    VICAR’S LETTER

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn – Romans 12:15 Normally at this time of year our minds would be turning towards holidays. Some of us would be looking forward to getting away to somewhere new or maybe to somewhere we love and return to again and again. Holidays are those times when we can stop spinning the plates that make up our busy lives. Often when we return we hope that we can hold on to some of the things that we enjoyed about the slower pace of life.

As lockdown measures continue to be relaxed I am finding that I am looking back at those early days of lockdown when life as we knew it changed overnight. There was a slower pace of life for some of us. The glorious weather that encouraged us out into the garden or on walks.

Now might be an important time to just take stock of our lives – what we have gained and what we have lost over the last four months since the middle of March.

Over the last month I have watched a BBC programme from 2006 – The Monastery. Five men spent 40 days living in a monastery with a religious community. They entered into the daily lives of the monks, including attending all the services and working alongside the monks. At the end of the 40 days each man made a decision about what he would take away with him from their time at Worth Abbey.

I wonder what you would like to keep in your life from lockdown? I know that I would like to keep the space that I gained at the beginning. I would like to continue to walk each day. But I know, just like holiday dreams, it won’t be easy as daily life speeds up once again.

I also know things have been lost. Some of those things can be regained. I know I was disappointed as the diary emptied of a number of events that couldn’t happen because of the pandemic. I am sure that is the same for others. Some of those events we can get back. Some cannot.

There are things we have lost, and we will not be able to regain them.

    WORSHIP AT ST JOHN’S SILVERDALE

We are delighted that we can be back in Church but, while we protect ourselves from COVID-19, you will notice some differences. Sadly, we are obliged to draw your attention to the following:

    • Please queue with appropriate social distancing while you wait to enter – we’ll show you where you can sit.

    • You will need to provide your name and contact details which will be held for 21 days for ‘Test & Trace’.

    • Remember: don’t shake hands or hug!• Social distancing! Do keep 2m apart all the time.• Sadly, singing is not permitted in churches.• You’ll have sit where shown and leave one at a time.• Please touch as little as possible on your way to and from your

place.• You must sanitise hands – coming in and going out.• When we have Holy Communion, it will be very different. Listen

out for how we’re going to do it.• We have gone contactless. We would encourage you to give

money online or using the contactless machine rather than cash.

If we can’t worship safely, then we won’t be able to open up for services, so thank you for your co-operation.

You ARE very welcome as we worship Jesus together!!

The lost months of relationships, not being able to visit loved ones and families. And the hardest of all not being able to say goodbye to a loved one as they died.

For many people the relaxation of lockdown is something to be celebrated, but for others it is a time of grief.

Whatever you decided to take from the last four months, I hope that it will be something that will enhance your life. Hold on to the good, let go of what is not helpful and cry with those who cry.

    Mary Ashton

Our church remains closed and at present there are no plans to re-open for Sunday services in the immediate future. However, the situation is continually changing and we will keep people updated. We are still keeping in touch with each other. Local churches are making use of Zoom to meet together for worship.

Last month we listed some of the considerable amount of provision on the internet for those who wish to listen in to acts of worship. Many people have found these Methodist sites really helpful:-

    RETURNING TO “NORMAL”?

There are lots of signs of normal life beginning to resume as demonstrated by the gradual reopening of pubs, cafés and shops, and also by the restoration of the What’s On section of the Parish magazine – the first time that we have had anything but cancellations to report since March. Much still cannot go ahead as normal - as noted later in the magazine - but it is good that some activities are starting to get going again.

The resumption of services in Church is also very welcome as we know that many people have missed being able to worship with others. On 26 July, a familiar feature of Silverdale Sundays was back for the first time since the beginning of lockdown, when bell-ringing on all the Silverdale bells resumed – not for the regular Sunday service but for a wedding! Many congratulations to the bride and groom.

Given social distancing requirements, it was only possible for all six bells to be rung in a touch of Bob Doubles because we were assisted by a bell-ringing family from Kirkby Lonsdale. Many thanks to Nigel, Carolina, James and Matthew Goodship, Kevin Alpin and (of course) Silverdale’s ringing maestro, Robin Daw, for making it happen. We are totally prejudiced, but it has been great to read the nice comments that lots of people have put on Facebook welcoming the return of ringing.

As everyone starts to pick up various other activities, we very much hope that time will still be found to continue the community support that has been so strong in Silverdale over the last few months.

    VILLAGE NEWS

PARISH JOTTINGS - JULY 2020 - TERRY BOND

Co-option: Liz Unsworth was co-opted as a councillor replacing Phil Bickerstaff.

Planning: No objections to trecent applications. Cllr Greenwell was asked to raise the issue at City Council of planning permission being given for new builds and extensions without adequate provision for septic tank and wastewater drainage and appropriate follow-up by building inspectors to ensure that the correct equipment was installed.

Parish Contractors: Agreed to form a small group to review tender arrangements and qualifications of contractors

Speeding: Several letters from residents had been received regarding this issue, which appears to have worsened during lockdown. A survey had also been done on Facebook about the issue. The brackets for the Speed Indicator Devices were now in place and the SPIDs needed to be fitted asap. Discussion will continue about the purchase of a SPID which provides data on vehicles speeding. It was also stated that many of the speeding vehicles in the village were driven by residents themselves!

Parking: Discussion on this was deferred to the next meeting, and it was recognised that residents should be involved in forming a solution to this problem in the village.

Playground: The newly-sown grass was doing well. Climbing rope needed replacing: Clerk to order new part. Agreed to reopen the playground as of Saturday 18 July. Those supervising children will need to take responsibility for the cleaning of children’s clothes and hands.

Noticeboards: A report was received from the Healthy Village Communications Group recommending the repair and renewal of village noticeboards. Agreed that this will be costed and completed.

Trees: Given the speedy onset of ash dieback, it was agreed that a survey of parish trees would be carried out to know how many ash trees would need felling.

Council members have been so busy attending to a wide variety of issues that we have overlooked the need to communicate this work adequately to the public. With this in mind, Council co-opted Liz Unsworth on 6 July, primarily to take on the role of Communications Officer. Liz brings to Council much-needed expertise in public and media relations.

Details still need to be finalised, but essentially Liz will prepare regular bulletins for circulation to the Silverdale public and the news media to familiarise recipients with Council activities. It is proposed to issue details of other Councillor responsibilities with contact details so that the public have a direct route to feed information and ideas into the system.

Distribution will be mainly using electronic means and including Facebook and the Council website, but also printed copy for the Parish Magazine and the Council noticeboard. We will also explore any advantages to be gained from direct communication with the clubs and associations as appropriate.

SURPLUS FOOD STALLThe Surplus Food Stall will be back in operation again over the summer. Every Wednesday morning from 9-11 am, starting on 22 July, the stall will be set up in front of the Gaskell Hall.

If your veg plot, fruit bushes or fruit trees are producing too much for you to handle, don’t throw away the surplus. Bring it along to the stall, where you can swap it for something else or donate it for someone else to take. There is no charge, but some people generously put a donation in our Morecambe Food Bank collection box. Try to bring along your own carrier bag or basket for taking produce away. We do have some paper bags available.

    VJ DAY

15 August is the 75th anniversary of VJ Day – the day Japan surrendered, in effect ending the Second World War – and the Government is to announce plans to mark the 75th anniversary, though in view of the continued lockdown, celebrations are likely to be very muted.

It should also be remembered that the War did not simply come to a dead stop for everyone on 15 August 1945. There was an entire Allied Army – together with prisoners of war, many of whom were in extremely poor health – to be repatriated, with the result that large numbers of servicemen were despatched to the Far East to facilitate their return.

My parents married in 1944. My father was an aircraft fitter in the RAF and found himself posted to India towards the end of 1945: like many RAF personnel, he didn’t get back to England to be demobbed until the middle of 1946.

    Frank Cranmer

    Note:

The Royal British Legion is asking everyone to remember the contribution of all Commonwealth and Allied Forces on this day. It is astonishing to realise that that the fighting in the Asia-Pacific took place from Hawaii to North East India. The main fighting force from Britain and the Commonwealth, the Fourteenth Army, was apparently one of the most diverse in history, with over forty languages spoken and all the world’s major religions represented.

It is also important that we remember all those who were innocent victims of a very cruel war, including those who suffered in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

.... not just social distancing and bubbles ....

Oh dear – the words that have crept into our everyday vocabulary are alarming. Alarming because we have so quickly embraced them and, I guess, rightly so. Keith and I formed a bubble with two family members this last week and found that we quickly relaxed with each other but were still very cautious when out and about – the house seemed like a refuge to return to!!

Many of you may know that some of the WI ladies met on the Institute Field – sitting in circles on their own chairs, 2m apart. The outcome proved to be a wonderful experience for all and reinforced my mantra that the WI means friendship, friendship, friendship. The social interaction that we were able to enjoy was immeasurable and something that we had all missed.

Meanwhile, the committee has continued to be busy getting information out to the membership with our own Broadsheet compiled and edited by Molly and Nancy – a big thank you to them and all contributors.

We have also co-opted two new committee members, Polly Broadhurst and Jocelyn Pritchard. We congratulate them on these appointments and very much welcome fresh eyes/ideas to the team.

It is still unclear when we shall all be able to get together for a monthly meeting – safety being paramount. Meanwhile, take care.

    Kind Regards

ARCHBISHOP HUTTON CHARITY: WARTON ALMS HOUSESSubsidised housing for people in need of support

Hundreds of years ago, a Charity was set up by Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York from 1595 to 1606, who came from the Ancient Parish of Warton. The Charity provides subsidised housing for those in need of support and who at the time of applying live in the parishes of Warton, Yealand, Borwick or Silverdale.

At present, there are two vacancies. The properties are available, at significantly lower cost than would be usual, for applicants who can demonstrate a need for such support. The Alms Houses are a pair of semidetached bungalows, each with a double and small single bedroom, together with living room, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor area. Viewing can be arranged prior to making an application.

Application forms, and some further details (including costs), are available from the Secretary of Trustees (address below) and must be returned to the Secretary by 4.00 pm on 28 August. Applications will be considered by Trustees and short-listed applicants will be called for interview towards the end of September.

    SILVERDALE VILLAGE PLAYERS

It is with heavy hearts that, on top of having to postpone the performance of Under Milk Wood and cancel the Treasure Island show, Silverdale Village Players are very sorry to announce that this year’s panto will not be going ahead.

Although the restrictions imposed through the period of lockdown are gradually being relaxed, it is still unclear when live theatre performances will be able to resume. We are sure that you appreciate how much hard work goes into preparing and rehearsing for each of our productions. Under normal circumstances we would already have begun our panto preparation, but it’s clear that the current restrictions would hamper our ability to rehearse safely and sufficiently and to be able to put on a production of the quality we would all expect.

We’d like to thank everyone involved in all three productions for their hard work and dedication, even though the shows couldn’t be performed.

Please save up your ticket money as we hope to be treading the Gaskell Hall boards next year!

GARDEN JOBS FOR AUGUST• Watch out for vine weevil damage on garden and pot plants –

particularly the latter. Notched edges of leaves eaten by the adult or complete collapse of the plant after the 1cm long grubs have eaten the roots indicate this pest. Drench the soil/compost in a solution of Imidacloprid. If you don’t want to use this neonicotinoid, removing any plant in a pot, shaking off and examining the compost is an alternative. The grubs are large enough to be picked out manually. The birds love them. Repot afterwards – the plant not the birds.

    • Clip over lavenders and hebes to keep compact. This must be a light trimming, or you may kill the plant.

    • Dig over and prepare areas to be seeded for grass. Late August/early September is an ideal time for sowing grass. At the end of the month, or in September, apply autumn lawn feed to established lawns. This toughens it up for the winter.

    • Sow spring cabbages and winter lettuces. A late sowing of salad crops as well as spinach, chard and beetroot can fill gaps and crop this autumn. Regularly pick summer-sprouting broccoli and courgettes.

    • Order spring-flowering bulbs. Mail order provides a better selection, but they also become available in garden centres in August in normal times. Daffodils, crocus and alliums can be planted now.

    • Give hedges their final trim of the year.

    • Raise the lawnmower blades in dry weather and mow less frequently.

    • Prune out fruited blackcurrant stems completely. Feed with a general fertiliser.

    • Seed-raised annuals such as Cosmos, Nicotiana, Ammi and Zinnia make good cutting flowers. Regularly snipping off flowers just above a leaf joint encourages new growth and flowers.

    • Prune rambling roses. Cut out some of the older stems and shorten side shoots on remainder. Prayers can be offered before embarking on this enterprise.

SILVERDALE, NATURALLYHave you noticed the new terminologies which have intruded into village conversations as a result of the coronavirus epidemic? I list but a few: flattening the curve, first wave, second wave, week-end effect, spike, furlough, quarantine, lockdown. There doesn’t seem to be a single word for the opposite of ‘lockdown’ and we have to resort to the clumsy ‘releasing the lockdown’. As well as using the new language of crisis during casual conversations delivered from at least 2 metres apart, villagers are developing new interests and ambitions to give structure to the weeks that seem to fly by without fixed points contributed by choir rehearsals, bridge, WI, coffee mornings in the Gaskell Hall etc. I know of ladies sewing scrubs for hospital workers, birders out logging bird species – one couple of my acquaintance has claimed to have identified over 170 species of wildflower on our patch during their daily walks. So many people are out jogging and cycling and maybe there are some writing novels going under the radar. Those fortunate enough to have gardens have occupied themselves bringing their plots to kempt perfection, only to have them wrecked by the vicious storms of late June and early July. The feature pergola in my garden was half demolished by one of them taking down mature clematis climbers, wisteria and roses.

My personal odyssey is an unusual one: I play the piano tolerably well (as the son of a music teacher does) and love Beethoven’s music, so I am celebrating his 250th birthday by trying to work my way through all 32 of his divine piano sonatas. I have an old German publication which, helpfully, indexes the sonatas in order of increasing difficulty as well as in the order in which they were written. (Amateur pianists in the village who can play the famous first movement of the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ will be interested to learn that it is 22nd in order of difficulty, mainly on account of the frenetic final movement.) I am up to 8th in the order of difficulty and it makes for gruesome listening, I confess. Each page I turn gets blacker with a greater density of notes and increasing complexity in flats and sharps. Will I ever reach and conquer the ‘Hammerklavier’, the 32nd in order of difficulty? Probably not.

Everyone needs their own personal Hammerklavier to strive for in perilous days.
