Hypertension is thought to be responsible for 50 million deaths per year nationwide. It's a major risk factor forstroke, heart attacks, heart failure and peripheral vascular disease.

Many studies have shown that patients with systolic blood pressures (the top number) below 140 have a lowerrisk of heart disease and death than those above 140.

Results of the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) represent a game-changer in the field ofhypertension. The study, presented to the American Heart Association, shows that patients who maintained ablood pressure of 120 or less had a 25 percent lower risk of heart failure, heart attack, stroke and cardiovasculardeath than those whose blood pressure was maintained at 140. They had a 43 percent lower risk of cardiovasculardeath and 27 percent lower risk of death from any cause than those whose target systolic blood pressure was140.

Lowering blood pressure can be difficult. In order to reach the 120 systolic level, some patients could need morethan one medication.

In the SPRINT trial some patients who were able to reach 120 suffered adverse effects, such as fainting andkidney problems. But the trial has been called "one of the most important achievements of 2015."

Researchers at Duke Medicine say the 120 number is no magic bullet. It was chosen because it was significantlylower than 140.

What the trial did show was that bringing systolic blood pressure levels down below 140 can be beneficial inmany ways as long as it's done safely.

In some previous generations, fathers played a limited role in raising their children. Mothers wereexpected to keep the kids clean, quiet and out of the way so fathers could do other things. Today'sfathers have changed the basics of family life because they want to be instrumental in raising theirchildren. Today's mothers are also different. Whether for self-fulfillment or economic factors, theyare in the workforce as well. They celebrate fathers and the positive effects they have on their children.

Being a father sounds like a very serious matter, and it is. But how dads play with their youngchildren has big positive effects. Their goofy teasing and hyper play actually help young childrendevelop, according to new research.

Dads are an important factor in helping their daughters and sons grow self-confidence and developingresilience. They encourage kids differently. For example, a dad helps a child learn by pretending hedoesn't know how to play a game and letting the child teach him. Mothers tend to guide childrentoward new skills, according to Katherine Kerns, a professor of psychology at Kent State Universityin Ohio. Fathers challenge a child to try difficult tasks that seem hard, while mothers tend to praisethem for trying. Dr. Kerns says dads can be good with babies. They engage them with surprising, warm interaction, while mothers use gentle cooing to communicate.

The U.S. Department of Education reports that father involvement in schools is associated with thelikelihood of a student getting higher grades. This was true for fathers in biological parent families, for stepfathers, and those heading single-parent families.Fe

The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback; I don’t think of myself asold. Upon seeing my reaction, the woman was immediately embarrassed. I then explained that it was an interestingquestion and I would ponder it.

Old age, I decided, is a gift. I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted tobe. Oh, not my body, of course! The wrinkles, the baggy eyes, skin spots and bumps, the sagging butt, and - - -.Often I am taken aback by that old person who lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for verylong. This is God’s plan for us.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself and less critical of myself. I’ve finally become my own friend and I likeher.

I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly trinket. I amentitled to overeat, to be messy and to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comeswith aging. I dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50’s and if at the same time wish to weep over alost love, I will.

I will walk the beach in a swimsuit that is stretched over a bulging body and will dive into the waves with abandonif I choose to despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. Oh yes, they too, will eventually look like me.

I know I am often forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. Eventually I remember theimportant things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one or whena child suffers or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength andunderstanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of beingimperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray and to have my youthful laughs be foreveretched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair couldturn silver.

Most importantly, I think that by living this many years, I have finally begun to understand a bit about why weare all here; why we were gifted to walk the pathways we have trod and maybe glimpse a bit of God’s plan for nowand later. I have been truly blessed.

So, to answer the question: I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going tolive forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been or worrying about whatwill be. And---I shall eat a bit of the “dessert of life” every single day! (Author unknown – an email forward5-05)

***I’d like to thank the person who wrote this article because she has fed us some challenging food for thought. Todaylet’s all rethink our own attitudes about aging. If they are less than positive, let’s turn those thoughts around sothat each and every day that we are given will be a precious gift for which we truly give thanks and receive withgratitude each and every morning as we awaken.
