying at a bridge club with a less-than-ideal part-ner. In the round against Gross, Anten and her part-ner had an auction which included a 2NT bid by himand a raise by her to 3NT.

The contract was down five, vulnerable, and inthe post mortem Anten was getting the blame forthe obvious zero. Gross listened to the abusive part-ner for a bit, then said, “How good a board do youthink 2NT down four was going to be?” From there,Gross took Anten under his wing, and she has blos-somed.

Because Gross has more than 11,000masterpoints, they always had to play in Flight A.Instead of complaining about the stiff competition, she honed her skills and took advantage of the op-portunity.

Unaware of who the top players were, Antendidn’t know enough to be afraid of anyone, and shehas flourished. “She has guts,” Gross says.

Anten, a former math teacher from New York, moved to California in 1973 and played “a little”bridge before taking up the game more seriouslyabout six years ago. “At that time in my life,” shesays, “I needed a challenge.”

Since adopting her serious approach to bridge,Anten has missed only one NABC – Vancouver inthe spring of 1999 – and that was because she hadbeen involved in a serious automobile accident andwas in a wheelchair for three months.

Anten, currently #59 on the 2002 Barry CraneTop 500 list, plans to play in her first world champi-onship this summer in Montreal.

In the meantime, she is enjoying each new dayat the bridge table and all that she is learning – “andthere’s so much more to go.”

Back together againafter almost 60 years

Jack Hoskins of Indianapolis and FredMacDougall of Houston were friends when they at-tended Ohio State back in the early Forties.

Jack was not a bridge player – he took up thegame later and didn’t get serious about bridge untilafter he retired. He saw Fred name’s in the San Anto-nio Daily Bulletin (Fred and his wife had been win-ners there). He then got in touch with Fred by con-tacting the university, and they got together here afteralmost 60 years.

CorrectionBy winning her 5000th point, Karen Barrett of

Vancouver WA became a Diamond Life Master, not aGold Life Master as stated in yesterday’s Bulletin.

Watch out for crocodiles!By Barry Rigal

Most of the East-West field must have felt frus-trated by Board 13 in the first final session of the Sil-ver Ribbon Pairs. On a club lead, you can’t take ad-vantage of the free gift.

Should you brazenly hop up with the ¨K and playthe ©K, hoping North wins and returns a club? Orshould you hope South has the ©A and win the clubcheaply in hand and later lead to the ©Q?

Here’s what happened at one table. Declarer wonthe club cheaply in hand and took a spade finesse (8-3-10-queen). Back came a devious heart to the jack.Declarer unblocked clubs as South pitched a diamond, then played off the ©K with hope in his heart. Northducked of course so declarer played a diamond toNorth, lost the heart finesse, and won the next heart toplay a third diamond.

When North led a low spade (yes, the 9 would havebeen better!), declarer took the ace and advanceddummy’s low spade. Now South had to play the kingto crocodile his partner’s 9 to put the contract two down.

Another board behind in third place were Judy Schwarzand Peg Waller.

This was the fourth victory as a partnership forWeinstein and Bjerkan. Altogether Bjerkan has won11 North American titles and Weinstein has six.

Bridge is only a sideline for both women – “Wehave busy lives outside of bridge,” said Bjerkan. Theyrarely play bridge – the only tournaments they attendare the three NABCs.

“We keep up-to-date by sending notes back andforth and by talking on the phone,” said Weinstein.“I’m retired now in Las Vegas, and I’m into ceramicsand painting. I also visit the casinos once in a while, and of course I spend a lot time watching my husbandplay golf.”

Bjerkan works five days a week running a retailstore that has a gallery of jewelry, copper and pottery– quite a change from the old days when she was anactuary.

They both have the same hobby – grandchildren.Cheri has one who is a year and a half old. Weinsteinhas to spread her affections around – she has six rang-ing from six down to one and a half.

Milner was especially complimentary of Lev, whohas had considerable success with Mohan. Said Milner:“Lev brings a lot of intensity to the team.”

Mohan, Lev, Pszczola and Gawrys teamed withRosenkranz to finish second in last year’s Vanderbilt.

In the 2002 Vanderbilt final, Milner – consideredby most to be the underdog – jumped out to a a 55-22lead in the first quarter and boosted the lead to 78-51at the halfway point. It got worse for Nickell in thethird quarter as Milner’s lead grew to 156-83 after aseries of major swings.

Cheek said he and Greco had never played togetherbefore, making the Open Pairs II date at the last miinute. They were the leaders after two qualifying sessions, thanks to a 75.58% game in the second qualifying ses-sion.

North-South were JoAnna Stansby and I. East-West?We’ll draw a veil over them, but suffice it to say that oneof them has very nearly won a world bridge title. Notthat the defense did anything awful, though. East led aheart to the king, felling the jack, and West correctlyworked out that the defense should cash their diamondsbefore playing hearts for trump promotions. So West ledthe ©6. I followed with the 8, and East after some thoughtput in the 10 – is that so terrible a play if the 6 is thepartnership card from 7-6-4?

I drew two rounds of trump and led the ª10 to theace. West felt ethically constrained to play another hearteven though East really had to have the ©A for his open-ing bid. I pitched one diamond as East ruffed with the 8and then led a club around to my jack. Now I could pitchmy last diamond loser on the ªQ and finish up with plus140.
