In assembling this program for the Soundsof India series he is curating for the WhiteLight Festival, Mark Morris has includedtwo rarely seen works from the earliestyears of his career, in which he nowpasses on his own roles to his companydancers. Created several months apart,during a prolific period when Morris wasfirst attracting serious critical attention andearning praise as a dynamic force movingmodern dance into a bold new future, bothThe “Tamil Film Songs in Stereo” Pas deDeux and O Rangasayee are set to record-ings of Indian music. Both were originallyshowcases for Morris’s own exceptionaland distinctive powers as a dancer.

Morris had traveled to India for the firsttime in 1981, on tour as a member of LauraDean’s company, and his experiencesthere—particularly in terms of the musicand dance forms he encountered—had amajor impact. He has returned regularlythrough the decades, immersing himself inthe nation’s art forms, particularly itswealth of musical styles.

Morris especially admired the eminentvocalist M. S. Subbulakshmi (1916–2004),a leading exponent of the Carnatic south-ern Indian style. He set O Rangasayee, a1984 solo, to her recording of a 23-minuteraga by Sri Tyagaraja. Wearing a white loin-cloth, Morris moved with hypnotic focusthrough subtly shaded repeating phrasesas he embodied both sensual delight andreligious fervor. These White Light perfor-mances mark the first time the solo hasbeen performed since its premiere.

Morris cut a distinctly comic figure—imperious and impatient—in The “TamilFilm Songs in Stereo” Pas de Deux,where he translated into dance terms avocal lesson in which a male instructorgrows increasingly impatient and fiercewith a struggling female student.

According to Morris’s biographer JoanAcocella, he had bought a tape of themusic from a street vendor in Singapore.He deftly translated its vivid vocalexchanges into a concise, comic mini-drama that Arlene Croce described as“the funniest comic turn in dance today.”

Serenade, a solo set to Lou Harrison’s five-movement Serenade for Guitar, was cre-ated two decades after these early works.By 2003, Morris had choreographed anumber of dances to Harrison’s music; hefelt a strong affinity for the American com-poser and developed a friendship and col-laboration with him, commissioning anoriginal score in 1997.

Multiple cultural and ethnic influencesflowed through Harrison’s compositions,and Morris particularly responded to hisscores’ rhythmic ingenuity and complexity.In an essay about the creation of this solofor the New York Times, Morris wrote thatthe Serenade for Guitar “is a piece ofmusic I have been drawn back to over theyears. It is so tender and finely webbed, soall over the world, that I realized it could bethe basis of a new kind of dance.”

Morris was in his mid-40s when he chore-ographed and performed Serenade, whichhas a ceremonial formality evocative of various Eastern cultures; its costume sug-gests a Japanese influence. Each sectionis a self-contained mini-portrait inspired bythe intricate rhythms. Morris incorporatedfinger cymbals and castanets in the finaltwo sections, further embodying thescore’s rhythmic essences.

Because he has always been a forward-looking choreographer, with a new projector commission on his schedule, Morris isincluding a world premiere for 12 dancersalongside this compendium of olderworks. Pure Dance Items is the title Morrishas chosen—as though to discourage anyinquiries, god forbid, as to what the dancemay be “about.”

He is choreographing to six sections of TerryRiley’s 1986 Salome Dances for Peace, afull-evening string quartet composition cre-ated for the Kronos Quartet. In a 1990 NewYork Times article about Riley, K. RobertSchwarz wrote that the expansive composi-tion “mingles Asian modes, static drones,Arabic melodic arabesques and non-tempered tunings with dissonant Bartókiancounterpoint, bluesy inflections, jazzy synco-pations, and Minimalist repetition.”

This premiere marks the first time Morrishas turned to this seminal and influentialAmerican composer, who for much of hiscareer prioritized spontaneity and improvi-sation over formal composition. Riley alsodevoted considerable energy to investigat-ing non-Western musical forms. In 1970 he traveled to India to study with the vocal-ist Pandit Pran Nath, and following thatbegan “setting aside a large amount of

time for my studies in North Indian classi-cal music,” he told Schwarz.

So there is clearly a fascinating meeting ofartistic sensibilities at work for this pre-miere. In addition to his deep musical so -phistication, which has enriched his exten-sive catalogue of works, Morris has alwaysbeen receptive to, and appreciative of, abroad range of cultural influences and tradi-tions, finding ways to express his apprecia-tion and respect through creations that aredistinctly his own.

Meet the Artists

Mark Morris was born on August 29, 1956,in Seattle, where he studied with VerlaFlowers and Perry Brunson. In the earlyyears of his career, he performed with thecompanies of Lar Lubovitch, Hannah Kahn,Laura Dean, and Eliot Feld, as well as theKoleda Balkan Dance Ensemble. He formedthe Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) in1980, and has since created over 150 worksfor the company. From 1988 to 1991 he wasdirector of dance at La Monnaie, and in 1990he founded the White Oak Dance Projectwith Mikhail Baryshnikov. Mr. Morris hascreated 20 ballets since 1986, and his workhas been performed by companies world-wide, including American Ballet Theatre,Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, andthe Royal New Zealand and San FranciscoBallets. He began conducting perfor-mances for MMDG in 2006 and has sinceconducted at Tanglewood Music Center,Lincoln Center, and Brooklyn Academy ofMusic. He served as music director for the2013 Ojai Music Festival. He also worksextensively in opera, directing and choreo-graphing productions for the MetropolitanOpera, New York City Opera, EnglishNational Opera, and the Royal OperaHouse, Covent Garden, among others.

Mr. Morris was named a MacArthur Fellowin 1991 and has received 11 honorary doc-torates to date. He is a member of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciencesand the American Philosophical Society,and has served as an advisory board mem-ber for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé ArtsInitiative. Mr. Morris has received the

Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festi -val Award for Lifetime Achievement, theLeonard Bernstein Lifetime AchievementAward for the Elevation of Music inSociety, the Creativity Foundation’sLaureate Prize, the International Societyfor the Performing Arts’s DistinguishedArtist Award, the Cal Performances Awardof Distinction in the Performing Arts, theOrchestra of St. Luke’s Gift of Musicaward, and a 2016 Doris Duke ArtistAward. In 2015 Mr. Morris was inductedinto the Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius VanderbiltWhitney Hall of Fame at the NationalMuseum of Dance. He opened the MarkMorris Dance Center in Brooklyn in 2001.

Mark Morris Dance GroupThe Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG)was formed in 1980 and gave its first per-formance that year in New York City. Thecompany’s touring schedule has steadilyexpanded to include cities around theworld, and in 1986 it made its first nationaltelevision program for the PBS seriesGreat Performances: Dance in America. In1988, MMDG was invited to become thenational dance company of Belgium andspent three years in residence at LaMonnaie, returning to the U.S. as one ofthe world’s leading dance companies in1991. Based in Brooklyn, MMDG appearsregularly in New York, Boston, Seattle, andFairfax. The company has performed atNew York City Center’s Fall for DanceFestival and Lincoln Center’s White LightFestival, and collaborates yearly withBrooklyn Academy of Music on perfor-mances and master classes. This yearmarked the 12th MMDG performance atthe Mostly Mozart Festival, and the com-pany’s return to the White Light Festival.From the company’s many London sea-sons, it has received two Laurence OlivierAwards and a Critics’ Circle National DanceAward for Best Foreign Dance Company.

MMDG Music EnsembleThe MMDG Music Ensemble, formed in1996, is integral to the Dance Group. Theensemble’s repertory ranges from 17th-and 18th-century works by John Wilsonand Henry Purcell to more recent scores byLou Harrison and Henry Cowell. The musi-cians also participate in Access/MMDG,the Dance Group’s educational and com-munity programming at home and on tour.The Music Ensemble is led by Colin Fowler,who began to collaborate with MMDG in2005 during the creation of Mozart Dances.

Robert BelinicRobert Belinic (guitar) is the only guitaristever to have been chosen for the YoungConcert Artists roster. He has performedextensively in Europe and in the U.S., withperformances at Carnegie Hall’s WeillRecital Hall, 92nd Street Y, Merkin ConcertHall, Morgan Library, Alice Tully Hall, SpiveyHall, the Kennedy Center, and IsabellaStewart Gardner Museum. Mr. Belinic holdsgraduate degrees from the Leopold MozartHochschule für Musik in Augsburg, Germany,where he studied with Franz Halász, andfrom the Manhattan School of Music, wherehe worked with David Starobin. Mr. Belinicwas the winner of Manhattan School of

Music’s Concerto Competition, andreceived the school’s coveted AndrésSegovia/Rose Augustine Award.

Stefan SchatzStefan Schatz (percussion) was born inNew York City. After training early on as aclassical percussionist, he went on tostudy jazz at the New School. Mr. Schatzhas worked with jazz greats Dakota Staton,Jon Hendricks, Arnie Lawrence, HermanFoster, Teddy Charles, and Freddie Redd,and has toured internationally with theChris Byars/Ari Roland Quartet, Jazz atLincoln Center, Manhattan Tap, and MarkMorris Dance Group. He has played ontelevision and film soundtracks, commer-cials, numerous albums, and severalBroadway shows. Mr. Schatz participatedin the 2010 Grammy Award–winning HighWide & Handsome: The Charlie PooleProject, by Loudon Wainwright III.

Georgy ValtchevGeorgy Valtchev (violin) has appeared assoloist, recitalist, and chamber musicianthroughout the U.S, Europe, and Asia.Originally from Bulgaria, he came to the U.S.in 1992 as a scholarship student of DorothyDelay and Masao Kawasaki at The JuilliardSchool, where he earned his bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees. As a soloist, he has beenheard with orchestras in Boston, Chicago,Dallas, Miami, and New York, and inBangor, Bulgaria, and Japan. Since 2011,Mr. Valtchev has been a guest concertmas-ter of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.He has been featured in such festivals asLincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival,Sofia Music Weeks, Varna SummerInternational Music Festival in Bulgaria, andBåstad Chamber Music Festival inSweden. He is a founding member ofBulgarian Concert Evenings in New York.

Anna LuceAnna Luce (violin) is a modern and Baroqueviolinist residing in Manhattan. Since completing her master’s degree in music atthe University of Texas at Austin, she has

Ms. Luce regularly per-forms with the American BaroqueOrchestra, Bach Players at Holy TrinityLutheran Church in New York, Mark MorrisDance Group, and in the pit for Hamiltonon Broadway.

Jessica TroyJessica Troy (viola) wears a variety of free-lance hats. She has toured extensivelywith the MMDG Music Ensemble, includ-ing performances with Yo-Yo Ma. OnBaroque viola she performs with SebastianChamber Players, Trinity Baroque Or -chestra, Clarion, Opera Lafayette, and hasappeared with Renée Fleming on LateNight with David Letterman. A member ofthe Orchestra of St. Luke’s, WestchesterPhilharmonic, and New York City OperaOrchestra, she performs frequently withmany other ensembles, including theMostly Mozart Festival Orchestra andNovus NY. She has recorded for Lou Reedand Ani DiFranco, performed on TV withWhitney Houston, and on film with DavidByrne. A participant in events includingTanglewood, Spoleto, and Marlboro festi-vals, Ms. Troy can be heard on Marlboro’s50th anniversary CD in György Kurtág’sMicroludes for string quartet, which sheprepared with the composer.

Michael HaasMichael Haas (cello) is a member of theacclaimed Momenta Quartet. Known forits adventurous programming, Momentahas performed at the Library of Congressand the National Gallery, received twoKoussevitzky Fund commissions, andreleased its debut album on AlbanyRecords in 2015. Mr. Haas also performsregularly with the Orchestra of St. Luke’sand Princeton Symphony, and holds

degrees from the Curtis Institute of Musicand The Juilliard School.

Sam BlackSam Black is originally from Berkeley,California, where he began studying tap atage nine with Katie Maltsberger. Hereceived his bachelor of fine arts degree indance from Purchase College, and cur-rently teaches Mark Morris Dance Groupmaster classes and Dance for PD. He firstappeared with MMDG in 2005 andbecame a company member in 2007.

Durell R. ComedyDurell R. Comedy, a native of PrinceGeorge’s County, Maryland, began dancingat age six with Spirit Wings DanceCompany. He graduated magna cum laudefrom George Mason University, receivinghis bachelor of fine arts degree in danceperformance in 2008. Since then, he hasperformed at the Metropolitan Opera andworked with Troy Powell and KyleAbraham, among others. Mr. Comedy wasa member of Limón Dance Company from2009 to 2015, performing principal andsoloist roles. He has also worked as asoloist dancer with the Baltimore Operaand was a principal dancer and dance cap-tain with Washington National Opera from2013 to 2014. He was an adjunct facultymember at George Mason University’sSchool of Dance in 2014 and was recentlyawarded George Mason University’sCollege of Visual and Performing ArtsThomas W. Iszard III Distinguished AlumniAward. Mr. Comedy began working as anapprentice with the Mark Morris DanceGroup in 2015 and became a companymember in 2016.

Domingo Estrada, Jr.Domingo Estrada, Jr., a native of Victoria,Texas, danced ballet folklórico through hischurch for 11 years. He earned his bache-lor of fine arts degree in ballet and moderndance from Texas Christian University andworked with Fernando Bujones. During hisundergraduate studies, he attended theAmerican Dance Festival and performedSky Light, a classic work by choreographerLaura Dean. He debuted with the MarkMorris Dance Group in 2007 and became acompany member in 2009.

Lesley Garrison Lesley Garrison grew up in Swansea,Illinois and received her early dance trainingat the Center of Creative Arts in Missouriand Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.She studied at the Codarts Rotterdam inthe Netherlands and holds a bachelor offine arts degree from Purchase College.She first performed with the Mark MorrisDance Group in 2007 and became a com-pany member in 2011. Ms. Garrisonteaches at the School at the Mark MorrisDance Center and Dance for PD.

Lauren Grant Lauren Grant has danced with the MarkMorris Dance Group since 1996, appearingin nearly 60 of Mark Morris’s works. She ison the faculty at The School at the MarkMorris Dance Center, leads master classesaround the globe, sets Morris’s work at uni-versities, and frequently leads classes forthe company. In 2015 Ms. Grant received aBessie Award for Sustained Achievementin Performance. She has been featured inAmy Nathan’s book Meet the Dancers:From Ballet, Broadway, and Beyond, aswell as in Time Out New York and DanceMagazine. She has appeared in PBS’sGreat Performances series, Live From

Lincoln Center, and ITV’s The South BankShow. Before joining MMDG, Ms. Grantmoved to New York City from her home-town of Highland Park, Illinois, and earneda bachelor of fine arts degree from NewYork University’s Tisch School of the Arts.She is currently pursuing her master of finearts degree at Montclair State University.

Brian Lawson Brian Lawson began his dance training inToronto at Canadian Children’s DanceTheatre. There he worked with choreogra-phers David Earle, Carol Anderson, andMichael Trent. Mr. Lawson spent a yearstudying at Codarts Rotterdam in theNetherlands and graduated summa cumlaude in 2010 from Purchase College,where he was also granted the President’sAward for his contributions to the danceprogram. Mr. Lawson has had the pleasureof performing with Pam Tanowitz Dance,Dance Heginbotham, and Nelly vanBommel’s NØA Dance, among others. Hejoined the Mark Morris Dance Group as anapprentice in 2011 and became a companymember in 2013.

Aaron LouxAaron Loux grew up in Seattle, Wash -ington, and began dancing at the CreativeDance Center as a member of Kaleido -scope Dance Company, a youth moderndance ensemble. He began his classicaltraining at the Cornish Preparatory DanceProgram and received his bachelor of finearts degree from The Juilliard School in2009. He danced at the MetropolitanOpera and with ARC Dance Companybefore joining the Mark Morris DanceGroup in 2010.

Laurel LynchLaurel Lynch began her dance training atCalifornia’s Petaluma School of Ballet. Shemoved to New York to attend The JuilliardSchool, where she performed works byRobert Battle, Margie Gillis, José Limón,and Ohad Naharin. After graduation, Ms.Lynch danced for Dušan Týnek Dance

Stacy MartoranaStacy Martorana began her dance trainingin Baltimore, Maryland at PeabodyPreparatory. In 2006 she graduated fromthe University of North Carolina School ofthe Arts with a bachelor of fine arts degreein contemporary dance. She has dancedwith the Amy Marshall Dance Company,Neta Dance Company, Helen SimoneauDanse, Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater,Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, andRashaun Mitchell. From 2009 to 2011 shewas a member of the Merce CunninghamDance Company’s Repertory UnderstudyGroup. She joined the Mark Morris DanceGroup in 2012.

Dallas McMurrayDallas McMurray is from El Cerrito,California and began dancing at age four,studying jazz, tap, and acrobatics with KatieMaltsberger and ballet with YukikoSakakura. He received a bachelor of finearts degree in dance from the CaliforniaInstitute of the Arts. He has performed withthe Limón Dance Company, in addition toappearing in works by Jiří Kylián, AlonzoKing, Robert Moses, and Colin Connor. Mr.McMurray performed with the Mark MorrisDance Group as an apprentice in 2006 andbecame a company member in 2007.

Brandon RandolphBrandon Randolph began his training withCarolina Ballet Theatre in Greenville, SouthCarolina, under the direction of HernanJusto. At age 14, he was accepted into theSouth Carolina Governor’s School for theArts and Humanities, where he studiedwith Stanislav Issaev and Robert Barnett.Mr. Randolph received his bachelor of finearts degree in dance from PurchaseCollege in 2012. There he had the opportu-nity to perform with Dance Heginbotham,as well as repertory by Stephen Petronio,

Lar Lubovitch, Paul Taylor, and GeorgeBalanchine. Mr. Randolph began workingwith the Mark Morris Dance Group in 2013and became a company member in 2014.

Nicole SabellaNicole Sabella is from Clearwater, Florida,where she studied at the Academy of BalletArts and the Pinellas County Center for theArts at Gibbs High School under Suzanne B.Pomerantzeff. In 2009 she graduated fromPhiladelphia’s University of the Arts, earningher bachelor of fine arts degree in danceand the Outstanding Performance inModern Dance Award. She was a per-former with Zane Booker’s Smoke, Liliesand Jade Arts Initiative. Ms. Sabella firstperformed with the Mark Morris DanceGroup in 2013 and became a companymember in 2015.

Billy SmithBilly Smith grew up in Fredericksburg,Virginia, and attended George MasonUniversity under a full academic and dancescholarship. He graduated magna cumlaude in 2007 and received achievementawards in performance, choreography, andacademic endeavors. While at GeorgeMason, he performed the works of MarkMorris, Paul Taylor, Lar Lubovitch, DougVarone, Daniel Ezralow, Larry Keigwin,Susan Marshall, and Susan Shields. Mr.Smith’s piece 3-Way Stop was selected toopen the 2006 American College DanceFestival Association gala at Ohio StateUniversity, and his original choreographyfor a production of Bye Bye Birdie garneredcritical praise. He is an actor as well, andhis regional theater credits include Tulsa inGypsy, Mister Mistoffelees in Cats, andDream Curly in Oklahoma! Mr. Smithdanced with Parsons Dance from 2007 to2010. He joined the Mark Morris DanceGroup as a company member in 2010.

Noah VinsonNoah Vinson is originally from Springfield,Illinois, and received his bachelor of artsdegree in dance from Columbia College

Chicago. He was recognized by DanceMagazine as an upcoming talent in 2009and assisted Mark Morris in the creation ofhis most recent work for Houston Ballet,The Letter V, which premiered in 2015. Hebegan dancing with the Mark MorrisDance Group in 2002 and became a com-pany member in 2004.

Jenn WeddelJenn Weddel received her early trainingfrom Boulder Ballet Company near whereshe grew up in Longmont, Colorado. Sheholds a bachelor of fine arts degree fromSouthern Methodist University and alsostudied at the Boston Conservatory,University of Colorado, and Trinity LabanConservatoire of Music and Dance in Lon -don. Since moving to New York in 2001, shehas created and performed with Red WallDance Theatre, Sue Bernhard Danceworks,Vencl Dance Trio, and Rocha Dance Theater,as well as with choreographers AlanDanielson and Ella Ben-Aharon. Ms.Weddel performed with the Mark MorrisDance Group as an apprentice in 2006 andbecame a company member in 2007.

Michelle YardMichelle Yard was born in Brooklyn. Shebegan her professional dance training atthe Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School ofMusic & Art and Performing Arts and con-tinued her studies at Alvin Ailey AmericanDance Theater. She graduated with a bach-elor of fine arts degree from New YorkUniversity’s Tisch School of the Arts. Ms.Yard teaches Pilates as well as masterclasses for Access/MMDG. She joined theMark Morris Dance Group in 1997.

Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay CollegeJohn Jay College of Criminal Justice of theCity University of New York, an interna-tional leader in educating for justice, offersa rich liberal arts and professional studiescurriculum to upwards of 15,000 under-graduate and graduate students from more

than 135 nations. In teaching, scholarshipand research, the college approaches jus-tice as an applied art and science in serviceto society and as an ongoing conversationabout fundamental human desires for fair-ness, equality, and the rule of law.

Since opening its doors in 1988, the GeraldW. Lynch Theater has been an invaluablecultural resource for John Jay College andthe larger New York City community. Thetheater is dedicated to the creation andpresentation of performing arts program-ming of all disciplines with a special focuson how the artistic imagination can shedlight on the many perceptions of justice inour society. The theater is also a memberof CUNY Stages, a consortium of 16 per-forming arts centers located on CUNYcampuses across New York City.

The Gerald W. Lynch Theater has hostedevents in the Lincoln Center Festival sinceits first season in 1996, as well as perfor-mances by the Lincoln Center’s GreatPerformers series, New York City Opera,Gotham Chamber Opera, MetropolitanOpera Guild, and Alvin Ailey AmericanDance Theater/Ailey II.
