Thank youElizabeth and Dickson Andrews would like to thank all friends and family who acknowledged their Diamond Wedding by sending cards, phone calls and visits. We did appreciate your kind thoughts We have been very lucky to achieve this milestone and celebrate this special occasion.

Elizabeth would also like to thank those who sent cards, food and visited her after her operation in Dunedin Hospital. Again, your concern and kindness was very much appreciated.

Letter to the EditorIs it just my imagination, or is there more rubbish lying around the Maniototo recently?

If you are one of the litterers, please stop doing it.

Do you realize that, by the time (y)our kids are adults, WKHUH ZLOO EH PRUH UXEELVK WKDQ ȴVK LQ WKH VHD E\weight? What a world to inherit! China and India are SRXULQJ WRQQHV RI UXEELVK LQWR WKH RFHDQV 3(5DAY!

7KHUHLVDOUHDG\DȵRDWLQJLVODQGRIUXEELVKLQWKH3DFLȴFthat is bigger than many countries.

Littering may seem like a petty issue in the still, relatively, clean, green Maniototo, but it is a huge problem worldwide.

If we continue to tolerate the litterers among us, it won’t be too long before we lose our unspoilt, pristine image.

6R LI \RXDUHDGHFHQW FDULQJKXPDQEHLQJDQG\RXsee litter, please pick it up. You may think to yourself, “Why should I pick up after someone else?”, and quite rightly so. But if you don’t pick it up, who will? Certainly QRWWKHSLQKHDGZKRGURSSHGLWLQWKHȴUVWSODFH7KHcouncil can pay contractors to pick it up, then we all end up paying for the grubby habits of, hopefully, a small percentage of the population.

Be a tidy Kiwi used to be a common mantra. It is high time it was resurrected.

If you do suspect that your pony has foundered (or is close), then please call one of our Vets to come and see them.

Another problem we see as the spring months progress and the grass dries out, is the increase of grass seed problems – mainly in longer haired dogs. To mitigate this problem we recommend clipping back the longer hair – in some cases we can get away with just a basic paw and ear clip (the removal of hair leaves the grass seeds with nothing to gain traction with to gain entry into the body cavities!), but in many cases we have people opting for a whole body clip. CLACHANBURN COMMENT I think we are all hoping for a good spring, farmers and gardeners alike, and with good moisture in the soil it will be good for planting trees. The other day I had a call re pruning a large willow in a town garden, and yes we love a summer shade tree, but it reminded me right plant in the right place!!

When young it is lovely and little trouble, but it grows and grows, which brings to mind the pruning and JHWWLQJ ULG RI WKHPDWHULDO 6R ΖȇG OLNH WR UHFRPPHQGsome deciduous trees which are suitable for smaller gardens – they include the Malus and Prunus trees, both have lovely blossoms and autumn colours, and the malus of crab apples bear fruit which can be made into MHOO\ <RXFDQVHOHFWHDUO\RU ODWHUȵRZHULQJYDULHWLHVso if you have room for several consider that, to have blossom over a longer period. A small weeping willow is the Kilmarnoch and it is attractive and knows how to behave. In a sheltered spot you may consider a maple tree, and there are many smaller ones to choose from. ΖQ6SULQJΖFDQȇWZDLWWRJHWLQWRWKHQXUVHU\DQGDIHZdays ago I did, and came home with a small tree to plant DWDQHQWUDQFHWRWKHVKUXEEHU\ΖFKRVHD5RELQLD/DFHLady, a slow growing tree which ultimately can grow to three metres, but can be pruned. It has fragrant white ZLVWHULD OLNH ȵRZHUV LQ 6SULQJ XQXVXDO FXUOLQJ EULJKWgreen leaves, contorted branches provide interest in winter when it loses its leaves. I have the large Robinia

pseudoacacia Ȇ)ULVLDȇZKLFKJURZVZHOOKHUHVRWKLVZLOOtoo, but does require some shelter.

Down at the farm entrance some very old and damaged willows came out, which were planted a very long time DJR DORQJ WKH HGJHV RI 6WRQH\ FUHHN:H KDG DQ RQsite family meeting, which was fun, and looking to the future generation, which is what planting large trees is all about, we have selected some Willows (the right place for them with plenty of space) including three golden weeping ones, Alders which also love dampness, a few Poplars, and well away from the creek a few groups of three Wellingtonias which will be huge long after I’ve gone, but are stately and will be excellent twelve months of the year. I have advised spraying one metre away from the trees, keeping grass well away GRHVKHOSWKHWUHHVJHWRWRDJRRGVWDUWDQGRIFRXUVHstaking and watering are equally important. I will enjoy watching their progress and hope those Deer are kept under control too. I have always said it is easy and any fool can cut a tree down, it is much harder and requires good husbandry to get trees to maturity.
