EDITORIAL

There is a question I want to ask. As

an online nation we have become

dependent on certain icons to be the

perpetual example of good. Nelson

“Madiba” Mandela has been the

protective shadow our humanity

has been able to stand in away from

the garish sun. He has offered us

the perfect example of what it takes

to be human and will leave a legacy

behind of the purest nature. When he

has gone the example he has left will

outlive any of us reading this.

However, who will be the protective

shadow now?

Difficult to match he was a man who

spent twenty seven years in prison

because he wanted freedom and

equality for all people in the world

during a time when racism had become

the characteristic of South Africa. Not

only did he lead the country through

democratic elections, but he took

on the presidency with the aim to

develop world freedom and equality

and became a symbol and an example

of tolerance, cooperation and peace.

Winning the Nobel Peace Prize,

setting an example the whole way

we often forget that he did all of this

while being long in the years. And at

an age where most people are settling

down for retirement he was dancing in

parliament with his colourful African

shirts.

We are fortunate that his message

has reached the hearts of an entire

globe, of an entire world and inspired

so many people to be more because it

means that we are not short of leaders

to take his place.

I do not mean money-minded

politicians gunning to be the first

person to drop the Madiba Bomb in

their speeches to rally their followers

and gain additional supporters, nor

do I mean tyrannical dictators who

claim to follow in the same footprints.

What I mean are people. People like

you and me who are not looking to

run a country or a national or a group,

but are looking to only help. Only to

support, only to do their civil service.

A gambling man may predict that such

a person will herald from the ranks

of celebrities across the First World

Nations, perhaps an actor or a singer

who will rise up with the ability to help,

whose famous face seen amongst

the poorest and most vulnerable

people will inspire the rest of us to do

something more.

However, there is no telling. This is

an unprecedented situation where

the internet has made it possible for

one man’s message to be distributed

far and wide, reaching the minds of

people across the planet. In a very real

way, his spirit lives in all of our hearts

and this could be the spark that is

needed to inspire you to take his place.

You could change the world.
