I am enjoying the Daily Bulletins on the Internet.Regarding Thursday’s Grosvenor Coup article -- the name of the play actually is the

Grosvenor Gambit from the wonderfully entertaining article written by Fred Turner andpublished in Bridge World June, 1973. Fred is an accomplished lexicologist, and I believe itis proper to retain the term he coined for the play.

The story is pure fancy, but it is written so convincingly that there are those, both inand out of the bridge world, who have accepted it as fact. The last paragraph detailsGrosvenor’s demise: “Three days after the tournament Grosvenor’s body was found on thebeach at Key Largo. The dealing fingers of the right hand had been broken, and there werecruel bruises about his head and shoulders. In spite of the note found in his room at theGolden Whelk Motel and the coroner’s subsequent ruling of suicide, there are those whostill question the circumstances of Grosvenor’s death.”

Fred sent a copy of the article to a colleague who, among his accomplishments, was amember of The American Board of Nuclear Medicine. He received the following reply:

“I am enthralled by your letter relative to the Grosvenor Gambit. I confess I know solittle about bridge that I hope sometime you will explain to me why it so infuriated some ofthe people who had it pulled on them. I certainly can’t see how that could justify murderinga man!

“Neither can I understand with what you tell me about the findings on this man’scorpse that the coroner could find it as a case of suicide! It shows that coroners are frail andprobably susceptible to pressure and other unfortunate attributes of the human special.”

Fred, not wishing to embarrass his friend, never told him the truth.

Wafik Abdou’s double of 2♥ sent the message toStuart that it was safe to lead a heart. So Stuart led the♥7. Declarer discarded a diamond from dummy andwon the queen with the king. He immediately cashedhis four clubs, and Stuart discarded the ♠6 (discourag-ing) and the ♥8 (!), not the deuce! Declarer ordinarilymight have led the ♠A and another, but he didn’t wantto let South in. So he finessed the queen into Stuart’sking.

From the way things were going, Stuart was quitesure declarer did NOT have the ♦K, so he shifted to adiamond. Declarer finessed into Abdou’s king. Abdouled the ♥6, and declarer was finished. If he covered,Stuart would run the suit. When he actually played low,Stuart was able to follow with the deuce, leaving thelead in Abdou’s hand for another heart lead through thejack.

That sent the contract down two tricks. Most de-clarers were making the notrump game, so Stuart andAbdou picked up 11 IMPs, a big gain in an IMP pairs.

One more Ron storyMany years ago in Memphis, at the M.A. Lightman

Bridge Club, a team game was scheduled. A young playerby the name of Rex Germany gathered a group to play.Total masterpoints for the team: approximately four.

On one round, Germany and his partner sat downto play against Sue Emery, then a member of the ACBLBridge Bulletin staff, and a man Germany didn’t know.

When the round was over, Germany turned to theman and said, “I sure like the way you play the cards.”

“Allow me to introduce myself,” said the stranger.“I’m Ron Andersen.”

Said Germany: “I’m sure glad you didn’t tell methat before we started playing.”

As it happened, the novices won the match, andthis was during the era of rating point slips.

Said Germany afterwards, “This is one green slipthat won’t be turned in.”

CorrectionIn yesterday’s article about the slam in which a re-

voke occurred, we said that the revoker could have savedthe hand by letting the revoke be established.

However, Tournament Director CharlesMacCracken pointed out the error of our way. “Look atLaw 62A,” he said.

We did. It says, “A player must correct his revokeif he becomes aware of the irregularity before it be-comes established.” So the defender had no choice --once he realized he had failed to follow suit, he had tomake the correction.

Escalating partnershipTheodore Bloomfield of Warrenton OR was taking

the up escalator at 10 minutes to one, looking for a part-ner. By the time he got off the escalator, he had a part-ner -- William Jenkins of Amarillo TX, who also wason the up escalator looking for a partner. The partner-ship worked. They had a 65% game for a section top.

As they were looking at the scores, someone be-hind them said, “We got a 63% game and we only hada section second. What do you have to do to get a sec-tion first?”

Bloomfield turned around and said, “Find a part-ner on the escalator.”

Ears wide openOn their way to a lopsided win in the third round of

the Spingold Knockout Teams, the Nick Nickell squadhad many large swings. On the following deal, JeffMeckstroth believed his opponents’ bidding, and he tookthe correct action. Meckstroth was playing with EricRodwell.

Meckstroth allowed that he might have made a gametry with his hand, but his decision to pass worked outwell -- on this occasion, anyway.

When the auction heated up and one of the oppo-nents sent back 4♥ doubled, Meckstroth was taking nochances. If the opponents were right, Meckstroth waslooking at a huge minus. In fact, North-South were coldfor 11 tricks, so Meckstroth and Rodwell would havesuffered minus 1480.

Thankful for the warning, Meckstroth pulled to 4♠,which was duly doubled.

North led the ♠A, and the defenders could havecollected plus 200 with a diamond switch, but Northplayed a heart instead. Meckstroth was now cold forhis contract, but he had to play carefully. He had origi-nally planned to cash the ♣A Q, pull trumps, ending indummy, and throw a losing diamond on the ♣K.

When he played the ♣A and South followed withthe jack, which looked a lot like a singleton, Meckstrothrevised his plan. He ruffed a heart with the ♠K -- thekey play -- and finessed the ♠10 to pick up trumps. Heran trumps, but the opponents defended accurately tohold him to four. Plus 790 was a 12-IMP gain. At theother table, Nickell and Richard Freeman defended aspade partial, holding declarer to nine tricks.

(1) Break in tempoThe Facts: 5♠ made six, plus 480 for E/W. Before

the opening lead, North volunteered that 3♣ promisedfour-card support. West stated he would have bid 6♠had he known his side could not have two possible clublosers. The Director ruled that there had been misinfor-mation (Law 21) and changed the contract to 6♠ madesix, plus 980 for E/W.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling.South and West appeared before the Committee. Northarrived just before deliberations began. Over 5♠ Easthesitated approximately 10-15 seconds before passing. Before the opening lead North informed the table (in-appropriately, and was informed of proper procedurelater by the Director) that her 3♣ bid should have beenAlerted as showing four or more clubs.

The Director was called. Since East had alreadypassed, the auction could not be backed up to allowWest to change his 5♠ bid. West was taken away fromthe table by the Director and stated that he would havebid 6♠ had he known that North’s 3♣ bid showed fouror more clubs (thus placing East with at most one club). The Director was not informed of East’s hesitation, andconsequently ruled that the contract be changed to 6♠made six, plus 980 for E/W.

The Committee Decision: During the appeal theCommittee learned of East’s hesitation. They believedthat the unauthorized information from it could havemade West’s statement, that he would have bid 6♠, sig-nificantly easier. When contacted, the Director at thetable confirmed that she had not been given this infor-mation and would likely have ruled differently had shebeen so informed.

The Committee did not believe that a 6♠ bid byWest was likely given the unauthorized informationfrom East, and also the fact that N/S had bid, vulner-able, to 5♣ and on that basis were known to be likely tohold at least nine cards in the suit. Therefore, the con-tract was changed to 5♠ made six, plus 480 for E/W.

The Facts: 2♠ went down four, plus 200 for E/W.East failed to Alert West’s redouble. E/W stated theywere playing support doubles and redoubles. West’sredouble showed three-card spade support. South statedhe thought the redouble showed a big hand and hispartner’s 2♠ bid was to play. The Director ruled thatthe table result would stand for N/S because Southshould have realized his partner’s 2♠ bid was a cuebidand could not be to play. The Director adjusted the E/W score to Average Minus (minus 3 IMPs) for failureto Alert the redouble.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling. E/W did not appeal the Director’s score adjustment. Southstated that he would have bid if the redouble had beenAlerted. South did not ask about the meaning of West’sredouble before he passed. The Committee determinedthat N/S were also playing support doubles and redoubles.

The Committee Decision: The Committee de-cided, in view of N/S’s own agreement to play this sameconvention, that South was not damaged by East’s fail-ure to Alert the redouble. South had an obligation to“protect” himself before he passed. North obviouslyintended his 2♠ bid to show hearts and an invitationalhand. Finally, the Committee believed that South, anexperienced player with more than 3,000 masterpoints, should have known that his partner’s 2♠ bid was forc-ing. The Committee allowed the table result 2♠ downfour, minus 200 for to stand for N/S. The Committeeallowed the E/W score of Average Minus (minus 3IMPs) to stand. The Committee unanimously agreedthat the appeal was substantially without merit and re-tained the $50 deposit.

whelmed by well-wishers offering congratulations, andWooldridge’s proud parents, Powhatan and Jill, wereamong those offering hugs.

Said Wooldridge rhetorically, “Is this a confidencebuilder? We can play IMPs!”

He was referring to the World Junior Champion-ship, a team event.

Seven years ago, Wooldridge made headlines in theACBL Bridge Bulletin by winning a regional MixedPairs at the age of 10. He was playing with his motherin a tough field. He went on to become the ACBL’syoungest Life Master that year.

Wooldridge and Carmichael represented the U.S.at the World Junior Championships in Bali, Indonesia, two years ago. The two have been partners about fiveyears.

“It’s fun playing with someone younger than I amwho is as good or better,” said Carmichael.

The Juniors were eighth in the field after two quali-fying sessions. They scored 102 IMPs in the first finalsession.

Must be something about the quality of the corn uphere. Haven’t mis-picked a match this year (no one shouldbe judged on picking fillies, they’re so unpredictable). Now we get to the semifinals.

#1 Nickell vs # 4 BazeVery difficult. Grant, Tipton

and their Poles have now won twomatches by just 2 IMPs. That is asign from a place even higher thanwhere I am now that Baze is in-deed a team of destiny. Rule #2 isnever go against a team of destiny.Unfortunately this conflicts withour rule #1 which is NEVERNEVER EVER pick againstNickell in a Spingold. Well, rulesbeing rules I have to consult withmy old pal Mr. S. who says thateven thinking about ignoring rule #1 is an overbid. Gowith NICKELL, despite the scare they received yester-day from the valiant Eisenstein squad.

#2 Shugart vs #3 CayneHog Heaven is noticably interfering with my fe-

male prognostications. Maybe I should pick against Rita, just because it is better forme to have an all-male fi-nal, which I would be 100%certain to pick accurately. However, I found a betterway. I called the airport, andRita has her plane ready todepart Saturday night, while the Cayne jet isn’tscheduled to leave untilSunday night. That isenough for me. I like theCAYNE team in a thriller

Do not miss the Vugraph presentation on Sunday. My appearance is sure to be the talk of the tournament.Hope the atmospherics hold out.

Going 100% in Spingold is true Hog Heaven

“Albuquerque is very blessed with excellent volunteers.”Gucker praised Kriegshauser for her help in plan-

ning the NABC. “I don’t know what I would have donewithout Gloria,” Gucker said. “We work well together.”

Said Kriegshauser: “We don’t have any ego prob-lems.”

Kriegshauser said planning for the NABC didn’tstretch over a long period. “We aren’t the panic type oftournament chairs. We’ve been there before.”

She also praised ACBL’s meeting planner, NancyFoy, and her assistant Jeff Johnston. “Hiring those twonon-bridge players was one of the smartest things theACBL has ever done,” Kriegshauser said.

Kriegshauser has been involved in tournament man-agement for about 10 years, Gucker since 1992.

They both said that running the Summer NABChas been “a piece of cake,” particularly in comparisonto the ordeal of managing the World Bridge Champi-onships in 1994. There were language problems withplayers and officials from 38 different countries -- and, said Kriegshauser and Gucker, the World Bridge Fed-eration simply isn’t as good at running tournaments asthe ACBL.

“The ACBL has done a magnificent job,” saidKriegshauser.

The co-chairs praised all the volunteers, but hadspecial words for Marilyn Anderson, NABC Interme-diate/Novice chairman.

“She is responsible for the table count we’ve hadin the I/N games,” said Gucker. “Marilyn was teachinga bridge course at the University of New Mexico. Shereally got the players out. She held their hands and gotthem going.”

“Marilyn is really gung ho,” said Kriegshauser. Both said they aren’t surprised at the attendance,

which will easily top 11,000 tables, but they said tablecount is not their primary barometer for a successfultournament.

Said Gucker: “The way I decide if we’ve had a goodtournament is if the players have fun. If they’re happy,I’m happy, and if the table count is up that’s kind oflagniappe.”

Bean and his wife Anne were named ACBL Hon-orary Members for 1992, the first time that honor wasbestowed on a husband-wife combination.

Bean was the editor of Mad, Mad World of Bridge,a publication that strongly championed players of lessthan expert class.

Here’s a sample:A couple was playing and having a bad night. By

the time they got to the last table, Charlotte had takenabout all the lessons she could stand and when Bobstarted in again, she rushed away from the table intears.

Bob and his two opponents sat for a while in si-lence and then Bob said, "Sorry, fellows, but the statemy wife is in, she may not return at all. Just to getthis last board over, why don’t we leave my wife’scards in the board and I’ll bid both of our hands.Charlotte’s hand will remain concealed until the bid-ding is over."

The opponents, men with wives of their own, shrugged and agreed. Bob opened the bidding withone heart. LHO passed and Bob, bidding Charlotte’sunseen hand, raised himself to two hearts.

RHO passed and Bob bid three hearts. LHOagain passed and Bob went into a trance. After con-siderable trancing, he came to and in a firm tone hebid four hearts.

This ended the bidding and after the openinglead, Charlotte’s unseen hand was spread as thedummy. Bob was lucky and he did have a chance ofbringing home the contract.

Play progressed to the last three cards. The leadwas in dummy, three tricks had been lost and thenext play was crucial. Bob studied a moment thenled, finessed and lost for down one.

About this time Charlotte had regained her com-posure in the ladies’ room and decided she wouldfinish the tournament if it killed her.

She returned to the table at the same momentBob had to make the critical play. When it failed, helooked up at her accusingly and said, "You justcouldn’t pass three hearts, could you?"

- - -Our good friend Bob had the good fortune to play

an event with his good friend Lew Mathe. Bob wasn’tawestruck or anything but playing with such an inter-national star gave Bob a case of nervous prostra-tion.

After flubbing six or seven hands, and sufferingthe tortures of the damned, Bob misplayed still an-other. He looked up at his partner and groaned, "OhGod."

Lew, with just a note of pity in his voice, replied,"You can call me Lew."

- - -Bobby Wolff and I are compiling a glossary of what

we call 'ACBL Board Daffynitions.' I think they applyto all deliberative bodies. Here are a few samples:

Looking into Six-year study minimumCareful consideration Not to exceed 60 secondsExperimental tournament Permanent after first yearFully informed Somebody mentioned it onceLow smoking Smoking in a crouched positionMay I speak to this motion I’m going to, no matter

My friend, The Wilmette Whizzer, worked at thehospitality desk and reports that one day a lady calledto ask if she could kibitz her nephew and niece whowere playing in the mixed teams.

The Whizzer advised the lady that the mixedteams was over and maybe she meant the Swissteams, which was then being played.

"Oh, no!" came thereply. "Not a chance --they’re Americans."

- - -Now let me get to the

reason why I publish theMMWOB anyway. It is toremind you that in themad, mad wor ld ofBridge the secret life ofWalter Mitty springs toreality and the GeorgePlimptons quarterbackthe Lions much oftenerthan you realize.

At the Coronado FallNationals, the HongKong flu bug bit a lot of people and I was pressed intoservice as a substitute.

I played one session of the Life Master Men’sPairs as a fill-in with the great Edgar Kaplan as mypartner. The only thing I remember for sure is thatafter one hand Edgar leaned across the table andvery graciously said, "P.X., I cost us two tricks in thedefense."

Guess how many times I could have done thesame but then he is E. Kaplan and I am P.X. Bean --it wouldn’t sound the same!

The next day I filled in for one session of the LifeMaster Women’s Pairs. Without doubt, this is thetoughest event I ever played in my long, but as yetundistinguished, career.

Never again -- I would rather swim in a tank fullof pirhanas than to be stuck in a room full of womenwho were whiling away an afternoon at the bridgetable.

My next big moment came when I was asked tosubstitute in a session of the Open Pairs with EasleyBlackwood. He didn’t insist on my playing his con-vention and I accorded him the same courtesy.

The net result was a sparkling 149 (which is still25 points better than my lifetime average).
