Contract: 6NT. Opening lead: «10. Plan the play.Kantar’s answer: With nine tricks in the black

suits plus the ªA K for eleven, you need one moretrick. You have two chances: (1) lead up to the ©K,which is 50%, or (2) play the ªJ, and if covered, re-enter the dummy with a spade and lead a heart to the9, a play which requires East to have both the ªQand the ª10, approximately a 25% chance. Guesswhat you should do.

The future of our game depends on developing asustainable systematic way to bring youth into thegame. Not just a few dozen here and there, but thou-sands upon thousands nationwide year after year.

Why? Ninety-six percent of our present mem-bers are over 45, and the demographics ensure thatthe situation will worsen for decades. Existingschool programs led by volunteer teachers cannotbegin to produce enough new players to offset thesedramatic losses.

Research done by BridgeAtSchools indicatesthat a new school bridge model is needed to attractlarge numbers of school and to enable them toembrace and sustain a bridge program. The heartof the solution is a curriculum that can be taughtby existing teachers who may not necessarily bebridge teachers. The need to leverage school per-sonnel is paramount since more and more schoolsare limiting the use of non-school personnel andsince there aren’t enough bridge teachers in ourmembership base to meet the expected demand.

Another key component of the program fea-tures inter-school competitions at regular tourna-ment sites. Such program often captivate and sus-tain youth interest.

We bridge players know that our game devel-ops math, critical thing and social skills. However, school administrators and parents need strongerevidence before they will endorse it. As a bridge

community, we need to prove the educational valueof bridge to create new demand for our product.

Once there is a demand for our product, cor-porate and government grants will provide addi-tional resources to introduce it into more schools. To that, BridgeAtSchools is launching researchpilot programs to measure the game’s impact on avariety of educational outcomes. It is also devel-oping an educational curriculum explicitly alignedto the national standards for math, critical think-ing and social skills.

BridgeAtSchools does its own fund-raising andhas been actively writing grants to private founda-tions and soliciting corporate support. However, these efforts may not come to fruition for sometime. In order to continue this program which iswell on its way to becoming the premier model forschool bridge programs in North America, supportfrom individuals is needed too.

With your donation, you will not only be en-suring that the game of bridge continues for gen-erations to come but you will be solving one ofour many societal problems by improving educa-tion, reinforcing youth’s self-image and confi-dence, promoting social harmony.

When you think about what bridge has donefor you personally and others that play the game, how can you not want the youth of North Americato reap the benefits of this game we all love?

Toilet humorBy Barry Rigal

During the Spingold match between theteams captained by Richard Schwartz and ClausChristensen, Ulf Nilssen of the Christensen teamhad a problem – he had to decide how to playA-J-x opposite K-10-x. After a little thought heannounced that he had to visit the men’s room.Richard Schwartz asked him if could finish thehand first, but Mike Becker said that was OK –he had to go, too.

While he was in the men’s room, Nilssen wasstill thinking about his problem. Suddenly he saidto Becker, “I’m playing you for the queen.”

“Then you made the hand,” said Becker. “Ihad the queen.”

When they returned to the table, they pickedup their cards and put them back in the boardwithout saying a word. Schwartz and the dummywondered what was going on. “He made the handin the bathroom,” said Becker.

North was helpless. He could cash the ©A butthat would set up dummy’s queen. When North con-tinued with a heart, Itabashi took the marked finesse, cashed the ªA and played spades, giving up a dia-mond at the end for plus 590 and a cold top.

North was certain his «A would be ruffed, andhe did not want to risk setting up dummy’s secondspade honors. When North-South discovered thatdeclarer held a losing spade, they assumed that Easthad misdescribed West’s 4« bid, and they requesteda ruling.

After investigating, the directors realized thatWest’s bid actually did show a spade void, and West’sintention was to hoodwink the opening leader. Thetable result stood, of course.

Kaplan pointed out that it was difficult to imag-ine a player whose team was leading by 30 IMPs risk-ing an adverse swing. Lord, however, looked at thesituation differently. Not only did he believe theswindle would be most likely to work – he also fearedthat the opponents at the other table might gamble agrand slam in order to recoup some IMPs.

The facts: 5̈ doubled went down three, +800for N/S. After play concluded, 3© was explained as amini-splinter with three-card support, but the N/Sconvention cards were not marked as such. East un-derstood 4NT to show clubs and a red suit and stillchose to bid 5̈ . The director allowed the table resultto stand.

The appeal: E/W appealed the director’s ruling. When questioned about South’s 3© bid, North said,“I know it is something, give me a minute.” Norththen took a minute and said, “I think he has not manyspades, lots of diamonds, and not many points.” E/Wbelieved that the misinformation led to their bad re-sult. The committee examined the N/S conventioncard which was marked weak jump shifts to two-levelonly. South intended 3© as a mini-splinter which wasnot marked on the card, but was their agreement. Eaststated during questioning that she knew West had ared suit when he bid 4NT, but “he is the pro, I’m theclient. I would rather he play a six-two fit then meplay a four-four. I don’t want to declare.”

The committee decision: The committee decidedthat South had not misbid and that North had givenmisinformation. By East’s own statement the misin-formation did not lead directly to the bad result be-cause East was never going to bid 5© or 5ª. SinceEast’s statement severed the connection between themisinformation and the result, the committee allowedthe table result to stand. Strip play worksBy Barry Rigal

He reached 5̈ and West slipped fractionally byleading the ªA-K. Zia ruffed, and instead of relyingon the double finesse in spades, he decided to stripthe diamond suit just in case something happened.Did it ever!

On the second diamond West produced the queen, then Zia ruffed the third diamond high as West dis-carded. Since East was virtually marked with a 2-4-6-1 shape, Zia decided that the right play was to leadto the «Q, cash the «A and exit with a club. It worked.East had «J-x and a singleton club and was endplayedto concede the ruff and discard. This was worth agame swing in a Spingold match.

Whistles and bellsstarted ringing!

Bernie Chazen thoroughly enjoyed playing thishand in a Spingold match.

Chazen was playing in a 5-2 fit instead of the 6-3club fit, but you know how it is – you have to make do.

When he saw the opening lead of the ª2, whistlesand bells started going off in his head. He recognizedimmediately what was going on -- West was trying toreach partner to get a club ruff. He happily called forthe ªJ which won the trick. But he was still far, farfrom home. He led a low spade to West’s 10 and ruffedWest’s return of the ªA. He led a club, and West ofcourse resisted the temptation to ruff. Chazen calledfor the jack, and East went into thought for severalminutes. He could see pluses and minuses for takingor refusing the trick. Finally he took his queen.

Back came a diamond to the ace. Chazen had toleave trumps alone, so he led another club. This timeWest ruffed and returned a diamond to Chazen’s king.

It was all over. Chazen cashed the «A, droppingthe king, then the «Q, dropping the jack. He over-took the ̈ K with the ace and took the rest of thetricks, making an unlikely game in spades.

NABCs now are trueinternational events

Not too many years ago just about nobody butNorth Americans played in North American Cham-

pionships. That sure haschanged. Now a large per-centage of the top Spingoldteams are international. Al-together at least 24 nationsare represented here.

Four countries – Croatia,Korea, Indonesia and Finland

– have seldom or never had representatives here be-fore.

Other nations are regulars – countries like Aus-tralia, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, France,Italy, Poland, Russia, Japan, England, Scotland andIreland.

Also here are players from Austria, Iceland, Den-mark and Brazil. And of course there are the fourACBL nations – the United States, Canada, Mexicoand Bermuda.

tomorrow’s Daily Bulletin for the winners).Lindsay Nathan, 20, is a student at the Univer-

sity of California, Berkeley, majoring in political sci-ence and art history. She is a National Head Caddyand is a 12-year veteran of the job.

“I began caddying when I was eight, although Iused to go to tournaments with my family before Iwas old enough to work. This is only my third NABC,but I’ve worked lots of sectionals and regionals,” shesaid.

Bridge has been a big part of Nathan’s familylife — in fact, her parents met while playing bridge. In addition to her mom and dad (Cathy and MarcNathan of Thousand Oaks CA), her brother, KevinBathurst, also plays.

Why does Nathan continue to caddy?“It’s a lot of fun. I’ve met a lot of really cool

people from all over the world. Also, I’ve made a lotof friends over the years and I enjoy keeping up withthem.”

Another National Head Caddy is ChristopheSherwyn, 19, of Corpus Christi TX. Sherwyn, a stu-dent at Texas A&M University majoring in computerscience, is nicknamed “Saudi” by the other caddiesbecause he lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years.

“My father is a petroleum engineer and we usedto live in Dhahran,” he said.

Sherwyn’s family was also very involved inbridge.

“My parents have played for a long time. I fi-nally had to learn the game to survive at home! Itwas all they talked about at dinner time.”

Sherwyn began caddying in Reno five years ago.The Washington NABC is his sixth national to caddy.

One great way to show the caddies how much werespect the great job they do is to say , “Caddy, please” when summoning a caddy to the table.

ACBL Caddy Master Jackie Matthews (center) and two ofthe new National Head Caddies, Tony Zapatka ofSpringfield MO and Rob Glickman of Woodland Hills CA.

Goodwill messageWe’d like to think that everybody

we meet at this NABC will add to ourenjoyment. Realistically, of course,we know that won’t happen.

The key is our response. Continueto be polite, friendly – whether it’s an opponent oryour partner. It’s called rubbing out a problem withkindness.

West led the «K against Schwartz’s 3ª. Declarercovered with the ace and East ruffed before switch-ing to a low diamond to the queen. Schwartz decidedto allow West to hold the trick, since another spaderuff by the defense would give him control of the play.

West played a low spade at trick three, East ruffedagain and tried a low club. Dummy’s ace won thetrick. A club ruff to the closed hand was next, fol-lowed by a trump to the ace, and a trump to the queenpicking up the last trump. Declarer now played the«J, taking the marked ruffing finesse against West.Schwartz later conceded a diamond to make exactlynine tricks for plus 140.

tion. As a result she and Beth bid the hand to a heartgame, making with an overtrick, even though the part-nership had only 21 high card points between them.At the other table, Deas’ counterpart decided to pass,as would most players. As a result, the Bjerkan East-West pair bought the contract for two spades, mak-ing. That was plus 110 to go with plus 650 – 13 IMPs.
