Today is Cabo Mining Day at the CincinnatiNABC. Today’s Open Pairs event is the Digital Net-work Services Pairs. Digital Network Services(DNS) is part of Cabo. What is thebackground of today’s sponsor,Cabo Mining?

It started out as a mining com-pany in 1984, but it is much morethan that today. The company wasestablished as a publicly tradedcompany on the Vancouver StockExchange in 1986. But the big change came latelast year when Cabo acquired Digital Network Ser-vices (DNS).

DNS assists independent international and U.S.interexchange carriers (IXC’s), major internationalcorporations, select affinity groups and foreigncountries in identifying cost effective alternativetelecommunication needs. It provides unique, stateof the art solutions to maintain effective interna-tional networks, with significant cost savings.

DNS has formed a telecommunications jointventure for providing Peruvians with direct accessto the world-wide voice data network. Working incooperation with DNS is the Consultoria andGestion de Telecommunicaciones S.A. of Peru. Theresult of the joint venture will be excellent telecom-munications in Peru.

Grace Jeklin of Vancouver BC went to thePartnership Desk on Thursday and found a part-ner for the Open Pairs. It became clear early onthat this was not going to be a fun day. Grace’spartner had derogatory things to say on just aboutevery board. Grace was feeling worse – all shecould think of was that she had to play a secondsession with this woman. She knew the ACBLexpects players to honor their commitment andplay in the sessions for which they signed up.What Jeklin didn’t know was Zero Tolerance.

On the next-to-last round, Jeklin and her part-ner played against Lynn Deas and Curtis Cheek.Jeklin’s partner told Jeklin that she should go backto Flight C where she belonged. Deas told herthat was not a nice thing to say. The woman reit-erated that Jeklin belonged in Flight C. On thelast round, Deas and Cheek could hear Jeklin be-ing harassed once again.

After the game finished, Deas and Cheeksought Jeklin out. They told her there was no rea-son in this wide world why she should have toaccept such abuse, and there also was no reasonwhy she would have to play in the second ses-sion. They went to Henry Cukoff, the director.

Other projects in the works include fiber con-

nections between Sao Paolo, Brazil, and New York;between Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, and between

New York and Lima, Peru. Privatevoice and data networks betweenMiami and Haiti, Trinidad, Jamaica,Mexico and all Central Americancountries are also in the works.

Cabo is still in the mining explo-ration business as well. As a matter offact, Cabo officials see a connection

between mining and telecommunications – both requireexploration and follow-through once something is dis-covered.

George Johnson, who took ATC Communica-tions from a small start-up in 1982 to a companythat sold for $1 billion to LDDS (now known as MCIWorldcom) in 1991, and who now is in charge ofDNS, enjoys bridge in his spare time. He is a LifeMaster. Mike Rahtjen, a top-flight bridge player, works with DNS as a consultant.

The value of Cabo shares has risen rapidly sincebecoming a publicly traded company. At present ittrades on the Canadian Venture Exchange. The sym-bol for Cabo is CEV.

After listening to the story, he told Jeklin that shedid not have to play another session with this ob-jectionable partner. He said she would not be al-lowed to play in the second session. He also gaveJeklin a note entitling her to a free play.

Then Jeklin was told about Zero Tolerance.Under the ZT plan, no one has to accept abusefrom a partner or an opponent. If unpleasantnessarises at a table, the players should call the direc-tor and report the details. The director has the rightto impose strong disciplines if convinced that thereport is true.

In other words, Jeklin could have called the di-rector early in the session if she had known aboutZT. Once the director heard the sordid details, chances are the director would have told the offenderthat she was through for the day. At the very leastshe would have received a stern warning.

No doubt there are many others like Jeklinwho don’t know they have recourse available tothem if someone gets abusive. Both Deas andCheek now feel they should have called the di-rector while the abuse was taking place at theirtable. But they followed through and did a goodeducation job with Jeklin.

They piled up a 74.61% game, one of thebiggest of the tournament. The won the 50 and 100strats, but Renee’s 35 points made her ineligible forthe 20 contest. Cameron had only seven pointsgoing in.

The seventh grader has been playing bridge forabout a year and a half, but this is the first time hehas played in a big tournament – and it’s a first forhis mother as well. However, Cameron has discov-ered OKbridge, where he signs on as Young One.

Ornstein played in 3NT after a North-Southauction of 1 - 1 - 2NT - 3NT. He correctly duckedthe Q opening lead, then won the next club indummy to pass the 10, the best percentage shotfor the contract. Of course, as the cards lie the de-clarer can build a spade trick for his ninth winner –but something strange happened – the 10 held thetrick!

Now at teams you’d run for home with yournine tricks, but Ornstein looked a little deeper intothe hand and decided to go for broke by leading alow heart from dummy. When West played low,Ornstein ducked. That let East in. What could bemore normal than to clear the clubs while he stillhad his spade entry intact? Alas, that let Ornsteintake his 10 tricks for a spectacular score.

agrees with Matthews: “Every shift, I’ve had two orthree new people, but they catch on really quickly.I’ve had fun working with them.” The other twonational head caddies are Travis Radtke of FortCollins CO and Elaine Ware of Vernon BC.

One of the newcomers to the caddy world isBridget Conforti of Bellevue KY in the Cincinnatiarea. She is a theater major at Northern KentuckyUniversity. The chairman of the Theater Departmentat NKU, Joe Conger, is a bridge player, and hepointed some of the students in the direction of theNABC as a way to earn a few bucks during springbreak.

Conforti, 18, and Scott Youger, also a theatermajor at NKU, say they have enjoyed the new ex-perience of caddying.

“After you do this for a while, you start hearing‘Caddy!’ in your sleep,” Conforti says.

For Youger, 22, the job is not exactly what heexpected. “I thought it was going to be a lot moreconfusing.”

Youger and Conforti are in a stage productioncalled “Royal Family.” He plays her fiancé. Bothlong for careers in the theater – she in New York, hein London – and both are crazy about Matthews.“She is just wonderful,” says Conforti.

Two other rookies are Lisa Burton and MichelleGriffin, a pair of 16-year-olds from Austin TX.

Griffin is the daughter of James Griffin, three-time winner (with Kenneth Schutze) of the NorthAmerican Pairs, Flight A.

Burton and Griffin, friends at Westwood HighSchool in Austin, had nothing to do during springbreak, so they decided to make the trip to Cincin-nati. Describing her dad’s interest in bridge, Griffinsays, “He’s been playing for, like, ever.”

Says Burton: “It’s actually fun to meet newpeople from everywhere. That’s the neatest part.”

CaddiesContinued from page 1

Both want to play bridge. Says Burton: “I wantto learn so bad.”

Another new helper is Thelma Blubaugh, a Bra-zilian woman who wed John Blubaugh last week. She has enjoyed the caddying experience as “a goodway to know people and make some friends.” Theexposure to bridge has given Thelma a yen to knowmore – even to learn the game.

“I’m curious to know how it works,” saysThelma.

Chris Collins, another newcomer to caddying,is also curious about bridge. In fact, he signed on asa caddy with the idea of kibitzing as much as hecould. “I want to watch,” says Collins, 18, a fresh-man at the University of Cincinnati. “I’m just be-ginning to play.”

Collins, who is majoring in computer networksupport, says he has worked harder than he thoughthe would – but not too hard. “It’s a lot of footwork.”

Matthews says the caddies have come from vari-ous sources, including some American Bridge As-sociation players. One of them, Keith Stephens ofCincinnati, has been working three sessions a daysince Sunday. Betty Bratcher, who has worked withStephens in the newcomer games, says he has beencalled upon to fill as a player several times in theIntermediate/Newcomer games. “He’s really hav-ing fun,” Bratcher says.

Elizabeth Harris, another ABA player servingas a caddy, says she enjoys the work because “itkeeps you busy. It’s better when you’re busy.”

Matthews says that although she and the vet-eran caddies have spent a lot of time training thenewcomers, “they’re all so bright they pick it upvery quickly. People have been stopping me to tellme how good the caddies are.”

Many of the players, she adds, have been veryfriendly to the caddies. Says Matthews: “I want to thankeveryone who has made the caddies’ lives pleasant.”

Jackie Matthews, tournament director in charge ofcaddies at NABCs, is flanked by first-time caddy ThelmaBlubaugh, left, and veteran caddy Bernice Gee.

!,Dianne Barton-Paine, a tournament director

from San Francisco, was working the afternoongame Tuesday and was called to the table to make aruling on Board 15. At the time, she thought theauction was “unusual,” so she starting watching theboard as the afternoon progressed.

By the end of the session, Barton-Paine was en-thralled with the deal – so much so that she spent acouple of days researching the activity on Board 15.What she found is enough to make a baseballstatistician’s mouth water.

Barton-Paine researched the activity on this dealthrough 10 sections of the NABC Mixed Pairs andseven sections of the regional Stratified Open Pairs.

There were 31 different matchpoints results, 12different North-South contracts and 15 differentEast-West contracts.

North-South played everything from a calm 2to 4 doubled, while East-West found themselvesin a range of contracts from 2 (on a 4-1 fit) to 6,which has no play unless your mother is on defense.Come to think of it, though, mom would probablydouble you just for having such a bad auction.

Barton-Paine discovered that the most commoncontract was 3 doubled (24 times), followed by3NT by East or West (22 times).

Incredibly, spade contracts were played bySouth, East and West, notrump contracts were playedby North, East and West, and diamond contractswere played by North, South and East.

North-South contracts were2, 2, 2 doubled, 2 redoubled, 2NT

On another occasion, the same contract wentdown only three for minus 1600. The defenders whogot 2 doubled five tricks are probably annoyed thatthey didn’t get one of the redoubled shots.

There were several scores which were not re-peated, including 3 doubled making three for plus730, 5 doubled making five for plus 550 and 3by East (the 4-1 fit) down five for minus 250.

It’s clear that it’s impossible to make 4 on thisdeal from the Charity Knockouts. But Larry Moridid, thanks to a strange discard by his right-handopponent.

(1) Transfer(2) Break in tempoThe Facts: 6 made six, plus 1430 for E/W.

The Director was called at the time of the 6 bid.All players were in agreement that East took “a longtime” before bidding 5. West stated that he bid 6because his 5 bid was a misbid in their RomanKey Card system. The Director ruled that there wasno disagreement that the break in tempo had oc-curred. Pass was determined to be a logical alterna-tive to the action selected. The contract was changedto 5 made six, plus 680 for E/W.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing and were the only players to attend the hearing.E/W had 375 and 1000 masterpoints respectively.East believed that the 5 bid took at least 15 sec-onds and perhaps more as he had a lot to consider, including bidding 6 and hoping for a successfulspade finesse. West said he forgot about the trumpking (he thought he had two aces without the queenand after he bid he remembered the trump king);his correct bid was 5. He said that even before hispartner took time, he had decided that if his partnerbid 5 he would bid 6; or raise 6 to 7. E/Wnever considered that 4NT might be quantitative. They said that 4NT was always Key Card and neverplain Blackwood ever since they experienced somemisunderstandings a couple of years ago.

The Panel Decision: This appeal is strikinglysimilar to a misbid in a Key Card Blackwood auc-tion at the Vancouver NABC (Grizzly Experiencesin Vancouver - Case Two) in which the Panel hadaccepted expert opinion that passing was not a logi-cal alternative to bidding the slam. The experts inthat case were nearly unanimous in their opinionthat the bids on the table and irrefutable logic com-pelled bidding the slam. In this case the Panel wentthrough the steps: (1) Was there an unmistakablehesitation? Yes. (2) Did the break suggest that bid-ding 6 would be more successful than passing?Yes. (3) Was pass a logical alternative to bidding6 (would some number of West’s peers seriouslyconsider it?) This was the question that was put toseveral experts. Two players were consulted togetherand one was slightly on the side of allowing 6, theother slightly more in favor of pass. Both could beswayed by strong arguments and both were hard-

pressed to find a hand when 6 was wrong. Thethird player strongly supported bidding 6 whilethe fourth believed that unless the pair might be bid-ding straight Blackwood or quantitative, the 6 bidshould be allowed. The fifth player didn’t like out-of-tempo Blackwood but believed that pass was nota logical alternative, and he would not have evencalled the Director. Player six thought the reasonsfor bidding 6 were sound but self serving andwould not allow the bid. Player seven would notallow a bid because once the captain has asked thequestion, then huddles, then signs off, the resultstands failing overwhelming reason.

The Panel accepted these opinions as establish-ing that some number of West’s peers would at leastseriously consider passing. Therefore, pass was alogical alternative. In coming to the decision thePanel considered whether or not the time to re-evalu-ate was authorized, and concluded that even thoughthe time itself was part of the auction, and thereforeauthorized, the unauthorized information was thefact that partner was considering a call which shouldhave been (almost) automatic based on the reply toBlackwood. That break in tempo demonstrably sug-gested that the responder to Blackwood review theauction and the calls he made, to find the one whichgave partner the cause for this consideration. Un-like a continued Blackwood 5NT auction wherepartner is asked to evaluate his hand with a grandslam in mind, in the present auction without theunauthorized information it was a logical alterna-tive to assume that partner’s captaincy governs andthat he knows where to place the contract after theresponse. No need for re-evaluation, re-assessment,or re-count of controls is necessary. The Panelchanged the contract to 5 made five, plus 680 forE/W (Law 12C2).

demonstrably suggested. The contract was changedto 5 made six, plus 420 for N/S.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s rul-ing. South said that when his partner bid 4, whichby agreement was a slam try showing a five-cardsuit, he was intending always to bid a small slam.He said it seemed sure that his partner had at leasttwo of the cover cards he needed.

South considered bidding 4 (systemically de-fined to be Roman Keycard Blackwood; the suitabove the “agreed” minor) but was afraid in thepresent auction that his partner might take it to benatural with a five-card suit and pass.

Since 4 would be natural, he cuebid 5 hop-ing his partner could bid 5 on the way, in whichcase he would have bid 5NT—grand slam force. With their Blackwood agreements in doubt he de-cided that 5 was the only possible advance. N/Ssaid they were not experienced as a partnership, having played together three or four times before.

They had no system notes and had put their cardtogether in about an hour. They had specificallyagreed that the 4 bid was a slam try with fourspades and five or more diamonds. They had alsoagreed that if there was a clearly agreed minor, thenthe suit over the minor was Blackwood. N/S agreedthat the amount of time taken to bid 5 was quitelong.

The Committee Decision: Given that the breakin tempo was agreed upon and given that there wasno dispute that it suggested further action, the onlyquestion for the Committee was whether there wasa logical alternative to bidding 6. The Committeediscounted South’s contention that he was person-ally committed to bidding 6.

The definition of logical alternative used by theACBL is a bid that some number of the players, peers would have seriously considered. The Com-mittee considered such hands as J10xx QK10xxxx KQ and J10xx Qx Axxxx KQfor North. With the first two aces are missing whilewith the second the trump suit will be playable forno losers in fewer than 50% of the cases. The Com-mittee thought that both of these might be handswith which North would try for slam in diamondsand then bid 5. The break in tempo suggests thatNorth has neither of these hands and makes the 6bid a certainty. While most good players (of whomSouth clearly was one) would bid 6 on this auc-tion in a vacuum, there would have been some whowould have seriously considered passing to protectagainst the lighter hands North might have for hisslam try.

Therefore, under the Laws and ACBL regula-tions, it was appropriate to not allow the 6 bid.The contract was changed to 5 made six, plus 420for N/S.

In the Senior Pairs, a partnership sat down to

play against Max Hardy, author of books and a ma-jor authority on five-card majors. The visiting pairannounced that they were playing five-card majorsand that a two-level new-suit response to an open-ing suit bid was forcing to game.

The auction then proceeded: 1 - 2 - 2 - 2- PASS! The partner of the passer turned to Hardyand asked plaintively, “You wrote the book. Shecan’t pass, can she?” Hardy agreed she couldn’t pass– but she did!

The Bull spent the better part of the day withhis DC spin doctor, national media people and per-sonal assistants fending off an anti-bovine attackpublished in yesterday’s Daily Bulletin.

None other than the illustrious New York Timesbridge columnist Alan Truscott (rumored to be asecret agent of the WBF) believes that marking thenumber of tempo breaks by each player establishesa semi-reasonable manner in which to decide aVenice Cup.

Of course, the Bull would like for the time-keep-ing mechanism to give credit for fast play as a coun-terweight to slow play. This would haven given theworld’s No. 1-ranked woman player -- ACBL’s JillMeyers -- credit for fast play as compared to thereasonably paced Dutch women. Marking onlytempo breaks, the method allegedly used to mea-sure time in a world championship final, miserablyfails to account for fast play by any player.

From the Bull’s Eye View, the minimum priceof allowing a slow-play penalty to even possiblydecide a world championship 128-board knockoutmatch is the recording of exact time, which accu-rately reflects the total time elapsed by pair, not therecording of the number of tempo breaks (note thatnot even the length was recorded for sure, but totalnumber of tempo breaks only), and most certainlyslow-play penalties must not be allowed if themethod keeps time by individual player, rather thanby each pair.

If the officials are interjecting artificial con-straints upon the result of the Bull’s beloved bridge, then the judges have the highest of fiduciary respon-sibilities to be as exact as possible in keeping time.

In the unfortunate Venice Cup, the players up-

held their end of the deal and performed admirablyand with distinguished decorum – during and afterthe match.

The Dutch gesture of a rematch, accepted bythe Americans, confirms that the Europeans prefera more convincing victory and is a truly grand Dutchgesture to recover the luster of the Venice Cup. TheDutch gesture is a gesture of love for the game.Vielen dank.

Although the Bull would like to focus on thecard play rather than the officiating, it was actuallynice to have something to snort around about yes-terday while #2 Nickell blew out original # 14 Wolff-Morse, Ekeblad-Sutherlin, and Adam Wildavskypartnered by a Golden Oldie, Stakgold; at the sametime, Schwartz rode a large first half lead againstCayne-Burger, Seamon-Passell, and Lair-Smith.

Finally, into the final of the 2000 Vanderbilt:The world’s #1 ranked player, Bob Hamman,

has not won the Vanderbilt since 1973, and indeedNick n’ Dick, HamWay and Meckwell will findthemselves stuck 18 at half-time -- but in the sec-ond half Zia and Michael pass out 11 opposite 11while Meckwell relay themselves to 5* in a 4-3and Michael strikes back, making 1NT redoubledon a non-simultaneous double squeeze. Weinsteinand Levin play almost flawlessly, but Meckwell arethe world’s hottest pair at the moment and the Heartof Soloway is the soul of a Lion.

Nickell at the pole over the Horse by a nose.Hamman ends his spring hibernation early to cap-ture the 2000 Vanderbilt Cup by 2 IMPs in over-time.

In Wolff, the Nickell squad faced a former team-mate. Wolff was Hamman’s partner in most of theNickell team’s North American championships andin one of the Bermuda Bowl wins. Wolff was play-ing with Dan Morse, John Sutherlin, Russ Ekeblad,Adam Wildavsky and Ivar Stakgold.

The Wolff team was never in the match. Nickelljumped out to a 50-22 lead in the first quarter, andfollowed that with a 58-3 second stanza. WithSoloway in the lineup for the third quarter, Nickellpoured it on, winning that session, 51-4. Wolff with-drew, trailing 159-29.

The Cayne-Schwartz match was not much moreinteresting. Schwartz, playing with Drew Casen, Zia,Michael Rosenberg, Robert Levin and SteveWeinstein, jumped out to a 44-12 lead after onequarter, adding another 48 IMPs in the second setto lead, 92-23, at the half.

Cayne (Chuck Burger, Mark Lair, Ron Smith,Mike Passell, Michael Seamon) fell further behindin the second half, losing the third quarter, 56-17. Afourth-quarter rally was too little, too late, and Caynewas ousted, 184-89.

The last time the Nickell team made it to thefinal of the Vanderbilt was in 1996, when they facedthe team of Zia, Rosenberg, Seymon Deutsch, Marteland Lew Stansby. Zia’s team prevailed, 146-109.

Matchpoints drives you to taking some big po-sitions. Here is Debbie Rosenberg at work again.

Rosenberg was East, and she balanced over JimGriffin’s 3 preempt with 3NT – the first of her goodviews. She won the club lead and drove out the K,noting with pleasure that the King was offside and thatthe suit had split. She won the club return and then ranthe spades, leaving this position:

 – K J 4 K Q 9 --

 – -- 10 A Q 8 A 10 8 5 4 J 7 – 2

 – 6 5 – 10 9 8 6

Rosenberg played the J to the ace, then ran the10 (risking defeat of course if South turned up withthe king or the jack). Then she exited with a diamond, endplaying Tobi Sokolow to lead a heart in the two-card ending for plus 630 and a fine result.

How well do you know your suit combinations?Look at the heart suit on this deal.

If you play 4 you will struggle on repeatedtrump leads, but you can succeed by forcing thedefense to open up diamonds.

Look at 4 by West, however, on a club lead. You win this in hand perhaps, and now to succeedyou must hold your heart losers to two. Lead theA and then follow up with a low heart. That holdsyour losers to two if either defender has K-x or Q-x.Leading the ace and then the jack succeeds if some-one has a doubleton 9 – but that is only half as likely.(Of course, spoilsport North-South might lead theQ and beat you on the ruff – but that is too tough,I think.)

Mark Itabashi, West, and Nancy Passell, East, arrived at the aggressive 4 contract. The openinglead of the 2 went to the queen and ace. A lowheart was led to the ace, and North cashed the Kbefore exiting with a low spade, which declarer tookwith the jack. Declarer can place both minor suitkings with North because of the bidding, so whetherNorth is 5-3 or 4-4 in the minors does not matter.

Declarer now has to make the key play of cashingthe K, not playing low to the queen. Next declarermust lead the 9 to force out the jack. Declarer winsthe diamond return and runs trumps, catching North ina guard squeeze. Eventually declarer scores the lastthree tricks with the A-Q-x.

Note that North must shift to a club at trick twofollowed by another club later to break up thesqueeze. Plus 420 proved to be an excellent scorefor East-West.
