The word “coyote” is derived from the Nahuatl (a people foundin central Mexico) word “coyotl.” The coyote’s scientific name,Canis latrans, means “barking dog.”

“If coyotes are there, they leave sign.”

March 2014

The annual Save A Fawn Hunt has been scheduled for March 29th. This will be a one day hunt onSaturday only. As in the past, this hunt is designed to aid in the predator depredation of the deer andantelope populations above the Mogollon Rim.

Prizes to be awarded. This year, APC will be giving gift card prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Pointswill be awarded using the same points system employed at the Multi-Club Hunt. Lions are 100 pts, Bob-cats are 50 pts and coyotes are 10 points. All other harvests are 5 points. Since it is still going to befurbearer season, bring in any bobcats or foxes that you get during the day. $60 for 1st, $40 for 2nd and$20 for 3rd place.

The game units that we are targeting are 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, and 5A. We would like everyone to tryand hunt these areas if possible. The idea is to eliminate as many predators as we can to help curtailthe fawn mortality in both deer and antelope..

The check-in will be at the Red Onion Lounge/Restaurant in Overgaard. The address is 1931Highway 260, Overgaard, AZ. 85933. Phone: (928)535-4433. Al & Diane’s Red Onion Lounge.

Check-in will be at 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Saturday, March 29 and APC will buy your dinner in therestaurant. Be there as close to 6:00 PM as possible. Please leave your harvests in your vehicles.

The rim sports several places to camp near the highway and the check-in location. If you don’t want tobrave the elements and would rather camp indoors, there is the Sawmill Inn in Heber (1-928-535-5053) orthe Forest Lakes Lodge in Forest Lakes (1-928-535-4727) Forest Lakes is about 15 miles west ofHeber on Highway 260.

Stephen Crooks on Balistics etc. 22-250 is not good for hunting bobcats at close range. .17 HMR is good for fox and bobcats close. Generallyno exit wound. 40 grain bullet is good for a .223 round for coyote. If reloading, make sure your powder volume is NOT below 70%. If so, use a filler. Filler will prevent overflashby the primer and detonation. Cream of wheat, oatmeal, cotton all work well as a filler. Use a powder that fills thecase the most. Do your load development in the summer. Varget powder is more temperature tollerant. Keepyour bullets out of the sun to keep preasure from becomeing extreme. Blue dot powder is good powder for .357.It also shoots a blue flame that is impressive at night. Reloader 19 has the highest consentration of Nitro Glycer-ine and heats barrels.

Kara Jensen on Painting Your Rifle or Shotgun Prep and clean the surface to be painted with acetone for plastic or sand wood stocks with fine grain paper.Ace hardware sells flat spray paints in camo colors. There are also kits with three colors of camo. Fill yourscope lens area with cotton and close the cover or tape. Start with the darker color first. Lay lace panties overthe dark color and then spray the lighter color through the lace. You can see Kara’s YouTube video on “How tocamo a rifle - Girl Style”.

Jeff Stewart on Camo Clothing and other topics Jeff took his first coyote in 1969. He says, stay away from using blue and yellow colors of clothing. Stick withearth colors. Rules: 1, Stay Quiet. 2, Leafy camo clothing cover. 3, Keep your body odor down. Try not to wearballcaps. They tend to keep the odor in since the hats are worn often and never washed. Wear a booney typehad that you can wash. Tan or Green appear gray to coyotes. There is a great article on the APC website oncolor. Scent: Wipe down your ecaller occationally to keep the human scent down. Use uncented and hypoalergenic detergents to wash your camo clothing. Dry on a cloths line, not a dryer because of fabric softenerscent in the dryer. Be versitile and bring different patterned camo wear with you in case the topography changes.Keep away from fires and cooking while wearing your camo. Electronic Callers: Jeff likes the Foxpros and Western Rivers ecallers. An e-caller with a remote is a must. Aremote and caller with removable/replaceable batteries is a must also. Set the caller at least two feet aboveground to make sure the sound is projected. Wait 5 to 7 minutes after placing your caller before starting your call.Do not aim your remote at the caller to change sounds. Hold the antenna verticle, it is not a TV remote. Knowyour equipment. Calling: Start with chirps, stop and look around. Progress to louder and final sound should be a rabbit indistress. Food sounds to a coyote are always good. Sight, Sound and Scent are the 3 senses you have tocontend with. To smell is to “believe” If coyotes are not coming in at 10-12 minutes. Stay longer up to 45 min-utes.

Rich and Tyler Higgins on Mouth Calling: Coyotes come to the call for: Entertainment, Curiosity, Competition, Greed, Territorial/social and Hunger.Hunger is generally the lowest on the list. Coyotes have been seen coming to the call with rabbits in theirmouths. Double read calls sound travel the furthest. Higher pitch calls are best for bobcat. For calling Lions, use fawn distress or deep sounding jackrabbit. When on stand, be alert for birds and other animals fussing. They will pinpoint predators that you may not beseeing. Watch Ravens. They will dive bomb or fly 12 feet or so above coyotes. If raven caws 3 times it is givingyou up. Red Fox urine is a great cover and masking scent. Terry cloth around bottom of boots with urine scent cancover your scent. Porath “Confounding Mist” is recommended by Rich.

There was much more information given out at the event than can be noted here. Don’t miss the Predator CallerWorkshop next year.

Rabies Cases on the rise in SCCby Curt PrendergastNogales International - Posted: Friday, February 14, 2014 8:26 am

The state issued a warning for Santa Cruz and Pima counties on Tuesday, citing a marked increase in rabidskunks in the first weeks of 2014.

In Santa Cruz County, 23 rabies cases were reported in 2013 and so far in 2014, with 19 of those cases reportedsince November, according to Lt. Jose Pena, head of the county’s Animal Control Services Department.

More than half of the cases were reported in Tubac, while three were reported in Rio Rico, two each in Sonoitaand Patagonia Estates, and one each in Patagonia and Nogales, Pena told the members of the County Board ofSupervisors during their regular meeting Wednesday.

State officials told Pena they are “very worried about the situation,” particularly with summer on the way, whichcould make the situation “a lot worse,” he said.

“Right now, Tubac is really getting most of them, but it seems like it’s coming down through the Rio Rico area,” hesaid.

In the Arizona Department of Health Services advisory issued this week, state vetyerinarian Perry Durham toldresidents of Santa Cruz and Pima counties: “If the family pet, horse or livestock is bitten by a rabid animal, it is atrisk of catching the virus if it isn’t up to date on its vaccinations. Unfortunately if a wild animal bites a family petthat hasn’t been vaccinated, the pet will have to be quarantined, perhaps euthanized,” Durham said.

The rabies virus attacks the nervous system and humans and animals can be infected if they are bitten by a rabidanimal or come into contact with an infected animal’s brain or spinal fluid, according to the advisory.

Residents should avoid touching wild animals, vaccinate pets and livestock, and call the county health depart-ment if bitten. Hunters should wear gloves and protective eyewear when field dressing animals.

Rabies is almost always fatal when symptoms begin, but preventive medicine can stop symptoms.

Santa Cruz Animal Control can be reached at 520-761-7860. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has a 24hour dispatch line at 623-236-7201.

Thought you might want to include the attached article in the next newsletter. Not all animals with rabies willshow symptoms such as foaming at the mouth. There is a “dumb” form of the disease where the animal isessentially symptomless yet still infected and can infect others. Even the fur where the animal licked itself can becontaminated and infectious.
