Term 2 is looking like a less busy term as far as extra events go so the focus will be on the learning programmes. Teachers will be writing reports later in the term and these will show the learning progress students have made in the first half of this year at Maidstone. We are in the process of transitioning to the Edge Student Management System (SMS). This SMS is an update on the Musac system and is cloud based. It will give us greater flexibility and ease with which to manage all the administration and the assessment data for our students. It is intended that our student reports will be completed in this system. The report format has had some minor edits to improve the clarity of information for parents but apart from that they are much the same as last year. The Architects and Quantity Surveyors have been appointed to our Hard Materials/Visual Arts rooms’ project. This is an exciting development for Maidstone with the space being completely refurbished. We expect completion early in 2017. Staffing news A very warm welcome to our new staff members: Mr Grant Reid in Room 4 - Gold Syndicate Leader Ms Linda Jury in Room 10 - Blue Syndicate Leader Miss Jodi Watson - Hard Materials Mr Mike Tamepo has also been appointed to Room 6 for the remainder of the year, providing continuity for this class. We are looking for parents and community members who would be interested in standing for the Board of Trustees, and for people who would be interested in being involved in our PTA/Fundraising group. If you think you might be interested, please contact the office and they will put you in touch with the right people to talk to. As an Intermediate School we can struggle to fill these roles, as students are here for two years only. However it’s a ‘never dull’ place and I know you will find either of these roles engaging and rewarding on a personal level as well as benefiting the school community your children are involved in. So don’t be shy….! It appears our wonderful weather has broken - it had to happen eventually! Rangatahi Maia (Our leaders growing together in courage)

We proudly wish to introduce our Maidstone community to our Rangatahi Leaders for 2016. Congratulations to Paris, Herewini, Renae, Kalani, Eileen, Mikayla, Jamie, Tamati, Aparna, Tremaine and Hewitt. A special acknowledgement to Kemara Mahuri-Tukukino as Kaitātaki (leader) tane and Maia Sian Barber in her role of Kaitātaki wahine. Uniform: Most students at Maidstone wear their school uniform correctly and with pride. It is a well-established routine for them to ensure that they are looking their best when they set off for school each morning. To ensure that this is the ‘norm’ for everyone, we are currently focussing on this as a school. It would be helpful if parents and whanau reinforced the guidelines mentioned below, and reminded the children as necessary.

Full school uniform must be worn to and from school.

School uniform is to be kept clean and tidy – damaged, defaced, worn out uniform is not acceptable.

Maidstone PE/sports uniform will be worn by students while participating in PE lessons and sports activities, and when representing Maidstone at some Inter-school events. Students are expected to have the PE uniform with them most days, as instructed by their classroom teachers.

The school jacket, polar fleece, scarf and beanie may be worn OUTSIDE during the second and third terms when the weather requires it. Long school pants are also an option.

When weather requires it, a jacket can be worn OUTSIDE ONLY in the playground.

A watch, signet ring and ONE pair of small STUD earrings (school colours) are the only items of jewellery allowed.

Students are NOT PERMITTED to wear makeup or nail polish at school.

Head bands, and hair ties must be plain, and school colours (white, grey or black)

The school uniform identifies us as Maidstone Intermediate students in our community. It is good to receive reports from members of the community about our students showing the values and representing the school, and themselves, in a positive way. Thank you for your on-going support with this. Kerry Baines, DP

Maidstone PTA. The PTA is a small group of parents who make significant contributions to the running of our school in a practical way. We are having our first meeting for this year on Monday 16 May at 7:00pm in the staffroom. It would be great to see "old hands" again as well as new faces who wish to come along and be involved. Our first order of business will be to elect a chairperson as Barry Davies has stepped down following a successful tenure in 2015.... thank you Barry. If you're not sure whether being on the PTA is for you, why not come along to our first meeting and see what a nice bunch we are? To cater for numbers could you please email me [email protected] if you are planning to attend the meeting. Many thanks.
