David Dodd

This edition of Cen-tral Vets Animal Health update dis-cusses two aspects of Veterinary Prac-tice in the Maniototo over the last 30 years we have been here.

The first concerns improvements that have made life easier on vets and safer on animals and the second has both good and disap-pointing elements with a sheep disease that is important to all sheep farmers.

When we opened we had a simple anesthetic machine (some vet clinics didn’t have one at all). For dogs and cats there were only a handful of injectable anaesthetics and most had downsides – some were irritable if you missed the vein and some animals had excitement while awaken-ing.

These days we have ex-hospital trolleys with both halo-thane and isofluorane vaporizers with monitors that check oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart and respi-ration rate. We have lots of options now to sedate and quickly wake up, give short I/V anaesthetics with quick and calm wakeup and multi hour anaesthetics. Anaes-thetics have never been safer for your much loved pet, or your New Zealand Champion Sheepdog.

On the large animal side of the business we have been battling Brucella Ovis infection in rams over our 30 years. When we arrived Kate was the ram queen who did most of the palpating and blood testing. She found Brucellosis in approximately 30% of flocks in the Maniototo.

Brucella ovis is a venereal disease that mainly affects ram fertility leading to poor and spread out lambing. An ac-creditation programme for ram breeders guaranteed their sale rams were free of disease but if the older rams at home were diseased the new ones invariably caught it when mixed for mating.

Over the years, by palpating then blood testing if infection was present, we cleared Brucellosis from dozens of flocks in the area. Every year we find one or two flocks still in-fected – most have never been palpated but a few had been clear until a neighbors infected ram got in!!

The disappointing aspect of the disease is there are few wild/feral rams running around the area to harbour infec-tion and if we could palpate ALL ram flocks (then blood test to clear) we could forget about Brucellosis in sheep forever. While the current situation is pleasing compared with where we started at, I’d love to know we had wiped out Brucellosis before I retire!!

So if you have never had your rams palpated, humour me and ring so we can check yours!!

THE FUTURE FOR ARTS IN THE MANIOTOTO Janet Andrews

The Maniototo Community Arts Council is looking for new members. This is the request from the Chairperson, Janet

Andrews. Janet will retire from this position at the Maniototo Community Arts Council Annual General Meeting which is to be held on 18 April 2013.

Having been a member of the council for many years Janet feels it is more than time to leave it to somebody else. Some of the members who have been on the council for similar lengths of time will also be retiring. New faces, new ideas and some 'get up and go' is what the Arts Council really needs.

In the past the Arts Council members have been representatives from the various groups using the Arts Centre. This is not neces-sary if groups cannot find a willing representative. Anyone who has a genuine interest in the arts would be very welcome. You need not necessarily be an artist. The main aim of the Arts Council is to promote the arts in the Maniototo.

If you have energy and a keen interest in the arts please contact someone on the Arts Council such as Janet Andrews, Cindy Albert or Norma Manson and tell them of your interest. You will be made most welcome and we promise that you will be not given an offi-cial position immediately if you offer to be a member. If you are interested, please step forward. The Arts Council meets quar-terly.

Funding for arts initiatives The Creative New Zealand Com-munity Scheme supports and encourages groups and individu-als, within the community, by providing funding for projects

which are termed "the arts ". Under the scheme this is defined as "all forms of creative and interpretive expression".

Should some help be required, regarding funding for such a pro-ject, please contact Amie Pont or Janet Andrews for further infor-mation. The grants are given out twice yearly and any group or individual can apply.

MANIOTOTO HEALTH SERVICES LTD Hospital Newsletter

Did you know that the Maniototo Hospital also provides a unique rural Maternity Service for the district?

I am Jill Crosbie and, as a Midwife I am on call and avail-able for urgent midwifery matters 24/7.

The Maternity Centre is open during the week when I am available to give information about maternity op-tions plus free pregnancy testing.

If you are looking for a Midwife it is important to choose someone that you can work with. Contact me for an obligation free chat to talk about my services.

We meet in the Maniototo Maternity Centre for ante-natal pregnancy check ups but can make home visits by prior arrangement. For pregnancies and births requiring additional support and input I work closely with the Pub-lic/Private Obstetricians and Midwives in Dunedin.

During your pregnancy we will work out the place of birth which can be either Charlotte Jean Maternity Hos-pital, Queen Mary Dunedin Hospital or Oamaru Hospital. If baby is in a hurry there is a Birthing Room in the Mani-ototo Hospital with all the necessary equipment on standby ready for a speedy birth. We no longer have planned births at Maniototo Hospital.

The postnatal journey continues with support and guid-ance if needed for confident parenting. I do daily home visiting initially and will continue to visit for up to six weeks. I travel throughout the Maniototo, Oturehua, Poolburn and the Upper Manuherikia.

Thanks to the support of community groups I have the use of a Cardiotocograph (CTG) machine which can check a baby’s well being by monitoring of its heart beat. This can save a journey to Dunedin hospital for the same test.

The local Plunket group have recently bought a TENS machine to help women cope with labour pains which I can loan to you free of charge. There has been a very positive response from the women who have used it.

I must also mention that I have two electric breast-pumps that have been put to very good use over the years. I can loan these out free of charge.

BLUE JEANS AND BALLADS

Picture a winter’s afternoon, a glass of Pinot Noir in your hand, your feet warming by the fire; or strong coffee and a hearty coun-try breakfast. How about deciding which decade your outfit will be from for the evening concert? Any, or all, of these scenarios will be part of the Bards, Ballads & Bulldust Festival in May.

Performers from throughout Australia and New Zealand will be celebrating the work of local poet Ross McMillan (aka Blue Jeans) - even turning some of his works to song.

The decision to move Bards, Ballads & Bulldust from Easter and spread it around the Maniototo is proving popular with the local establishments. Traditionally held at the Ancient Briton in Naseby, there will also be performances in the Naseby Royal Ho-tel, Danseys Pass Hotel, Ranfurly Hotel, Waipiata Country Hotel, Patearoa Tavern and Oturehua Railway Hotel. There will also be musterers’ and miners’ breakfasts and the main event, the ‘BACK IN THE DAY CONCERT AND DANCE’.

Bards & Ballads has traditionally celebrated the unique lifestyle of the musterer through songs and poetry and will now also cele-brate the discovery of gold in the area.

A full programme and entertainment details are available on line and will be covered in the April edition of Positively Maniototo.

MOVE TO HARDWARE NOT HARD AT ALL!

Moving to the Maniototo from Kent in England, where they worked for an Iranian/English family, was actually a logical choice for the new owners of the Maniototo Paint & Hardware business. Keith and Sheryl Edwards had already fallen in love with the area seven years ago when they bought a holiday home in Naseby.

On their big ‘OE’ they spent four years just out of Lon-don where Sheryl worked as a housekeeper and Keith kept the garden and provided maintenance for the fam-ily estate. They travelled extensively, visiting many countries in Europe.

Sheryl and Keith are originally from Timaru where Keith taught horticulture/science/technical for 24 years at Timaru Boys High School. Sheryl worked for a Physio-therapist and as a Pharmacy Assistant. They have three grown-up children. The two youngest were heavily in-volved in rowing and Keith coached and refereed soc-cer.

With Keith’s background as a qualified cabinetmaker and horticulturalist they bring a diverse set of skills to the Maniototo. They are very keen to work in with local DIYers and tradesmen to help them source product lo-cally – saving trips out of town and encouraging local business development.

“Whenever a local person has to go out of town to buy something they will also buy a pie maybe, get some petrol, buy groceries, grab a milkshake. That’s all money going out of our community.”

Their range of products & services already includes: Glass repairs and cutting Tools

Cabinetmaking Paint Garden and Gifts Hardware Electrical materials Plumbing Bucket and brooms Flexi tubs Camping and Fishing gear Kitchenware Window accessories Curtain tracks

Keith and Sheryl encourage you to ask if there’s some-thing they could stock or could order in specially.

For those of you who remember the building of old - what was the old office is now a garden and giftware department – and you’re allowed to go in!

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT SATURDAYS

Following the Chinese Buffet evening (from 6pm) on Saturday March 2nd, the band ‘JUST THE 5 OF US’ will be playing country music at the Ranfurly Hotel. Members of the band have played at the Golden Guitar Awards.

On the 23rd of March Middle Earth from Cromwell returns to the Maniototo and then on the 13th of April ‘ROCK BACK BILLY’ will be in town - a bit of the Beetles, Blondie, CCR & Eagles.

All LIVE entertainment starts at 8pm.

HIGHLANDERS CREATE GREAT EXCITEMENT IN THE MANIOTOTO Ever had breakfast with an Otago Highlander? How many Weetbix did he eat? How about walked to school with one? Well last week that’s exactly what happened to over 20 Maniototo Area School students and their families.

An initiative by local All Black and Highlanders rugby player Andrew Hore, Highlanders Management and MAS led to this once in a lifetime opportunity.

At a community BBQ at the Maniototo Rugby Club on the 25th of February families were allocated their Highlander ‘son’ to stay for two whole nights! According to some Mums the players ‘said’ they didn’t eat very much … not true though.

Principal David Hunter said at a school assembly the next day that ‘there are two types of people in this world. Those who say they’re going to do something and those who do it’ and was so pleased the idea for Maniototo families to host the Highlanders had become a reality.

After assembly each classroom hosted 3-4 Highlanders each. Positively Maniototo was there to capture the fun.

Mitchell Duncan, Riley Thompson, Will Duffy and Anna Clarke don their Highlanders Jerseys.

Brylee Hazlett, Hayden Pringle and Thomas Inder with Colin Slade

Jo Wheeler and Josh Bekhuis read with the Kakariki Class. Hunter Menzies-Cook and Mia Steel crack up Jamie McIntosh with their version of Gangnam Style.

COMMUNITY CORNER

Naseby has been enjoying the summer weather. Several weddings and some family occasions have brought extra visitors to Naseby and all the accommodation and food places have been busy.

The Swimming Dam remains popular with swimmers enjoy-ing clearer water than usual at this time of the year. Before it was filled more concrete was laid by the Lions Club of Maniototo (and helpers), crusher dust was spread and a channel formed to direct the incoming water across the dam.

The Naseby Bowling Club is pleased to have its greens back in use. Bangers and Bowls on a Tuesday night is proving popular. For more information talk to any bowling club member.

The Naseby & Surrounding Goldfields 150th Jubilee commit-tee is working through the ‘tidying up’ phase. This is the last chance to organise a jubilee paver.

If you’ve been thinking about it, there will be one more session shortly so it’s important to get your information to Phil Flanagan or Marilyn Swinbourn as soon as possible.

Social Fun Curling will commence on March 7th and will run on Thursday evenings from 7-9pm. Entry is $5 per game and teams are drawn on the night. Social Fun Curling is open to all styles, all levels (from novice to expert) and all ages. There will be supper and prizes plus novelty fun curl-ing games such as Shanghai Curling & Scotch Doubles. Just come along on the night for as long and as much fun as you like!

The MCI Doubles are coming up over the 22nd-24th March - get your entry in now by calling Jo at the rink on 4449878.

Danseys Pass Hotel is proud to be supporting the new Maniototo-wide event ‘Bards, Ballads & Bulldust’ in May.

The Gimmerburn history book is well underway and looking at a launch in April. Community Cup planning is about to get underway for later this year. It aims to be another great, fun-filled, family day out!

Ranfurly has had its busiest week of the year (see front page) and now boasts two new town entry signs (page 10).

There have been some footpaths replaced and the pool reports a good attendance.

If you haven’t tried yet, tune in to 87.9FM and see if you get better local radio reception.

We thought it was ‘worth a go’ but unfortunately the idea of a Car Boot Produce Buy Sell & Swap did not get much support. A big thank you to Joyce Greer for turning up on Saturday 9th of Feb with an array of goodies in-cluding eggs, veges and apricot jam. Joyce’s jam proved particularly popular. No one turned up with goods to sell on the 16th. It’s possible that people felt they did not have enough to warrant sitting in the car for a couple of hours but with a bit of tweaking the idea might work as a fundraiser. Perhaps an enterprising local community group could man a stall and sell donated produce. Over to you.

Congratulations to Lachie Edwards and Andrea Voyce for being elected as Head Boy and Head Girl of Mani-ototo Area School. This is a great achievement and an acknowledgement by your peers and community of your ability to represent your school.

ANNOUNCERS INVITED Burn 729AM/87.9FM is owned and run by the Mani-ototo community. For 20 years it has relied on wonder-ful volunteers to keep the local content on air. If you would like to come and help out please contact Quentin on 444 9729. We provide training and you don’t need to have any experience except the will to help your com-munity keep connected.

NEW TOWN SIGNAGE FOR RANFURLY A Project Maniototo and University of Otago project to re-place existing signage on the approach to Ranfurly has com-pleted its first stage. Michael Findlay from the Applied Sci-ences / Design Department recommended the signs to be designed by a colleague in Australia, Dr Stuart Medley.

Medley is the designer for Hidden Shoal Recordings, a criti-cally acclaimed record label with a roster of international artists. His illustrations gained international recognition through Deanne Cheuk’s Neomu magazine. He is the author of The Picture In Design, a book about how pictures commu-nicate depending on how realistic they are. Medley was the editor of SiC BAG comics, now in the Michael Hill Collection at the Australian National Library. He currently lectures in graphic design in Australia.

The brief was to highlight the towns ‘retro’ feel as well as the location of Ranfurly.

The sign on the approach from Wedderburn plays on the established cycle market.

Another sign is located at By Pass Road and is a hint of the vehicles of the era. The Maniototo is fast becoming a popu-lar classic vehicle rally route.

Initially the signs included a variety of information covering what to do and where to go in Ranfurly. However, upon working in with Opus and B Design of Roxburgh it became clear that less was more. The decision was made to include our local radio station frequencies so visitors will tune in to Burn and find out all they need to know!

Project Maniototo would like to thank the University of Otago, Opus International, B Design, Maniototo Paint & Hardware and the land owners for their assistance with this project.

A WARM WELCOME

‘Meet Maniototo’ is a Rural Women New Zealand Mani-ototo Branch initiative where we like to welcome new people who move to the area.

Sometimes it can be difficult joining a new community where you don’t know anyone. Often you’re unsure where to find the information to join in with local ac-tivities, events or groups. We can make it easier with a visit from a neighbour or a member of our group.

Maniototo Rural Women along with the help of Pro-ject Maniototo have ‘tweaked’ the Central Otago Dis-trict Council’s Welcome Pack. It includes all the rele-vant information for new people to get to know con-tacts for various groups and services available here in the Maniototo.

Throughout the year we will hold ‘Meet Maniototo’ events where newcomers can come along for coffee and sweet treats, meet other newcomers and locals and make some friends.

We need your help! Please contact us when you know of someone who has moved to your neighbourhood or area so we can arrange for one of our members to make a friendly visit with baking or meals and give them one of the Welcome Packs. Let’s all help make them feel welcome to the Maniototo.

Please contact Debbie Paterson on 444 9280 or email [email protected] if you know of someone who requires a welcome to the Maniototo!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Award winning Chef Scott Richardson is based in Invercar-gill and can be seen on CUE TV bringing viewers his own cook-ing show. Scott takes time out of his busy schedule to give us a recipe exploring locally available crayfish. Summer Salad with Koura (Fresh Water Crayfish)

6 Koura (Fresh water crayfish or other crustacean) 1 T Horopito (Maori Pepper or cracked black pepper) 1 bunch water cress or rocket 1 pottle cherry tomatoes 1 piece of goat’s cheese 6 dried pears 1 piece of watermelon 12 snow peas cut into strips

Herb and Honey Dressing

50mls honey (Bennie’s Creamed) 150mls grape-seed oil 50mls lemon juice

Dust the Koura with the horopito and set aside to allow the flavour to infuse.

BBQ or pan fry the koura till just cooked they will turn a light pink. Cool.

In a bowl placed the washed watercress and the cherry tomatoes which have been cut in half.

Slice the dried pears and crumble the cheese add this to the bowl with the watermelon which has been cut into cubes and the sliced snow peas.

Toss these all together.

Mix all the dressing ingredient together, moisten the ingre-dients in the bowl with a little of the dressing check the seasoning.

Spoon the salad into the presentation bowl top with the cooked Koura. Lastly drizzle over some more of the dress-ing. Did you know?

The Southern koura is found only in the east and south of

the South Island and on Stewart Island. They reach lengths

of about 80 millimetres. Koura occupy freshwater streams,

lakes, rivers and swamps.

Koura use their four pairs of walking legs to move and

when alarmed can flick their tail forwards violently to pro-

pel themselves backwards at speed in order to avoid any

threat. The koura's first pair of legs are pincers that are

used for scavenging, food and warding off predators or

other koura.

Jane Falconer presents her CLACHANBURN COMMENT

We are now getting cooler mornings and as I walk around the garden and see the autumn cyclamen and crocuses flower they are a reminder that our autumn is upon us. It is time to think about spring bulbs, and they are now available. Whether you buy a few special ones, or buy in bulk they are good value for money and do multiply over the years.

The local A & P show had a very good horticultural section which I always enjoy, and admire the exhibitors who manage their entries with skill whatever the season. It is one thing to grow plants and vegetables for your own enjoyment but quite another thing to show them to a high standard. The preserving and baking were very good too and it is great to see new and younger entrants.

A garden visitor was interested in evergreen ground covers so I thought I would mention a few which grow well here – Pachysandra, epimedium, ericas, hebes, mahonia, winter roses, lithospermums and low spreading conifers. Some are happy in dry shade and others require more sun or moisture, but all help in weed control and most flower.

A few of us visited the Lavender farm in the Danseys Pass recently when it was flowering at its best. The bright purple gate greets you and rows of lavender spread out on either side. There are different varieties and all were looking good. It was a hot day and we sat on a seat eating lavender ice creams which we were a bit dubious about but they were lovely. For a moment we thought we could have been in France! They produce lavender oil, and last year won an award for the best Grosso oil in NZ, and almost at our back door and well worth visiting.

Happy gardening Jane

COAST TO COAST SUCCESS Born in ‘the good old Ranfurly Hospital and loved every min- ute of school at Maniototo Area School’, Jimmy Pyle (29) has played rugby and cricket his whole life. He currently lives in the Ida Valley farming and contracting, operating his own business specialising in spraying, precision drilling and direct drilling in the Maniototo/Ida/Manuherikia valleys.

Last month he undertook the Speight’s Coast to Coast. Positively Maniototo flicked him an email to find out just what it took to get there!

PM: Congratulations Jimmy. Was this your first time doing the Speight’s Coast to Coast and how long have you been training for? JP: Cheers and yes. I started just after Duck Shooting

2012.

PM: What did you do for training? JP: I started doing Tribe Fit (gym class) at NRG Health and

Fitness as well as weights. I started learning to paddle as my experience in a kayak was zero. An injury dur-ing rugby season halted my running until about De-cember. I started road biking in October and around Christmas was biking 200 km a week, only running about 20km a week and kayaking as much as I could. Kayaked the Clutha for the first time in January and loved it! During January my training was more focused towards endurance. I ran on river beds as getting used to river crossings and boulder hopping is impor-tant for good prep before the Coast to Coast. My fa-vourite run was at New Year in Hawea where I ran up the Dingleburn on the DOC track and river! Awesome! I also started running more off my bike so my legs were used to it (they feel like dead rubber after bik-ing) .

PM: What were the distances you had to run/cycle on the ‘Coast’?

JP: Run Beach to Kumara: 3km, Cycle Kumara to Aickens Corner: 55km, Run Aickens to Klondyke Corner: 33km, Bike Klondyke to Mt White Bridge: 15km, Kayak Wai-makiriri 67km, Bike Woodstock to Sumner: 70km. To-tal: 243km

PM: Best moment (other than crossing the finish line at the end)?

JP: Finishing the mountain run… its brutal! Also seeing Steve Gurney, he was standing on a boulder in the middle of the Deception river watching competitors pass by. It was really random but super cool!

PM: Worst moment? JP: Exhaustion during the mountain run, (Dizziness, cramp

and uncontrollable laughter!) Was in a bad way but ate a couple of bars and some energy gel and came right!

PM: What went through your head when you did cross the finish line?

JP: Was certainly stoked but couldn’t help the thought of being not quite satisfied! (I can do it faster)!!

PM: Anyone you’d like to thank? JP: Support crew. Keets, Jase, Janey, Sharls and Mum

were absolutely amazing! Tents packed up and away to the first transition areas both mornings by 4.30am! Super organised and they handled my moods with ease, amazing! Chantel Knox has helped a lot with training and advice I strongly rec-ommend seeing her if you want to get fit!

Jimmy also enjoys scuba diving when he’s not training and, as a true kiwi bloke, his favourite food is salt and vinegar chips!

And his favourite quote:

“Not that into quotes but I do believe that if you dream of doing something (anything at all) you can achieve it if you want it bad enough!!”

Good on ya mate!
