Spinners Rae Paterson, Nika Davis and Maree Baxter sell raffles at the recent Spinners Open Day.

SUCCESSFUL SPINNERSOn the 9th of April the Maniototo Spinners Club held a very successful open day that proved very popular with over a hundred visitors from as far afield as Gore, Oamaru, Wanaka and South Otago, and many more towns in the region. The Club, which is celebrating its 42nd Anniversary, was able to display activities including weaving, spinning, dyeing, tatting and knitting and seven traders from around the region were very busy demonstrating their wares.

“Our speakers included Tony Clark, Norma Manson, Jo Ryan, Bonnie Smith and Lorraine Cheyne and they gave very informative and often humourous talks on their special interests.

Special thanks to all who made the day so successful, including members, visitors, speakers, traders and guests. “

Ice ICE Baby!!!With its curling, skating and luge facilities, Naseby is New Zealand’s ‘Ice Capital’ and a family winter sports paradise.CurlingCurling is a sport in which players slide heavy, polished granite stones, also called “rocks”, across a sheet of ice towards a target area. Curling was invented in Scotland, with the first written reference to a contest coming from 1541. We use lighter weight wooden Bavarian ice stocks to teach curling basics.Ice SkatingThe outdoor refrigerated Maniototo Ice Rink opened in the early 1990s and was upgraded in 2010 and 2011. LugeThe first ice luge track in the Southern Hemisphere opened in June 2008 in Naseby. The track, a natural track is a variation of the more commonly known Olympic (artificial track) luge. Naseby Ice Adventure Park holds two five day holiday camps from Monday 16th to Friday 20th July (10am to 3pm) is suitable for those aged 8 years and older. It will include a luge race on 20th July (at 1pm). ICE CAMPEach day participants receive three instructed sessions, one each for curling, ice skating (figure skating or ice hockey) and luge and by the end of the week should be able to curl, skate and luge. Single day attendance is permitted. LUGE CAMPThis camp is suitable for those aged 10 years and older. Preference will be given to those who have luged before

and can attend all five days. The camp will include a race on 13th July (1pm) and there will also be races on 14th July (10am), 20th July (1pm) and 5th August (10am).

Racing is highly encouraged. Cost (incl. GST) – $150 (or $35/day)

INDOOR CURLING NATIONALSOne would wonder how it works that Naseby would be hosting nineteen teams in the Mens and Ladies Mixed Fours Australian Curling Nationals from the 7th to the 10th of June?

According to rink Manager, Ewan Kirk, “Since we (Maniototo) have the only dedicated rink in the Southern Hemisphere, the best ice and the best customer service (and friendly staff of course), it is the only (and best) choice.”

Spectators are welcome for free. Enjoy quality curling from our warm lounge/bar from approx 9am-9pm.

Finals will be held on the Sunday with times to be confirmed.

The winner of the event becomes the team to represent Australia in world events

So, especially if you’ve never seen high level curling before, head to Maniototo Curling International in Naseby for the Australian Indoor Curling Nationals!

OUR CREATIVE COMMUNITYThe Maniototo Community Arts Council is an enthusiastic and motivated group of local volunteers charged with running the Maniototo Arts Centre in Reade Street, Ranfurly.

The Maniototo Arts Centre was the brain child of then Maniototo Board Member and Councellor, Edna McAtamney and was, in fact, the first Community Arts council to be formed in New Zealand! The council was formed first and then fundraised for a physical creative ‘hub’. A building, which was originally the workshop of Ray Hunter (All Trades), was found to be ideal. The CODC bought it and, after its refurbishment, was opened by Graham Gordon (CEO of the South Island Regional Arts Council of NZ) on the 23rd March 1983.

Why do we have an arts council and what do we do? f Responsible for overseeing the use of the Art Centre. f Encourage, promote and support development of

arts and culture in the Maniototo. f To create opportunities for the wider community

to be engaged and exposed to creative pursuits that would not otherwise be accessible to people in Maniototo. Such as workshops, tutors, theatre, and performances.

f Advocacy by promoting our local artists and their unique talents.

f Working alongside and supporting other art groups and initiatives.

f Promote Maniototo’s identity in the Arts Sector and

recognise that art and culture play an important role in the health and wellbeing of our community.

f Maniototo Arts Council supports the objectives of the Central Otago Arts Strategy 2013.

Our Art CentreWe are privileged to have great facilities (owned by the CODC). Visiting tutors often comment on how fantastic they are to work in. There are a range of spaces within the complex with small meeting room, kitchen, workroom, big room with dancing floor and bar. Storage spaces available for users. The building is getting well used, however it has still the capacity to utilised more. It is available for casual hire and meeting ties.It is used for more than just arts - in recent years it has taken on more of a cultural activities focus with groups such as karate, tai chi, line-dancing, spinners and knitters, Central Otago REAP, ceramics and artist groups are regular users of the premises.

Duck shooting weekend turned out a reasonably pleasant weekend with good duck numbers in most mai mais. Kiwi music month proved popular throughout May, nice to play our talented NZ bands and solo artists.

On a brighter note, a huge thank you to all the teams taking part, supplying raffles and supporting Burn for the ‘Believe it or Not’ quiz evenings on Wednesdays at the Ranfurly Hotel. It is very much appreciated. The team rivalry for top honours on the night is still hotly contested, and lovely to see all teams achieving top results on various nights.

With the winter months ahead, keep us posted with your unofficial road reports if you are out and about and find conditions dicey. We appreciate the heads up and will gladly pass on the info to our listeners. We endeavour to keep you all well informed as to the road conditions throughout the Central Otago network. As for closures of schools, cancellations or postponements of

events, and happenings due to inclement weather, we can get your message out there, also check out the Burn facebook page for this information.

Keep warm and safe this month, take care when out and about on the roads, and remember to enjoy what the Maniototo has on offer over the coming winter months. Be it sport, recreation, indoor pursuits or the like. Check out the local Library, museums, curling, luge and skating rinks, or just enjoy a nice hot coffee at the local café’s on a sunny afternoon.

Royce (Branch Manager) along with his team of Ben and Jason are located at 4 Northland Street, Ranfurly, at the former site of Entire Plumbing.

The boys have been busy with a huge variety of domestic, rural and commercial work, including commencing the initial groundwork on the new Maniototo Hospital.

With winter here, now is a great time to look at ensuring your spouting, drains and downpipes are all clear, your roof is free of any leaks, and dripping or leaking tapware is all fixed. It’s also a great time to service your gas heating or cooking systems and diesel boilers.

If your property is going to be empty for a period of time over winter, considering ‘winterising’ it to protect from unforeseen issues, such as frozen or burst pipework due to frost. This involves draining all the water from the pipework in the property, opening taps, turning the mains off and putting antifreeze into the traps. There are also things we can do to your gas califont, to prevent it from bursting.

Out and about

Anton Hood and his mentor, Phil Flanagan of Naseby, successfully participated in the recent Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge. In total the event raised over $2.2m for leukaemia and blood cancer.

At the recent International Test between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Jordan, held in Jordan’s capital-Amman, two one-time Maniototo residents played for the Saudi side. Although they lost 25:13, the’ Waipiata’ pair Peter Heron (was the Principal of Maniototo Area School) and son William enjoyed the game immensely and William looks forward to his next game against Bahrain.

Hayes – an iconic summer attraction It’s been another great summer for Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead which has seen many thousands turn up its windmill dotted driveway to visit the authentic, innovative workshop, sun dried brick abodes or to simply rest a while at Hannah’s Café with coffee and cake. From cyclists, to school groups, farmers, engineers, and campers not to forget the hugely supportive group of locals, the Hayes historic site has provided a stopping place and a place to reflect on our farming heritage for an increasingly wide audience.

The final public operating day for the season, on the 1 April 2018, saw 150 people witness the belts and pulleys roll into action at the works led by local Ken Gillespie. Tunes rang out from the Valley Bluegrass band from Dunedin and the Maniototo Spinners and Weavers group showed their skills and woolly wares.

The four public operating days this season have featured live blue grass music and wire straining demonstrations with a mix of esteemed local artists, from painters, wire workers, steam punk art to jewellers, and spinners who have shown their arts and crafts on-site. As part of ‘Arts on the Rail Trail’ summer events, Hayes Engineering Works was lucky to have Clyde based junk artist, Sean Boyd, exhibiting his sculptures and steam punk style lamps at the Hayes homestead and café parlour, through March and April.

The Hayes staff would like to thank everyone who has supported and visited the site this season with a special thanks to local café goers and operators up and down the rail trail. Knowing that people appreciate and promote this significant heritage site helps keep it alive.

We look forward to seeing you next season and further developing events and story sharing at Hayes – one of the birthplaces of kiwi ingenuity.

Hayes Engineering works will be closed for the winter months from June 1 – 1 September 2018. Open again 1 September - May 2018.

The Hayes Engineering team.

Sheep Measles information for Pet dog and Pig dog ownersWhat is “Sheep Measles”?It’s the common name given to lesions in sheep and goats caused by a developmental stage of the tapeworm, Taenia ovis. Dogs act as host for the tapeworm. Why is Sheep Measles important? While sheep measles does not cause disease in humans, the cysts in the meat are considered undesirable by consumers. Each year farmers suffer financial loss as a result of lambs being condemned or downgraded for sheep measles. How is the infection spread?Dogs become infected by eating raw sheep or goat meat (including the heart) infected with live cysts. A tapeworm develops in the intestine of the dog in approximately 35 days. Infected dogs pass many thousands of eggs in their faeces contaminating pasture grazed by sheep and goats. What has this got to do with me?Anyone taking dogs onto sheep pasture has a responsibility to ensure their dogs are not spreading sheep measles and contaminating pasture. Ensure that you pick up any faeces from your dog to prevent the risk of spreading sheep measles. How can I stop the spread of Sheep Measles?Freeze any sheep or goat meat fed to dogs (-10c for 10 days) or cook meat thoroughly before feeding to dogs, this will destroy any cysts. All offal should be cooked thoroughly or frozen the same as meat before feeding to dogs.Dose any dogs, MONTHLY if they will be going onto sheep pasture. Dogs should be treated with a worming product containing the ingredient Praziquantel which kills any tapeworms present. Packet labels should be read to ensure correct dose rates are used.I buy all my dog food from a vet clinic/retailer/supermarket. Is this ok?Dog biscuits and dog roll (because it has been through a cooking process) are safe as are dry meal and tinned foods. Any sheep off-cuts from the butchery cannot be guaranteed, this meat should be frozen or cooked before feeding to dogs. What meats can be safely fed to a dog raw?Meat from horses, rabbits and possums can be fed raw. Beef should be cooked thoroughly or frozen at -10°c for 10 days in order to reduce the spread of another bug called Neospora.

JOANNE DEAKER Advertorial

Images are powerful. Creating drawings and paintings is a uniquely human activity. It helps us ‘see’ what is there in the moment (either physically or in our imagination). Humans have derived joy from this process throughout the ages and you can share in this too. Drawing, like reading and writing is a skill that anyone and everyone is capable of learning…and this includes you…you just have to want to.

‘Drawing for Everyone Online’ is designed to teach you the basic skills of drawing. Created and run by professional artist, Joanne Deaker, this membership based course takes you though a series of projects from learning to draw a simple object to drawing more and more complex ones. In the process you learn all the skills of drawing in a fun and sequential way.

The full course (‘active’ participation) includes videos, written instructions with pictures, live streamed video reviews, a private facebook group, direct feedback on projects and the ability to ask and have questions answered. It will run over term 3 of the school year, beginning on 23rd July 2018, with registrations taken from Friday 15th June. It is suitable for both adults and mature children (10+).

This will be the first ever series of what is a unique drawing course created to help empower the wider community with art (by being online), whilst still having a connection between participants and between teacher and pupils. Joanne says “I believe in the power of images to uplift and empower: not only in the final image, but in the process of image creation and it is this joy of creation that I love to share.”

Joanne has received funding from the CODC Creative Communities Scheme and elsewhere so that she is able to launch this inaugural course and offer it at an extremely affordable cost. For more information see www.joannedeaker.co.nz/draw.html

Federated Farmers Conference The Federated Farmers of New Zealand High Country Conference was held in Cromwell over the 17th and 18th of May. After a field trip from Matakanui to Bendigo Stations on the Thursday, presentations were made by New Zealand Walking Access Commission (NZWAC), Otago Regional Council, Federated Farmer of New Zealand (FFNZ), QEII National Trust, Molesworth Station, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and Land information New Zealand (LINZ).

Land Information New Zealand has now publicly announced the creation of a high country advisory group to help make better decisions for New Zealand’s high country regions. Speaking at this year’s conference, Linz deputy chief executive of Crown property, Jerome Sheppard said, “Linz needed the group because of the complications and debates around the tenure review process and the influx of tourists in the country.”

The NZWAC outlined the body of work undertaken by Asher Goldman (Communications Manager) studying access in the South Island High Country. The report was a response to increased pressure of rapidly increasing tourist numbers particularly from Mackenzie Country down through Queenstown Lakes and across to the Waitaki and Central Otago. Feedback on the report is currently being reviewed.

Wilding pines and wallabies were also on the agenda. Sherman Smith from Ministry for Primary Industries outlined the business case to gain continued funding for ongoing conifer control through to 2030. Rapid spread of wilding pines is increasing in area and cost. Smith said, “Even the great, local community effort still can’t get us on top of it. We can’t stop.”

Some very passionate Federated Farm members voiced their concern at the rapid increase in numbers, questioning if Wallaby can cross bridges and dams from Canterbury. Smith acknowledged that there seems no quick fix to the issue but acknowledged the great work being done with Maniototo Pest Control, Environment Canterbury, MPI and Otago Regional Council in planning control.

Molesworth Station Steering Committee Chair, James Guild responded to the overwhelming feedback from public consultation. From the survey circulated there had been over 7000 responses via phone and email (which actually crashed the website). As public conservation land, Molesworth Station is now a model for how conservation, farming and recreation can go hand in hand.

CLACHANBURN COMMENT What a wonderful autumn we have all enjoyed with mostly good weather, little wind and the most gorgeous intense colours, but now it is all over, leaves raked up, hose away and taps lagged.

The last visitors in the cottage came from Queensland about a week ago. When they booked I said it may be too cold for you, no they said they have been to CO before and love the seasons, and loved the look of the cottage fireplace. They were gardeners, but like many, were unfamiliar with the medlar tree in the orchard and wanted to know about it. I explained it was a member of the rose family, a medieval tree dating back to the roman times. A little known tree today, more shrub like than tree like, but with fascinating fruit, like a large rose hip, which when bletted (allowed to ripen until turning soft and brownish) it is ready to make medlar jelly. This bletting is best to be allowed to take place on the tree and frost helps the process. So yesterday was the big day, and as it is low in pectin I added chopped up lemons while cooking, then used jam setting sugar which contains pectin too. The end result is a pale-ish coloured jelly with a distinguished flavour, different from apple or quince and quite lovely, and fun to try something different.

I am sometimes asked about presenting jams and pickles for the local shows, so thought I would share some pointers with exhibitors.

Judges generally judge by elimination, so the first thing to consider is presentation.

Is the jar clean, the label straight, the name correctly spelt and preferably the date of the product, and is the jar full? When filling the jar the contents which must be hot, should come up to ½ cm from the top of the jar or bottle. As the preserve cools it will shrink a little and form a vacuum which is what we want when we use metal lids. When using cellophane the contents will shrink a little also. It is undesirable to have a large airspace which encourages the growth of mould. A few pointers include:

Bottling fruit – a vacuum must be formed and the metal screw band removed before judging. The judge can lift the jar by holding the seal and, if it comes off, the entry is eliminated. Only good quality fruit should be used, evenly graded, packed neatly, cooked but not overcooked which results in the fruit rising in the jar and in evidently leaving sediment at the bottom of the jar.

Jam/Marmalade – fruit should be evenly distributed in the jar, the colour should be bright and not over cooked which cause it to be dark and even gluey, the fruit size should be even and of a soft consistency and a flavour true to fruit type.

CASA NOVA Naseby Museum

Casa Nova is a stately home near Oamaru built in 1861 by early run holder John Borton who emigrated to New Zealand from Oxfordshire, England, 1849. He went over to the Australian goldfields three years later then returned to North Otago the following year, purchasing a run which had originally belonged to Mr. A. C. Strode, his brother-in-law. He entered in a partnership with Mr Anthony McMasters and besides other land they owned Maerewhenua and Tokarahi estates stocking them with the best merino sheep blood lines.

He married Miss Mary Every of Anderson’s Bay and built the Casa Nova homestead 1861.

Mrs Borton died 1880 and in 1881 there was a large sale of the homestead goods and chattels. He did not remarry, dying in 1916 aged 90 years.

His sister Emily was married to Mr. A. C. Strode and their only son, William, married Elizabeth Marslin, Naseby. They remained in the Maniototo and a son Harold following WW1, was manager of Kyeburn Station, then later mayor of Naseby.

It can only be assumed that the ornate porcelain toilet bowl on display in the Maniototo Early Settlers museum, Naseby, was purchased by Mrs. Emily Strode at the 1881 sale.

Jellies – a bright light colour is desirable, and so clear that print can be read through the jar. The consistency should not be stiff, but rather soft so that it quivers when moved, but not so soft that it collapses and weeps. Again it should have a fresh fruit flavour.

Pickles/Relishes – are more difficult to judge because of the variety in type and seasonings used. A balance in texture and flavour is the aim. The fruit or vegetable should always be cooked but not until it loses its form, and the consistency neither too thick or too thin.

Tomato Sauce – should have a good colour, and tomato flavour, of a good pouring consistency but not too watery, and not separate out on standing.

Best results are achieved when batch size is small. It is essential for exhibitors to read the schedule carefully. When I judge I always explain to the steward (s) what I am looking for, and why I come to the decision I do so they can relay this to the exhibitors, especially young keen entrants who can benefit from this knowledge. Enjoy your preserving and have fun showing it too.

Happy winter days, Jane
