Dear parents, caregivers, students and friends of the school Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa Our students have made a very positive start to the year. Thank you for preparing them so well! It’s wonderful to see them so enthusiastic about everything Maidstone. At last week’s assembly the students were given an idea of some of the extra opportunities offered here. We had a performance from our Kapahaka group, a presentation on the MAD programme, and an explanation of Lunchtime sports. We encourage all students to take up something extra in their time at Maidstone. Occasionally at Assembly we recognise students who have been outstanding in demonstrating the Maidstone values. Last week Jordyn and Connor Vlas were recognised for their support of a new student. Well done Jordyn and Connor! It was lovely to see so many of you at the Meet the Teacher Evening last week. I hope it was helpful in giving you an idea of who we are and what is happening here at Maidstone. You will have learnt at the Meet the Teacher Evening that our theme for 2016 is ‘Enterprise”. This will be the context for Science, Social Studies and much of the literacy programme. There are some exciting events planned that you will hear about along the way. We are excited to be part of the Upper Hutt Cluster Initiative of ‘Student Agency and Engagement’. All schools in Upper Hutt are involved with the aim of improving learning outcomes for our city’s students. PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) is another project we are embarked upon in 2016. This will be a 3-5 year programme that will focus on creating the right environment for our students’ learning. As well as the learning developments, the board is beginning a building project. The Hard Materials and Visual Arts rooms are to get a complete refurbishment. The planning stage has just begun. Camps have begun this week with excellent weather for outdoor activities - I suspect there’ll be a lot of cooling off in the pool required. I have just been up to visit Gold Syndicate and they’re doing amazingly well! Settled in and busy with their activities - and the teachers are happy! Thank you to those who have made themselves available as parent help. Could you please make sure all forms are complete and returned to school, plus payment made in full or started on an AP. I’d like to personally thank the families who have thought to offer to sponsor an extra student who might otherwise be unable to go - this is very thoughtful of you and hugely appreciated by the recipients. If you or anyone else would like to sponsor a student to camp the account number is 12-3142-0319918-00 - please label it ‘Sponsored Camp’. We will be holding Parent Interviews on the 15th and 17th March. These are an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s learning in detail. How to use the on-line booking system for making appointments is set out on page 2. We look forward to seeing you there. Our School Wide Athletics Day is fast approaching. All students will be participating in this annual event. This year Maidstone’s Athletics Day is being held on Maidstone Intermediate’s School grounds. Events will commence at 9.30am and will be finished by 2.30pm. Throughout the day, students will be competing in:

Shotput

Discus

Vortex

Long Jump (finalists only)

High Jump (finalists only)

Track Events What to Wear:

Students will come to school either wearing their full PE uniform OR their PE shorts with a coloured t-shirt to support their syndicate. Ribbons, coloured hats and face paint may also be worn to match the syndicate colour. Face paint, however, needs to be applied at home and must NOT be

brought to school. Lunch, appropriate shoes, hats, sun screen, and a bottle of water will be essential, as students will be outside all day. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to come down to support their children. There will be a coffee cart available with a range of hot and cold beverages. We are looking forward to this year’s athletics day being held at Maidstone Intermediate – as well as looking forward to a fun and exciting day!

School Photos These are being taken on Friday 11 March by LC Scott. The envelopes with details on how to order these photos will come home next week, except for Red Syndicate who will receive theirs tomorrow. There are three packs that you can order one at $20.00, one at $25.00 and the other at $30.00. You can also place an order and make payment one-line using LCScott’s website. You can also make a Family Photo Order. These must be ordered either on photo day or before – these envelopes are available from the school office. A reminder that you cannot pay for photos through the school bank and account or by the school’s eftpos.

Newsletter Sponsorship We are looking for businesses to come on board with our newsletter and “Wheel of Fortune” sponsorship for 2016 . For a reasonable annual amount your business will reach almost 600 homes on a fortnightly basis for the year. Your money will also be used to fund prizes for the “Wheel of Fortune”, which is spun at Assembly every week to reward students who are showing our school values. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Sandra Smith in the school office on 528 3094.
