A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Important Information About

North/South Corridor, the Various

Cargo Routes to Dulles Airport and

the Impact to Brambleton -

I can’t bring enough attention to this topic and have decided to write my monthly article on the Common-wealth of Virginia’s quest to “Improve Cargo Access to the Airport” by using Brambleton’s southern properties/border as the preferred route. Over the last few months there has been renewed interest by the State, Coun-ty and Regional Authorities to study and improve North/South traffi c in the region and improve access to the western borders of Dulles Airport. The current studies in progress have the potential to negatively impact the community and its future.

As many residents may have recently been made aware of, VDOT is current-ly studying the need and impacts re-lated to improving access of primar-

ily cargo and freight truck to Dulles Airport through a limited-access road. The study currently includes three options: No-Build, Alternative 2 (Brambleton), and Alternative 3 (Route 50).

The Brambleton Community Asso-ciation (BCA) Board of Directors is ex-tremely concerned how Alternative 2 will impact the community and have taken action to oppose Alternative 2 at this early stage in the study. The BCA Board is specifi cally concerned that the Alternative 2 route will nega-tively impact the community in the following ways:

• Economic Growth – Brambleton’s developer has plans to develop the southern portion of the prop-erty with facilities and amenities that will benefi t the entire com-munity and region. These plans include residential, business and a college campus. This proposed

their opposition to the County and State; encouraged residents to be-come informed and involved; formed an ad-hoc committee focused to take action related to these projects and to continue to educate Brambleton’s residents; developed a webpage dedicated to the Association’s posi-tion; and will continue to take action as deemed necessary.

The BCA Board strongly encourages all Brambleton residents to become educated and informed to the trans-portations projects being proposed and studied; and to take action through emailing elected offi cials, speaking out at public meetings or calling their elected offi cials to dis-cuss their concerns. The Association cannot fi ght this battle alone. Your support and involvement is neces-sary. Please don’t hesitate today and regret it tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Rick Stone PCAM, LSM General Manager

noise barrier walls and large volumes of cargo/freight truck traffi c. The planned uses for the parcels identifi ed in Alternative 2 need to be compatible with the adjacent homes and community.

• Other Reasons Why – Route 50 is already identifi ed and approved as a limited-access road and should be used for that purpose. The route desired by the airport should be built on airport prop-erty when possible; with airport (MWAA) and Federal funding, not State and County funding. The impacted public needs time to understand all options being considered, related funding and methods of those calculations, and a chance to propose and consider other alternatives that are less impactful to communi-ties, the local economy and the environment.

BCA has had a few weeks to under-stand the scope and impact of nu-merous projects that the State and County have been discussing, con-sidering and studying for years. I ad-

vise and encourage every Bramble-ton resident to thoroughly review all information that is available to the public and consider how these vari-ous projects will impact your quality of life, property and neighborhood. Following are a few online resources that you can visit for more informa-tion.

approach to assist with the education, awareness and promotion of safe and secure lifestyles. Some key actions in past years have included working with LCSO to promote their news releases and Neighborhood Watch program; communicating neighborhood crime trends and proactive tips and educa-tion directed towards those trends; and hiring private security patrols for Association facilities.

To bring additional focus to these important matters, the BCA Board approved the creation of a Safety and Security Advisory Committee at its January meeting. The charter of the committee has set its scope of work to:

• Review resident concerns related to community traffi c safety and work with staff and local offi cials/agencies to address issues as ap-proved by the BCA Board;

• Interact and communicate with residents, staff and County to promote a Neighborhood Watch

It’s that time of year when the days and nights start to warm up and people fi nd themselves spending more time outside. Brambleton residents take the opportunity of the warmer day to recreate and play throughout the community. Criminals and vandals are not much diff erent. They enjoy the warmer days to look for crimes of opportunity.

Crimes of opportunity are committed when a perpetrator sees a chance to commit the act at that moment and does so. In Brambleton these crimes most often occur when an owner leaves a garage door open overnight or their vehicle’s door unlocked with valuables in plain view. The Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Offi ce frequently releases information regarding trends that they see and encourages resi-dents to take precautions to secure their property.

In addition to the County’s action, Brambleton Community Association has always taken a unique proactive

program and related programs;

• Work, communicate and interact with BCA Staff to address identi-fi ed security or safety issues on BCA Common Area or private streets;

• When authorized by the BCA Board, speak before County or State offi cials in regards to com-munity safety & security related issues, concerns, and requests.

The BCA Board is seeking seven resi-dents to serve on the newly-formed committee. If you would like to give your time and have an interest in a safe and secure community, please consider volunteering for the com-mittee by submitting an application to General Manager and Board. Time commitments are minimal and based upon your desire to serve; terms can be set for one or two years. Please contact Rick Stone at [email protected] with any questions or further information.

Brambleton is a very pet-friendly com-munity. There are lots of dogs that are well-loved residing in Bramble-ton. Although “Buddy” may be your best friend, he may not be loved by all if his owner doesn’t pick up after him on a consistent basis. The Association regularly receives reports of pet own-ers’ behavior, but in the recent cold months these reports have become more frequent. Policy Resolution 7, Pet Policies, outlines grounds for com-plaint and fi nding of a community nui-sance:

ASSOCIATION MAINTENANCE

Rick Stone, General Manager

Two years ago Brambleton Community Association launched the Brambleton Community Garden Plots which are available to all Brambleton Residents. We have had a great deal of interest in the 35 plots from residents and are excited to off er this program again for the 2013 growing season!

The plots will fi rst be off ered to those residents that participated last year. Past participants were sent an email on February 6, 2013 to sign the agreement and make payment to reserve their same plot by March 11, 2013. All plots not reserved by this date will be become available to those on the waitlist. If you would like to be placed on the waitlist to be considered for a plot, please contact Sarah Conrad at [email protected].

Residents who are assigned a spot through the waitlist will need to sign the Garden Plot agreement and make a $50 annual payment for the plot by close of business on March 18, 2013.

The annual cost for the garden plot is $50, with checks being made out to the Brambleton Community Association (BCA). BCA will then make a donation to Loudoun Interfaith in the amount equal to 100% of the funds paid to the garden plot program. Rules and regulations pertaining to this program can be found on the BCA website under Documents and Forms. Residents can also contact Sarah Conrad with all questions and concerns pertaining to the program at [email protected]. We hope you all have a successful growing season!

If you weren’t able to participate in the Roving Dinner that was held on February 9th, you missed some BIG fun! The Roving Dinner concept is simple: Split into groups, starting in one of several homes, enjoy food and beverages, then move on to the next home. During the fi rst round, people met and mingled with neighbors, and by the end, they were handed a card that sent them to a diff erent home with a new group of people. This process was repeated a few more times, with the last stop bringing ev-eryone together at the Community Center for dessert. Each individual or couple participated in either hosting or co-hosting a session, or providing a dessert and beer or wine at the des-sert session.

The host and co-host for each home

were to come up with a theme. For a fi rst year event, the themes were pret-ty amazing. There were some impres-sive and creative hosts who cooked up themes like Cuban (complete with Carmen Miranda costumes), The Grammy’s, Top Chef, Vegas, Breakfast for Dinner, Vegetarian, Aphrodisiacs, Tapas and more. These are going to be hard to beat for next year!

Resident Kathy Turley spearheaded this fi rst time event and was pleas-antly surprised with the turnout. “I hoped to get 60 people participat-ing, and when registration reached 75, I was happy. When we ended up with just over 80, I was thrilled. I was happy that everyone had a great time, enjoyed some delicious food and libations and made a few new friends along the way. With such a

large neighborhood like Brambleton, it’s easy to get caught up in your part of the “bubble”. This was a way to bring all four corners of Brambleton together in a more intimate setting”, explains Kathy.

Congratulations and thank you to Kathy for a fantastic job organizing this event. When she fi rst approached the activities committee with her idea, we were all very excited about it. I was even more excited about it when all she needed from me was to take the information, create a fl yer and make sure it was promoted! She truly did an amazing job pulling it all together, and we can’t thank her enough. Looking forward to next year’s Roving Dinner!

Thank You to Kathy Turley on a Successful Roving Dinner!Beth Huck, Community Lifestyles Manager

On the fi rst Saturday in February the BRAM Events Team hosted its fi rst kids crafting session of the year. Al-though it was cold and there were a few fl urries that day, Punxsutawney Phil assured us that spring was on its way and what better way to warm it up than with some Valentine crafting fun!

At this resident only craft session, children created some amazing Val-entine cards, crafts, and edible crea-

tures. As each child entered, they started off by decorating a bag to hold all of their wonderful creations. From there they moved from station to station where they got to make at least one or more of the other crafts.

One of the favorite activities the children participated in was assem-bling the edible love bugs made of marshmallows, sprinkles, cinnamon jelly hearts, and other edible décor. They used their thumbprints to cre-ate hearts on bookmarks with vari-ous colored papers and valentine’s themed ribbon. They also fashioned cards made with lovable elephant, puppies, and butterfl ies, all using dif-ferent sized hearts. In true Bramble-ton spirit, they also made extra cards & creations for kids at the Children’s Hospital in Fairfax.

And if that was enough to keep them busy for two hours without mom or dad, they decorated a heart shaped sugar cookie, which they also took home. We made sure to reward our loveable little artist with some Valen-tine’s mini cupcakes, goldfi sh crack-ers, and waters. We rounded out the day by fi lling the media room with laughter and giggles while watching “It’s Valentine’s Day Charlie Brown”.

We want to thank our volunteers from Briar Woods High School Key Club and Future Educators of Ameri-ca – They were awesome!!! Our next crafting session will be held just in time for Mother’s Day, on April 21st. At this session, kids will be creating Mother’s Day cards and gifts. Space will be limited, so sign-up early. We hope you will join us!

StoneSpring Emergency Center

Breaks Ground

The StoneSpring Emergency Center

at the corner of Gum Spring Road and Route 50 has broken ground

and is slated to open this fall. Stone-Spring will have 12 private rooms, a full-service laboratory, a CT scanner and other important technologies. It will operate as a department of Reston Hospital Center and similar to a hospital ER, it will operate 24 hours a day. The center will be built on the same 50-acre property where HCA Virginia’s StoneSpring Medi-cal Campus will open in December 2015. According to John Deardorff , president and CEO of HCA Virginia Health System’s Reston Hospital Cen-ter, “StoneSpring Emergency Center will provide vital medical services to residents along the Route 50 cor-ridor. We’re delighted to be one step closer to making this facility a reality for Loudoun County.” HCA Website: http://ht.ly/hmxAH

Problems Sleeping? Speak to the

Dentist

Bloo Dental wants you to know that

National Sleep Awareness Week is March 3 to 10.

“What is the connection between sleep and dentistry?” you might ask.

Well, let’s start with the big picture. According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than 18 million American adults have sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing is briefl y and repeatedly interrupted during sleep.

Since people with sleep apnea tend to be sleep deprived, they may suff er from sleeplessness and a wide range of other symptoms such as diffi culty concentrating, irritability, sexual dysfunction, learning and memory diffi culties, and falling asleep while at work, on the phone, or driving.

Sleep apnea has also been linked to high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, stroke, obesity, diabetes and depres-sion.

A common treatment for sleep ap-nea is the use of a continuous posi-tive airway pressure device, or CPAP. CPAP is a mask that fi ts over the nose and mouth, and gently blows air into the airway to help keep it open dur-ing sleep.

While CPAP is typically very eff ective, many cases of mild-to-moderate ob-structive sleep apnea can be treated with less intrusive dental appliances, which reposition the lower jaw and tongue to easy breathing. These den-tal appliances are gentle and easy to wear.

Bloo Dental off ers customized dental appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea as well as excessive snoring. For more information, contact Bloo Dental at (703) 327-5533.

but they are not approved in the U.S.

Please be very careful with the dog treats you feed your dogs! Do your homework and read your labels. This could avoid very costly vet bills in the future and very serious, even fatal diseases in your precious pets. The general rule is buy American made treats only. Grain free are best, and pure natural ingredients. Shop-ping at a whole food pet store, or specialty natural product dog food store is safest. Most of them will not buy anything but treats made from pure ingredients, not fi llers, made in America. If you currently own any dog treats made in China throw them out! Their dog treats are not audited for safety by the US, but instead they are allowed to “self audit” and provide a report to the USDA. The products such as those above that are being recalled are all coming from China. The general fi ndings in these prod-ucts are high toxic levels of antibiot-ics. These are much higher then our government standards. The chickens are given high level of antibiotics to prevent sickness in overcrowding conditions.

These in turn cause serious health problems for our dogs. The most common treats being recalled are the jerky treats. The most common symptoms after eating these jerky treats are as follows: 1) increase wa-ter drinking; 2) increase urination;

Brambleton resident and avid dog lover, Tina Gerin, moved to the com-munity in November of 2011. She has 7 years experience working with dogs and owns and operates her own dog walking/pet sitting business. She off ers her advice to residents on everything from pet care and training to referral of pet services.

I felt compelled to write this article on dog treats after seeing yet an-other recall reported by CBS news on Milo’s kitchen dog treats. The recall is below:

• Nestle Purina PetCare is taking Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats off the market, while Milo's Kitchen is recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats.

• The chicken jerky products, which are made in China, may contain minute amounts of an-tibiotic residue, the companies said Wednesday. The antibiotics have been approved by Chinese and European Union regulators,

3) vomiting; 4) diarrhea; 5) kidney damage.

The symptoms usually occur about 4 days after consuming the treats. If you fi nd your pet becomes or has become sick after eating jerky treats or any other treats made in China for that matter, save the packaging and have blood work and urine test-ing done by your vet immediately. If toxicity is found your vet should then report this to the USDA. Some of these treats made in China may be confusing, the ones mentioned above are companies located in the US or owned by the US, but the prod-ucts are made in China. The package must clearly state where the product is made so read carefully. Don’t as-sume because it is a US company that the product is ok and made in the US.

The safest rule to follow is to buy whole ingredient, grain free, natural , or organic pet treats made in the US only.

If you have any questions or need sug-gestions for some great safe treats for your dog please dont hesitate to con-tact me at [email protected]!

In an eff ort to bring together all of our communities across the counties and states, we are declaring March 15, 2013 to be Fight Hunger Day.

We are inviting schools in this area to collect quarters, and restaurants and stores around the participat-ing schools to donate a percentage of their proceeds to this mission on March 15th. The money collected will go towards the purchase of food that Stop Hunger Now! will provide us to package into meals which will then be deliv-ered to hungry children in one or more of 76 coun-

On January, 14th, Legacy Elemen-tary School kicked off their campaign to fi ght world hunger at their "Stop Hunger Now" pep rally event.

The students at Legacy Elementary (through the Legacy Elementary PTO Kids Helping Kids Program) were given the opportunity to vote last year and have chosen to give food to children outside of the U.S. by work-ing with Stop Hunger Now!, an inter-national hunger-relief organization. Kids and families throughout North-ern Virginia and various states, in-cluding NY, MD, DE, CA and TX, have shown interest in and support of our worldwide mission.

Through numerous fundraising ef-forts, the students at Legacy are hop-ing to surpass their monetary goal of $7,000.
