All Welcome

Term two is progressing well, as we

climatize to the cold weather of winter.

Typical of this time of year we’ve had a

number of staff out with the flu, and I’d

like to take the opportunity to thank our

dedicated team of Casual Relief

Teachers who have supported our

students in their learning over the past

month. It’s great to have a team of staff

that are so well connected to our school

that things continue seamlessly.

Athletics Day

Our annual athletics day was a great hit

as usual, with students dressing up in

their house colours to support their

team. Well done to all students who

achieved great results and in many

cases, will progress to the next level of

competition against Gippsland schools.

Careers in Focus

Our Year 9 students engaged in a

presentation from Federation University

last week, highlighting some of the

opportunities and benefits of university

life. Feedback from students was very

positive, as they look ahead to the next

few months and start to make senior

school and careers-based decisions.

Student Attitudes to School

The annual state-wide survey known as

the Attitudes to School Survey will be

conducted with all students over the

next two weeks. This year the survey will

be conducted online, which will allow us

to obtain the valuable feedback much

sooner. The survey explores how

students feel about our school culture,

their peers, their teachers and classes.

We look forward to their feedback.

Continuous Reporting

In the next week all families will

receive a letter and supporting

materials in the mail, outlining our

new continuous reporting process. In

essence, the shift will be from

students receiving static report

comments once a semester, to

receiving them continuously

throughout the semester. We believe

this will make the comments and

feedback more useful, and go a long

way to improving student learning.

Continuous feedback comments have

been occurring since the start of this

year, and can be viewed by parents

and students using the Compass

phone app. Please contact our office

if you need your login details.

Finally, a reminder in line with the cold

weather, that students should not

wear non-uniform jumpers or jackets.

Both items in a uniform option are

available, and I encourage any

families in need of assistance to

contact the relevant year level

coordinator or myself so we can

provide support.

A few reminders: Uniform

As the cold weather sets in it is recommended that students

wear the warmer items of the uniform. Leggings and

hooded tops are not acceptable substitutes for school

trousers, jumpers or winter skirts. If your child is going to be

out of uniform for a valid reason please contact the school

to let us know or write a note of explanation for your child

to show to us.

Students who are not in uniform will receive a 15-minute

Sub School detention, which takes place on either a Tuesday

or Thursday. I will contact persistent offenders in an effort

to provide support.

The uniform can be paid for at the main office and collected

from the uniform shop on either Tuesday or Thursday from

1.15 – 2.00 pm.

Mobile Phones Listening to music whist working on learning tasks is a

privilege at the discretion of the class teacher. Unless

agreed by the class teacher mobile phones are not to be

used during class time. 1st offence –phone is confiscated and returned at the end of

the lesson.

2nd offence –Phone is confiscated and stored in the locked

cupboard.

3rd offence – Phone is confiscated and parents are contacted

to collect the phone at their earliest convenience.

All students should have a lock on their locker. Phones can

be left in lockers rather than taken to class. Phones can be

checked at recess and lunchtime for any urgent messages.

Fidget spinners are toys. Toys are not to be used in class

as a distraction from learning.

Reporting Common Assessment Tasks

As your child completes assessment tasks the teacher

feedback is available to you on Compass. Your child’s

teacher may contact you if they do not complete these

assessments, as it is vital that teachers provide feedback for

learners to make progress.

Please contact me if you have any feedback about your

child’s progress reports.

Positive Behaviour. Please take some time with your child to review our school

positive behaviour matrix. Paying particular attention to the

hands off policy, the use of appropriate language tone and

volume and being equipped and prepared for learning.

Biggest Morning Tea, Cancer Council

Maffra For the past two weeks, Year 9 students in their Connect

classes have been investigating social enterprises and

charities. As a part of their work, some students produced

posters, banners, flyers and food for the Cancer Council’s

Biggest Morning Tea.

We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to

participate in the Cancer Council of Maffra’s morning tea at

the Maffra Bowls Club. Four students, Charlotte Kiefer,

Hannah Gardiner, Phoebe Tennant and Kaitlyn McElroy

spent the morning serving tea, coffee and cakes to a group

of community members to raise money for cancer support.

The theme for the Biggest Morning Tea was the “Mad

Hatters Tea Party”. The bowls club was decorated in

spectacular fashion making the day even more memorable.

Many thanks to Carol Caffrey and her family members for

transporting the props.

Deidre Relph, President of the Cancer Council of Maffra, was

extremely pleased with the decorations and food made by

our students, the helpers on the day and the effort that our

college put in to help the charity. The day raised over $1200

for cancer research.

Thanks to the Maffra division for letting us be a part of this

important event.

A BEACON EVENT was held in May in conjunction with SALE COLLEGE at Foster Place Café. The focus of the day was to allow students to create their own Personal Brand to give greater impact to potential employers. The 1 day work readiness programs are designed to build the capacity of young people, enabling them to transition from school to the world of work, further education and or training.

V-Line representatives, both local and metropolitan, attended the session from lunch onwards and reinforced the concepts of being proactive, having an eye catching resume (include something that is unique to the applicant AND relevant) and recognising the transferable skills that you need for your chosen career.

Meningococcal School Immunisation

program 2017: Important Information

Free meningococcal ACWY vaccine for Years 10, 11

and 12

In 2017 the Victorian Secondary School Vaccine

Program will offer free meningococcal ACWY

vaccine to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The

vaccine provides protection against four strains of

meningococcal disease (ACWY) and is administered as

a single dose.

The Meningococcal ACWY Secondary School Vaccine

Program consent card will be sent home from school

with your child in early June. Please read the

information, complete and return the card regardless

of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Vaccination will be given early in Term 3

Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal

disease. Although uncommon, it can become life

threatening very quickly. There are different strains of

meningococcal bacteria known by letters of the

alphabet, including meningococcal A, B, C, W and Y. In

recent years the meningococcal W strain has increased

across Australia, with Victoria experiencing 11 cases to

date in 2017 and 48 cases in 2016, compared to 17

cases in 2015, four in 2014 and one in 2013. It is now

the predominant strain in Victoria.

The Wellington Shire immunisation team may contact

you about the meningococcal ACWY vaccine program.

Schools are authorised to provide basic

parent/guardian contact details to local councils for

this purpose. Contact the school by 7 June 2017 if

you do not want your contact details given to the

Wellington Shire immunisation service.

meningococcal ACWY vaccine and how you can

prepare your child for vaccination, visit

Volleyball News Andrew McIntosh

Volleyball Coach

Winners are Grinners Maffra Secondary College had a great day at the recent 1

day schools cup event held in Dandenong. We had 3 teams

entered, and all the teams came away with medals, which is

a result way beyond what we expected. This is the first

tournament many of these athletes have participated in,

and it turned out to be a positive introduction to the sport

of Volleyball.

The boy’s team was a blend of year 7 and year 8 boys. With

6 beginners on the team we expected them to struggle, but

Coach Matt Angliss was impressed by the level of skill and

the desire to do well shown by all the boys. They struggled

against a bigger Rowville team, but certainly held their own

against Upwey, winning a set and going close in all other

sets. They were very proud to receive a Bronze Medal for

their efforts.

The year 7 girls went down to Melbourne to gain some

experience for the 3 Day Schools cup in July, but exceeded

expectations to come away with a Silver medal. The day

didn’t start that well, as we played the eventual gold medal

winners in our first game, and they were far superior. The

girls regathered and went on to win the rest of their pool

games to end second in their pool. They then won the cross

over against the top team from the other pool to progress

to the Gold Medal playoff, only to come up against

Heathdale again. We put up a much stronger fight the

second time around, but once again they showed they were

the superior team by comfortably winning. Our year 7 girls

were battered and bruised, tired after a very long day yet

elated at the outcome which was completely unexpected.

The year 8 girls were the stars of the show, only losing 1 set

for the entire day. The girls are now playing very competitive

volleyball and will need to be placed in the strongest

competitions from now on to keep them challenged. As a

group they have been training hard, with several of them

attending 3 trainings a week. The hard work is paying off

with wins on the board. A big thanks to Shae Oakley who

normally coaches this team but had study commitments on

the day.

Australian Mathematics Comp

The Australian Maths Competition is running again this year

on Thursday 27th July. This is a fantastic opportunity for

students to challenge themselves, improve their problem-

solving skills and see how they match-up against other

Maths students across Australia.

All students who compete will receive a certificate of

participation, regardless of their performance. There are

also monetary prizes for students who do exceptionally well.

The cost of the Maths Competition will be $3 per student.

If you would like your son/daughter to participate in the

competition, please pay $3 to the General Office by the

deadline of Wednesday 7th June.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to

call the college and speak to either your child’s Maths

teacher or Mr Clark, the Maths Co-ordinator.

Student Achievements

On Saturday 27th May Katrina Morgan represented the

school at the Berwick Grammar interschool combined

training day on her horse Party. Up against some very

strong competition from local riders, including a strong

team from the host school, she did very well to finish a

credible 3rd in her

class after a good

dressage test and

only 4 penalties in

the showjumping.

Well done Katrina

and thank you for

representing Maffra
