Feast of sport? Much like the festival of the boot or maybe the battle of the boat or the shimmy of the swimmer or the pantomime of the budgie smuggler. Either way, the last 2 weeks of the State Open Championship and Club Championship was a collage of sublime competition, where champions emerge in their own right, to fix a place on the podium. Underscoring all this there was the obligatory level of tension, excitement, surprise, lament and maybe contentment that all the training and preparation paid off. The next stage is the Australian Championships which are just around the corner so I guess we must wish our small team of hombres the best of luck on the big stage.
March has been a mad month with a busy 4 weeks for the entire club. We now move into the slower months and with that the club will not be so active during the week. It’s now time to reflect on the season past and recognize those who made a significant contribution to the club. The annual club awards of excellence and the SLSWA awards are our next big outing, albeit this time with the shirt and tie and fancy dress. Watch out for the dates.
To our new members, I hope you had a great year, made some new friends and stuck your hand up to help this club surge
into the future. Of course the crusty older members are signing off for another year. Stashing the uniforms away and peering down the tube because it’s footy season. The red and yellow army did their job and did it very well and with that, Barbara Carter – Thank you so much for your years as a Patrol Captain. How many fantastic lifesavers have benefited from your leadership while on patrol? Splendid job!
In the words of some fat bloke who loved to smoke cigars and drink Brandy;
‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.’
Winston Churchill
Take care

JUNIORS
Well it’s certainly a lot cooler and autumn is well and truly here as many of you will be transitioning to a winter sports program. Thank you to all the kids and families who attended the end of season Junior presentations and stayed behind in the lounge afterwards. It was 10 o’clock when the doors were finally closed on the evening’s ceremony. Fantastic support!!! And thanks to Bridie Rosich who was unexpectedly called upon to provide bar service, putting her newly acquired bar serving skills to the test, passing with flying colours and an unwavering smile. Big congratulations to all the award recipients a list of which can be found in this newsletter. Everybody walked away with something in recognition of the effort the kids have put in over the season.
So what happens next?
With activity on the beach taking on a slower pace, work around the club continues on. On the housekeeping front the junior equipment shed will be cleaned out, boards put back in order and a full stock take of equipment will be undertaken. If you still have a club board in your possession you need to return it to the shed on Saturday morning at the latest.
The Junior Portfolio cannot operate without the contribution and knowledge of those that are part of the team. Planning sessions will be undertaken with the AGM’s and AGMA’s over the next couple of months. Part of the process will be looking at what we achieved over the season, how it was implemented and what we can do to improve the services we deliver on club days in the future. The aim is that we can make your child’s experience even more enriching.
For the kids socially, the plan is to organise off season social events. This is an opportunity for those of you less inclined to get wet but want to make a contribution as a volunteer to assist. I need you to come on board and help with the planning.
From Saturday 18th April, weekly mal board training for
beginners and developing paddlers will commence at Mullaloo Beach (weather/conditions permitting). These sessions are also open to the U13’s transitioning to U14’s next season. This is a developmental opportunity which will enable these kids to acquire technical knowledge whilst familiarising themselves with handling a larger craft before the new season commences. Thank you to Edgar Coello for stepping forward and volunteering to coach this group. Without Edgar these sessions would not be possible.
The SunSmart Pool Rescue Series will commence in May and is open to U11-U14. We want to encourage as many of our juniors to come along and participate in the series. Not only do the kids get to hang out with their friends, the competition provides a great opportunity to gain pool rescue skills in a fun, safe and warm environment (yes it’s indoors!!!). Information can be found on www.mybeach.com.au. A full program of events for the 2015/16 season is yet to be released.
Movements and happenings....I want to say a very big thank you to the AGM’s who will not be returning next season. To Matt Quinn U11 Boys, Andrew Compson U12 boys and Jo Bulley U12 Girls. These guys over a number of years have sacrificed the opportunity for a Sunday morning lie in, a big brekkie and time with their families to take on the enormous task and responsibility of educating our nippers – your children. The club is truly grateful to them for stepping up to the challenge, often in the absence of others volunteering. I hope these guys will not become strangers on Sunday mornings and continue to be a presence on our beaches...... Welcome aboard Steve Lee (U11 Boys), Simon Gidley(U12 Boys) and Myles Laing(U12 Girls) who will continue the Surf Life Saving journey with these kids next season and beyond!!
Also a big thank you to all the AGMA’s who turned up every week and going the extra mile even attending the carnivals. We look forward to having you come back next season. You are valuable assets the club and the kids love having you on board!
Finally I am grateful for the continuing support of all our volunteers and look forward to your continued support.
‘Some of the richest people in the world are not millionaires, they are volunteers.’
See you on the beach!

SURF SPORTS
Senior State Championships 21-22 March @ ScarboroWhat a fantastic Senior State Championship campaign we had!!
Starting last year in June with the IRB State Champs, then in July with the Pool Rescue States, August had the Short Board Riding States. Then to this year in March with Belt Racing States, Champion Lifesaver States and the weekend, all those points tallied have Mullaloo finishing 3rd overall with a total of 737 points (Trigg 996, City of Perth 869.5).
The Mullaloo Team collected 22 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze medals over the states weekend. That has now added to a final tally with all state championship events combined – 41 gold, 32 silver and 27 bronze medals – GO MULLAZ!
On the weekend 21-22 March, we fielded 109 competitors, competed in over 100 different events, had over 30 people team manage, provide water safety, officiate and set up and were expertly guided by 22 coaches to get there!
Some fantastic results all round and Mullaloo winning the opening event of Lifesaver Relay first up had us all fired up for some great competition.
L to r: Maxine Singh (runner), Brett Gould (ski), Steve Hilyear (surf boat), Wes Gould (board), Stuart Clarke, Rob Szewzcak (Surf boat), Ben Jones (swimmer), Patrick Squire (surf boat), also surf boat swept by Tim McFarlane.
This year Mullaloo has won the 2015 Cadet Cup (previously won in 2009). This is presented to the Club with the highest point score calculated from Under 15 and Under 17 age events at the WA State Surf Life Saving Championships. Well done to all our cadets including those that competed up an age group from u14s. This is a great result and showing some depth in our competitor base.
A great contingent of open competitors allowed us to field all events with many team events having more than one team! It’s tough competition all round and open division is certainly up there. Just a few highlights from opens – Open male Taplin Relay, a fantastic effort with each leg closing the gap before to come home with a bronze – Nic de Bomford, Wes Gould, Brett Gould, Ben Jones, Dave Wood and Sam Wood. The Open ladies ski relay, what a race – Silver with
Laura Edmunds, Mandy Lee and Lisa West. Open female surf boat crew Wahoo – Kirstie Briggs, Simone Fountain, Rachel Greene, Claire Whitelaw swept by Tim McFarlane, catching a wave to finish on the line with silver – yes, that’s surf!!
L to R: Mandy Lee, Laura Edmunds, Lisa West
Above: Open women surf boat crew – Wahoo
Our youth were also up for open competition with Jake Smith U17 getting a bronze in the open male surf race. Wes Gould U17 just missing a medal coming in 4th in the premier Open Ironman event, magic!
Above: Wes Gould
We had ten U19 competitors, 5 in surf, 1 on the beach and 4 in surf boats a great effort with all medalling in more than 1 event and all males!

Some outstanding efforts over the 2014/15 season with some phenomenal medal tallies highlighted here:
Wes Gould (U17): 15 gold, 9 silver, 5 bronze
Jake Smith (U17): 15 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze
Brett Gould (U19): 12 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze

A HUGE THANK YOU to all:
Team Managers. It was a big job – Simone Pastor (beach), Katrina West & Jenni Wood (Females), Jeff Baker & Gayle Gould (males), Leticia Anthony & Jaime Roberts (U15s), Maureen Donnelly (surf boats).
Officials – Alison Gerrard, Andy Jones (also for coordinating the officials), Dawn Jones, Terry Upston, Cathy Park, Chris Hainsworth, Anne-Marie Widermanski, John Hillen, Maren Scriven.
Water Safety – Mark Hills (ESO), Josh Bull, Mary Bubryzcki, Chris Hainsworth, Rick Hawke, Ashlyn Bulley.
Set up and pack up crew – Glenn Taylor, Russell Gould, Andy Jones, Gayle Gould, Carlo Tenaglia, Geoff Rosich.
Ski adjusters – Glen Taylor Rob West.
All supporters, handlers, cheer squad and fill-ins for anything else needed doing – thank you for a great weekend!
Senior Club Championship and Trophy Presentation, Sunday 29 MarchWhat a perfect morning for the finale of the season for the seniors. Hitting it off with a sprightly 2km run (1km for masters), then surf race, board race, ski race, ironman challenge, sprints and finishing it off with flags!
Well “yes Mandy, if you run another 1km why don’t you compete in Opens”, great effort from a great athlete! Jason Snell – light on his feet, for good reason a true trooper competing with an injury but looking after it! The U15 males coming in strong all neck and neck in some of the events. Our biggest – and most competitive… contingent were the open females – awesome effort ladies!!
Finally, what better way to cap of the season than with a sausage sizzle up in the comfort of our great Club Lounge!
Big thank you to Andy and Dawn Jones for running the event, Tracey Tenaglia for recording, Uppy and Chris for water safety, Hillsy for our risk free and safe event, Willie Brosens for cookin’ up and organising the sausage sizzle and big thank you to the beach set up crew for having the whole beach ready for us!!

COLLECTING FOR THE BALI NIPPERS PROGRAM
Do you have surf gear that your child no longer uses, like goggles, bathers, rash vests or old club shirts?
Every year a group of our Trainers and Assessors head off to Bali to train the local surf clubs and we take donated equipment to help out. Over the last few years their Nipper programs has steadily increased and they are desperate for gear.
If your child no longer has any use for their equipment or has outgrown it we would dearly love it!! I will be collecting on the following dates or there will be a collection bin available.
If you have items that you would like to donate but these dates and times don’t suit please contact me directly on 0407479760. Lucy Cleary

EDUCATION
Trainers and AssessorsThe majority of Trainee Trainers have now completed their Training Logbooks. The Probationary Assessors have also completed their Logbooks. This documentation is with SLSWA who are yet to complete the processing and issuing of the awards. Thank you to all involved for their commitment to the club and its members.
First AidThe next First Aid course will be run at Mullaloo in May. It will be run over three sessions (for new First Aiders) and one session (for those refreshing their award). Participants need to attend all sessions. You will need to register your interest with the club office by Friday 24 April so we can make a final decision on whether the course will go ahead. Course arrangements will be as follows:
Session 1 – Monday 4 May from 7pm to 10pm – new First Aiders only
Session 2 – Thursday 7 May from 7pm to 10pm – new First Aiders only
Session 3 – Saturday 9 May from 7am to 2pm – both new and renewing First Aiders
The course will be co-facilitated by Bernie Flint and Anne-Marie Widermanski. Any other suitably qualified or interested members are invited to join the training team.
Members interested in assisting with the delivery of First Aid training for members need to hold the award, need to complete a Training Officer Logbook as part of the process of assisting with a course. Members interested in being involved with delivery of the First Aid course on a commercial basis need to hold the full Certificate IV TAE. Please let Rachael know if either of these apply to you.
Bronze Medallion (BM) and Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)The planned training for the current season has now been completed. Members wishing to gain their BM or SRC should register their interest with the club office. This will assist the Education team in the planning and scheduling of courses for the coming season.
Members wishing to gain the associated Training Officer (TO) or Assessor (ASS) qualification should contact Rachael via [email protected] as soon as possible, stating your preference for course/s and date/s of commencement.
Existing Trainers wishing to confirm their commitment to be involved in the coming season are invited to get in touch with Rachael asap Assignment of trainers to groups will be determined by the Education team and preference for group assignment will be given to trainers who have made a regular commitment in the past.
Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)Members wishing to compete outside Western Australia need to ensure they complete the upgrade to Certificate II without delay. The RPL Workbook is available from the club office. One of the key requirements is to have eight (8) hours of logged patrol duty as well as have a Patrol Captain complete the sign off in the workbook. Contact a member of the Education team for information or assistance. There are a number of checks that have to be made, and processing by SLSWA takes time, so allow for this!
Annual Skills Maintenance (Proficiency) programThe formal club proficiency/skills maintenance program is behind us – however there appear to be a number of people who have not yet renewed their proficiency! It is not too late to renew your qualifications. If this applies to you – please contact the Education team via [email protected] as soon as possible and all efforts will be made to assist you as soon as is practical, given we are fast approaching the business end of the season for both patrolling and competition. Note that any patrol hours cannot be credited to any members whose proficiency expired on 31 December 2014.
A number of members have yet to complete workbooks or other requirements to ensure their awards can be updated. Reminder e-mails were sent in 2014. If this applies to you – please make sure you attend to this without delay – as the longer you wait, the more complicated the process becomes – and the more work you will have to do as a consequence!!!!
If you are unsure – please log in to the Member Portal and check.
Spinal ManagementAnnual skills maintenance for Spinal Management will be fully incorporated into the annual proficiency program next season. The Education Team will include Spinal Management courses for members wishing to gain this award. Spinal Management award criteria will also be included in all Bronze Medallion courses from next season – so members will gain two awards on successful completion.
Finally…..Planning is well under way for running award programs for the next year. All members should watch the newsletters, as well as read the e-mails sent by the club, to make sure they know the dates. Make sure you meet the prerequisites before enrolling in any course, and register your interest with the club office. Planning for the Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate courses for the next season has

commenced. The Education team will review and finalise these in the near future.
It is important you register your interest to do any award/s with the office asap, so we can gauge the level of interest and finalise dates and arrangements as required. Depending on the availability of Trainers as well as facilities and equipment, we can do our best to run as many courses as required. Note there are minimum numbers required to make a course viable – and to make good use of the availability and time commitment required of our Trainers.
Are my awards up to date?Don’t forget to check your membership details, awards and patrol hours online. It is expected that members will regularly monitor their own records and take appropriate steps in good time to ensure the records are current, and awards remain up to date. Go to the Mullaloo SLSC website and follow the prompts.
