HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE EASTER

What an incredible start to the year we have had here at Weipa Community Care Association Inc.! We have kick started the year with two big events, some new faces in the team and not to mention some incredible support from the community. In March we hosted our annual International Women’s Day celebration and Nita Howells our brave Support Worker decided to raise funds and brave the shave for the Leukemia Foundation.

We welcomed Gemma Spencer to the team our new Family Day Care Co-ordinator in which she has been an absolute pleasure to work with. The Family Support Workers team have been busy planning Domestic Violence month to be held in May.

Again, the support that we have gained from community is absolutely priceless to us. Special thank-you to all of the business and individuals who supported International Women’s Day and Shave for a Cure.

Also a special mention to Margie Berry for your tasty donated treats and Sharon Carter for your continued support.

We have had a very busy couple of months with some amazing events and support from the community. The year kicked off with our VIW FASHION NIGHT here in the Centre as a fantastic way to spend time with friends and shop from some of the hand picked fashion items available in the Op Shop.

This was the perfect lead up to the 2015 International Women’s Day Denim and Diamonds Gala Dinner. During the evening guests enjoyed a silent auction and raffles, photobooth, inspiring guest speakers, live music, three course meal and surprise entertainment by some of our local dancers. Over $2500 dollars was raised for improvements and renovations to the Community Op Shop. Guests also enjoyed a goodie bag full of important resources from local health facilitators and a special gift on arrival.

We have had an incredible start to 2015 and the support from community has been overwhelming! If you would like Weipa Community Care to be a apart of your next event or would like to support an event contact us today!

YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT ON!Nita Howells braves the shave and raises funds for the Leukemia Foundation!

Our second big event for the year was a family Fun Day, celebrating our diverse community and why we love living in Weipa and Australia. It also just so happened to be World’s Greatest Shave weekend and our Support Worker Nita Howell’s was braving the shave!

During the day kids and families enjoyed the gold coin donation entry to the swimming pool, sausage sizzle, coffee, ice-cream van and sand art. In 2015 we also have sponsored the Razorback Oztag team so

members of this great group were there to help us run the day. All proceeds went to Nita’s fundraising and to support the Weipa Community Care Association Inc. We helped Nita successfully reach her fundraising goal of $2000!

Thank-you again to all of the business that supported the event by either donating products or their time. It was a fun filled day and a great opportunity for families from Weipa, Napranum, Mapoon and surrounding areas to enjoy with each other.

This event would not have been possible without your support!

In further news the Support Services Team has also been making regular trips out to Mapoon and these have been welcome and appreciated. The connections established in Mapoon have been growing strong, enabling us to link deeper with community. Excess donations to our Op Shop have been further donated to My Pathway in Mapoon who

are using the goods to open their own mini Op Shop. Books have been a major donation recently and we have been very excited to be able to set up mini libraries in both Napranum and Mapoon. The books will all be circulated providing community with literature for both entertainment and learning. This past week, Mary was invited to attend a market day in Napranum. It was a fun day with coconut

DRUMMING TO THE BEAT

The Support Services team has been going ahead with the focus of interacting more with community and of supporting and educating community in building healthy relationships.

A very exciting program to be started next month is DrumBeat!! Mary and Sue have become facilitators in the program and are pumped and ready to get drumming.

DrumBeat is a unique program designed to be fun and interactive, while delivering life skills and healthy messages to participants. It is a flexible program, suitable for use in many different environments. The Support Services Team currently has plans to run the program with young people in the school as well as at the Women’s Group in Napranum.

Social connection is the main focus of the DrumBeat program. Team work and music brings the participants together, connecting them in a way that they may not otherwise be open to. Once this connection has been established participants are open to receive messages to assist them in finding meaning in their own lives and they learn practical skills to strengthen the personal relationships in their own lives.

Special thanks to My Pathway in particular Derek Carter for the donation of the drums needed to get the program up and running.

“DRUMBEAT IS A UNIQUE PROGRAM DESIGNED TO BE FUN AND INTERACTIVE, WHILE DELIVERING LIFE SKILLS AND HEALTHY MESSAGES TO PARTICIPANTS.”

Op shop helps students open channels of communication.Recently, grade twelve students from Western Cape College visited the Op Shop this month to undergo a workshop on communication and appearance. Their teacher, Cicely Baira coordinated the activity and the students gained some fantastic hands on education. It was great to see the Op shop and Community Centre used as a fun and educational resource for the community.

The Community Centre is here to facilitate the educational needs of your students, community group or organisation. Contact us today and see how we can help.

DIAMOND SPONSORSHIP SHINES BRIGHTWe were very excited to receive support and sponsorship from Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa for the 2015 International Women’s Day celebrations.

Their generous sponsorship helped purchase one of a kind pieces from local artists and business in the area, that were auctioned off during the night. Their support helped us raise over $1000 to help go towards improvements and renovations to the Op Shop and Community Centre.

Thank-you again for your generous donation and support it truly is priceless to us and the community.

GOING BLUE FORAUTISMThe community centre has turned blue to join in raising awareness and funds for autism. Pens and wrist bands from Autism Queensland are for sale at the counter, and we’ve decorated the centre blue.

We also have a special rack of blue clothing put aside, and all money raised from the sale of these clothes will be donated directly to the Go Blue for Autism campaign.

When a person has autism, their brain is wired differently to other people, and they may find it difficult to interact socially and communicate with others. Autism Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation with a vision to partner with children, adults and families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder to make positive difference in their lives through choice and opportunity.

All funds raised through the Go Blue for Autism campaign will help Autism Queensland continue to deliver vital state wide Outreach support services to school children diagnosed with ASD.

AutismSpectrumDisorder

The cause of ASD is not fully understood. Although there is no cure, appropriate early interventions, therapy and education delivered by professionals with expertise in ASD can make a significant difference.

Autism Queensland: (07) 3273 0000 or autismqld.com.au

ASD is a complex lifelong developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate, interact with others and cope in everyday situations.

While the symptoms of ASD vary greatly from person to person, the main areas of difficulty are in social awareness and interaction, communication and restricted and repetitive behaviour.

Every person with ASD is different to another and has their own way of seeing the world, which makes them interesting and unique.
