Originaly founded by award winning German drummer and composer Carola Grey as a Jazz/Fusion group back in New York in 1991, the new NOISY MAMA now consists of some of the most amazing Indian musicians. The music is their personal ‘Noisy Mama ‘ blend of Indian Jazz-Rock. Solid Jazz-Funk and Rock grooves, combined with the sophisticated rhythms from India and bound together by Carola’s distinctive style of writing, playing and singing. Melodically her compositions utilize Indian ragas as well as Western melody and harmony. With the input from her fantastic cast of musicians, the two worlds are combined seemingly effortless, and together the band creates a specialsound that leaves all different kinds of audiences in India andEurope excited and spellbound. After receiving the Munich Music Award and an much acclaimed first album ʻRoad to Goaʼ (NMP 2012), they performed the first big shows in India earlier this year, whichmarked the beginning of a band that might just leave some serious marks in the music world.

This Mama made some noise!SANJAY SREE

Noisy Mama was indeed a meeting of continents as Carola Grey and her Indian band fused jazz and ragas to create an eclectic newsound, writes SANJAY SREE

As expected, Noisy Mama enthralled the audience with a stunning performance of classic Carnatic ragas augmentedwith jazz rock modes, perfectly blending the East and West. This meeting of the continents was rendered on the guitar, keyboard, bass and drums put together by the funky Carola Grey. The stage was set ablaze with an array of intense instrumental fusion combinations. The evening started off withGerman drummer Carola creating an array of dynamics that set the mood for an evening of pulsating music. Shefollowed it up with ‘Mad Razz’, a tight and precise combination of Carnatic ragas with modern jazz scales. The next composition ‘Mad Chicks Fly’ had a point to make. “If you’ve been labelled mad, then you have nothing tolose. You can fly,” said Carola. This piece saw Palakkad Sreeram render a flute solo, Biju playing the sitar from hiselectronic keyboards and Naveen on bass. When Carola travelled to Goa, she came up with ‘Road To Goa’, a composition that encompasses her musical travelexperiences in India. Next up was ‘Sangeetham’, an original composition of late music director Raveendran that Bijufirst played to her. It lingered in her mind long enough for her to re-structure the tune by adding a few syllables of jazzand Carnatic accents. Sreeram then took over, with a konnakol and electronic hand drum solo. When the drums spokeFor ‘Pot Talk’, John Anthony (of Karnatriix fame) came up with a guitar solo in the shadwidha marghini with thenasikabooshini scales. He was joined by Naveen on bass; this was followed by a drum solo by Carola who tamed thedrumset, bringing out every minute sound possible by pounding it with her off-beats and cymbal accents.Carola has spent some time in Chennai and is familiar with its energy, sound and peak-hour rush. ‘Chennai Moments’was her tribute to the city. It started off with Biju’s soulful electronic sarangi solo intro on the keyboard. The concludingpiece was the folksy ‘Ella Xorepsomai’. “A German drummer, playing with Indian musicians and performing a Greekfolk song. Why not?” asked Carola, as she launched into the foot-tapping number. The concert was supported by Goethe Zentrum.(The writer is a freelance guitarist, musician and band player)

Make noise with this Mama!PANKAJA SRINIVASAN

Carola Grey travelled the world and found true love in Indian music. The result is Meeting of the Continents, Indian jazz fusion, performed with her band Noisy Mama, writes Pankaja Srinivasan

Date: November 10Venue: PSG College of Arts and ScienceTime: 7.30 p.m.Genre: Indian Jazz FusionShe is regarded as one of Germany’s most famous modern drummers. In 2010 she became the only woman to be part ofGerman Drum Heroes, the 25 best German drummers selected by the magazine Drum Heads. She has collaboratedwith musicians such as Mike Stern, Ravi Coltrane, Rocco Prestia, Larry Coryell, Jeff Berlin and Stu Hamm. She is also acomposer, arranger and a singer. Carola Grey’s CDs have made it to the top 10 of the US Gavin Jazz Charts and havewon many awards. She has travelled the world and in India she has been studying South Indian music under thetutelage of Padma Bhushan T.V. Gopalakrishnan. Carola Grey performs with her band Noisy Mama at The HinduFriday Review November Fest. The concert is supported by Goethe Zentrum.A clip of their performance.Excerpts from an interview:When were you first exposed to Indian music? My first encounter with Indian music was in 1996 when the great T.V. Gopalkrishnan invited me to (then) Madras toperform with his ‘Carnatic Jazz Project’. He had heard my first CD, a modern Jazz one, that I recorded in New YorkCity in the early 90s, and he spontaneously invited me to India and that was it! Working with him and hearing greatIndian music started as a passion; now it is an important part of my life. What attracted you to Indian music? If I have to analyse it, I would say: ‘The combination of intellectual challenge and the transportation of emotions at thesame time.’ More simply, it hit me when I first heard it. I felt the same way when I first heard Miles Davis. Like a littlekid at Christmas — somewhere between laughter and tears and excitement. Then again, at a Yesudas concert. I have tofall in love first, and more the attraction, the more I learn.

What made you take up the drums?I actually started to play classical piano at the age of four and was very serious about it, practising many hours a day. When I came into my rebellious teens, I wanted to stop. But my mother made a deal with me: I could take up anotherinstrument if I continued with the piano. Of course, I picked the loudest, most annoying instrument I could find just tomess with her… I never expected to fall in love with it, but it happened. I started to play in various bands, and after highschool I went to study Jazz drums and then moved to New York to work as a Jazz drummer.Tell us about your Konnakol experience…I remember my first rehearsal with T.V.G. I came in, expecting to work on the instruments. But everybody just sat onthe floor and did the konnakol (vocal percussion) together. It blew my mind and I was in shock trying to figure outwhat do with the drum kit and all those syllables.Nowadays, everything I do, no matter what style, I transfer it to Konnakol in my head. That has totally changed andimproved my way of thinking about rhythms. It was quite a challenge to perform it or develop any kind of speed as Icome from Bavaria where the dialect is very lazy. We are famous for not opening our mouth unless it is absolutelynecessary and we avoid wasting energy by talking fast and just leave out half of the consonants. Not very Konnakolfriendly! What can the audience expect from your music? An official response would be ‘a blend of solid Jazz rock and funk grooves, combined with the sophisticated intricaciesof Indian rhythms. My music uses Indian ragas as well as Western harmonics and melodics’. But, in simpler words, Iwant my music to be an experience for body and mind. It should be accessible, groovy and fun and with somethingdeeper. Both, modern Jazz and Indian classical music are very deep and intellectually developed art forms and that iswhy I find them fascinating. So, I am trying not to lose that, and am combining the two worlds with as much knowledgeand respect as possible.Do share some anecdotes about your work with Indian musicians. You have worked with classicalmusicians as well as a Bollywood music director…My first tour in 1996 with T.V.G. is engraved in my memory. T.V.G. Sir is someone who likes to keep you on your toes.Just when you think you know something well, he changes everything, preferably on stage!Working in the studio with modern movie producers is very similar to the work at home. The procedure, working withbacking tracks and clicks is the same. But working with old school music directors, who often composed music on thespot in the studio and kept throwing stuff at you that you had to play perfectly on the spot, was an experience. I have toadmit, that in combination with complex Indian structures, it had me in quite a sweat!PerformersKeyboard: Ronnie MonsorateTrumpet: Joseph Monsorate Bosco Monsorate and Premsingh SodhaTrombone: Blasco MonsorateDrums: Rex MonsorateSaxophone: Sashikant GaokarOther performers: Nitin Jadhav, Milind Dabholkar, Kishor Narkhede, Deepkumar Rane, Ravindra More, PrasadMalandkar, Kiran Shembekar, Sandeep Shah, Dr. Ajit Deval, Ananya Bhowmick, Nitin Chavan, Pravin Ayare, EffieMonsorate, Natty Monsorate.Tickets:Rs. 400, Rs. 250 & Rs. 150.
