Board Report What is a decile rating? The Ministry of Education has just completed the latest round of decile ratings based on last year’s nationwide census. Maidstone Intermediate School’s decile rating is Six (6). I would like to assure you that the decile rating is not a measure of the performance of the school but is based on the socio-ecomonic diversity of our school community. A school’s decile rating indicates the extent to which it draws its students from low socio-economic communities. For example, Decile 1 schools are the 10 percent of schools with the highest proportion of students from low socio- economic communities, whereas decile 10 schools are the 10% of schools with the lowest proportion of these students. A decile does not indicate the overall socio-economic mix of the students attending a school or measure the standard of education delivered at a school. Each state and integrated school, is ranked into a decile on the basis of a socio- economic indicator. The indicator is based on Census data for households with school-aged children in each school’s catchment area. ”Quoted direct from the Ministry of Education website” If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or Mary O’Regan. Room 12 set themselves the target of

winning the Year 8 Lunchtime Sports. Here is a picture mid Shield final for Coney Island which they eventually went on to edge out a very impressive Room 20.

We have also studied WWI this year. Here is a picture of a group digital presentation on the key battles on the Western Front.

Room 13 Term 4.. How did it get here so quick? Room 13 has been focussing on Science this term.

We have investigated leaf litter, soaked Gummy Dinosaurs in vinegar, salt, and other things and taste tested jellybeans to see if we could tell what colour they were. This was all about teaching us scientific method to prepare for our

Science Fair Investigations which are underway now. In our Maths groups we have been learning about Geometry: circles, shapes, and Maths words and measurements assoated with it. We are finishing off more complicated things to do with fractions and decimals. Before we know it, there will be the Pool Party, Prize Giving, and Christmas, and then we will be Year 8s!! By Julia C

Room 14 In Room 14 we have been very busy! We have been working really hard on our Science Fair projects. We love hearing about each others experiments. We have lots of future scientists in our classroom! We had a great day at swimming sports. We all participated with a positive attitude. It was a fun day! It is time to start planning our delicious meals for our end of year river cook-up. Not long to go until we become Year 8s!

Room 15 On Monday 20 October, Room 15 went on an adventure to Parliament. We learnt about law making, debating, and how Parliament works. In Parliament we had our own debating of a new law. Each person had an important role to play; we got to dress up as whips, clerks, Members of Parliament, and the Prime Minister. In the afternoon, we went to Te Papa to look at the history of settlements. We enjoyed this very much and

would love to do this again. Room 16 In Term Four one of our big focuses has been on the Science Fair. This has been heaps of fun and there are some great experiments happening. We also did a study of the science fair, check out our video of our awesome work we did. http://ibty.in/kJ5v6I

Room 17 Room 17 have been working on our Science experiments. We have done some in class and have learnt how to write them up properly. We are now completing our experiments at home and getting our displays for Science Fair ready.

Library News What is the SUM-R-READERS programme?

We began this summer reading initiative in 2012, and last year we had nearly 100 Year 7s join. The programme is designed to reduce what has been described as ‘summer slide’ or when one’s reading ability can decline, through lack of practice, over the long summer break. Research suggests that students who continue to do even a little reading over the holidays maintain or increase their reading ability. Sum-R-Readers is designed to be an enjoyable programme

and reading of any sort ‘counts’ for our scheme; it may be books, magazines, websites etc. Some of our students will read a huge amount; for others, reading one book is their achievement. It isn’t the quantity but the quality of the reading that counts. I give out Reading Log Booklets which help our students keep track of their reading. Again, some of our students will write great detail about their books because they want to; for others, they might write a few sentences. I value their opinions on the books so however they choose to tell me about them is fine . How do you join the programme?

This reading programme is only available to our Year 7s who will be returning to Maidstone in Term 1, 2015. In order to sign up for the scheme, students must get a permission form signed by their parent or carer. All we ask is that students return their books in February 2015 when they come back to school. If any books are lost or badly damaged we ask that families do cover the cost of replacing the lost or damaged book. When students hand their books back in February 2015, with their Reading Log Books, they will earn a ‘Sum-R-Readers’ merit tag which gets their Year 8 off to a good start! Upper Hutt Library also offer their own summer reading programme which students may prefer to use, or can do along with our own Library programme. Any books borrowed from Upper Hutt Library or anywhere else can be included in our students Reading Log Booklet. When?

I will open up our Library on Monday 15th

December from 8am to 6pm for students to issue books out to take home over the holidays. If any of our parents or carers would like to be involved in helping their children choose some books, or if you are interested in seeing what our Library is like, please feel free to pop in from 8am-8.50am or from 3pm-6pm on this day. I look forward to seeing you on 15

th December. .

Mrs Asprey Library Manager. Inter-Intermediate School Swimming Sports.

On Monday 10th

November a team went to Naenae pool to represent Maidstone in the Inter-Intermediate School Swimming Sports. The students involved were: Connor W, Stephanie D, Bianca H, Ben McE, Josef MacD, Joseph G, Odin H, Tara C, Brehan T- B, Ashley L, Sydney-Anne M, Grace B, Paul Van Z and Charlotte F- R. They competed to the best of their ability on the day in a variety of swimming events from Freestyle to Butterfly. Unfortunately they did not place in the competition overall but enjoyed competing and the experience that they gained from participating. Thank you to the parents who offered their support by providing transport and supervising the students at the pool. The students represented our school with pride and lived the Maidstone Values.

Battle of the Bands 2015 On Tuesday the 11th of November 24 schools, including Maidstone, entered the extremely exciting Intermediate School Battle of the Bands competition. This was held at the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt. The day started well with everyone on time and an uneventful trip down the motorway to Lower Hutt. We were Event 4 on the programme, performing at 9:45 am. We had a lot of fun and it was a long day watching some pretty amazing bands. It didn’t finish till 4:30 pm. There were fun competitions including a very talent-filled ukulele battle, a funny noise competition, dancing, singing and percussion. There was some history too. Battle of the Bands started in 1996 at Tui Glen School in Stokes Valley. There were only a few bands then, not much equipment, and it was sponsored by the Music Warehouse who still donate the prizes. Winners have been:

The overall winner was Brandon, 2

didn’t win a place this year, we performed really well and will be back again next year. By Mattie T. School Holiday Computer Classes For ages 5 - 16. Year 7 and 8 Swimming Sports Over the last two weeks the students at Maidstone had the opportunity to participate in the Year 7 and Year 8 Swimming Sports that took place at H2O

xtream. They caught the bus up to the pool. There was a lot of excitement in the air as they were called up to compete in the events that they chose to compete in.

There were some outstanding swimmers in the Year 8 50m events, especially Stephanie D, and Connor W who won all of their races in the 50m freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly.

The Year 7 swimmers who were also very successful in the 50m events were Tara C, who won the Girls freestyle and backstroke, Brehan T- Bt who won in the breast stroke and Grace B who came first in butterfly. The year 7 boys who competed and stood out were Ben McE, who was first in the Boys freestyle, breast stroke and butterfly. He came a close second in the boys backstroke to Cason M.

The relays added some fun to the day with the life jacket race, fish push, and underwater relay. The students got into the spirit and cheered each other on. Both days were very successful and enjoyed by all students who attended. Congratulations to everyone who got involved. Thank you to Rachel Stam for

her involvement and work behind the scenes, organising the results for all of the 50m events.
