TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 7Encouraged by the success of ‘Aryamala’ and ‘Sivakavi’, K.

S. Narayana Iyengar and S. M. Sriramulu Naidu launchedtheir next production titled ‘Jagathalaprathapan’ under theirPakshiraja Films banner at Central Studios, Coimbatore.

Popularly known as a”12 Ministers’ Tale”, the folk tale wasall about a prince (Chinnappa) who incurs the wrath of hisfather (Rangachari) when he expresses his heartfelt desire tospend his life in the company of four angelic women Indrani(Sarojini), Nagakumari (Jeevaratnam), Agnikumari(Varalakshmi) and Varunakumari (Jayalakshmi), princessesof Indraloka, Nagaloka, Agniloka and Varunaloka respec-tively!

The enraged king orders the beheading of the son bydaybreakbut the queen (Santhanalakshmi) sends him awayto escape punishment. Prathapan wanders around and meetsa friend (Krishnan)and the two, protected by the DivineMothernamed Avvai, (Saradambal) live in a hut created byher. Prathapan notices a damsel (Sarojini) bathing in a nearbypond, also created by Avvai, and steals her sari. Indrakumari, who cannot go back to her world without the sari, chases himto the hut. Avvai hides the sari and changes him into an infant!

The damsel loves the childwho soon becomes his true self. The two marry.

A king appoints him as his commander and falls for his wife.To find a cure for his feigned sickness, he sends him away toNagaloka! Prathapan succeeds in his endeavours and returnswith three more wives from each world, making four in all!

The hero undergoes incredible adventures I in the processand ultimately succeeds to live happily thereafter with themall!

Chinnappa’s popularity scaled greater heights with thisfilm. In the opening sequence when he enters to meet hisparents, he walks with a spring in his step. (Iconic Tamil writerand critic Kalki reviewing the film described the walk‘yegiri…yegiri…’! And ‘yegiri’, a Telugu word meaning ‘jump’,crept into the ‘Madras Tamil’ lingo!)

The film was highly entertaining with a number of songs(lyrics: Papanasam Sivan and music: G. Ramanathan) ren-dered by Chinnappa, Santhanalakshmi, Rangachari, Sarojini,Jeevaratnam and Krishnan.

There were also engaging dance sequences. One of them (thesnake dance) was by the Bharatanatyam legend in the mak-ing, 8-year-old ‘Baby’ Kamala. Another was by Yogambal(Yogam-Mangalam). Bharatanatyam legend Vazhuvoor B.Ramaiah Pillai choreographed them.

(In keeping with the trend of the day of abbreviating nameslike Y. V. Rao, B.N. Rao, B.N. Reddi, H.M. Reddy, and S. S.Vasan, Ramaiah Pillai’s name appeared in a few films as V. B.R. Pillai!)

In a stunning sequence, Chinnappa sings a song like its beingrendered in a concertwith the accompanists playing the violin, mridangam, ghatam and ‘konnakol’, all played by Chinnappahimself in a single frame! It was a brilliant shot of trickphotography by the talented cinematographer V. Krishnan. For some reason, this song was not released as a gramophonerecord of the movie. Later Chinnappa rendered the song for aprivate recording company. Its ad showed Chinnappa playingall the instruments.

(In the gramophone record Chinnappa introduced an origi-nal classic touch. After he finishes his Konnakol innings, hesays ‘Indha!’ (‘Hereit is’ in Tamil) to the mridangam player totake it up further! This song ‘Namkkini Bhayamedhu’ inKalyani Raagam was a hit.)

Konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllablesvocally. The late Pudukottai Dakshinamurthi Pillai, a topexponent of mridangamand kanjeera was a top maestro in theart of Konnakol of the bygone decades. Today T. H. SubhashChandran, brother of the ‘ghatam’ maestro T. H. Vinayakramis considered the top Konnakol performer.

‘Jagathalaprathapan’ was a smash hit at the box officemainly because of the scintillating performance of P. U.Chinnappa and also the music of G. Ramanathan. With thisfilm, Ramanathan scaled the ladder of success a few moresteps and a bright innings was just round the corner waitingfor him ...

Sir, There are threeschools within a short dis-tance on 4th Avenue, AshokNagar, which is a very busyroad. This causes heavy traf-fic jam during school open-ing and closing hours.

Vehicles that come to pickand drop the students areparked haphazardly and al-most occupy three-fourth ofthe road margin inconve-niencing other motorists.

Pedestrians including theschool students are put atrisk as they are forced towalk almost on the middle ofthe road. I request the traf-fic officials to depute a coupleof traffic constables during
