Offered a carrot,declarer is sliced

Many foreign players will participate in theSummer NABC here in Long Beach. Two to watchout for are a pair of new ACBL members fromSweden. They are well known in their homelandand, if they play in Long Beach as they did on thefollowing deal from the 1st European OpenChampionship in Menton, Cote d’Azur, in June, they will attract notice in the USA as well.

The players are Anders Morath and MartenGustawsson, who reported on his partner’s greatdefensive play in the Open Pairs.

Morath has been in the headlines before. Heand his partner used the Carrot Club – named forMorath because of the red hair he had then – in theBermuda Bowl Championships in Manila in 1977,where Sweden finished third. He also finished thirdin the Bermuda Bowl in 1991. On this deal, TheCarrot, as he is known, offered a carrot as bait, anddeclarer got sliced when he accepted the Greek –oops, the Swedish – gift.

Morath led the ♥Q, taken in dummy. Declarerunblocked the ♠A and played a low diamond fromdummy. Gustawsson put in the 9, declarer thequeen and Morath... the 5!

Now declarer played the top spades and afourth round to East, who returned a heart to the 8,9 and king. Because Morath had played the ♦5 inperfect tempo, declarer was certain he knew wherethe ♦K was, so playing the ♦A and a diamondwould be a great way to get to his hand to enjoy the13th spade. An eerie feeling no doubt began settlingover declarer when Gustawsson produced a lowdiamond on the ace, and another low diamond ondummy’s 6.

The feeling turned to reality when Morath wonthe ♦K and cashed three hearts to defeat the con-tract. Plus 50 was worth 45 out of 50 matchpoints.Bridge purists, of course, would want to giveMorath and his partner a complete top. Well done!

Bridge survivesPakistani turmoilWe have all read, watched and listened to all

sorts of stories about all that has happened inPakistan over the past couple of years. Bridge usedto be popular in that country before all the strife.Has bridge managed to survive?

“Absolutely!” says Abdul Waheed Khan, a tex-tile manufacturer from Lahore, Pakistan. WhenKhan heard about the big American bridge tourna-ment from his friend, Dr. Manzoor Ursani ofTorrance CA, he found some business he had to doin the United States so that he could see what anAmerican tournament is like.

“Bridge is still very popular in Pakistan,” hesaid. “We have big clubs in all the major cities. Weplay the same kind of bridge you do – we play five-card majors or a strong club. We have a major tour-nament every year in honor of the late Balijie, a finebridge writer who helped promote the game in ourcountry.

“Of course bridge games in Pakistan are noth-ing like the games here. When we have a 17-tablegame, it’s chaos. Here you have hundreds of tablesplaying at the same time and everything goes sosmoothly. I can’t conceive how you do it.”

His friend, Dr. Ursani, moved to the U.S. fromPakistan 10 years ago to make sure that his childrenwould get a good education. Four of his childrenhave their degrees from Cal State at Long Beach, and the fifth just finished high school.

Khan isn’t getting many chances to play – hehas to return to Pakistan on Monday.

The venue earlier this month for the fifth WorldJunior Pairs was Tata in Hungary, 50 miles fromBudapest. The location was an Olympic Sports camp– excellent facilities and very comfortable surround-ings. Almost 200 pairs participated. Scoring was bybarometer, so everyone played the same deals at thesame time, and the updated results were availableafter every four deals.

The winners were Yuval Yener and Adi Azizi ofIsrael, followed by Jerome and Guillaume Grenthe ofFrance. In third place were Bas and Bob Drijver ofthe Netherlands.

The USA had sent five of the six players from theteam that will be favorite in the World Junior Teamsin Paris in August, and two of the partnerships(Mignocchi-Bathurst and Kranyak-Grue) did well. Here are some of the more stimulating deals from theevent.Board 8 ♠ K 10 7 2Dlr: West ♥ 10 2Vul: None ♦A K 9 8

Kranyak as West opened 2♥ (hearts and another, weak) and played there on the lead of a top diamond,on which South, Lo Presti, discouraged with the 6.When Sbarrigia continued with a second diamond, declarer was back in control. The spade shift camenow, and Kranyak ruffed the second spade, led a heartto the jack and king, ruffed the next spade, crossed tothe ♥A, and advanced the ♣Q, covered all round. Heled the ♥Q to leave Lo Presti with the master trump, and ran the clubs. When Lo Presti ruffed in he had nospade left to lead, so declarer had eight tricks.

The most challenging defense is to play spades attricks two and three. When declarer ruffs, his onlychance to make the hand is to play a diamond him-self, not to take the trump finesse. If he plays a heartto the jack, South wins his ♥K and plays a thirdspade. Declarer can ruff and unblock the ♥A, thenstart running the clubs. But at some point South canruff the fourth club and lead a diamond to his partnerto let him cash the fourth spade, on which South’sdiamond loser goes away.

It appears impossible to stay out of trouble withthe East-West cards; 4♥ looks down at least one trick, does it not? Well, Kranyak passed the West hand, andthat apparently got his side off to a good start againstKaterbau and Rehder of Germany, who at that pointwere in third place. But Grue as East opened 1♥ infourth chair, and now when South overcalled 1NT(modified Michaels), Kranyak jumped to 4♥. On alow club lead Grue put up the ♣A, ran the ♥Q, cov-ered all round, then led a low diamond from hand todummy’s queen (good!) and tried a heart to the 8 (bet-ter!). Now he had 10 tricks by simply arranging aspade ruff in hand, and virtually all the matchpoints.

To set the hand, South had to win the ♦K at tricktwo. Once he ducked, even if North had split his heart

honors at trick four, Grue would simply have won, cashed the ♣K, and then gone to dummy with the ♠Ato lead a third club, after which the defense is help-less. When North discards, Grue can win, then cashthe ♦A for his side’s eighth trick, followed by ruffingthe fourth club with the ♥7 to ensure two more trumptricks

After the Junior Pairs had finished, 150 of theparticipants loaded up their stuff and went 50 milesdown the road to the Villa park at Vargesztes. Therewe found a venue ideally suited to a bridge camp. There were enough sporting facilities to entertain theplayers, be it swimming, volleyball, table tennis orswimming.

The camp format was to play sports in the morn-ing, have a lesson in the early afternoon, play bridgein the afternoon and evening, with a post-midnightgame available for the really desperate thrill-seekers.

Here are some deals that caught my eye:

Board 21 ♠ 6 4Dlr: North ♥ J 8 7 5 3Vul: N-S ♦ K J 8 2

♣A 4♠ J ♠A K 9 7♥ K Q 10 9 ♥A 6 2♦ Q 9 7 6 5 ♦A 4♣ K 6 5 ♣ J 9 7 3

♠ Q 10 8 5 3 2♥ 4♦ 10 3♣ Q 10 8 2

Playing in 3NT after a standard 15-17 no trumpStayman auction, Alon Birman as East received aclub lead to North’s ♣A, and a shift to a spade, ducked to the queen. Back came a heart, anddummy’s ♥9 held. Birman crossed to hand with the♥A and found the fine play of a low diamond to the♦Q and ♦K – the entries to dummy are good enoughthat it is sensible to block the diamonds to try toensure a re-entry to hand. In this ending:

♠ 4♥ J 8 7 ♦ J 8 2♣ 4

♠ —— ♠A K 9 ♥ K Q ♥ 6 ♦ 9 7 6 5 ♦A♣ K 6 ♣ J 9 7

♠ 10 8 5 3 ♥ ——♦ 10 ♣ Q 10 8

North exited with a spade rather than a diamond, and Birman took the ♠A, cashed the ♥KQ pitching aclub from hand, came to the ♦A, and squeezed Southinto coming down to two spades and two clubs. Hehad the choice of endplaying South with a spade tolead clubs into the tenace, or with a club to leadspades round to his ♠K9!

The next deal features John Kranyak and YoramBar-Yosef combining very nicely together. Just lookat the West hand and decide what you might lead on

the auction shown.

Kranyak found the inspired club lead! Yoramwon his ♣A and underled in spades to John’s jack fora club ruff and another spade to the ♠Q for a secondclub ruff. Since 3♠ was the limit of the East-Westcards because of the heart ruff, +500 was worth virtu-ally every matchpoint.

The award for the Schroder Cup, given for bestperformance in the various pairs competitions, wentto Jeroen Bruggeman of the Netherlands. Meanwhilethe WBF awards for the players best exhibiting thespirit of the camp went to Kare Gjaeldbaek ofDenmark, Ben Green of England, FilipposKaramanlis of Greece, and Joel Wooldridge of USA.

Three-session KOscomplete in one day

A new regional event — one-day, three-sessionknockout teams — will debut at this tournament. They will be held on Sunday, July 20; Wednesday,June 23, and Friday, June 25.

Make your plans now. These events haveproven very popular at local regionals because:

1. No handicapping, no round-robins. Eachbracket has only eight teams. Therefore the master-point differential between the teams is very narrow.Your team will compete against other teams ofequal ranking. There are only head-to-head match-es, no round-robins.

2. No uncertainty. You complete this KO in oneday and do not have to worry about canceling yourbridge date for the next day. There is no uncertain-ty about tomorrow’s game or partner.

3. Daily bridge options. This first session of thethree-session KOs is held in the morning. If youhappen to lose in the first round, you can still playin the two-session main event (national or regional)gold-point event that afternoon and evening.

The GNT was originally a North American con-test with all 25 ACBL districts participating. Now it isa United States event, with only the 23 U.S. districtsparticipating.

In 1985 the event was subdivided into three sepa-rate events: flights A, B and C. Another change camein 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight — forplayers with more than 5,000 masterpoints — was cre-ated. Flight A is now a 0-5000 event.

The winners in each event will have their namesengraved on the Morehead Trophy, donated by TheNew York Times in memory of its longtime bridgeeditor Albert H. Morehead.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909-1966) was born in Flintstone

GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. ElyCulbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstand-ing ability as a player and analyst and made him tech-nical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was madegeneral manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He wasonly 25 when he played on the Culbertson team thatdefeated the British in the second international matchfor the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The NewYork Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and adaily column from 1959. He resigned from the Timeslate in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing andpublishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and the-sauruses that made him one of the foremost Americanlexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time fortremendous service to organized bridge. He was anofficer of the United States Bridge Association whenthat organization amalgamated with the AmericanBridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formedACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairmanof the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBLHonorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National LawsCommission and was in charge of production of theInternational Laws of Contract Bridge. He was alsothe author of the constitution of the World BridgeFederation — the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall ofFame in 1996.

Some insight into the man behind all this talentcan be found in his obituary in the November 1966issue of the Bridge Bulletin. Editor Dick Frey wrote:

“No one ever saw him lose his temper at thebridge table or heard him speak an unkind word to apartner. He smiled often, but the only player he everlaughed at was himself.

“Rarely if ever did he turn down a plea for help.Writing this, I am proud to acknowledge the debt Iowe him and to claim that he was my best friend. Thesecret of his greatness was that there are scores of oth-ers who will truly say exactly this of Albert HodgesMorehead.”

Grand Nationals now is 4 events Meckwell insurance inGrand Nationals

Four members of last year’s District 9 team areback, looking to repeat as winners of the GrandNationals Teams, Championship Flight.

The GNT began in 1973 and a District 9 team— Russ Arnold, James Beery, Jane Jaeger, RichardPavlicek, Billy Seamon and Robert Sharp — wonthe inaugural event.

Last year Russ Ekeblad, Sheila Ekeblad, JeffMeckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Michael Seamon andMark Molson led from start to finish againstDistrict 17 (Lou Ann O’Rourke, Billy Miller, RogerBates, Garey Hayden and Marc Jacobus).

Russ Ekeblad, Meckstroth, Rodwell andSeamon are back but this year their teammates areSpike Lay and Larry Griffey.

The ‘Meckwell’ insurance planIt must be nice to have Jeff Meckstroth and Eric

Rodwell as teammates. Imagine the sense of secu-rity that imparts to other team members.

Take, for example, these deals:Dlr: West ♠ 6 Vul: N-S ♥ K 9 7 4 3 2

♦ A 10♣ K 10 7 2

♠ K 3 ♠ 10 9 7 5 4 2 ♥ 8 ♥ A Q 6 ♦ K J 8 5 3 2 ♦ 9 7 4 ♣ J 6 4 3 ♣ A

♠ A Q J 8♥ J 10 5♦ Q 6♣ Q 9 8 5

West North East SouthPass 1♥ 1♠ 2♠3♦ 4♥ All Pass

Consider this contract as declarer (North). Eastleads the ♣A and shifts to a diamond. You play lowfrom dummy and West plays the ♦J. You win theace and decide to go all out to make your contract– if the spade finesse works, you can cash the ♠Afor a diamond pitch.

Unfortunately West wins the ♠K, gives East aclub ruff, wins the diamond return and plays anoth-er club.

So you’re down three. Feel bad? Don’t. Youjust won 11 IMPs.

At the other table, your insurance – Meckwell– defended the same contract in the same mannerbut they stopped off to double declarer first – andwere plus 800.

Here’s another example. You are West, vulner-able against not, and hold:

♠A J 10 7 5 4 ♥10 4 3 ♦6 3 ♣4 3.The bidding begins 1♣ on your left, pass by

partner, 1♦ on your right. You decide to exerciserestraint at these colors and pass quietly.

LHO rebids 1♥, partner passes again and RHObids 1♠, Alerted as a (possibly) artificial force. Now let’s say you decide to double – just to helppartner out in case he’s on lead.

Things now take an unpleasant turn, as LHOredoubles and this is passed back to you. Yousheepishly pass and your opponents proceed to takenine tricks without breaking a sweat.

The complete deal:♠ Q 9 3♥ A K 8 2♦ 4♣ A K Q 10 6

♠ A J 10 7 5 4 ♠ 2 ♥ 10 4 3 ♥ J 9 7 6 5 ♦ 6 3 ♦ 10 9 8 7 2 ♣ 4 3 ♣ 8 5

♠ K 8 6♥ Q♦ A K Q J 5♣ J 9 7 2

So you’re minus 920. Feel bad? Don’t. You justwon 2 IMPs. Meckstroth and Rodwell got to thelaydown 6NT and scored up plus 990.

Dress Up NightPlayers are encouraged to dress up for today’s

evening session. This is a regular feature of allNABCs.

His syndicated bridge column was considered bymany to be the best – he had a knack for getting hispoint across to even the least experienced players. Hemanaged this by making sure that every column hadonly one main point, marking it easier for his readersto focus.

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge Worldfrom 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletinfrom 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of perhapsthe most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeksto Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

“My great-great uncle taught us how to play,”said Cooper, referring to Anchorage resident WaltPease who introduced Cooper, Sean and evenBridget to the game. The children, in turn, got theirparents hooked on bridge. Their mom, Alyse, isnow taking teacher education classes.

“This is actually our second NABC to attend,”said Alyse. “The first was Phoenix.”

So how are these battle-hardened veterans far-ing? Quite well, thank you.

“I got 2.35 points! Red!” said an excitedCooper after he and his mom finished second in theFriday afternoon Intermediate/Newcomer game.Cooper and Alyse, who posted a 61.11% game, missed winning overall by less than half a board.

Sean, who played with dad, Pat, didn’t fare aswell, but looked forward to success later in theweek. Bridget and Camden spent the session inACBL’s daycare, yet even there, they were exposedto a barrage of activities that included (of course)card games.

In addition to bridge, the Galvin children enjoymusic and sports. Cooper plays the bass, the man-dolin and enjoys soccer. Sean plays the violin andbaseball, and Bridget plays the violin as well.

Alyse credits Walt Pease (and his wife, Ruth)with inspiring not only her family, but many otherpeople in the Anchorage area to take up the game.

Bid Box Alerts andAnnouncements

When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests thatplayers tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at thesame time.

When making an announcement, use theannouncement word — such as “transfer” — andtap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or announces a bid shouldmake sure his opponents are aware that an Alert orannouncement has been made.

Each player is required to have a conventioncard filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must be identi-cal and include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has asubstantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only Standard American Yellow Card conven-tions and may use only standard carding. This

restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of asubsequent round after convention cards have beenproperly prepared and approved by the director.Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6 boardmatchpoint penalty for each board played, com-mencing with the next round and continuing untilthe restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penal-ties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at

least one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties isthe encouragement of full compliance with ACBLregulations.
