MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 3

This year the General Managers and Managers voted

Alistair Cook to be our Club Person of the Year. In any given season, being General Manager of Support Services would be busy. However, in the GMs role this season, Alistair managed the team as they confronted the challenge of decommissioning the upstairs facilities, temporarily delivering the office functions off site and then moving into the newly refurbished Club. Alistair went above and beyond to ensure the IT systems and facilities were operational.

Alistair not only lead the Support Services portfolio and technology upgrades, but has been active across many areas of the Club. Alistair has been a member of the IRB Leadership Group, officiated at every local IRB carnival last season and provided support to the IRB racing team

throughout the season including accompanying them to the National titles in Mollymook. Alistair also actively contributed to the education area of our Club, assisting with Bronze training and leading IRB training and assessing.

In the life saving area, Alistair was accepted to attend the first SLSWA Advanced Lifesaving Camp in Yallingup and completed the Silver Medallion – Beach Management award, subsequently becoming a Vice-Captain for patrol. All this while being an active patrolling member, delivering 63 hours of patrol/water safety including event water safety and abalone patrol. Alistair even made time to compete, putting his hand up to be part of an Open Rescue & Resuscitation team, achieving a Bronze medal for the Club in the State Championships.

This year’s President’s Award went to Natalie Godwin. ‘Nat’ as she’s affectionately known, contributed a power of work across many areas of the Club. She assisted with training of Bronze groups, assisted with setup and pack up of events, provided IRB racing support and was always there to assist with the creation and delivery of Club functions and fundraising activities. Nat was an age Group Manager and an active patrolling member – volunteering over 130 patrol/water safety hours, including

abalone patrol. Nat provided first aid at events and has recently taken on the First Aid Officer role.

The other reason Nat was awarded the President’s Award was her infectious disposition. Nat is an enthusiastic, can do, ‘what can I do to help’, caring exemplar of a Club member. Thank you Nat for being my “Lois Lane to Superman”.

LIFE MEMBERS

VALE: PEG DAVIDSON

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW LIFE MEMBER: GUY EDWARDS

Guy became a mem ber of Mul laloo SLSC with his wife Cheryl and two sons Aaron and Brody in 1998.

Once Guy suc cess fully received his Bronze Medal lion, he com-menced a jour ney that over the past 19 years has encom passed many roles within the club from an Exec u tive level to patrolling

the beach as a vol un tary life saver – in which he con tin ues to par tic i pate.

His resume is a tes ta ment to his strong vol un teer ethic and adapt abil ity across all facets of the club, and this is

demon strated by the awards that have been afforded to him by his peers.

More recently Guy has been a tremen dous ambas sador as an IRB dri ver and at the Aus tralian SLS Titles which is a sub stan tial effort involv ing many hours over many days. This was over and above his con tri bu tions as the Sup port Ser vices Gen eral Man ager for the Club at the time.

Life Mem ber ship is about spe cial or dis tin guished ser vice to the Club, so if you take the time to reflect on his per sonal con tri bu tion then with out his gen eros ity, the Club may well be in a diff er ent place.

Peg Davidson joined the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club in 1986 to support her two grandchildren who she admired absolutely. Peg brought with her an enthusiasm and experience that had a profound influence over a seemingly young surf lifesaving club striving for recognition not only within their peers but the local community. Young Peggy came to Mullaloo with a mountain of volunteer experience, so in today’s bureaucratic speak if she applied for a vacant front office position her resume would read something like; six years Administrator at the Royal Kings Park Tennis Club and 13 years Administrator at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. How could we possibly not take notice of that?

So, the journey commenced and with her niche already cemented into administration Peg was an outstanding volunteer for 31 years encompassing assistant Secretary for 10 years, Club Registrar for 6 years and Administration and Finance for 14 years. Peg handed over the busy reins to the Club’s first fulltime employee in 2005. The club recognised Peg as the Club Person of the Year in 1994 and, in 1996, her peers recognised her with Life Membership for her outstanding contributions.

Peg was an institution in her own right who demonstrated an impeccable memory for names, places and events. As a creature of habit, everyone that knew her would understand where she would be on any given day. During the week it was the office, Friday night at the club lounge, Sunday morning in the office and the afternoon in the lounge. Conversations were many and over a can of XXXX or two a simple inquiry would lend itself to a masterclass of Mullaloo history. In 2006 the Club helped celebrate Peg’s 80th birthday with a masked ball. The guests were greeted

with a cream sherry as a genuine reminder of time gone by and, as a show of respect, many people dressed as their favourite octogenarian. The night was a memorable event.

The club has cherished the 31 years that Peg has unselfishly given her time to the success and the struggles of Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club. Testament to her longevity and respect, many of the members who joined in the eighties adopted Peg as their Grandma, a role which she gratefully accepted. “If in doubt go and ask Peg, Peg knows just ask her”. On occasion, a member from the past would return, all grown up and with their new family and immediately seek out Peg to pay her respect with a kiss on the cheek and then proudly explain where they had been.

Many people wander through our lives and some leave an everlasting impression. In Peg was a living history of what Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club was all about and espoused the values of what ‘club’ meant. Sadly, at 90 years of age she said goodbye.

We will not forget our Peg, we will remember the part she played for the greater good and played very well indeed.

Much loved Life Member Peg Davidson: 31.8.1926 - 1.10.2016

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 7

PRESIDENT’S REPORTStuart Clarke | President

From the very beginning, this was always going to be a challenging season, with

so many forces of change to deal with – such as the Club room refurbishment, a downturn in the economy, new leadership of the Club and the passing of the Club’s dear friend and life member Peg Davidson. Even the weather took forever to turn ‘summery’.

So, early in the season I called for our members to bring your best – and that you did. This Annual Report is full of examples of members stepping up to play their part in delivering value to their fellow members and community.

One group of members who volunteered their time and skills to lead the Club through this change are your Directors of the Board. I would like to acknowledge and thank Directors Vicki Rasmussen (Deputy President), Steve Lee, Laurie de Mamiel, Ed Neilan and Jenni Wood. Your leadership has successfully seen our Club through one of its most difficult seasons.

The other group of members I would like to acknowledge and thank are the General Managers Nicole Cassimatis, Mark Cleary, Alistair Cook, Steve Mignon and Carlo Tenaglia. Your volunteer efforts in leading our Club’s portfolios with your Managers have delivered a dazzling array of services for so many.

Huge thanks to our outgoing General Managers Sandy Clarke, Guy Edwards and Steve Mignon. Your contributions to surf sports, support services and operations respectively over many years saw our Club

reach new heights of service and excellence.

Then there’s our dedicated crew of 13 Managers. You’ll see their names listed under our Club Officers and throughout this Annual Report. These Managers volunteer a big chunk of their private life to deliver value to our members, so thank you. I would like to acknowledge and thank the outgoing Managers for their contributions – Garry Addison (Sponsorship), Sandy Clarke (Competition), Rachael Crabb (Education), Jacqui Eley (Juniors), Andrew Manning (Life Saving), Tayla Tenaglia (Youth) and Chetan Zavery (Finance).

I would like to thank our staff: Karen Oliver (Office Manager), Gemma Nicholson (Marketing Coordinator) and Jenny Ducasse (Administration Assistant) for their contribution – your knowledge, patience and commitment are very much appreciated.

So, how successful were we? One indicator of our performance is the accolades we received. Since the Club won Surf Life Saving Western Australia (SLSWA) Club of the Year for 2015/16, we qualified as a candidate for Surf Life Saving Australia’s National Club of the Year. Thank you to Carlo Tenaglia and Vicki Rasmussen for presenting the Club’s case in October 2016. The Club came an agonisingly close second – fitting recognition of our excellence.

We also had 10 members selected as finalists across 15 awards for the SLSWA 2016/17 Awards of Excellence, along with our Club making finalist for Patrol Club of the Year. Congratulations to Anne-Marie Widermanski who won back-to-back Assessor of the Year.

Success can also be measured by the things we do. An obvious example of this success was the refurbished Club rooms. A huge thank you to the Building Committee of Vicki Rasmussen (Chair), Ed Neilan, Mark Cleary, Steve Lee, Martin Kane and Brett van der Mescht, who completed the Committee’s functions in January 2017.

The relationships we foster signify our success. We continue to have an excellent relationship with our major partner the City of Joondalup. Their willingness to fund our Club and engage in a sophisticated debate about joint investment, service delivery and social impact for our community is much appreciated. The financial support from LotteryWest and our many sponsors is also acknowledged and much appreciated. Our relationship with our State association SLSWA has further developed, with their professional management of surf life saving and funding support also much appreciated.

Success can be measured by the lessons we learn. We found several areas we could improve, so we committed to a suite of activities under the banner of Project Prepare. For example, we are re-engaging with our Life Members, gathering feedback from members, investigating improvements in technology and membership structure and harnessing renewed leadership and management skills.

Our hope and plans for the future are also indicators of success. We have high aspirations to create a new level of value for members and the community. For example, we are investigating an “Assistance Required” mental wellbeing project, exploring new research and innovation opportunities and considering new partners.

I think our biggest challenge as a Club is our ability to continue to care enough to get involved – to transcend the distractions that drag us away from our will to volunteer. If we care enough, we give. And when we give, we create amazing value – truly opportunities for life, on and beyond the beach.

Finally, I would like to thank my wife Sandy Clarke and family Josh, Jared and Tacey for their patience and support. Sandy has taught me the love of the ocean, the power of volunteering and the many, many facets of our Club. Her example has inspired me to greater service.

I look forward to again being inspired by you, our members, as we navigate another season of challenges and triumphs.

Yours in surf life saving, Stuart Clarke

RISK AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE REPORT

MSLSC Board has continued to emphasise the need to have an independent Risk and Governance Committee separate to the Board.

The Committee is not a policy making body but has assisted the Board in effective monitoring of the Club’s organisational performance through risk management within an approved governance and policy framework.

The Committee reviewed and advised on all aspects of the Club’s governance and processes with a focus on financial performance and condition, internal accounting and finance controls, financial statements, reporting processes, risk management processes and mitigation strategies and ensured fraud, corruption and misconduct prevention strategies are in place. In addition, impacts on the Club from legislation, capital expenditure and the protection of the Board, Club members and other stakeholders were considered and reviewed.

Throughout the 2016/17 season the Club continued to be well managed with a heavy emphasis on ensuring the financial strength of the Club was maintained after the completion of the new Club facilities and the spending of the previously saved funds for refurbishment. The

coming season’s budget remains consistent with previous years. In the following years, we anticipate additional revenue from the commencement of payment of commercial rent and other activities to add to the financial capability of the Club.

The Risk and Governance Committee believe there are no outstanding matters that have or in the short term put the Club and it’s members at risk.

In addition to the general matters outlined above, the focus in 2017/18 will be on the Western Australian Government Department of Commerce requirements to review our Club’s constitution and policies to be in line with the guide for Incorporated Associations in Western Australia. In addition, work will be needed on the risks for life saving services and our Club facilities, amongst other things.

BOARD REPORT

Jenni WoodStuart Clarke Laurie de Mamiel Ed Neilan Vicki RasmussenSteve Lee

The Board had an intense start to the season, at one stage meeting fortnightly to address the many agenda items important to the success of the Club. In addressing these items, the Board was conscious of the Club’s Board/Management structure, which requires Directors to ‘govern’ (i.e. set vision, strategy and direction; provide leadership, policy and procedures; represent stakeholders) and Managers to ‘manage’ (ie. administer and implement value for members). The Board was also aware of its increasing obligations, with not-for-profit organisations more strictly regulated these days.

The Board’s work this season focussed on four main areas – Culture, Strategy, Personnel and Procedures. The following provides a summary of the Board’s activities for each of these areas. Several of the activities mentioned are current or planned elements of “Project Prepare” – our Club’s concerted effort between April to September 2017 to prepare for the coming season and beyond.

STRATEGY

This season the Board worked to modify the Club’s strategic direction in three ways – clarifying its business model, reviewing its Strategic Plan and pursuing new initiatives.

With the refurbished upstairs facilities opening in December 2016, the Board lead the adjustment of the Club to the new premises and business model. For example, the Board considered and negotiated the inclusion of a commercial tenant as a partner in the Club (physically and financially) and managed the involvement and rent sharing deal with the City of Joondalup.

The Board conducted a mid term review of the Club’s Strategic Plan – 5 years into the 10 year horizon of the plan. Fair to say that the Club has performed well for some strategic priorities (eg. financial viability, delivering services), while others need more work to achieve the Club’s goals (eg. driving sustainable operations, One Club). This review provides a clear focus for the next few years of activity for the Club, including recruiting the right people for the right jobs, creating pathways to opportunities for members, developing sound business management practices, creating a comprehensive communications

strategy and practice, streamlining and modernising our operations and building effective management structures.

Earlier in the season we held a Club Forum to gather ideas from members to improve the Club. We had ideas aplenty. Obviously we have not implemented them all as we would have been swamped by all the changes, but three key themes were clear – that members wanted online service, better communications and a recommitment to our values and supportive behaviours. The Board has supported managers to pursue these themes, such as online payments for competition entries and events and more consistent newsletter and online communications.

CULTURE

The Board has spent many an hour discussing the concept and our Club’s practice of volunteerism. One of the main cultural issues the Board has wrestled with this season is the natural tension between recruiting and managing volunteers. At the same time as we attempt to attract enough appropriate volunteers to assist in delivering the services of the Club, we also need to enhance the quality of our service as the expectations of our members and our community (eg. through legal requirements) increase.

The Board has confronted this issue by encouraging managers to understand the risks of their operation and put appropriate mitigations in place. The Board have asked managers to map procedures to see where they can streamline activities to reduce the burden on volunteers learning and delivering activities.

Another cultural issue the Board has dealt with this season is member behaviours. With a change in expectations throughout our community, the ‘standard’ of accepted behaviours has shifted. The Club’s grievance and disciplinary cases of the past seasons are examples of this shift. The Board is now acutely aware that our Club must adjustment and have commenced designing changes to address this issue.

The Board has heard many cultural issues raised during the season. To gain a better understanding and an in-depth insight to potential solutions, the Board has committed

Board Report | Continued

to conduct a Cultural Survey of members. This survey and the inaugural Life Members Workshop are the start of an improved feedback loop that will invigorate the Club’s culture and guide the Club’s activities in the coming year.

PERSONNEL

In response to calls from management to improve the communication between the Board and managers, this season the Board made concerted efforts to create a closer and more productive link between the Board and General Managers. These included:

• Trialling the ‘Board Buddy’ system (where Directors were partnered with General Managers in the first half of the season to understand the portfolios and provide input to GMs from a Board perspective);

• Formalising the written communication of minuted decisions between the Board and General Managers; and

• Having joint meetings of the Board and General Managers.

One of the most important roles of the Board is to recruit and appoint General Managers and Managers. This season the Board worked to clarify this function by drafting a recruitment and appointment protocol. It also committed to conducting more direct recruitment activities, such as the Future Leaders Forum that invited all members to listen to the strategic direction, future budget position and new initiatives of the Club as preparation for their potential volunteering to management roles.

PROCEDURES

The Board has taken an active interest in the ‘machinery’ of the Club this season – the procedures that assist or hinder good decision making and actions. It has found that where things are working well, there’s usually a clear and well practiced procedure which has been optimised. Where performance is inconsistent or less than it could be, there’s often a lack of clarity in procedures and a need to review and refine the way decisions are made and work is done.

The Board has commenced several reviews and upgrades in procedures to improve our Club’s performance. These include procedures related to grievance and disciplinary cases, finance management, reporting and budgeting.

COMMITTEES OF THE BOARD

Under the Constitution and By-Laws, the Board has the authority to establish and task various committees. These committees are usually established to address a specific issue and inform the Board. They are an effective way of attracting members with relevant expertise to contribute their time and skills.

There are two types of committees the Board establishes – standing committees (that have an indefinite term) and temporary committees (that are established and disbanded according to need).

The Club currently has two standing committees, being the Risk and Governance Committee and the Honours and Awards Committee. The Risk and Governance Committee has been active this season, particularly in assessing and reporting on various risks (see report in break out box on page 8). The Honours and Awards Committee conducted their annual review of life member candidates to recommend to the Board and also supported the drafting of applications for members in the Surf Life Saving Western Australia Awards of Excellence. This was a valuable contribution that resulted in the recognition of our newest Life Member, Guy Edwards, and a high number of members being nominated as finalists at the SLSWA Awards.

Several temporary committees operated in 2016/17, including the Building Committee (completed in January 2017) and the Technology Committee and Membership Structure Committee (both commenced in May 2017). The Technology Committee is working on a strategy for the Club to source and apply appropriate technology, while the Membership Structure Committee is investigating options to broaden the range of membership. The Board look forward to these Committees reporting to the Board in 2017/18.

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 11

It has been another exciting year in the area of operations, with our club striving to improve on our normal high levels of service. Being awarded the SLSWA Club of the Year for the previous season buoyed our enthusiasm to progress further. With Patrols, we started the season early to cover the long weekend in late September which can bring with it some warm weather. We continued our normal Abalone patrols but worked closer with our partners: the City of Joondalup Rangers and SLSWA. This resulted in the City Rangers having some of our radios to act as observers/spotters to further our scope of coverage and effectiveness in this difficult environment. We also trialled the use of drones provided by SLSWA at the Abalone patrol. This was the first time the club had used this new technology for lifesaving surveillance. Thanks to Carlo Tenaglia for piloting the drone. This season also saw a change of management late in the season. Andrew Manning stepped down from the role of Manager of Lifesaving Services. Thank You Andrew for your many years of dedicated service. Brett Wenn has stepped in to cover this vital role and will further upskill over the off season.

The education team lead by Tony Greenfield again provided an excellent level of Education to our club members. Considering we had no training rooms due to the club refurbishment, the team still managed to provide a vast amount of training, mostly off-site. This season we changed the way the Trainers and Assessors were updated on the changes in education content and procedures with a more “hands on” approach. Everyone worked through a number of scenarios that were very close to real life situations. Needless to say, there was a high level of professionalism displayed by our education providers. The skills maintenance sessions were all conducted in a seamless fashion with a majority of patrolling members updating their awards. Many thanks to Tony and the Education Team for a very productive season.

12 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

It’s over. Did summer come? It’s certainly one of the coolest I can remember!

We started patrol early, with three shifts over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, however the weather failed us and all patrols were on surveillance. I have been asked by a number of members why we do extra patrols in September and April and why we also remain on the beach long after some clubs have gone home. I believe, as a Club, we provide coverage over a long period with the best trained patrol members, as the community would expect us to. Our additional patrols allow us to remain relevant and an integral part of the beach-going public, ensuring the best safest outcomes for all beach users. This is reflected by the number of hours we racked up again this year – we are certainly envied by some other clubs. Lifesavers – you did yourselves proud!

A big thank you to the office staff for their support this season. The ladies responded professionally to all my last-minute requests for emails and assistance.

Thank you to all those members who received their SLSA National Patrol Service Awards and to Steve Mignon for presenting those awards.

Congratulations to all those that obtained a higher award this season or gained their Bronze or SRC for the first time to make patrolling worthwhile and enjoyable.

Tracey Tenaglia, once again, did an amazing job as First Aid Officer. This position has been handed over to Natalie Godwin, thank you both for your commitment to the club.

Thanks to Cameron Rapley for all the work with IRB’s, Kevin Fettes looked after the vehicle services, Trevor Bulley for handling the board repairs and Water Safety Officer, Mark Weir, for doing an amazing job yet again. I would also like to thank all who provided water safety

on Sunday mornings at carnivals, education and training sessions throughout the year.

Education team: Thank you! Always professional. Skills updates and requals or whatever we call them now – great effort through the trying construction phase with limited access to facilities. My hat comes off to Viv and Tony Greenfield.

Abalone Patrol, while small in numbers, brought some dedicated members who did a wonderful job and we are seeing the response from the public who appreciate us attending. Once again Natalie Godwin went above and beyond at the first patrol in very dangerous conditions. This prompted a major responsive from SLSA and COJ Ranger services who now carry surf radios in case further support is required.

Thank you also to the members who responded on short notice to provide water safety for the WA Open Water swim and the other events which the club was asked to assist with. Congratulations to the recipients of Club awards.

As most will know by now, I have handed over to Brett Wenn and look forward to Brett’s fresh approach to the portfolio. Thanks to Steve Mignon for stepping in when I needed to step back.

And as always, to the fantastic Patrol Captains - what a group! A job well done. To you and all our patrolling members, I thank you for the many hours of your time given this season in support of our community.

Finally, to our Lifesaving Committee: Wow, I couldn’t have done this role without your support. Thank you.

See you on the beach again soon.

14 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

EDUCATIONTony Greenfield | Manager Education

Well, we made it! With the building works that were scheduled for early in the season, 2016/17 was always

going to create some major challenges for the Education portfolio. With no access to club premises and no shop front as the office was moved out, there were a number of challenges facing the portfolio, the main ones being:

• Storage of equipment

• Lack of training premises

• Shop front for members to book and pay for courses

• Payment method for courses

What continues to amaze me is the way that in spite of the challenges, our volunteers continue to step up and find a way to make things happen. They say that necessity is the mother of invention – and we have managed to design and commence implementation of some significant changes that will serve us well into the future. Before I go into detail, I really need to thank everyone who got on with ‘business as usual’, irrespective of the challenges. The level of commitment, professionalism and communication in a difficult environment was absolutely outstanding.

Everything we do is aimed at ensuring we have suitably skilled and qualified surf lifesavers on the beach to meet our core commitment – beach safety for the public and for our members. There is the added benefit of qualified members being able to compete in surf lifesaving competitions and additional skills for members to apply at home and in the workplace.

So, huge congratulations and well done to all those who achieved a new award this year. The new awards attained were 52 Bronze Medallion, 51 Surf Rescue Certificate, 3 Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, 6 Apply First Aid, 7 Pain Management, 22 IRB Crew Certificate, 16 Radio Operator Certificate, 10 Silver Medallion IRB Driver, 3 Silver Medallion Beach Management, 3 Training Officers, 1 Assessor & 1 Facilitator. Details of all recipients and awards attained conclude this report.

On to the details of the year that has just finished! Firstly, thank you to the Widermanskis who stored Education’s training equipment for the first few months of the year until we managed to get a temporary home. Another thank you to the City of Joondalup who provided us with the use of the Rob Baddock Hall (for no cost) as this temporary home. We took full advantage of this facility,

with up to three courses being run on the Wednesday evening (5pm for SRC, 7pm for Bronze and ad hoc Patrol Captain, Trainer & Assessor proficiencies, workshops or short courses). Due to the location, this meant the equipment was relocated to our home where trainers, parents, candidates (and Viv) ferried the gear to and from our home to the hall every Wednesday – another big thank you to you all.

In addition to using the Rob Baddock Hall, catch up sessions and some assessments were run from trainers’ homes, which made for some interesting scenario based training (thanks Helen O’Brien and Simon Gidley!)

Our core courses (Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion) commenced in August as usual, however, inclement weather made some water sessions challenging. Thankfully we had instigated a ‘shark mitigation policy’ whereby the first two wet sessions of each course were held at HBF Arena competition pool, before reverting to the beach. Once at the beach, more “thank you’s” to the parents who manned the tower and performed water safety. Other safety and shark mitigation strategies included the purchase of a water mannequin for use in IRB training. I am hoping we can expand this further for use in SRC and BM training this coming season.

As mentioned earlier, without a front of shop for candidates to book and pay for courses, we designed and implemented an online course registration process. This has proven an effective way to administer the courses and to allow easier information sharing between the Education team and the office. With this one document recording a history of contact from time of booking through to completion of the course and centralised record management, the days of missing awards or proficiencies should be behind us!

This online booking system unfortunately did not have a payment mechanism, so course candidates have kept the office busy recording and allocating their bank transfers for payment of their course materials. (Thank you Karen, Jenny and Gemma!). While an improvement on past practices, we are very aware of how labour intensive this process still is, so the Education admin team is working with the IT team to develop an effective booking and payment system for the coming season. This will free up office staff time and also give Viv Greenfield back 40 hours per week in peak periods.

More call outs have to go to:

Mark Hills and Guy Edwards who, overseen by Bernie Flint, have trained and re-qualified a number of Community SRC holders – this is a great source of revenue for the club and your efforts are really appreciated.

Sandy Clarke – for running a Bronze and SRC course at the same time over a two week period – a huge effort and massive workload – thank you Sandy!

Simon Gidley – ran one Bronze course and an SRC course, along with assisting on two other courses and willingly assisting with additional skills sessions for candidates who needed them. The efforts Simon put in deservedly won him the Training Officer of the Year award.

ANNUAL SKILLS MAINTENANCE

Our annual skills maintenance is the process whereby we ensure our patrolling members are updated with changes implemented by SLSA and SLSWA and checked to ensure they still have the requisite skills to safely patrol our beach.

These skills maintenance sessions normally start off with the Trainers and Assessors. They get more of an information download and trial new approaches to ensure a consistent approach for the coming year. As this session has more of an incident management focus, for the first time we also included the Patrol Captains in this session. At the suggestion of Barbara Loudon, resuscitation updates took a new turn where we trialled lifelike scenarios. This was so successful that it was implemented in the other skills maintenance sessions. Feedback on this was very positive from all involved.

As a result of the efforts of a very special group of club members this year, 311 Bronze Medallion, 57 Surf Rescue Certificate, 78 Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, 104 Spinal Management, 60 IRB Crew Certificate and 37 Silver Medallion IRB Driver, 26 Assessors, 30 Assessors and 5 Facilitator award holders were made proficient for another season. While this massive task takes a lot of effort from

all our Trainers and Assessors to conduct (thank you all again – active Trainers and Assessors are listed further below), special thanks go to Maren Scriven who started proficiency planning; Chrissie Payne for administering and co-ordinating it all; and Anne-Marie Widermanski for inputting all the names and awards for proficiencies into Surfguard. This massive task, along with being our fall back for fixing paperwork problems, is really appreciated.

SERVICE AWARDS

This year was the first year that SLSWA awarded club Assessors with service awards in recognition of their ongoing service. Congratulations to those recipients listed at the end of this report.

EDUCATION LEADERSHIP PANELOf course, none of the above would be possible without the co-ordinated efforts of some very important people who support me in my role. My Education Leadership team have proven invaluable and the ‘behind the scenes’ work done by them all is really appreciated. A big THANK YOU to:

Helen O’Brien – for helping with managing course bookings; ordering and collating course materials for candidates and distributing online learning materials at the timed swim sessions, along with being Lead Trainer for Bronze 2.

Phill Dee – co-ordinated training and assessment of all IRB awards, including the proficiencies. Phill also conducted nearly all of the IRB proficiencies as well as making himself available for internal and external assessments. His efforts saw him as joint winner of the club Assessor of the Year award

Barbara Loudon – managed the higher ‘care’ awards (Apply First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, etc) and designed the scenario based resuscitations for proficiencies.

Anne-Marie Widermanski – always there as a source of knowledge; assisted with processing, paperwork and

proficiencies; and assessed numerous awards. She mentored trainee trainers and patrol captains through their paperwork and compliance; and is actively involved in the development and ongoing improvement of numerous awards at a national level. She is an amazing resource for our club. In recognition of the enormous effort she puts in, Anne-Marie was awarded SLSWA’s Assessor of the Year (for the second year running – after winning the Australian Assessor of the Year for SLSA last year).

And definitely not least – a massive thank you to my much better half - Viv Greenfield. With such a large membership, there is an increased risk of awards and proficiencies not being processed. To counter this, I asked Viv onto the panel to map and record our processes so we can implement a quality framework for the future. While she has achieved more than I had asked, she has also taken control of course registrations and co-ordination; taken on assessor and assessment co-ordination; reviewed assessment paperwork; assisted with timing swim times

for course candidates; stayed at home on Wednesday earlier in the season to assist with logistics for the movement of the Education equipment and done much more, including dealing with the paperwork bits that I hate! The Education portfolio would not have been able to achieve anywhere near what we have this year without her determination and persistence.

WHAT’S NEXT?

My plan is to continue to ensure we offer education opportunities to all members of our club in a fair and equitable manner. This will include advanced surf awards introduced by SLSA and SLSWA; as well as non-water based awards for those members whose skills do not involve getting wet! We will also look at implementing some targeted training for some of the skills gaps identified in conjunction with the Manager Lifesaving.

18 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

This season started with some difficulty, given the building works at the club. Registrations were held at the hall in Sorrento and the Ocean Reef Sea Rescue group Hall. This all seems such a long time ago. Special thanks to the Manager of Membership Lyn Brosens and her very special group of volunteers for going through all this chaotic period.

There were some changes also to the youth area with all U14 and U15 members spending time with their own groups on club days before the split into the competitors and those that assisted with the Nippers. Special thanks to Tayla Tenaglia Manager of Youth for ensuring this was well coordinated, with the able assistance

of Edgar Coello and Miles Laing the Age Group Coordinators. Tayla also had several outings with the Youth group and the river cruise was well patronised.

The Nippers – no longer referred to as Juniors had a challenging year. The season started with new manager, Troy Baird and a new committee. These guys had to deal with not only new roles but also an increased number of little Nippers. Through their hard work and that of the Age Group Managers, Assistant Managers and Liaisons, we ended up having a fairly successful season. Thanks to Mandy Lee, Colleen Gardener, Tanya Honor, Vicki Rasmussen, Paul Brierley, Troy Baird and Michelle Cook for their combined efforts.

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 19

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT (NIPPERS U7 - U13)

The pre-season started with the formation of a new committee to oversee the Nipper programme and season planning. The committee consisted of Mandy Lee, Colleen Gardener, Tanya Honor, Troy Baird (Manager) Paul Brierley and Vicki Rasmussen who were later joined by Michelle Cook as Nipper Liaison. These volunteers spent many hours planning to ensure the Sunday club days, education and lifesaving skills and carnivals were undertaken in the best possible way. Of course, they did all this with the help of many committed volunteers who worked together to achieve a great season for the Nippers.

This season, we had a large increase in numbers in the U7, U8 and U9 age groups that required extra volunteers to step up as Age Group Manager Assistants (AGMAs) to enable these groups to be split and more easily managed. This allowed all age groups to complete a revised education and lifesaving program run by the Age Group Managers (AGMs) and most groups also had the opportunity to participate in an exciting IRB awareness day.

As well as all the beach and water activities, the Junior Committee also had their hands full with various social get-togethers during the season which were well attended and great fun for all! This committee deserves huge thanks for their time and efforts this season, they have done the Club proud. Special thanks are extended to our Beach Set Up Crew and IRB drivers who ensured

the beach and water arena were in place for the start of each club day.

Thank you to our volunteers who acted as AGMs, AGMAs, Water Safety, Age Group Liaisons, competition officials and carnival water safety members. Also thanks to the age group parents that assisted with sausage sizzle, beach set up and beach pack up for the respective age groups.

U13 BOYS | STEVE LEE

The Under 13 Boys this season had another very successful campaign. Although not as dominant in the results at the State titles as previous seasons, the boys had a great time and we had smiles all round which was pleasing to see each week.

We had a total of 30 boys enrolled at the start of the season and had an average of 23 turn up each week and approx. 12 to each carnival, which I think is a solid performance.

The young men in the under 13 age group further developed their surf skills in swimming and board paddling and we have some outstanding competitors which bodes well for the future as they move into the youth section of the club next season into the Under 14’s.

I’m really honoured to have taken the age group through for the last few seasons, and without the support of Michelle Cook, George Courtois and the parents of this age group who got stuck in and assisted each week we

couldn’t have achieved the good results and fun times had by all, so thanks very much to those people for all of your help.

U13 GIRLS | SARA WARNER

Oh WOW what another incredible season, the last in Nippers for these amazing Under 13 ladies.

These ladies have yet again pushed themselves with such determination and shown us all their true strength of character. The one thing that has impressed me greatly over past few seasons, is their comradeirship, sportsmanship and willingness to embrace all and always give it their best.

A huge thanks to Millie, Tabbetha, Maddie and Maxine our incredible AGMAs. The U13 ladies have been truly lucky to have you all as inspiring role models and you have been such an incredible help to me throughout the season. Also a big thankyou to Vicki, who was amazing and for the countless hours put in that we didn’t see, thankyou.

To our parents, who were always enthusiastically involved, from organising beach activities, spending countless hours in challenging waters and making that all important coffee run –

Club day attendance was always met with lots of chatter, talks of sleep overs and rivalry with the U/13 boys. If to pin point a most memorable moment of our club days, it would have been in the flag arena. Nine ladies on the line, just about to give the command to “go” and there in the middle of the arena heading straight for our girls, one giant snake – ahhhhh – I’ll leave it up to you as to what happened next, but it was chaos !!!

The 2017 State titles went well and was met with a strong contingent from the U/13 ladies. Mid week training had paid off and although there were tears, and laughter from the ladies and parents we were able to match it with the best – great job.

Lastly, although this is the end of your junior involvement, the future in the club has begun, you have all obtained a wealth of knowledge that will empower you to become exceptional surf life savers whilst enjoying all that the beach and friends offer. Thank you to each one of you - truly inspirational – I’ll look forward to catching up for a “ladies” swim soon!

U12 BOYS | ANDREW BROWN

Wow! Another fantastic Mullaloo Surf Life Saving season for the U12 boys! It has been tremendously rewarding for me to spend time watching these boys develop into

young men and sharing in their evolving characters of friendship camaraderie, humour and enormous spirit. On Sundays, we had regular attendance of over 25 boys throughout the season with a number of new members joining our ranks, and who, having been welcomed by the boys, who have stepped in heartily and taken on the challenge right from the outset.

There has been active participation in the midweek extra surf club training by the boys, getting down early mornings or in the afternoons to hone and improve their skills on the beach, in the surf and on the boards. I’d particularly like to thank the coaches and trainers for giving their time. Their teaching skills have delighted and encouraged so many this year!

Year on year we have improved in skills on the beach with tremendously exciting flags challenges and sprint offs, although I feel that we have underperformed as a team in the beach arena. We certainly have some rising talent to complement some of our stand out performers and for the 2017/18 season I am keen to focus on development of the team potential in this area. In the surf our skills continue to develop and have certainly paid off with our achievements!

Attendance at Carnivals and the Country Carnival down in Albany was really encouraging, with Mullaloo U12 boys continuing to outnumber the other clubs and to maintain the distinction of the most competitors in the surf race - well done boys! One of the best stats was that we had five boys in the State final of the Surf Race, which was more than any other club!

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 21

Throughout the season, a massive thank you to Mums and Dads for the support with water safety and help. Your willingness and keen interaction is sincerely appreciated!

The ability of the boys to step up and take on the challenge whilst encouraging each other through tough times is something their parents can be well proud of; I certainly am.

U12 Club Champs saw an incredibly exciting and closely fought points-day battle, eventually separated by just one point! Luke McChord was the winner & runner up was Jayden Evans. Ethan Battle was the most improved competitor, and the AGM award went to Drew Brown for his great determination and encouragement to his mates!

It has indeed been truly heartening to witness each one of you boys show individual courage and dig deep with determination, challenging and extending yourselves to understand and exceed your limits! Thank you boys. See you next season!

U12 GIRLS | EMMA BAMFORTH

The U12 Girls are such a fantastic group of kids along with very supportive and involved parents, which has led us to having another great season. Every one of the U12 girls showed vast improvement over the season and they should all be very proud of their personal achievements. It was great to see so many attending the mid week training sessions. Their ability and confidence, particularly in the water arena, for this group as a whole has improved tremendously this season.

I have been impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm to participate, their impeccable manners, and for the way in which they support, encourage and cheer on fellow teammates. We had a number of new girls join our team this year and it was great to see them fit seamlessly into the group. It has been wonderful to watch friendships develop within the team – kids and parents alike.

We had great attendance numbers at each carnival held throughout the year, which culminated in the State Champs in March. A huge congrats to Molly Bean, Ella Bevan, Jade Bamforth, Edie Bushby, Jorjya-Rose Crockett, Claudia Dineen, Eva Ferguson, Georgia Frean, Koru Jackson-Barker, Leigh Kimber, Sophie Mills, Caylin Robey, Jenna Stummer and Alana Sim who successfully qualified for and competed at the States. Particular mention goes to Alana Sim who won silver in the beach sprint event and to Sophie Mills and Edie Bushby who won gold in the R&R event! Well done girls.

It has been a privilege to be involved in the development

of this great group of girls and I thank all the parents for their support and assistance throughout the year. It has been a real team effort, which is greatly appreciated by all.

Keep training over the winter break girls and I look forward to seeing you all back on the beach for the next surf season!

U11 BOYS & GIRLS | BRETT WARNER

Well, the season came and went in the blink of an eye!

As a group, we held the traction that was generated from the previous season. The focus on fun, development and fun was well maintained!

There was still a differing level of confidence, but this will be a constant within life’s path and the seasons learning vacuum was priceless.

It is always humbling to see the parents actively involved and we really appreciate you for that. So thank you.

Bec and Charlie were amazing, yet again and continued to build trust, confidence and enjoyment into all Club Days. As an Age Group Manager, this made the role an absolute pleasure.

Club Day attendance was consistent to last year’s and a key point to note was that the inclusion in water based activities increased. So well done to the group. Always rewarding to see the kids face their fears and tackle it head on. A year older and wiser maybe!

The 2017 State Titles went well with more competing than the previous season. There were tears, cheers and high fives all round as each participant ticked off personal goals. Whilst not everyone wins a medal, it’s the ability to actively compete and take something away that sets a benchmark for the 2017/18 season.

Lastly, we are excited to be returning for the 2017/18 season. The Club Days will be structured around focussed skills and as always with the U11’s (soon to be U12’s) determination, participation and fun will be a part of it.

Always take time to smile as it’s the only curve that puts things straight.

See you at the flag for the 2017/18 season.

U10 BOYS | MANDY LEE

It has been such a privilege to work with this group of boys, whose enthusiasm continued to surprise us with attendance each and every club day numbering in the 30’s and 40’s. these challenges with your humorous and happy natures and for your support and encouragement for each other. It is because of you that our Sundays are so much fun!

We were excited to begin competing in interclub carnivals this year with about half of the group participating in at least one competition and a dozen of these going on to represent Mullaloo at the State Championships. This can be a daunting experience for a 9 or 10 year old, especially when you have no idea what to expect, but all came away

from those carnivals and championships with massive smiles and a fantastic sense of personal achievement. Many were also eager to step up an age group and help out in teams for the Under 11’s which is very satisfying to see as it must mean they are having fun! We had finals and medals aplenty from this eager and talented group of boys, but more impressive was their enthusiasm to just be there participating and hanging out with their mates.

Such large numbers on the beach and in the water meant a huge need for water safety help and our parents stepped up each and every week to help us out….thank you so much! Also a massive thank you to those parents

who undertook their Officiating Qualification and then helped us to fulfil our club requirement for officials at competitions. Thank you must also go to our AGM Assistants, who make our job so much easier and we just could not do it each week without them…Isabella Dudek and Jaslyn Eddy THANK YOU!!

Remember to keep fit over the winter….really work on that swimming!....and we will see you all refreshed and raring to go for the start of next season.

U10 GIRLS | LOUIS CHEESEMAN

What a fantastic year. This was the first year of competition for our girls and they fully embraced it. From points days and carnivals to State Championships, our girls were fantastic. Our Mullaloo girls won three of the seven possible gold medals at the State Championships. I would also like to congratulate all of the girls who attempted the Junior Club Challenge. These were some of the biggest conditions Mullaloo has ever seen. Like the parents, I was nervous for the girls, but they were so brave and skilled to take on the huge surf and the massive swim component. I was in awe of you! It is fair to say, the extra training days during the week to develop your skills definitely paid off to tackle such tricky conditions.

One thing I have really noticed this season, is the bond that is forming between the girls. The competitions and especially the relay events, has brought our girls much closer. It truly has become a team sport. I feel the girls have created life-long friendships and I hope this group grows next season. With more events available to the girls, I feel we will be able to increase the core group of competitive girls.

This season could not have been so successful without some special people. I would like to thank Mandy Lee for Coordinating the Under 10’s. A special mention goes to

Ross Twyford for being AGM for the past three years. The girls certainly missed him this year. Lastly, to the parents, you are fantastic. The support you have given me and the girls has been amazing. I am looking forward to even more parents getting involved next year.

I can’t wait for next season to be involved with this wonderful group of girls. Thank you for making this season so much fun.

U9’s | LAURA STUMPERS & EMMA MOEBIUS

Another ripper of a season for our Unreal U9’s! The opportunity to compete in team events with the older clubbies presented itself with lots of fun being had by all those that dived in headfirst!

This season saw Emma Moebius stepping up into co-AGM role alongside Laura as the training stepped up a notch and the progression that our Nippers have shown over this time has been outstanding! All of our Unreal U9’s should be proud of their efforts, they are truly amazing! The improvement and comraderie makes our hearts melt as we see fears conquered and self-belief blossom.

Emma and myself would like to say a HUGE thank you to our brilliant AGMAs - Emily, Amber and Siena, who once again showed impressive leadership skills; Our parent/ carer group who always stepped up to assist - thank you, we hope you know how much it means to both us and the kids!

Next season will see Laura take a backseat after 3 years as AGM as Emma takes the helm and steers our soon-to-be Unreal U10’s to bigger and better things.

See you down on the beach, Emma and Laura.

U8’s | GEMMA VESELY

Firstly, I would like to say a massive thank you to all those that have been involved with the Under 8’s this season. We have got an amazing team, too many to name but without you we would not have been able to teach all the under 8’s so many valuable beach skills that they have learnt this season.

The children really found their feet with the sprint and flag races through all the games we played, which helped enhance the children’s speed, co ordination, concentration and fitness.

Each Sunday the children learnt valuable life skills and had lots of fun with their new friend’s

We are so proud of all the children and parents that took part in our under 8 competition. The morning was a great success; it is amazing how children come alive when their

parents are taking part. The piggyback race was a great way to start.

Well done to Finn and Hayley coming first in the run/swim and Sean and Ali for the parents run/swim.

George and Alila were first in the flag races and Liam and Gemma for the parents flag races. You guys Rock.

After Christmas we introduced the boards – this was totally new to most of the children and me to be honest. We were lucky to have some fantastic water days for the children to get to grips with what they were supposed to do. Their first few weeks of board paddling consisted of being pushed out by parents and falling off several times, but by the end of the summer the children were paddling around the cans with the dolphins. What an amazing experience.

So, that brings us on to our water safety. We would like to say a massive thank you for getting our children on the boards, teaching them the rules and safety of the water. You are our superstars in orange. Your knowledge and support this season has been fantastic, the children have grown in confidence in the water and totally knocked it out of the park when they took on the Swell in the Junior Club Challenge, they were amazing.

I hope you all join us for the 2017/18 season.

U7’s | LUKE ELIOT

The future stars of our surf club – the more than 100 strong group of U7s – had a very dynamic season which only got better as the weeks went on.

There were some challenges at the very start of the season but the group was able to settle in to a very fun and productive routine under the guidance of Nat Godwin and her assistants, Julie Rapley, Luke Eliot, Imogen McDonald and Marissa Williams.

Sunday morning sessions involved a mixture of games, many of which re-enforced essential beach skills, competitions such as flag races and learning, including hand signals, which will set a strong foundation for further development in seasons to come.

The U7s clearly demonstrated progress – they were increasingly willing to run faster, swim further and generally have a go at all the activities. Importantly, the parents also grew in confidence with a number of willing volunteers happy to jump in and assist to enable faster rotations through activities.

We’re all looking forward to bigger and better progress as the group moves to U8s.

While they may not show fear out in the surf, there were plenty of frightened youth as we visited the Fremantle Prison on the night of 25 November. The group of 20 were taken through a tour of the prisons darker history and some even got a taste of the punishment the inmates endured.

Surf life saving and the volunteer work done by the members of Mullaloo is an incredible Australian experience and we had the pleasure of hosting the International students of UWA to show off our Club and our skills. They couldn’t wait to dive into our pristine blue waters! Some of them even had a go rescuing each other with a tube and even board paddling. Thank you Ellie Black, Darcey Brooks, Brad Mulroy, Ayden Bartle and Laurie de Mamiel for your assistance on the day. We also had a visit from Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre as a part of the City of Joondalup Youth Outreach program. Thank you to Rachael Crabb for hosting their visit.

Four of Mullaloo’s finest youth were selected to attend the Surf Life Saving WA’s youth leadership camps. Ben Hillen represented the club at Rise Up camp held in Pemberton, while Darcey Brooks, Neve Macleod and Cory Bartle attended the TOAD camp on Rottnest Island. These participants were excellent representatives of the club and I was extremely proud to receive such wonderful feedback from the participants and the camp

leaders regarding their behaviour. Congratulations also go to Cooper Schulz for being awarded the Under 14 Achiever of the Year award from the WA Surf LIfesavers 25 Year Club. Well done Cooper!

Thank you to all who have supported me in my time as Manager of Youth Development, I have enjoyed my past three years and as I choose to step down from the role, I send my best wishes to the youth of the future seasons.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTTayla Tenaglia | Manager Youth Development

This season saw some big changes for the structure of the youth membership of the

Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club. Sunday morning beach activities now meant that the U14 and U15 age group members would start the season in their own company, given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the changes of leaving juniors and entering into youth. These changes were made to streamline with the modifications made by the state and national associations last season, which included U14’s in youth competition. Under the guidance and support of the always-encouraging Edgar Coello and Myles Laing, the youth were able to enjoy a relaxed and fun club day and as the season progressed into 2017, the youth were included into the senior members club activities. It was fantastic to see that these structural changes provided a great club experience for the youth age group and I was highly pleased by how welcoming the club members were during the transitions.

Again, the annual Youth River cruise was hosted by Mullaloo on the 18th February, with a fantastic turn out by the Mullaloo youth members and the youth of the other WA clubs. This event provides an opportunity for the young adults to socialise and meet with other surf life saving members away from the beach environment and/or competition setting. It was a beautiful night for a cruise down the Swan River and there was plenty of dancing and socialising by all. Thank you to Gayle Gould, Vicki Rasmussen and Tracey Tenaglia for your assistance on the night, and to the youth for continually supporting this event.

MEMBERSHIPLyn Brosens | Manager Membership

The challenges faced by the Membership portfolio over the last year due to the transformation of the clubhouse, were considerable. Without an office available to members at weekends, the annual registration process had to be held in a variety of different venues over several weekends. As a result, our loyal Membership volunteers had to devote many more hours to ensure that registration was completed in time.

The unswerving commitment of our volunteer registrars was again evident in the smooth transfer of data into the national Surfguard database over several weeks. This year, nearly 1,900 members joined the club, despite the upheaval of this year of change.

LONG SERVICE MEMBERSHIP STATUS

It is important to recognise the contributions of dedicated club members who meet the requirement of ten years of continuous patrolling service. Such members are entitled to apply for reclassification of their membership status to Long Service. This year four members fulfilled this requirement, demonstrating their lasting commitment to the club.

It is now club policy to review national patrol service awards for five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty five years patrolling. Qualifying members will have completed over sixteen hours of patrol service (not water safety), each year to receive the awards.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

The Awards and Recognition Committee met several times to assess the suitability of long term members who have contributed significantly to the club in a variety of different ways. As a result, Guy Edwards has been inducted into the esteemed group of Life Members, for his long-term service in training, assessing, management, lifesaving and IRB activities.

ANNUAL AWARDS

John Dooley kindly assumed the responsibility of organizing the Annual Awards night in my absence, along with Sandy Clarke who organized all the trophies ,awards and presentation. This was much appreciated. The evening was held on 6 May in our newly refurbished clubrooms, beautifully decorated by Penny Fortmann and helpers. The Master of Ceremonies was Jeff Davidson who entertained the crowd in his inimitable style and ably assisted by Kirsten Fortmann and guests. The guests of honour, City of Joondalup Deputy Mayor, Russ Fishwick and Vice Patron Albert Jacob, Councillor for City of Joondalup Philippa Taylor, Member for Joondalup Ms Emily Hamilton and Member for Moore, Ian Goodenough. The Annual Awards of Excellence celebrated the most prestigious contributions of members, recognizing training, coaching, lifesaving, officiating in competition and administration.

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 29

Still as a relatively new portfolio, the Marketing team has changed and developed significantly over the last season. Thanks to the tireless work of Vicki Rasmussen and the Building Committee, along with a number of exceptional and dedicated volunteers, we have added our newly branded Mullaloo Surf Shop to the range of services we offer our Members and community. My thanks to Cindy de Bomford and Penny Fortmann for their increasingly valuable skills, expertise and time for shaping the shop to our Members’ needs and wants.

The introduction of a new Communications Manager position has demonstrated the importance of accurate and fluid communications across all aspects of our Club, and thanks must go to Sandy Clarke for developing a clearer understanding of our communications avenues as well as investigating and implementing various media for us to ‘see what fits’ with our Club and culture.

The support we have received from our business community this season has enabled our Club to deliver better facilities both on the beach, in the water and in the Club building. As well as the huge support from City of Joondalup and LotteryWest for the building refurbishment, a grant from the City of Joondalup’s Sports Development Project allowed the purchase of three adjustable skis to better suit our

developing youth paddlers and SLSA’s Beach Safe Equipment Fund provided us with four new rescue boards to ensure we can maintain the highest level of safety on our beach. In addition, using funds donated from Perth Metro Volunteer Sea Rescue, the Club purchased new nipper boards – paving the way for our next generation of lifesavers.

This season, we welcomed new sponsors Playful Learners and Mullaloo Chiropractic Clinic, both local homegrown businesses in our community, and enjoy the continued support from several large and small businesses. Thank you to all our sponsors – we simply cannot operate without your support. We hope our Members continue to support our sponsors and Business Club members as their support of our Club cannot be underestimated.

Finally, thank you to Gemma Nicholson, our office-based Marketing Coordinator, for pulling all of the above together and supporting the whole marketing portfolio so professionally.

As I now step down from the GM Marketing position, due to relocation back to Queensland, I wish Mullaloo SLSC all the best in the future and will no doubt see you at Aussies 2018, in Scarborough.

30 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

In late 2016, the Communications role was created to address the growing need the Club has to keep our members

well informed and to identify ways to engage with our community beyond the beach. The Communications role supports all areas of the Club to maintain our relevance and promote our identity as an integral role within our community and remain proud of our volunteer commitment.

With this in mind, the communications effort this year has focussed on assessing the communications channels and invigorating ‘outreach’ to the community. One of the achievements in this area this season has been our digital and social media outreach, which has grown from a modest base to now consistently delivering some impressive statistics, such as…

Communications with our members were maintained through weekly e-news notifications, a monthly newsletter, direct email to identified groups, through our social media channels, Facebook and Instagram. Twitter and LinkedIn have now been added to the suite. Thank you to Laura Edmunds for your assistance with Instagram. Thank you to the many members who provided/shared and also allowed the Club to share and celebrate their experiences, achievements and stories throughout the season.

Mullaloo Surf News, our Club newsletter, is sent to more than 1,300 subscribers every month and provides information on a range of topics which included lifesaving, nippers, education and training, surf sports, calendar date reminders, event wraps ups and awards. Thank you to Gemma Nicholson for your work in providing a consistent newsletter service.

Thank you to Tyler Brown from the Community Newspaper

Group for her and the Newspaper’s support of the Club’s messages. Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club featured in 10 articles over the 2016/17 season.

We also had some good exposure through television, with Channel Nine broadcasting their morning show from Mullaloo beach. This provided our young ‘stars’ with an opportunity to get in front of the camera and one of our Life Members, Dave Wilson, his 15 minutes of fame eloquently explaining why he still loves training, competing and sharing the joy of the ocean and life saving service with his fellow members.

SO, WHAT’S IN STORE FOR OUR FUTURE COMMUNICATIONS CAPABILITY?

With such a large organisation, the Club has many channels of communication concentrated on specific functions or activities. A review of these channels found that the ‘octopus’ of communications lines were more than just ‘eight legs’ and that many areas of the Club had communications activities occurring in isolation to others. Naturally this creates clear, fast messages for the group of members receiving the information, but it misses the opportunity to spread the word wider to harness more interest/understanding and to cross-fertilise information across portfolios. In the coming year, the aim is to investigate improvements in the way we coordinate the communications to reap these potential benefits.

This will be enabled by more contemporary communications tools, as well as existing tools such as the Club App, and other online forums will also be pursued to enhance our communications capability. This is particularly important as we strive to identify and market opportunities that will drive sponsorship, commercial hire interest and connection to the Club’s restaurant partner.

I have enjoyed sharing our Club’s passion, volunteerism and sporting efforts through the communications role over the season.

I’d like to start with a special thanks to the ladies that volunteered. It has been a very mixed season with the start of our year

carting ALL our stock back and forth every sale from a family home to the registration days at Sorrento then the Boat Shed for pop up sales. It was a hard chore but many hands made light work. Our Shop Coordinator Penny Fortmann has again this year organised the rosters and training along with many, many other duties, thank you so much. And a huge thank you to these ladies who have made our shop one of a kind: Mary Angland, Donna Atkins, Ali Baker, June Borgogno, Sasha Bushby, Patty Colbourne, Michelle Cook, Kylie Cooke, Hayley Courtois, Jim deBomford, Renee Dineen, Kirsten Dobson, Kirsten Fortmann, Noel Fortmann, Penny Fortmann, Jo Foulkes, Lindsey Foy, Fiona Gatey, Louise Hewitt, Leisa Hudson, Suzanne Kennedy, Rachel Kremer, Amanda Lane, Elise Morris, Ari Pagano, Kate Pinnuck, Rosalind Potts, Dee Quinn, Sharon Ray, Alex Schaub, Angela Schipper, Kerry Snow, Aish Walker and Jenni Wilke. Without you we would not of been able to run such a great shop and we certainly would not be able to open it three times a week during summer to offer our members the opportunity to get our gear and now also being open to the public for sales.

Finally, in December, Paul Beattie, Enda Farnham, Dave Cronk, Jack Beattie and Alex Upston all helped in different ways (mostly with volunteering their labour for hours) worked to fit out the shop with the shelving and other facilities to get it up and going. Thank you to Paul and Enda for supplying most of the shelving free of charge at their own cost. Amazing effort thank you all so much.

Also, we need to thank the ladies that came down and helped with the Stocktake in May. As you can see, it is a lot of work but we have had a great team friendship this year, we have had many great laughs over the season and met many new members who we hope will join us in the new season ahead.

A final big thank you to our outgoing GM Nicole Cassimatis who has moved home to QLD. Nicole also put in many volunteer hours helping with the shift and uncountable other areas.

Anyone interested in helping out next year, please contact us on [email protected] – we would love to have you along.

32 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

The 2016/17 season delivered some amazing results for the Club. We achieved some outcomes for the Club which were firsts and therefore we continue to move forward each year.

With Surf Life Saving Australia starting to place a greater emphasis of involvement in Surf Sports, some new initiatives were implemented this season and more will be coming in successive year, reducing barriers and enabling more people to be involved. You will see more opportunities for involvement from many parts of our community in the future.

Our focus in Surf Sports this year has been to give each member an opportunity to achieve the best they can and develop an environment which allows anyone to be involved. Over future years we will expand the opportunities within the Club for members to become involved in Surf Sports to achieve the outcomes they want.

This year, I introduced a Surf Sports Advisory Group which would provide direction for the area. It was made up with a cross section of representatives to enable views to be presented when planning activities and direction for the Club. This will be expanded in future years so that we can enhance the experience further for our members.

The team was:Mandy Lee – JuniorsGayle Gould – CoachingDawn Jones – EventsCarlo Tenaglia – CompetitionJaime Roberts – Ski DevelopmentAndy Jones – Surf EventsMark Hills – Lifesaving EventsLuke Leeder – Beach EventsRichard Calnon – Surf BoatsCameron Rapley – IRB RacingSteve Lee – Board of Directors Representative

The results you will see in this area does not come without a huge amount of support from a number of areas. Gayle Gould continues to develop a coaching portfolio that provides opportunities for competitors to develop their skills and achieve the results to the best of their capability. Dawn Jones managed nine SLSWA events held at Mullaloo Beach as well as Club days which was a fantastic effort for the Club.

This season, Sandy Clarke stepped down from the competition area in September and I managed the competition portfolio which was immensely enjoyable. I hope to be able to recruit someone into this role for the next season bringing new ideas and support to this area.

CLUB SUNDAYS

We welcomed the Youth area into the senior fold of club days and it was encouraging to see the healthy numbers maintained in the Youth group throughout the season. Myles Laing and Edgar Coello did a great job keeping them busy and focussed on competition and lifesaving skills. For the competitive seniors, it was a challenge to fit in Club Days with the calendar being filled with a high number of SLSWA carnivals. It was great to see the faithful members turning up and turning their arms over be it on a board, ski or swimming! Thanks to Katrina West, Jeff Vidler, Jeff Baker, Kay Smith, Sandy Clarke and Carlo Tenaglia for coordinating some of the Sunday sessions.

POINTS DAYS AND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

These events bring out the best of our members friendly competitive spirit. Thanks to Andy Jones for the efficient running of these events, to Alison Gerrard who came down to official at each event, and to the parents recruited from the beach to help out. This was the first time that we had the Youth as part of these events and the support from U15 and U14 Liaisons Glenda Schulz and Bronwyn Brown was appreciated.

TED SCOTT MARATHON

Traditional events are always a highlight with all age groups involved in some way and Santa making an appearance. The windy conditions didn’t put off a good number of members prepared to take on the challenge of the full course. Ben Jones won the overall race and is the first male to achieve four open wins.

SLSWA HOSTED EVENTS

Mullaloo has been recognised by SLSWA staff and the officials that come to our beach for carnivals that we can be relied upon to do a good job of hosting any type of carnival. This season we hosted rounds of board, ski, iron, beach, Nippers, Senior teams, Country qualifying carnival, surf boat events, IRB racing and the Masters State Championships.

HELP AND SUPPORT

We are most fortunate to have a group of regular volunteers who help out in a range of ways when we host events, and this amazing group of regulars has been supported by a number of other members. There is a list of people to thank and I hope that I have captured all of the names. Apologies in advance if I have missed anyone. Thank you to everyone who assisted with the running of events in any way this season.

COACHING SERVICES

Apparently the season is over, but one season rolls over to the next for our coaches and athletes. Due to the increasing variety of disciplines that Mullaloo competes in, coaching continues throughout the year. This season we held training sessions and competed in:

• Beach• Belt• Boards• Champion Lifesaver• First Aid• Ironman• IRB Racing• March Past• Pool Rescue

• Rescue and Resuscitation

• Ski• Strength and

conditioning• Surf Boats• Surfing• Swimming

... keeping us extremely busy!

We continue to build on the sessions and disciplines available to athletes and rely primarily on volunteer coaches, who work tirelessly to ensure that our athletes reach their full potential and to whom we are forever grateful.

Many thanks to all the others who assist to ensure that training runs smoothly in the form of equipment maintenance, transport of equipment to and from training, water safety, water safety logs for junior training sessions, encouragement and motivation for participants, mentoring and of course parents, without whom children could not get to training.

As we continue to build the competition area of the Club, we have introduced coaching strategies to support our athletes, including the introduction of high performance board sessions in the Juniors section, sports psychology sessions building on the existing strength and conditioning sessions for senior competitors as well as the introduction of additional training sessions in many areas.

There are exciting times ahead in the coaching section. Many thanks to each and every one who has assisted to make the season such a massive success including all athletes, young and old who participated and pushed themselves at training, ideally leading to the achievement of their personal goals in their chosen disciplines.

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 37

Once again Mullaloo continues to have some amazing results in many competition areas. We have achieved these results

through good coaching programs and hard work from our competitors.

Two individual efforts stand out this season in the summer competition, including Wes Gould winning the Open Male Board race, which is a first for this Club, and then winning the U19 Male Board race – something which has not been done in over 10 years in WA. Ben Jones also had an unprecedented win for this Club winning the Open Male Ironman race which was also a first for this Club.

Whilst our competitor numbers are down in some areas, we continue to be involved in more competition areas including Rescue and Resuscitation for the first time in many years.

We did lose some of our senior competitors to other Clubs, our Surf Boat area was reduced and our younger U14 and U15 male competitors were down which impacted our overall standing with the summer competition. A reduction in flow through of competitors from the Junior areas over previous years is starting to impact the Senior groups so we will re-build in these areas over the next few years.

Nonetheless, we had some exceptional results in the IRB area for last season winning many medals at the State Level and making the finals at the National Level. Our Pool

Rescue results for 2016 lead to Mullaloo winning the senior competition and having a number of representatives in the Interstate Team. Our results at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships were sensational with a significant number of medals won. This was recognised through these teams being nominated as finalists for the Team of the Year for the SLSWA Awards of Excellence.

Our involvement in the 2017 Australian Championships was quite small this year as the economic climate took hold. With a small team, we had some great results at the Youth Championships and unfortunately the visit of Cyclone Debbie cut short the opportunity of our competitors to show off their skills.

Thank you to the many people who assisted this year with the competition area. With 53 competition events throughout the year, there were numerous people who provided their time at competitions, including officials, coaches, team managers and the management team to make the area run. This year we also introduced online registration for competition, which saved a significant amount of time in our office and provided more flexibility for competitors and parents wanting to register for an event. We will continue to introduce more initiatives like this for our members in the future.

Next season will see the introduction of more initiatives from SLSWA within the competition area, with new carnival formats and more opportunities for our community to be involved in our great sport.

MASTERS

Masters numbers still appear to be low with the State Championships being run on the same weekend as the Rottnest Channel swim. However, being run at Mullaloo beach meant we had the home ground advantage. With plenty of encouragement and banter between competitors in each area, it meant that a lot of fun was had by all. Over all our result was 4th, up one place from last season.

Full results are available on pages 40-44.

2017 YOUTH/STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our effort at State Championships was simply sensational across the many areas that we were involved with. Paul Brierley added an additional dimension with his involvement in re-invigorating the lifesaving events including R&R. Our teams were quite small this season and we hope to build on that in the future.

Our overall cumulation of results from IRB racing, Pool Rescue, Lifesaving events and Beach and Surf events meant that we finished 4th overall.

Full results are available on pages 40-44.

INTERSTATE REPRESENTATIVES

Mullaloo continues to have good representation at the State level within the Western Suns with two representatives this year at the Surf interstates at Alexandra Hedlands on the Sunshine Coast. We continued to provide a strong representation in the 2016 Interstate Pool Challenge on the Gold Coast. Mullaloo’s IRB racing team also provided the complete team for the 2016 IRB Interstate Challenge at Mollymook in NSW.

Overall Western Australia finished a creditable 3rd in each of the competitions.

2016 POOL RESCUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mullaloo continued to provide excellent representation in Pool Rescue with convincing results at the State Level. Having won the State Pool Rescue championships, we had an excellent representation of athletes travel to the Gold coast to compete at the Australian Pool Championships in August 2016.

With an overall total of 13 Silver and Bronze Medals, the effort was simply outstanding from our Male team including Brett Gould, Wes Gould, Ben Jones, Jake Smith and Callan Smith. This effort resulted in three nominations for Team of the Year at the SLSWA Awards of Excellence.

Full results are available on pages 40-44.

2016 IRB RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS

This group of competitors just keeps going from strength to strength.

With Cameron Rapley developing a solid team of colleagues and competitors we are now one of the largest IRB racing teams in the state, the group had some high expectations for results at the state champions. They were not to be let down with some excellent medal results and finishing second overall, but collecting the Dave Clark shield for the best team for the season for Josh Bull and Robbie Payne and the Combined Marine Shield for best performing female single crew across the season for Chelsea Bull and Rosalinda Wren.

A team of more than 30 competitors and entourage headed over to Mollymook in pursuit of National results. With some tough racing, as you would expect at that level, we made a number of semi’s and a final for Male rescue.

Full results are available on pages 40-44.

RESCUE 2016 – WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Every two years, surf lifesaving clubs from around the world come together to celebrate surf sports competition. In 2016, the competition was held in Noordwijk in the Netherlands.

We had a small contingent from Mullaloo with a group of Masters and our one open competitor Tayla Tenaglia attending this time and the carnival was run in a friendly spirit with great camaraderie.

We had a finalists in the Masters and Open female surf boats picking up medals and Mark Hopper just missed out in the Masters surf ski.

SUMMARY

The Club continues to enjoy enormous success in all areas of competition. There are some challenges in the future to maintain this success, however we enjoy the strong support from the Board of Directors and will continue to develop involvement of our members.

Overall our focus in the future will be to continue to develop our competitors to achieve the best outcomes for their efforts, whilst at the same time looking to rebuild a number of areas including the Beach and Surf Boat competition.

Many thanks to those who have assisted below and apologies if I have missed anyone out.

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 45

The Support Services area has overcome significant challenges over the last year as the Club refurbishment has had an obvious significant impact on our facilities and office operations. In July 2016, we moved our office into temporary accommodation in Joondalup and we are extremely grateful to Steve Lee for the loan of office space during this time. Many volunteers, and our staff, were involved in the physical packing and subsequent unpacking of office equipment, files, memorabilia and furniture and without these people, we could not physically have made the transition to, and from, the temporary office.

A big thank you and congratulations must go to Vicki Rasmussen, Carlo Tenaglia and the Building Committee for expertly guiding the refurbishment process alongside a raft of architects, designer, builders and tradies. As a group, we have created an outstanding new facility that can serve the Club in many ways for years to come. Included in getting this ready for our members was the tireless efforts of Jesper Rasmussen, who spent hours upon hours setting up the most important aspect – our bar! From policies and procedures, to ensuring all equipment worked perfectly and finding volunteers to pull that first pint, Jesper is to be commended for the amount of time spent getting this up and running in time for our opening night.

John Hillen has also been a key member of the Support Services team, managing our finances through a period of uncertainty and ensuring we have enough cash in the bank to complete the refurb and service our members and our community.

And finally, thanks to our trusty office staff: Karen Oliver, Jenny Ducasse and Gemma Nicholson for making everything work during the year and dealing with multiple, often unexpected requests.

46 MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT

If there was one word to describe the past twelve months for the Administration area it would be “challenging”. Changes in the management team and management styles, which is inevitable in a voluntary organisation, plus the relocation of the Office, placed a lot of extra work and pressure on our hard-working Office staff. The closing down of the Club for renovations and relocation of the Office gave the Administration area a long over-due opportunity to review, cull and store years of paperwork and equipment. This was expertly handled by Karen Oliver, Jenny Ducasse and Gemma Nicholson. Thank you for your assistance, patience and understanding with this process. As always, the Office staff faced these challenges with their usual good humour, commitment and professionalism.

Huge thanks to Steve Lee, Leeway Plumbing, Joondalup for the generous use of his office space during this period. This enabled the Administration area to continue serving our members with as minimal inconvenience as possible.

A big thank you to Alistair, Michelle, Josh and Aaron Cook, Todd and Glynne Bartle and Carlo Tenaglia for the final relocation of the office furniture and setup of the computer equipment back in our new Office space.

It is hard to believe we have been back at the Club for more than six months already. As we continue to settle into our fantastic Club premises, the Administration area remain committed to providing not only efficiency of service and support to the Board and Management team but a continuity of service to our members and the wider community, who utilise our facilities.

At a time when most people are busy and “time poor” this year we were fortunate enough to have two members who volunteered their time in the Office. Carol Cook joined the Admin area one day a week, assisting Karen Oliver with some of the more time-consuming tasks. Limitations meant we were only able to open the Office on a few Sundays throughout the season with Livia Hawker assisting in the Office on those days. The addition of online registration for education courses, carnival entries etc. and the Juniors managing their carnival entries within their area, hopefully helped and this didn’t cause too much of an inconvenience to members. Thank you Carol and Livia, we gratefully appreciate your time and effort.

As the Administration Manager I am fortunate that I support and am supported by amazing Office staff. Karen Oliver, Office/Accounts Manager has been working for the Club for nearly 15 years, witnessing numerous changes throughout those years. The challenges of working for a voluntary organisation and the timeframe of volunteers can be difficult. Jenny Ducasse, Administration Assistant, joined us in 2013 and it is difficult to remember her not being a part of the Office team. Jenny’s role now encompasses 100% of the administrative tasks. Thank you Karen and Jenny for your dedication, enthusiasm, commitment and patience with the challenges you faced this year.

FACILITIESJesper Rasmussen | Manager Facilities

Another amazing year at the club!

The transformation of the top floor was a massive success and a job well done by the building committee consisting of Vicki Rasmussen (Chair), Steve Lee, Mark Cleary, Martin Kane, Brett Van Der Mesch and Ed Neilan.

It saw our club rooms move into the 21st century and look amazing. Our building will now also incorporate a restaurant, which should hopefully open by the end of the year.

The Cafe downstairs changed lease and had a revamp. The Cafe is thriving thanks to the new occupants Olivier and Cassy Letrone.

Restoration of downstairs First aid room and change rooms are moving forward after sustaining a lot of water damage when the roof was removed upstairs.

The fit out of the new bar was an interesting project and the bar and lounge have been operating well since the reopening with the help of a lot of volunteers and Calven Seng (Bar Manager). With only a few little teething problems, we have already held some successful events at the club in the new facilities such as the Grand Opening, New Year’s Eve and the Casino Royal fundraiser. Thanks to Carlo Tenaglia for reintroducing Chase the Ace and a new interactive Quiz on the big screens on Friday nights.

I want to again thank Karen Oliver and Jenny Ducasse in the office for the ongoing support and dealing with the day to day issues. Also a huge thanks to Gemma Nicholson for the awesome work on the venue hire and function packages (which is proving a huge success) to maximize the use of and income from our newly refurbished premises. A huge thanks to Alistair Cook and Laurie de Mamiel for their support throughout the year.

THANK YOU

MULLALOO SLSC 2016/17 ANNUAL REPORT 49

The club had another good year financially with a net surplus of $152,326 excluding “Grant Income”.

This year’s Statement of Financial Performance includes the item “Grant Income” to the value of $1,350,000 which was the total of the financial contributions from LotteryWest and the City of Joondalup towards the cost of the club refurbishment. The actual cost of the refurbishment - $1,850,220 - was capitalised and appears under “Fixed Assets - Leasehold Improvements” in the Notes to the Statement of Financial Position. The balance of the cost of refurbishment was paid from the Club’s savings and cash resources.

It should be remembered also, that the club has adopted the accrual accounting system and so there are a number of items for which cash has been expended, but the items have been capitalised and appear in the Notes to the Statement of Financial Position under “Fixed Assets” as either - Plant & Equipment, Office Furniture or IT Hardware. In previous years these costs would have been expensed through the Statement of Financial Performance.

Total income for the year was down, mainly due to the fact that the club was closed for refurbishment for a significant part of the year. Bar turnover was down as was the income from the hiring out of the facility, so too was interest received as the cash savings were utilised for the club refurbishment. Thanks to the amazing work of the Surf Shop staff, turnover from the sale of merchandise was only slightly down on last year as they endured various forms of makeshift accommodation to provide the members with the opportunity to purchase our wide variety of merchandise. Sponsorship income was down, however, as we didn’t have the opportunity to showcase our wonderful club to potential sponsors for the bulk of the year, this was to be expected.

Administration expenses, excluding depreciation, were trimmed by approximately $22,000, which is to be commended, however, the depreciation expense of $47,252, ultimately led to total administration costs exceeding those of the prior year. Coaching, competition, education, junior, youth and lifesaving sections all managed to find savings in their expenses.

Our Facilities expenses were trimmed in line with the reduction in income because of the bar and venue closure. Membership expenses were down mainly because our 2016/17 contribution to SLSWA was paid in March of the previous financial year as mentioned in the Finance Report of 2015/16.

It is a credit to the managers of all the various sections of the club that they managed to find savings in a year when requested to do so as our cash resources were stretched to pay for the refurbishment.

The club finished the year with cash resources of $251,112 as at 31 March 2017. The “Receivables” item in the Statement of Financial Position of $77,162 includes the City of Joondalup’s annual grant of $60,000 as well as $10,000 from a sponsor, Advance Formwork. Both these amounts have been received in the new financial year.

“Payables” includes a deposit paid by the new restaurant tenant of $18,425. This brings the reality of a brand new restaurant, to be completed this year, so much closer.

The club has had a huge year financially. It completed the club refurbishment on budget whilst still ensuring all the other sections of the club carried on as normal. The task for the future is to ensure that the investment made in the refurbishment contributes to the financial wellbeing of the club, not only in the near future but also in the long term.

My personal thanks go to Karen Oliver, whose attention to detail in preparing the monthly financials, is much appreciated. Karen’s quiet contribution to the running of the club over many years is to be commended. I will also miss Peg Davidson, who passed away in the last financial year. As a previous Registrar and Administrator of the Club for many years, Peg never failed to offer assistance or advice, and was still counting cash and helping out in the office well into her late eighties – RIP Peg.
