INDOOR BOWLS REPORT

With increasing numbers the Indoor Bowls playing

days on Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoons, have be-

come a little crowded and six mats as a possible maxi-

mum on the wooden floor allows up to 48 people to

enjoy the wonderful game.

It is hoped that in the future that the Silverdale RSA

may consider enlarging the playing floor space for an

extra seventh mat to be used.

On Sunday the 27th of July, a team of twenty to twenty-

four people from the Silverdale Indoor bowls members

will play a visiting team from the Howick RSA Indoor

bowls. Our new chef has agreed to provide a nice lunch

for a reasonable sum and I am sure will be enjoyed by

both teams. The next event on the Silverdale Indoor bowls calendar

is the Birthday event on Thursday, September the 18th,

celebrating the 21st year since the Indoor bowls club

began.

Ron Megerney

8 BALL REPORT

We seem to be an ever increasing number. Maintaining our 30 plus

players on Saturday’s and 16 on Tuesday night. We had 2 further

tournaments this month – Ladies and Men’s Chosen Pairs. The

women’s comp coincided with the Colin Whalen Annual event at

Warkworth RSA leaving them with a much quieter room to con-

centrate. Successful on the day were Zuly Lyth and Colleen

Brine. We entered 5 Teams into the Warkworth event but the com-

petition was fierce with entries from top NZ players. Mervyn

McNab and David Watson represented well by taking out the Run-

ner-Up money in the Plate Final. The following weekend the

Men’s trophy was won by Keith Bate and Kato Pera. August the

9th is the big tournament of the year with the RSA 8 ball Nationals

to be held at Warkworth again. We have an invitation for 2 teams.

There will need to be a playoff to win the opportunity to represent

the Silverdale RSA at this event as more than 4 members wish to

participate.

Want to get back into the game…….. See you on Saturday!

KEV REPORT

On 29th June we held our mid-winter luncheon with some 95 mem-

bers, wives/partners and KEV widows plus guests attending. The

catering team led by Lewis provided an excellent meal and President

Jim Murray brought the team onto the floor to ensure they received

due appreciation for their efforts. The bar staff were also compli-

mented.

A highlight of the day was the announcement that our most senior

member Bill Smith was celebrating his 101st birthday. We all greeted

the news by singing the usual refrain. John Taylor’s daughter Delwyn

Argar, who incidentally did a great job in organising the raffles, then

surprised everyone by taking Bill by the hand and danced an anniver-

sary waltz together. Well done Delwyn. President Jim also intro-

duced and welcomed Danny Paton as a new member. Danny is a

serving member of the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Our July meeting welcomed David Blyth, a film producer living in

Manly, who spoke about his efforts to record on film the personal

experiences of active service veterans. David made a film of his

grandfather’s WW 1 experiences and he feels that similar experiences

of WW 2 and other conflicts should be recorded for the benefit of

future generations.

On a final note President Jim thanked Kay & Max Chilman for their

part in arranging a successful mid-winter lunch.

GOLF SECTION

Off the Tees well the Golf Section has had an interesting month, the

monthly tour was taken to Pakaranga Golf and Country

Club. A course not many had played, and it did show!

To be fair the ground was soft and the weather though

Heads. Paul Askew managed to be the proud wearer of

the jacket though it was a tight three way tie decided on

count back! A special mention of John Gillespie’s in-

vited guest who successfully beat the field but was un-

able to claim the booty. We were without our noble bar

RUBY’S SATURDAY LUNCH DATE AND

LINE DANCE SOCIALS As promised, brand new Saturday occasional lunch dates

and relaxed style shorter line dancing socials, providing a

chance to catch up with your line dance and non line

dancer friends.

These will be on 16th August & 20th September. If it

proves popular further dates will be announced. The cost

is $5 for line dancers and free for invited non line dancer

friends.

You can send in requests to Ruby at

[email protected] beforehand to enable her to

prepare a playlist for continuous play for some of the time.

This is a great opportunity for a convivial get together for

all line dancers and their guests to enjoy some free time,

and puts the social back into social.

Also Ruby will be back with a 4 hour Roaring 20’s themed

social at the RSA on Sunday 19th October, so plenty to

look forward to.
