SPONSORS & MAJOR SUPPORTERS - MANLY LSC & MANLY NIPPERSOn behalf of Manly LSC and Manly Nippers thank you for sponsoring us during the 2018/19 season and helping us make a difference in the community. Without sponsors, we would not exist.

Manly LSC is a volunteer organisation but we live in a world where we have expenses, whether it is regulatory, insurances, and equipment for lifesaving, education and OH&S obligations.

Manly Nippers one of the largest youth sporting and community clubs in the State, aims to educate our local youth in Surf Lifesaving and surf safety. This cannot be done without the help of our sponsors and it has been great to have the support of existing long-standing sponsors and to also welcome some new ones this season.

We ask our Members to support the businesses that sponsor Manly Life Saving Club and Manly Nippers to use and promote their services within the community.

We invite our sponsors to continue this positive partnership for the 2019/20 season, and reap the benefits of partnering with either Manly LSC or Manly nippers. We offer a wide variety of Sponsorship Packages that include advertising, social media communications, merchandise branding at Lifesaving and competition events and dedicated Sunday Nipper activities.

This is my second term as President and during this time I have been fortunate to witness zero fatalities on Manly Beach. Thanks to all patrolling members who participate in our invaluable voluntary community service.

This year for the first time in over 25 years there will be one annual report for the club. This personifies the boards overarching one club approach. The success and the proper functioning of our club is as good as its members. The board, the club officers, patrolling members, long service, general and JAC members and others all have an integral role with the clubs success whether saving lives, educating others, competing or whatever they feel makes a difference. Importantly, Manly LSC has the largest membership on the northern beaches, has the most rescues, first aid and preventative actions. The effective organising of all this just doesn’t happen, there is a lot of discussion, planning and doing! For instance the Club Captain provides leadership and support to all 4 vice captains and all 15-patrol captains. Similarly the Director of Education organises and supports all the courses including bronze, IRB, SRC, First aid as well as the proficiencies. Finally the Director of Competition establishes a framework for training, organises coaching and carnival logistics.

To complement our outstanding lifesaving achievements it was great to see our competitors coming 1st overall in the Branch Championships. Great results and effort also at Aussies, with exceptional performances by both boys and girls teams. Pleasingly, there was significant and welcome improvement this year from our girls. Most importantly it was noticed by many other clubs, that our Manly team and supporters were the most lively, enthusiastic and jolly bunch at the carnival, all supporting each other and working together.

There were two monumental events this year organised by a few of our members by their own volition. Both of these events tapped into the internal and broader Manly LSC community and generated enormous goodwill. First was the golf day organised principally by Gary Ballard and Al Lewis that reconnected with previous golfing participants and members and importantly turned out to be a great fundraiser. The second event organised by Billy McMahon and John Hicks reconnected with many past and present members that oversaw the club post 1950’s.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the massive news announced in October last year, when Northern Beaches Council unanimously supported the knock down and rebuilding of our club building. With Federal

PRESIDENT

Government Funding now locked in, we are currently in positive discussions with our local State member James Griffin about suitable grants that will match the Federal Governments $5million. Once the appropriate state funding is in place, the Draft plans will be available towards the end of this year for public viewing and comment. Hopefully if all goes to plan, the rebuild will commence April 2021.

Late in 2018 the club finally received approval to upgrade its liquor license to an On Premises Licence. Simply this means we can run a cash bar, host more public and member functions and therefore generate improved income from our hospitality area.

On the finance side, the good news is that the club remains robust with an excellent net profit for the third consecutive year of above $150k. We now have a substantial visible cash surplus on the balance sheet. The bad news for the balance sheet is that during the rebuild we will need cash both to pay for the internal fit out and also to provide a buffer to pay for ongoing expenditure like administration costs, lifesaving and competition costs. The Treasurer will no doubt elaborate on this, but it’s appropriate to say we need to keep saving.

Finally, thanks to all our sponsors that provided essential funding, goods and services. We rely on you in making make our club a valuable community hub and resource.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President this year. I confirm that I will be nominating again in 2019/20.

Chris Bell

11MLSC ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19

As another season has drawn to an end, it is time for me to reflect on the past year. This year is a particularly sentimental one for me to reflect on, as it will be my last season as a board member with Manly SLSC. After 14 years with the club, I have decided to step down from this position in order to allow me to pursue my studies. I will continue to do the odd patrol next season and will of course frequently grace everyone with my presence as a club member. I am continuously amazed and impressed by the efforts that all of our members make each and every year. Your selfless and tireless contributions are what keep our busy club afloat. From our volunteers to our members, new faces to old faces, you are all truly beautiful people who are a pleasure to work with. I want to sincerely thank you for everything that you do.

DEPUTY PRESIDENT LIFESAVINGAs I close out my final season, I wish to leave you with one last reminder. Be kind to each other. One of the goals of the Manly Life Saving Club is “to provide a safe and caring environment for all members and visitors and a place where they can meet in good fellowship.” From life members to probationary members to visitors, we are all Manly. Look after yourselves and each other, lift each other up and support one another to ensure we keep our club healthy and happy. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting each of you (and for some, teaching!) Thank you for making my final season so memorable. I am looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for the club. Happiness & Sparkles,

Gemma Margiotta

CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT

From the beginning of the season we have had excellent attendance from our members. The new Bronze holders have transitioned well into their respective teams. Thank you, Patrol Captains, for your excellent communications via email, what’s app, Facebook and Instagram and in keeping your crews motivated. The average Patrol member at Manly LSC attends 90% of their assigned hours and donate at least a few hours during a fundraising event like the Cole Classic, Manly Carnival or Nipper Nationals. However, this year we have had record numbers completing 100% Patrols and over 30 members raking up more than 60 hours. This is made more incredible when you see that 5 of the top 20 are on Long Service Leave (and as such, are not obligated to Patrol).

If you have done 10 years “A” grade service (or if you are unsure), please get in touch so that I may put you forward to the Board for consideration. As you can see, it doesn’t mean you have to stop Patrolling, it just gives you more flexibility.

Thank you to the Vice Club Captains Annie Gleason, Jane Pender, Fraser Mctavish & James Keene and gear steward Shane Gilroy. Together they ensure that I am kept up to date with the replacement of radios, equipment, uniform & first aid requirements. They also keep me apprised of the well-being & morale of our members. Without your commitment, my job would be a lot harder. Thank you.

I would like to thank our Patrol sponsors Go Natural who provide those yummy snacks while on the beach and Belle Property Manly for providing our new mini pop up tent that offers extra visibility and sun protection. Thanks Richard’s meats for providing the Christmas ham and to the Hotel Steyne for providing vouchers for Patrol get-togethers and for Patrol member of the month awards.

There has been a real “social” vibe to our Patrols this season and I hope that it will continue to grow. The end of season Lifesaving presentation was held on a Sunday

Page 13: MANLY LIFE SAVING CLUB...Notice is hereby given that the 108th Annual General Meeting of the Manly Life Saving Club Inc. will be held on Sunday 7th July, 2019 commencing at 10am. The

CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT

afternoon and was well attended with Patrol 3 taking out the inaugural Social Patrol (the most in attendance). The celebrations went over the allotted time, which is a good sign of success!

Unfortunately, Max Moon is stepping down from his role as IRB Captain. He has been an excellent source of information and inspiration to all of us. His schedule is too full now he is a NSW Duty Officer as well as a Support Ski operator. Thank you, Max, for all your hard work and I hope you will still come around from time to time. You will be happy to know that the IRB section is going strength to strength with numbers increasing. Scott Freeman has been recruiting successfully and has run several crew and driver courses. With many of the graduates taking up vital roles on their Patrols.

This season has seen many successes on Manly beach; however, we were touched by tragedy with the passing

of our own Mark Ellis. Among all his achievements, Mark was also a proud Patrol Captain of Patrol 2. He was an amazing man with an enormous heart. While recovering from a spinal injury, he never focused on himself. Instead he donated his time to the Invictus Games and to raising funds for those less fortunate then himself. He will be missed, Vale Mark Ellis.

We were also touched by the tragedy of loss of two members from Port Campbell LSC in Victoria. Andy and Ross Powell gave the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to rescue a swimmer in trouble near the 12 Apostles on 21st April. In their name, we shall remember that every day we Patrol, we consciously put our own lives at risk to save others.

MARCH PAST REPORT

As a bunch of nipper parents in season 95/96 having a BBQ in the Club backyard we decided to form a March Past Team to become active at Carnivals rather than just watch. Now 25 seasons later we are still at it with 75% of the original team. Last year we decided to limit our Marches to local Carnivals only. So after some vigorous high altitude training on the Club balcony on Wednesday nights we successfully competed at South Curl Curl, Freshwater and Manly Carnivals. At Manly we were exposed to extremely hot conditions, the sand was so hot the March ended at the third wheel and some members feet were badly burnt.

Finishing in the top 10 at each event was very satisfying and Coach Howard Schauer and chief coordinator Phil Cox were delighted.Tony Vercelli deserves special mention filling in at Freshwater Carnival where he was overheard

commenting that in it was one of the most proudest moments he has experienced in the Club.

Hopefully we can continue to fly the Club Flag locally in the future.

DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

What a year! The 2018/2019 season has seen a lot of action in the Manly LSC Education team. We have welcomed a number of new trainers, as well as a number of probationary trainers, who are on their way to becoming fully qualified trainers. Our members have completed numerous secondary courses and we have run a number of SRC and Bronze Medallion courses welcoming new members to join our ranks as lifesavers at Manly LSC.My predecessor Fraser McTavish worked hard during the prior season to set up a number of incoming probationary trainers, thereby allowing me to get them fully qualified this season. So, a big thank you to Fraser for getting the ball rolling.Education is an essential part of our club and allows us to continue to offer lifesaving services on Manly Beach. From the education of Nippers to new Bronzies, there are a number of different courses on offer to increase all bronze medallion holder’s education throughout their time as a lifesaver. This year we have invested in new equipment to increase our ability to offer better training services to our members; we are looking forward to getting the new projector screens up in both the training room and main hall. For the coming season I strongly recommend every member looks to increase their skills, not only as a way to learn and expand your knowledge, but also to help you meet members from all sections of our club and other clubs on the Northern Beaches. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of Manly LSC’s trainers, assessors and facilitators. Without these people volunteering weeks and weeks of their time, we would not be able to offer the courses that we can, as well as ensuring all member are proficient for lifesaving and competition. This year we are fortunate enough to welcome a number of new trainers to the fold – I would like to extend my congratulations to Steve Garth, Julian Clarkson, Melanie Thomas and Suzanne Brown.Having completed my first year as Director of Education, it has been a quick learning curve. All of which would not be possible without Gemma Margiotta and Tim Cuthbert. A huge thank you to both Tim and Gemma for being such a great support to myself and to our club. I would also like to name Annie Gleason as

a key education team member this year. Annie ensured a huge amount of proficiencies were completed, even after the end dates, thereby donating hours of time every week for a number of months. Everyone in the Education team has been an amazing support. In the coming years, I hope to grow and increase our team, lessening the load on key long term trainers, as well as ensure we have enough trainers to meet the demand for courses. I am looking forward to the coming season, with many plans in place. In particular, we will be changing up the way we run the proficiencies and ensuring that we try and get members through more efficiently and hopefully long prior to December. I also hope to arrange regular courses for our members to ensure that they are able to maintain and increase their knowledge and skills in lifesaving. Upskilling is a key part of our education system and club. Ensuring that there are more qualified members on our beaches means we can share the load around more people, which eases the burden on key individuals. As they say, many hands make light work.

I hope everyone that has a restful Winter period and keeps their fitness training up ready for the proficiencies and the upcoming season. Looking forward to season 2019/2020 in Education and all that it will bring to our great club!

See you on the beach.

DIRECTOR SPECIAL EVENTS

I’ll start with a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped out across our events this year. A job well done – so let’s do it all again, bigger and better next year!Whether your contribution was big or small, we couldn’t have done it without you – you’ve done yourselves proud!

What a great year MLSC has again had across our amazing world class events. This year we stayed on point across three massive weekends as opposed to two in previous years. This meant staying focused for a week longer and also dealing with some added challenges around volunteer numbers and rostering, equipment hire logistics, increased costs and some dilution of competitors and spectators which impacted fundraising opportunities around merchandise sales and barbeques.

I’m pleased to say that in true MLSC spirit, we met these challenges head on. With plenty of support, some well laid plans and a bit of luck, we came out swinging to deliver successful events that were in line with last year’s fundraising contribution to the club.

Our MLSC Open Carnival was an overwhelming success, with the carnival referee declaring it the best carnival ever in all his years. That’s a pretty big call and goes a long way to make all the hard work even more satisfying. It’s also a great scene back up on the club balcony watching all the officials debriefing and telling

stories of the day over some friendly refreshments. The weather once again smiled upon us for The Cole Classic ocean swim…that is until the fog rolled in and our water safety controllers stopped the wave starts temporarily! Luckily the fog lifted, we caught up on the wave starts, and we finished Australia’s second largest ocean swim on time and with many happy competitors.

The MLSC Events for 2019 were …

• SUN 20th January 2019 – NIPPER NATS• SAT 26/27th January 2019– Manly Open & Boat Carnival – 100th Year!!• SUN 3rd FEB – The Cole Classic Ocean Swim

In our great club, especially across our events, we absolutely rely on each other to get the job done and produce the best results. Not only is our reputation on the line, but peoples enjoyment and safety depends upon us. The more people we have involved, the better our planning and execution is and the greater the success we all ultimately enjoy!

Thanks again to those very experienced people in this club that know who they are, without whom we could not run these events.

And…if you’ve been wanting to help out on our events...don’t just think about it, come say g’day ;-)

John Thomson

ANZAC DAY 2019Our ANZAC Day Service was again held on the beach with our friends from Manly Surf Club. The ‘Manly Surf and Life Saving Club‘ was established in 1903; then in 1911 that Club became two entities, the Manly Life Saving Club and the Manly Surf Club. It was a sunny morning and we had a crowd of about 400.Our guest speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Nick Misko from Special Operations Command. Nick graduated from the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1999, and his postings have included 1st Armoured Regiment, 2nd Commando Regiment, Headquarters Forces Command, and Special Operations Command. He has had operational experience in Australia and overseas; including duties in support of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, deployments to Iraq in 2004 and 2005, and three deployments to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2013. Most recently he served in Iraq in 2017, for which he was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service. Nick and his wife Tanya along with their sons Benjamin (10) and Harry (7) live in Seaforth and joined us for the Service. What makes ANZAC Day special at our Clubs is the involvement of our members. I would like to thank all who attended and participated. In particular, Carter Harrison and Kiahni Scott (reading the Prayers of Remembrance); Mr Vaughan Price (playing the Last Post & Rouse); Mr Don Gain (reciting the Ode

of Remembrance); Presidents Chris Bell and Danny Froggatt (laying wreaths); Bob Herring, Rachael Dodwell, Rebecca Crawford, Kendrick Louis and Neil Beachley (reading the names of the fallen); Tony Elmore (New Zealand National Anthem) and Michael Hyde (Australian National Anthem); and Club members especially the Masters (setting and packing up). The ANZAC tradition of our Club also continues with some of our members, or their family currently serving. The Northern Beaches Council ANZAC Service at Manly was held later in the morning. Carter Harrison, Kiahni Scott, and I laid a wreath on behalf of the Manly Life Saving Club. Finally, we should always remember the fundamental purpose of ANZAC Day has been, and should continue to be, to pay homage to our veterans and those who gave their lives - including 37 from Manly Life Saving Club and eight from the Manly Surf Club. In doing so, we ensure a recognition that peace and freedom have always required a sacrifice in the past. Those we honour have given our Clubs, Community and Australia a tradition of courage, selflessness and a fine reputation to follow for the future.

32 MLSC ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19

DEPUTY PRESIDENT COMPETITIONThis report brings an official end to our 2018/19 competition year, and what a year it has been. The competition year encompasses pre-season training, non-traditional SLSA ski, kayak, board, swimming and iron style events throughout winter and the first half of summer then the major focus of the competitor’s switches to the State and Australian titles. At Manly LSC our competition section covers age groups from the U8s thru our open age groups to our master’s competitors (I won’t put and upper age number to paper as I might insult someone). Competition is used as a means to increase the skill level and fitness of our members so MLSC can achieve its AIM of “ensuring Manly Beach is a safe place to swim; to prevent loss of life and to develop and educate our youth” Our Competition section not only involves the athletes but also their siblings, parents and family unit. Without the support of “Family” we would not be able to provide the support to the kids of MLSC. This covers areas such as loading and unloading the trailers, moving craft from one area to another on carnival days, fundraising via BBQs and dinner nights, packing, unpacking and moving tents (especially at the Aussies). A pleasing thing for me over the past few seasons is watching how our members in the U15-U22 age brackets assist and help instruct the younger nippers coming thru the system, they are passing on the skills and confidence to our younger members in the same way that it was passed onto them seasons before.Over the past 20+ years the club has changed direction in providing equipment to certain individuals and directed the funding into the coaching structure so all competitors that come training can benefit. With various incidences over the past 15+ the roles of the coach have taken on a wider responsibility and accountability not only in MLSC eyes but the eyes of SLSA. We are fortunate to have extremely talented and knowledgeable coaches to help our club, so a big thank you to main water coaches Nick Dawe, Alyce Bennett, Mitch Roberts. They have been supported by Cam Coghlan, Kendrick Louis, Lachlan Bruce, Harry Stone, Naomi Scott, Racheal Dodwell. We also have a very talented First aid and Champion Lifesaver section with leadership from Sita Mason and coached by Sita, Chris Curilli, Leoni, Ruby and Lauren Costello.

We are in the process of rebuilding our beach sprinting stocks but it is hard for children coming from the nippers to go to carnivals and wait around for 2-3 races when they could compete in the water and craft events and have a larger program and be involved in more team events. This is a trait that is happening across the whole of Surf Lifesaving. Our beach coaching team headed by Michael Kember and supported by Cooper Robinson have started looking after our nippers and we hope to see improved results and numbers in the ensuing years. This season we were fortunate enough to have Michael be flexible with his time and work with the Opens (u14 and up) either before or after their training sessions and the results were very noticeable at State and Aussies. The comments from other clubs and coaches about the noticeable change in our kid’s beach speeds in transitions and finishes was a pleasing comment for our program, (amazing what 5 run sessions can do). Mike has a different approach to our previous run coaches and the kids really look forward to it. So over to some highlights of the season, we could list pages of highlights but I will only do a few. The Worlds were on in Adelaide towards the end of winter, this is a different format to our traditional carnivals like the Aussies. Clubs were only allowed to have a couple of kids per age group and the 15-19 age group were not allowed to compete up in the Opens so a large number of our competitors decided to not go to Adelaide. We had 2 youth/Open representatives in Naomi Scott (youth U19) and Kendrick Louis in the Opens. Kendrick won the Open International Ironman race to go with the Australian Title he won in 2018 and was an instrumental part of the Open Australian team in individual and team events. Kendrick decided to bypass the inter club events to head home. Naomi was selected to be the Female Captain of the Australian Youth Team and then represented the club in the youth interclub events where she won the U19 Ironwoman, Swim and Ski races and came 2nd in the Board race. Both Naomi and Kendrick achieved fantastic results for themselves and the club. The Ocean 6 /Kelloggs Iron Series saw our athletes venture up and down the east coast of Australia with

DEPUTY PRESIDENT COMPETITIONa large contingent of our U17 age group attending a majority of the rounds. Which put them in good stead for the end of season State and Australian carnivals.Manly LSC was well represented in the Iron Series by Kendrick, Naomi, Jay Furniss and Taylar Puskaric. A pleasing result for the club was our consistent performances in the Taplin events. At the NSW State titles, we had numerous top 6 placings which, to be honest, would take up 2 pages. I would like to make a special mention to out Champion Lifesaving section, this is one of the only events that you have to qualify at state to gain entry to the Aussies. Our results at State were fantastic.

U/15 female Monique Wacher - 4th U/15 male Ed Shelbourne - 6th U/17 female Sarah Murdoch - 5th U/17 male Luca White - 3rd U/19 male Chris Curulli - 1st

Next up was the Australian titles, Our U14s and U15s competed at North Burleigh with solid results from all the kids, the events were live streamed so the Sydney crew did not miss out on watching our kids compete. Next up were the Masters and Champion Lifesaver competition. Chris Curulli came 4th in the U19 Champion Lifesaver Final and was only a few points off a medal. Well done Chris. As predicted the surf and wind increased during the Opens competition on the Wednesday and Thursday and the decision was made to move all the female and u17 male events to Kirra Beach. As our team was competing a two different venues communication had to be good to relay results, I could see a lift in all the team (competitors, parents and support crew) when results came in. A measure of a club is its depth in team events and we went off. We didn’t have a huge team in terms of numbers but we made our presence known, our craft results were very impressive, our ski section in the U17s through to the U19 in both the male and female are very strong and we have a lot of depth in athlete numbers. We also excelled in the Taplin team events in both the male and female areas from the U17s through to the Opens. The last day of competition is dubbed “Finals day” and it seemed like Manly was mentioned in the top 3 in

nearly every second event, our athletes achieved some fantastic results, (these are listed later). A highlight was our Open Men’s Taplin team having an epic battle with Northcliffe which lasted until the sprint up the beach, for the uninitiated the Queensland clubs spend up to a million dollars on their surfs sports program and for a club in NSW to give it to them shows the determination of our athletes and team. Personally, standing on the beach listening to our coaches and fellow athletes crunch through the scenarios with athletes before their respective races brought a big smile to me and emphasises what we have at Manly. A former leading athlete mentioned that Manly is the only club he has seen where there is no ego and the support and camaraderie for each other is the best he has seen in 20 years. MLSC has 4 new Australian Champions they are.

U15 Female Short Board Surfing: Evie CoulterU19 Male Double Ski: Thomas Hughes and Dodge NewtonOpen Male Board Race: Jay Furniss

Before I sign off I would like to mention the work that Glenn Stone does for the club and the competition sections in general, he has towed the trailers up and down and up, and down the east coast of Australia and does all the entries for our kids from the nippers to the seniors, thanks Glenn. A big thank you to Tommy Garrett, Dave “ Mel Gibson” Robinson and Steve Walters for helping with tents, tidying the club, working on the trailers and anything else that need to be done. Thank you to all that help our kids. Well done ManlyGo Sky Blues

35MLSC ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19

DEPUTY PRESIDENT JUNIOR ACTIVITIES & YOUTHThe 2018/2019 season saw myself returning as the Chairperson of Manly Nippers and it was as great fun as my last term in office both personally and from a surf lifesaving perspective. I have to sincerely thank my dedicated Committee members, Age Management Team and parents who have supported me week in week out, throughout the season. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that everything we do is on a volunteer basis and what we achieve in our ‘spare time’ is nothing short of impressive. Considering that we run one of the largest junior lifesaving club in the State (and one of the biggest youth sport organisations on the northern beaches) with an army of volunteers – the team at Manly Nippers prove that magic can be achieved when people come together.

As always our Nipper program at Manly LSC would not be possible without the support of all the volunteers; coaches; committee; age managers and their assistants; water safety; BBQ volunteers; the merchandise team; our Council Lifeguards; other sections of Manly LSC, and of course our Sponsors that ensure we can continue to offer the best surf education and junior sports program in NSW. We thank all our sponsors and Manly Nippers encourages all our Nippers and families to choose/ support and use our sponsors – Channel 7 / 7 News, Harris Farm Markets, airbnb, Bennett, Yoghurtland, whenever possible and to take the time to thank them for their commitment to Manly Nippers.

As normal our nipper season began in June with winter board training and continued right through to the Aussies in April. The annual pre-season training/development camp was once again held in Sawtell and is a highlight of the annual calendar in late September. This year it was attended by over 100 nippers and we were lucky with the weather and everyone was in high spirits. This camp gives us an excellent grounding for the season and our nippers have a chance to bond, make new friends and make lifelong memories. Hard work is balanced with paddling adventures to the island, afternoons on the pool inflatables and the pizza party on the lawn at Sawtell SLSC followed by a nipper only cinema trip. I secretly think our parents have just as much fun as our nippers including ladies lunches and golf trips.

Our 668 nippers achieved their SLSA Surf Education awards this season, teaching them crucial surf skills that will stay with them for life. A group of around 25 U14’s went on to achieve their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) this season and all of them are now assigned to a patrol. Many of these new SRC Nippers are also giving back to the club in the form of water safety and helping the younger nippers learn new board skills on Sunday mornings. It was a real highlight of the season to watch our U14’s put the little ones onto nugget boards and catch a wave to the beach. This achievement was only made possible through our dedicated trainers within the club.

DEPUTY PRESIDENT JUNIOR ACTIVITIES & YOUTHIt’s smiles abound on a Sunday morning with the U6’s and U7’s playing beach games and learning that a mouthful of sand is OK if you can grab a ‘flag’ at the end of it! This year our two Junior Club Captains – Kihani Scott and Carter Harrison, led our nippers and have been great role models for us all throughout the season. Our competition group is in a period of transition and we look into growing across the board once again. SNB continued to split the carnival formats which allow more nippers to compete in both beach and water disciplines. As ever, the weather and surf conditions sometimes presented challenges – occasionally this can be the cruellest and most frustrating of sports – but it’s these challenges that build resilience. Congratulations also to the 2 Manly athletes selected for the SNB Interbranch team. I would like to thank our coaching team for delivering a great program to grow our competition base and also help develop skills across the board. Manly Nippers, unlike some other clubs, is not selective in our training program and everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in.

The team for the NSW State Age Championships at Swansea Belmont was down a few key competitors and we yet again presented a smaller U14s team. The result was not as we would have liked but the point score was close between all clubs. Points came once again from both water and beach arenas with a notable performance from our All Age Board relay team in what was very tuff conditions, especially for the younger members. As I have said, we are rebuilding and developing our foundation to be stronger in all areas for the coming seasons/years.

I wish all our graduating nippers a successful time as cadets of the senior club and can’t wait to see a new bunch of fresh and eager faces on our beach ready to have fun. As a parent, I encourage you to get involved as much as you can – the more you contribute to the running of our great club, the more you will get out of it. Over the last 11 years, I have gone from knowing nothing about the sport, to running Nippers, doing my Bronze, patrolling etc. I am still learning and continue getting something out of the sport. Even if you don’t

like to get your feet wet on a Sunday morning, there are lots of roles such as assisting age managers, helping at the BBQ and managing our social media to get involved with. We need your support to continue the great program we deliver at Manly Nippers.

Once again a huge thank you to the Board of the Manly Lifesaving Club, who support me throughout the year. My personal thanks go to Glenn Stone, our competition manager, who undertakes all of our carnival entries and keeps me aware of deadlines related to competition. Here’s to another safe yet exhilarating season at Manly Nippers. See you all on the beach and GO MANLY!

DIRECTOR OF BEACH SPORTS

After a very successful season last year, Manly LSC’s Lifesaving and Beach Competition Teams once again delivered an impressive season of results in 2018-19. With teams competing across the Beach events, including Champion Lifesaver, First Aid, and Beach Sprinting, Manly was well-represented in Beach Sports at the Branch and State titles this year, accruing significant points towards our overall competition point scores.

Although numbers have decreased across the broader competition, Manly LSC had 6 Champion Lifesaver competitors and 6 First Aid teams competing across all age groups this season. Continuing to strengthen our excellent competition results from previous years, the Lifesaving team brought home 2 Gold medals, 1 Silvers and 2 Bronzes from the State Championships. From these results, we had 2 Champion Lifesaver competitors and 3 First Aid teams qualify for the Australian Championships this season – what a fantastic achievement.

Unfortunately, due to school, university and work commitments, only three of our qualifying competitors attended Aussies this year. Congratulations to Chris Curulli for achieving 4th place in U19

Champion Lifesaver at the Australian Titles. Also big congratulations to Jasmine Costello and Millie Wacher for placing 4th in the U17 First Aid Competition. I also wish to thank Chris Curulli for coaching the Champion Lifesaver competitors this season, and for your commitment to and passion for teaching younger members of Manly LSC. Huge thanks also to Leoni Graham for assisting with the management and coordination of the Lifesaving Competition team.Despite lower participation in Beach Sprinting this season, both at Manly LSC and across the Branch, we had a number of Manly LSC competitors compete in Beach events at Branch to supplement their Water events, which resulted in some excellent points for Manly LSC. Michael Kember also played a key role in providing sprint coaching to the Water Team to assist with racing performance. Thank you again to Michael for all of his hard work this season, and his mentorship in promoting Beach Sprinting amongst junior competitors, so as to increase our numbers in the senior squad in up-coming years.

Go Manly – Bring on another successful season in 2020!

MASTER’S REPORT

I have never been a numbers person, but I thought these were too good not to share them with you: During the season 2018/19, the Masters team had a total of 72 lifesav-ers that patrolled 2,166 hours over the Summer. On top of that, they volunteered over 30,000 hours in club events such as the organisation of Manly Surf Carnival, Cole Clas-sic or Anzac Day and also helped with the merchandise, new plans for the club or with the Nippers every Sunday. Last but not least they trained for more than 7,000 hours and that resulted in over 140 medals across Branch, States and Aussies Championships. Wow…

The great work of Michael Bochner captaining the Masters over the last few years smoothed the path for what it has been one of the most successful seasons in the history of this team. There’re many reasons we achieved this, but two stand out: commitment and fun. Even during the cold Winter mornings, there hasn’t been a day with less than 15 people on the beach ready to go for a paddle, swim or run and, of course, a de-brief coffee before heading to work.

The season started, as usual, with the Coolangatta Gold back in October, where Nick Williams, Joe Badaoui, John

Thomson and Melanie Thomas raced in the Solo Long Course under very hard conditions. The day before Mark Seymour, Andrew Miller, Grant Ellison, Craig Haskins, Hilary Ingle, several teams and myself gave it a crack in the Short Course with a few trophies coming back home.

After our Gold Coast trip, we started preparing for short-er distance events, being the World Championships in Adelaide our first opportunity to showcase the strength of the Masters team. A small crew headed South and we had some top results with medals for Mel Brock, Peter Ingle, Anthony Vieceli (aka Chugga), Kathryn Watts, Matt Gibbs, Mel Thomas, Bec Crawford and myself!

Not bad for a small crew!Next stage was Freshwater Carnival where we supported our neighbour surf club by bringing over 40 competitors to their annual event. We didn’t just win this time, but we did it by over double the points of the second team, Freshwater! This was just an appetizer of what Season we had ahead…

We followed this great result by winning the Branch Championships, again by over 200 points and with over

Page 56: MANLY LIFE SAVING CLUB...Notice is hereby given that the 108th Annual General Meeting of the Manly Life Saving Club Inc. will be held on Sunday 7th July, 2019 commencing at 10am. The

MASTER’S REPORT

40 masters competitors racing that weekend! Palm Beach welcomed us with over 6ft dump waves and the team didn’t only showed they can race in any conditions but cleaned up once again. During one of the races, in fact, we got approached by a competitor from Freshwater and he said half-smiling: ‘This Surf Race looks like a blue-bottles plague!’ referring to the amount of sky-blue caps in the water! The good cushion the Masters provided, allowed for Manly LSC to win the Branch Championships in front of Newport.

We then made our way to Blacksmiths Beach for the NSW State Championships where, once again, the Manly Masters showed that we are one of the top clubs in the country. We came back with a 3rd place, not achieved in many years, just behind Bondi Bathers and Redhead, two clubs with a very long history and support in Masters.

Finally, we wrapped up the Season with Aussies at Broad-beach. The participation was a bit lower than in the other championships, but the results weren’t. We managed to get medals in almost every event. Worth highlighting the medals of Peter Ingle, Stewart McLachlan and Mitch Roberts in their first appearance with the Masters, Melanie

Brock, Anthony Vieceli (aka Chugga), Mel Pelly, Rachael Dodwell, Peter Clark, Matt Gibbs and myself. If that is not impressive enough, I invite you to check who was racing this year at Aussies with the likes of Grant Kenny, Nathan Smith, Kristyl Smith, Guy Andrews, Zane Holmes, Brodie Moir, etc…

2018/19 season was a season to remember for our Masters. They showed their commitment in and out of the water and that is something to be proud of as a club. Hoping this new upcoming season is as successful but most important-ly, we have as much fun as we did last year.

Looking forward to see you with the Masters team in the upcoming season! If you haven’t joined yet and you are interested in doing so, drop us an email!

IRB REPORT

It has been a busy season for the IRB section with 32 new IRB crew men and women and another 8 IRB drivers joining the ranks. Several of these new graduates have already stepped up to be the lead team members on Patrol. This is an exciting time for new and old members as the guard changes.

During the season, 30 IRB Drivers and 68 crew man and women passed their proficiencies. This is an amazing number considering we have 2 people who can assess IRB drivers (Tim Cuthbert and Greg Pooley). Well done gentlemen!

There were many rescues made this season using the IRB and they were instrumental in keeping the Public between the flags. Our Council Lifeguards often called upon the IRB Patrol teams to move surfers out of the buffer zone. From time to time, we have requests from families to scatter ashes of past members and locals. It is an honour and a privilege to provide this service. This season we were able to assist 3 families.

As part of our obligation and agreement with Surf Lifesaving NSW, Manly LSC may assist with 24-hour call outs. This season we received 5 requests for assistance. This included requests to go to the harbour and required the IRB being launched from East Esplanade.

The Cole Classic showed the enormous depth of our IRB contingent with over 14 boats on the water (thank you to our sister Clubs for donating the boats and engines and our own Rhani-Lee Payne for coordinating!). It was an incredible sight to behold as IRBs could be seen from Shelly Beach to Freshwater. This was mirrored during the Nipper Nationals, Manly Boat and Manly Open Carnival.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Max Moon for being an inspirational IRB Captain for the past 2 seasons. Thanks Max, for all you have done and good luck as you move on to bigger things.

NIPPER SUPERINTENDENT

The 2018/19 season was my first as the Manly Nippers Superintendent and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Manly Nippers has the most Nipper members of any club in Australia. Our dedicated volunteers, such as our Age Managers, Assistant Age Managers, Water Safety, Officials, Nippers Committee, Gear Steward, BBQ Crew, Admin and parents that just help out on any given weekend, are what makes Manly Nippers and Manly LSC, such an awesome club to be a part of.

During our season we have 6 days of the week that our kids can be professionally trained, with the 7th day attend-ing our regular Nippers. There are also countless carnivals for the kids to compete in as well, if they choose to do so.

There is no other sport that I can think of that provides the level of professional training and coaching, for value of their membership, than what our club does. It really is a one-stop-shop for our kids sports for half the year. Water Safety...Unfortunately at the end of each season our U14’s move on up to the Opens, and so do our seasoned

water safety (WS) parents. So each year we need to replen-ish our WS personnel with the up and comers. The U9’s this season have done exactly that, and so to did the U10’s.

At carnivals, as well as on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, both age groups have had great numbers with their WS, which will continue to grow I’m sure in the years to come 2019/20 Season...There’s no better way to get up close to the action of our water activities than being part of the WS Crew. Be it on a rescue board, tube, IRB, monitoring the kids from the beach or doing WS shifts at carnivals.

So if you are keen, please get involved by contacting the club and they can let you know when the next Bronze Medallion course is being run.

That’s it from me. I look forward to seeing you all at Winter board training, and our 2019/20 Nippers Season.

NIPPER TREASURER

SURF EDUCATION

The Junior Activity Club of Nippers has had a mixed year. Whilst our membership numbers have remained stable there has been a decrease in competition due to changes to carnivals and less nippers competing.

Our camps run in September at Sawtell and January at Manly continue to grow successfully and have been well received by all attendees.

Our BBQ’s continue to be a large part of our fundraising and are manned by our Nipper Parent volunteers. We continue to monitor our Nipper boards and keep them cleaned and repaired or replace them.

Our Ripper Nipper program is growing and proving popu-lar with our members.

Our financials have improved compared to budget from a net position and we have increased our cash on hand during the year by approximately $53,000. Our net profit

for the year was $22,362.91. Our income was better than budgeted and expenses increased. Nippers continues to run on a self funded basis.

We contributed around $45,000 to the Senior club for administration, insurance, IRB and through levies on our nipper and nipper parent registrations. The generous sponsorship we receive from Harris Farm continues to ben-efit both Nippers and Senior club for BBQ’s during nippers and at some of the larger events run by MLSC.

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who help man the BBQ, do water safety, volunteer as officials and for various roles at the club. Without you Manly Nippers would not be the same!

JUNIOR WATER COACHING

The coaching team was proud of the achievements of all our competitors through out the season. Great improvements from the start of the season to the end of the season. The children put in hours of training and racing and this was reflected in the achievements at branch and state. We had at least one child most water event finals at state and in a couple events we had two or three making the final. Many cases it’s hard to get one athlete into a final from one club but two and three is an amazing achievement. From these finals we had Tia and Ash place 1st and 2nd in the U13s board amazing job girls and in U11s girls Pipi 2nd in the U11s board and Elisha 3rd in the U11s swim. The U13s boys placed 3rd in the board relay and many other teams and individuals placing in the top 6. Unfortunately a few races were cancelled for the remaining board relay teams which we had multiple teams in finals some age groups having one or more.

Finally the most exciting race of state was the All age relay with our U9 Tom one of two to get out and around course before the rest of the U9s got out . Tom set up the race and his team mates continued with this to place second. Thank you for another great season it showed at branch and state the skill level you all have with some challenging surf. As coaches we are proud that not one of you gave up, you continued to try and complete the race which everyone did.

See you on the beach

JUNIOR BEACH COACHING

A great season for Manly Nippers on the beach. Where to start?

I would firstly like to thank Cooper Robinson for stepping into a coaching role this year on the beach and in his first season as a coach, Cooper has done a fantastic job and has shown that the coaching ranks on the beach have a very strong future.

Training this season changed slightly to previous seasons with the focus not only being on gaining great results in all carnivals that the kids competed in, but also to create a greater link between the nippers and the senior club to ensure that there a clear pathway for the beach competitors at the club. In order to do this we held training on a Wednesday afternoon at Manly Oval with two sessions; 1 for the younger age groups, and then one session that was combined with the senior club. It was great to see the kids interacting with the senior members of the club including Nutri-grain ironwomen Noami Scott, and Ocean 6 Board round winner, Harrison Stone. This combined session also showed the nipper water competitors the importance of running training, and this was one of the highlights for me from carnivals seeing so many Manly competitors running so well in transitions and water finishes. Cooper and myself also provided training on a Sunday morning during Nippers so that all age groups had the opportunity to build on skills.

In regards to competition results the beach team excelled at all Northern Beaches beach carnivals with placings in all groups. After the early Queenscliff

carnival the Sydney Northern Beaches Interbranch team was selected and the beach team had one representative in Nina Van Der Reyden (U/13). The beach team competed well at all Northern Beaches carnivals leading into the Branch and the state championships. Congratulations on all athletes who made branch and state finals and to those who placed in the top 6. A full list of results can be viewed later in the report.

Thank you on behalf of myself and Cooper to the committee, age managers, parents and athletes for the support throughout the season and well done to all nippers on a great season.

UNDER 6’S

Congratulations to all the kids, parents and age managers for completing a fantastic season with smiles all round. Our kids learned and developed because of the care and attention provided by each parent on the sand and in the water.

The U6’s had a big season. With almost every Sunday blessed with good weather, there was every opportunity to make the most of things, and we did. With around 120 kids enrolled, we consistently had around 60-80 kids on the sand, bar a handful of holiday weekends or rainy mornings. U6 Nippers was on every weekend of season, even if only 10-20 kids turned up. With a core group of kids who turned up every week without fail, the U6s quickly developed skills and played well, with some future champions in our ranks.

The start of the season began slowly, due to the water temperature and some differing ability levels throughout the group. The first few weeks focused on sand activities: flags, obstacles, sprints, and perhaps one water activity: wades or buckets around the waters edge. In the first few weeks, we also focused on beach and surf education: personal safety, sunscreen, rips, lifeguards, flags, and ecosurf: environmental care and responsibility.

As the season progressed, the water temperature warmed up and the kids gained some confidence, we began to move to two water activities, and two sand activities every week, culminating in the all-favourite tug-o-war before a debrief and dismissal. We focused on technique in flags & relays, and continued with balls, buckets, and getting wet while wading. We also introduced kids to force of waves with the “Beached Whales” activity, which was a wonderful way to overcome fear through teamwork.

A major turning point occurred in the new year, when we introduced the kids to boards. The stars aligned

when the water temperature was comfortable, the air temperature was hot, the kids were gaining confidence, and the waves rolled in slowly with a sandbank stretched out at “waist deep” for quite some distance. This turned out to be a real game changer, with many kids wanting to get right into boards every week and wanting to stay in the water a little longer. We also began to mix in some different activities on the sand, such as bull-rush, distance running & bootcamp style training, and introduced “rocks & waves” to the sandcastle club after flags elimination. We also mixed up sprints with different ways of getting from A to B: crawling, skipping, and tunnelling through legs.

The highlight of the year was, of course, as always, Santa’s visit closely followed by the Bronze Medal awarded to each nipper at the end of the season. U6 parents also volunteered for 2 barbecues, at challenging times of the year to recruit for (Australia Day long weekend, shared with other age groups, and the first weekend back after start of school).

The Facebook group was a good way of communicating and sharing photos, and this year we ran the email distribution list on Mailchimp, which enabled parents to update their details, or involve significant others, keeping messaging clear and easy to read on mobile devices. This turned out to be a successful way of managing a mailing list and content.

On a personal note, I would like to thank all the age managers and parents for pitching in each and every week, especially with pack-up, water safety, and running activities. Seeing all the smiling faces at the end of each session was a rewarding experience which made it all a pleasure to be a part of.

UNDER 7’S

I can truly say the U7 Nippers have made huge progress this year, every child has progressed in their competency and water skills. We made a point of getting the kids out on the boards and in the surf at every opportunity. The U7 age manager/coaching team have witnessed a positive transition where every child has participated in water activities in all conditions and have grown in skills as a result. Most satisfying was seeing those Nippers that overcame their fear of the ocean and now embrace the board and wave activities. All have been taught how to get out through the surf zone (Caveat: to Parent waist deep), ducking under waves, dolphin diving and then returning to the beach.

Next season each child will need to be able to swim 25m and float for 2 min for safety reasons. We do not teach swimming so if your child is one of the few that is a weak swimmer then please get them the coaching and practise to advance their swimming skills over the Winter period.Thank you’s – I owe a lot !

Firstly to the parents that have actively participated every week, got wet and provided safety support to board or wade activities, thank you ! We could not have got the kids in the water without one to one supervision.

Secondly to the BBQ crew, who supported our U7’s BBQ duty and the Club Champs - Karma brownie points to

you! I know many of you backed up for both activities and cannot emphasize the difference your support made in making my role easier and enabled the U7’s to meet our commitments to the club.

Finally a big thank you to the age manager crew of Lee, Andrew, Robin, Lynda, Jules, Evan and Jo, others such as Roland, Penny, Mitch, Andrew etc who have stood in to assist. I know I have missed people that have assisted when we have been down on numbers - so if I have not mentioned you by name - thank you. We are fortunate to have such a great crew of managers and former manager parents to ensure we always have sufficient supervision on the beach. Also - thanks to Annie from the Club for all your support with the board and equipment supplies to support our activities.

Bronze medallionAs our group gets older we need more accredited parents , particularly for water safety. If you are interested in doing the bronze medallion (which is a very rewarding learning programme and very beneficial training as a parent), please email the club regards course times for this year/next year.

We hope to see you back on the beach next season.

UNDER 8’S

We welcomed back over 100 smiling nippers for the under 8s seasons and presented them with some new challenges including water proficiency assessment. With the help of our diligent parents/carers our nippers braved the chilly early season water temps to master their pool swims and flotation and wading assessments.

With the step up to longer swim proficiencies in the 9s next season, our age manager team built up the swimming challenges as the season progressed, in what were some unusually testing summer swell conditions. Annie consistently helped us out with a flotilla of boards and we managed to get out for a paddle most weeks, including some enjoyable education sessions in calmer conditions at Shelly.

On the beach our nippers enjoyed spirited racing in flags and sprints. We have some very talented athletes in this group and regardless of the results, we are very proud of the competitive and sporting dignity in which all our nippers carried themselves. We conducted our first club championships this season and thanks to so many parents for helping run this successfully. A special

thanks to Judy Tier for officiating at the Club Champs and providing guidance to age managers.

Congratulations to the club champ winners Next season our nippers need to be swimming 200m in the pool in under 6 minutes and 150m in the ocean unassisted so please keep up your swimming practice in the off season. Next season we will look forward to our first carnivals and we will need many volunteers for that to run smoothly. More on that closer to the season.

Special thanks to our team of age managers (Rod, Dan, Chris Andrews, Chris Todd, Will, Mark, Charmayne, Bill, Steve, that consistently ran fantastic and enjoyable sessions week to week regardless of the conditions. Our age group is able to participate in winter board training this season and this is a great opportunity for your nipper to finesse their skills under expert guidance from our board trainers. More information to come re winter board training.

UNDER 9’S

It has been a challenging but highly rewarding season for the U9s of 2018/19, with the highlights being:

• A new age manager was required to replace Jarlath McMorrow and it took a few weeks into the nipper season before Greig Nicholson came forward to take on the role. Greig’s appointment was quickly followed by a number of parents offering their support in a number • Key differences between U8s and U9s quickly became apparent such as the swim proficiencies (a challenging exercise for both nippers and age managers which took a long period of time to get everyone over the line and also resulted in some nippers deciding to remain in U8s for the season), option of additional training sessions, increased number of carnivals (including our first State Champs) and a reduction in the number of nippers turning up each Sunday (averaging approx.. 25-30 each week).• The water was challenging for a number of the nippers, both physically and psychologically, but it was rewarding to see a turning point by the end of January for those that participated in winter board training through to the great summer camp and the excellent training program during the school summer holidays.• Whilst our numbers at carnivals were somewhat low, we achieved good success at an individual and team level in many of the carnivals such as Nipper Nats and SNB Branch Championship (Beach and Water). We also attended our first State Champs which was an amazing experience for those participating

• The nippers also increased their educational knowledge of surf lifesaving covering areas such as Personal Safety, Ecosurf, Physical Health & Wellbeing and Personal Safety, Surf Conditions and Hazards, Surf Safety (FLAGS), First Aid, Signs and Signals. Furthermore, it was evident that camaraderie was developing strongly within the team and extremely rewarding to see the nippers starting to assist each other in the water outside of nippers, e.g. picking others up on their boards when one had lost their own board or taking boards back out to those that had come off them in the waves.• 5 U9 parents completed their Bronze at the end of the season which will be a significant addition to water safety for next season.

A massive thanks to the parents that help week in week out on the beach and in the water, assisting with the BBQ, coaches (Susie, Rachel, Michael, Cooper and the others) and all those that provide significant amounts of support & organisation help with carnivals and other activities.

We are already looking forward to the next season to build on our successes and increase our numbers representing Manly LSC at carnivals.

The 2018-19 season was busy, exciting and successful. We welcomed a number of new faces to the group, and it was great to see so many old faces back for another season. All Nippers showed plenty of improvement throughout the year. We had favourable weather and surf most weeks, and it was great to see the kids growing in confidence as the season progressed. At the Beach and Water Carnivals there were some excellent performances and we saw plenty of effort from all competing Nippers. Next year let’s get more of our Nippers to carnivals, they’re plenty of fun and can help create lifelong friendships.

Our Education Programme was a fun affair, in which Nippers learnt about DRSABCD. A favourite was the First Aid session where the kids practised bandaging each other.

A huge thankyou to all our wonderful coaches who helped the kids improve their skills throughout the

season. Mike and Cooper on the beach, and Rachel, Suzie, and Lachy in the water.

We’d also like to extend our thanks to everybody that helped out during the season - without your efforts we wouldn’t have the group we have today!Special thanks to our Age Managers, Officials, Water Safety, and BBQ Helpers, and particularly Jodi, Pete, Paul, Ray, Nick, Nicole, Bec, and Jenni (and many others) – thanks team! Thank you to the JAC for helping make this such an enjoyable season. We’re looking forward to the new challenges and adventures that next season will bring – fibreglass boards, First Aid, March Past, Irons, Board Rescue, Cameron Events, and R+R to name a few !Catch you on the beach!!

This year the U11’s set off on the front foot, the children who attended our first nippers session were just a wonderful group willing to listen, eager to learn and improve their skills on the beach and in the water, and thiscontinued on for the remainder of the season.

We have a very diverse set of skill levels within our group and ensuring that all children are catered for is challenging, due to this we required a lot of water safety and parent assistance to make this happen, the sameparents are there almost every week and we wouldn’t be able to run our sessions without them.

I mentioned to the children who attended on the 2nd last week of the season how wonderful it was to see how far they had come over the years of nippers, we

had many nippers who have struggled to pass their open water swim proficiency in past years and I think this year we had everyone pass 1st time around.

The U11’s represented well at carnivals and we had many nippers signing up to carnivals for the first time, which was great to see. When attending carnivals we also require parent help in the form of officials and water safety, we have some great parents who have become accredited, but we’d still love to see more putting their hands up to help.Thank you to everyone who helped set up and pack away not just from our age group but also from other age groups, I look forward to seeing them all back on the beach ion October.

Wow!! That’s a wrap for our 7th Season. This Season there were a couple less carnivals, which was great actually. Rich Stacker and I were able to spend a bit more time on Manly Beach will all of the kids. So plenty of body surfing, ins and outs on the boards, boards rescues, party waves, sprints and flags. The kids had a ball. And all of this was possible with the awesome U12’s volunteers behind our age group.

And in saying that, I would like to thank all those parents that helped out throughout our 7th Season. From Water Safety, BBQ, Officiating, Managing kids at carnivals, setting & packing up tents, and just being helpful on any given Sunday. Your help each week is really appreciated.

Firstly a massive thank you to Richard Stacker for managing the U12 boys, as well as all the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Once the dust settles mate I’m sure we’ll be ready to manage the kids in the 8th season as they come in as U13’s

The list of names below, some of which aren’t directly involved with just the U12’s, I would like to thank you all for making our group such a special one. Another season has come to an end and for this group. The end of this season sees the end of short boards, and the end of being in the nipper water training sessions, instead they will be transitioning to the Mals and joining the senior training sessions which will see them training alongside some of their current nipper coaches. Watch out coaches the new Under 14’s are coming for you!!!

This season we have welcomed some new kids the group. It has been a pleasure to watch the growth of these kids from the start of the season to the end. As well as this we welcomed back many faces that have been part of this group for years and years and keep coming back for more.

In the off season many of these kids will begin their Surf Rescue Certificate Training. Once passed these kids will begin to patrol our Beach and play an active role in keeping Manly Beach safe for all. We believe this group of kids will take this in their stride and become a great bunch of dedicated lifesavers and will wear the red and yellow with pride.

This group of kids have always been a successful group at carnivals. This season was no different. At the beginning of the season Nina van der Reyden and Ashleigh Windsham were selected to represent the Sydney Northern Beaches in the Interbranch team, where they competed at Black head against the best from each Branch. The girls competed really well at the championships and were great representatives for Manly Nippers.

Branch and State were once again a highlight of the season, with many medals and points from both the boys and girls. The top results at the State Championships was Tia Emmott-Bennett and Ashleigh Windsham taking Gold and Silver in the Board Final, while on the beach Nina van der Reyden was also fantastic in the flags picking up the Silver Medal in a very close final run, while in the boys the Board Relay team of Harry Underhill, Duncan Cowan, and Miller Manson displayed great surf skills in trick surf to claim the Bronze medal.

We would also like to acknowledge the amazing Under 12’s who made the step up to our age group so our girls could compete in the Surf Team event. Zahra Taylor swam an amazing couple of races to help the Under 13’s through to the final. For the final, Ava Garrett joined Zahra to swim in this team that was now 50% of Under 12’s. The girls were simply awesome, swimming an age group up and walking away with a fourth place at the state championships.

Finally thank you to all the Parents, and Siblings that have assisted throughout the season, whether it was for Water Safety, BBQ duty, Officiating, tent set up or all the above… THANKYOU!!

Looking forward to seeing you all back in the Under 14’s for the2019/20 season.GO MANLY!!

UNDER 14’S

What a year! The mighty U14s swelled in ranks with new recruits and a new age manager.

We welcomed back Sam Merry and Jack Agnew from a hiatus from nippers. We also had some new recruits in Soli Dunn, Luca Ravic and Hunter Fallins. Having these gentlemen join our ranks was due to the hard work of Catherine and Matt Curll. Speaking of Matt, we were lucky to have him come on board as an age manager. Together with Brucie, he kept our U14s so motivated that they were often seen training prior to nippers at 7:30am. Anyone that has a teenager in the house knows that is no small feat!

We may have fielded our smallest teams in competition, but those that went along had a great time and enjoyed each other’s successes. Sprinters, board riders, iron women and men and R&R specialists all represented Manly LSC. Each one had their own goals, worked hard through the season and even though not every result went their way, they were never disappointed. Our Junior Club Captains Carter Harrison and Kiahni

Scott have also done an excellent job. Their ability to understand their audience is most notable when you compare their comedic timing at the Manly State Championship Dinner held in Swansea and the respectful way they held themselves at Anzac Ceremonies, both at the Club and at the Manly Cenotaph.

Speaking of maturity, it has been a pleasure to hear from the coaching staff that our U14s have been actively participating in water safety for the younger members. Coaches and parents have commented on the level of care shown and their encouraging natures. It seems we have raised well rounded teenagers. As you know, those teenagers now have their Surf Rescue Certificate. This award is an important milestone in a lifesaver’s volunteering career. It enables them to join a Patrol, wear the red and yellow and patrol the beach. They have all transitioned into this role seamlessly. The Club is very fortunate to have such great representation. While your nipper says goodbye to the Junior part

of our Club, many have already been welcomed into the Senior ranks. Once they achieve their Bronze Medallion, there are many opportunities they have access to. These include more of what they have been doing (sprints, flags, swimming and boarding) and some new ones too (IRB racing, Surf boats, skis and Lifesaver events). However, as you know, it’s not just about competing. They can start on the leadership path within the Club as a Junior Vice Patrol Captain or become a trainer.

We have had such a blast over the past 9 years with so many great memories. I hope that your nippers have enjoyed the journey to become confident watermen and women. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution during that time and to again congratulate you on developing such mature and wonderful role models.

SAVERS RUGBYIn some ways we could have lifted and pasted the review from the 2017 season in this place - the history books will show largely the same outcome, but that would be doing an injustice to the dozens of people who poured their hearts into what was another successful campaign.

The 2018 season started with a curveball, Suburban Rugby asking Savers to step up to Division 5 as it struggled to find teams for the competition. This meant playing against clubs which regularly fielded two teams, and the associated jump in resources associated with that.

Savers elected not to stretch our limited resources to breaking point by trying to put a second team out each week, and instead focus on putting out a solid squad for each round of the first team games.

It looked as if it would be a step too far initially, with a couple of early losses against unfamiliar opponents, however Savers soon found a new style of play - based on miserly defence and starving the opposition of territory, which brought them success.

That is not to say the team did not play some open and expansive rugby, they scored some of the best tries in the competition with glorious counter-attacking rugby, and put 100 points on one opponent - the first time this has been done in many years.

By the end of the regular season campaign the team had climbed to fourth in the table and secured a Finals berth, the fifth year in succession the side has done this.A tense preliminary final against a spirited Lane Cove team saw Savers hold on in a tight match, claiming an 11-3 victory.

Ahead lay a tough away trip to a huge and very physical Merrylands side in the semi final. The worst possible start saw the side go 12-0 down inside the first ten minutes, before some stirring words (sent via a water carrier) to the team galvanised a collective effort Led by captain Darren Hawkins who posted four tries, the team responded to take the initiative and set up another Grand Final appearance.

After a loss the previous year the team was keen to void a large build up, keeping things more low-key. And the strategy appeared to have worked, with the team competitive against a much larger and even more physical Menai side. However, some lapses of discipline on a cold and very windy day, coupled with some disputed refereeing decisions, saw Savers go down 38-26.

Off the field things went from strength to strength, led by coach Ronnie Westdorp and indefatigable club President Johnny ‘Fridge’ Szaka, the team continued to build on support both on the touchline and through sponsors, with well-attended social events a highlight for many.

The club’s highlight came when matriarch, Jan Tricker, won the highly coveted Peter Kelly Medal for Service to Rugby. This highly revered accolade comes after decades of tireless service to not only Manly Savers but to the greater rugby community. The Manly Daily dubbed Jan “The Mother Teresa of Rugby”, a title well deserved.

A big thanks to Eagna, Dad & Daves Brewing, Metle, UltreTune and of course Hotel Steyne. For 2019 the team is competing again in the Meldrum Cup, and has introduced new individual shirt sponsorships to help augment community support. It promises to be another competitive season, with the aim to go one better third time lucky.

TREASURER REPORT

The financial performance of our club in 2019 was satisfactory, with positive momentum in several areas and headwinds in key operating areas of our activities. Our reported operating surplus of $146,441 was 8% down on last year’s $160,245. Looking at the core MLSC operating surplus if we adjust for the loss incurred by Manly Savers of $3,051 and also an long overdue inventory write off of $7,954 (attributable to finally implementing a robust inventory management and stock take process in merchandise and the bar) the operating result was actually $157,446 vs last years $156,802 (adjusting for a positive Savers contribution of $3,443 in 2018). However, in my mind the more accurate metric to look at is the operating cash flow which was actually up 7% on last year at $185,224 (vs $176,108 in 2018). After capital investment we added $123,394 to our cash balance.

Revenue and fundraising income was $1,073,094 (down 3% on last year) we reduced expenses by 2% on last year $931,195. For an volunteer organization of this size, the efforts and input of a wide range of people (Board, Finance Committee, JAC, Merchandise Committee and Competition Manager) are critical to manage the complexity of our operations. Thank you to all the people who make a contribution to the generation of revenue and also to those who ensure that we spend our funds prudently. The support of our administration and finance team: Virginia Bennett, Kelly Windsham, Rob Eades, Leanne O’Neill, and our Deputy Treasurers Barry Seymour and Simon Gillespie are invaluable ensuring the smooth governance and management of the operations of our club.

Jim Hudson, Shane Gilroy, Matt Davies and Tom Garrett also deserve recognition for the significant contribution they make to the upkeep of our club premises. Their generosity of time and resource is greatly appreciated. Our strong cash generation equipped us to again invest over $61,000 in new assets including critical lifesaving equipment (patrol and training radios, a new IRB and engine, and rescue boards). Particular thanks to Andrean Duffy who was instrumental in securing a $25,000 State Government grant which funded much of this expenditure. We also invested in a new competition trailer, and updated our gymnasium equipment. We also incurred legal fees of over $6,000 in relation to the upgrade of our liqour licence which was granted in November. As noted last year, this process was far from straight forward, but it now sets us up to appropriately operate into the future.

At last year’s AGM, we raised an ambitious plan to knock down and rebuild our out of date and inadequate club premises. As a reminder, the Northern Beaches Council (“NBC”) owns our club premises. Hence our collaboration with the NBC from the outset has been the right strategy. Mayor Michael Regan and Councilor Candy Bingham have driven the project to unanimous approval by the NBC and there has been significant resources deployed to drive the project forward. Our strategy of seeking direct funding from the Federal and State Governments has also paid off. The first tranche of funds was secured in the 2019 Federal Budget via a $5 million infrastructure grant sponsored by former Member for Warringah Tony Abbott. We are highly confident of similar funding commitments from the State and NBC. State Member for Manly James

Griffin has worked hard to support the project to date and we are well positioned. New Federal Member Zali Steggal is also an enthusiastic supporter of the project. NBC CEO Ray Brownlee is a breath of fresh air to all Surf Life Saving Clubs in our Branch as he actively works to support us. His enthusiasm for a new Manly Life Saving Club is a key driver of the project. What is obvious is that there are several significant financial issues that we need to address as this project progresses to construction phase. Firstly, during the period of rebuild our operations will be materially impacted and as such valuable revenue will be forgone. Secondly, we will need to fund specific plant and equipment and fitout costs, for example a new racking system for skis and boards. We will continue to seek outside funding to meet some of these costs, but ultimately the club will need to have sufficient cash reserves to fund club operations and to meet these capital obligations. Our starting point is a healthy cash balance of over $537,217 (net of Savers bank funds). The Board and Finance Committee will develop a plan to ensure maximization of our cash build over the period until the project commences. Put simply, we need to tighten our belts on spending and to work hard to maximise our revenue generating opportunities. There is allot of work to be done and frankly significant opportunity exists to deliver a much stronger cash reserve over the coming years. We will keep all members updated as we progress our plans. Now to review the operating and financial performance in some detail. Subscription/Membership including Bronze Medallion course fees was down on last year at $208,518

($215,016). Nipper membership revenue was down 12% on 2018. As noted last year, the decline in membership across surf lifesaving clubs remains an issue. One clear bottleneck in attracting new members the availability of Bronze Medallion courses and there is much work to make these courses more available and more user friendly in this time poor world. Retention and new member recruitment will no doubt be made easier when we have a new club facility. Merchandise revenue was flat on last year at $245,667 which was below our expectations. The considerable work done by the Merchandise Committee (Karine Stehmann- Jones, Craig Hood, Kriss Carpenter and Camille de Camejane) to build on the success of the past 2 years growth remains a work in progress. The undoubted potential of this business remains, but a choppy retail environment, weather in the first half (remember we are a pop up!) and the impact of the Manly Carnival weekend being split into two vs last year all impacted. Our gross margin improved slightly to 42%, however our net operating result was down 10% to $61,645. This result primarily reflected higher selling expenses as we staffed the shop during the week. We took the opportunity to write off $6,345 of inventory with an average age of over 3 years. It goes without saying that the Committee go above and beyond in their efforts so we owe then significant thanks. Pleasingly we continue to see so many of our junior members getting their first taste of paid work in the merch tent! Hospitality again was a disappointing result. Our ability to operate was severely impacted as we waited until November for our new liquor licence to be approved. The net operating result of $39,718 was slightly up 6% on last year. Bar sales were down 31% on last year at a very disappointing $46,104. Hall hire remained broadly

flat on last year as bookings remained reasonable, but the impact of uncertainty made it difficult to monetize functions. Tour groups were a bright spot and the efforts of Virginia Bennett and her band of volunteers is greatly appreciated. In recent months , there has been some fresh thinking and focus to the bar operations with changes to suppliers, tighter inventory control and plans for more club events. There is material upside from our hall hire, functions and bar operations, and pleasingly we are now moving forward. The Golf Day was reinitiated by the amazing duo of Gary Ballard and Al Lewis and it proved to be great success. In no small measure to the after round function the event contributed an amazing $18,000 to our bottom line! Events are a major focus of our season and also a major contributor to our bottom line. Pleasingly a net contribution of $64,755 was delivered which was up 6% on last year. This is a great result given the splitting of dates between the Manly Carnival and Nipper Nats to separate weekends which impacted competitor numbers and required duplication of a number of infrastructure and equipment costs. The efficiency of delivery of carnivals and events has drawn high praise from SLSA and also from the owners of the Cole Classic (Fairfax Events). John Thompson’s enthusiasm and the fabulous contribution of many volunteers delivered brilliant events and a great financial result for the club. Two people who require particular mention are Robyn Manson and Beth MacDonald who both came out of “retirement” to drive the BBQ’s on event days, a massive effort! A significant opportunity presents itself as the future of the Cole Classic may now lie in the hands of the Club. This has the potential to provide us with a meaningful opportunity to run our own swim event and drive a materially higher financial result.

You will note on a perusal of the financial statements that we increased our expenditure on competition this year by 20% to $170,760. Manly maintains a strong reputation as a leading competitive club and a deliberate decision was made to devote more coaching and mentoring resource to our female competitors. Administration expenses also increased 24% during the year to $97,489. Half of this increase is attributable to our audit, finance and administration costs which are essential operating costs and go hand in hand with strengthened management and governance as prescribed by last years audit by BJD Partners. I would like to thank the members of the Finance Committee for their insight and assistance, Peter Roberts, Adrian Jones, Brett Riddington, Tim Cuthbert, Chris Bell and Daniel Mulcahy. When reflecting on 2019 we faced challenges in revenue generation against our forecasts across a number of areas of the club, but we were able to keep a lid on costs to deliver a solid result. We delivered cash to the bank and we improved and maintained our equipment in a prudent manner. There remains much to be done to drive efficiency in our financial and operating performance. We need a laser focus to maximise our opportunities to generate revenue from merchandise and hospitality and to ensure that we spend our funds wisely. A new club premises is a reality in the not too distant future and that is a game changer. I commend the financial results to the members of Manly Life Saving Club.
