When Face, scheming servant and self-styled master conman, is left in sole charge of his gentleman’s London town house, he calls in his not-so-trusty fellow tricksters, the slimy Subtle and irresistible Dol.

Dispensing spurious charms and promises of gold, they whip the vain and greedy sucker list of London society into a frenzy of get-rich-quickery.

But when they mistakenly target a fellow hustler, the sticky-fingered trio are in danger of coming unstuck.

Ben Jonson’s 17th century satirical farce will be spun into pure comedy gold in the hands of rising star director Robert Icke.

A DAY OF PLEASUREStories of a Boy Growing Up in WarsawWorld Première TourDirected by Neil Sissons

THU 4 OCT TO SAT 6 OCT

My childhood lasted 14 years and 11 days. It started on Thursday August 22nd 1968 and ended on Thursday September 2nd 1982…

When Hugh Hughes returned to his childhood home in Llangefni to help his mum pack and move house, a tapestry of memories from his past, his family and the town he once called home began to unfold...

His memories have grown and grown - bursting from Hugh’s head and into a website for us to explore and enjoy (www.invisibletownstories.co.uk). Now audiences have the chance to join Hugh, his brother and his sister, as family skeletons leave their closets in this unpredictable and hilarious evening of family stories. Each night, the Hughes family tell us about the good times, the not so good times and everything in between.

“Few performers provoke such a warm response from an audience as Hughes.” The Times

New York. 1978. The cab driver is waiting to take him to the airport. The evening before he travels to Stockholm to collect the Nobel Prize for Literature, Isaac Bashevis Singer – a passionate, brilliant storyteller – recalls a fascinating childhood full of mystery, torment and adventure.

A Day of Pleasure is about more than a young boy growing up in a strange and exotic world; it is about growing up itself. Singer brings to life the vivid characters of pre-war Warsaw, his own character and the human conditions that affect us all. Performed by Stuart Richman; a founding member of the Liverpool Everyman.

“Only the dreamers, who dream while awake, call back the shadows of the past and braid from unspun threads, unspun nets.” Isaac Bashevis Singer

THE SACRED FLAMEBy Somerset Maugham Director Matthew Dunster

TUE 16 TO SAT 20 OCT

What happened on the night the young Great War hero, Maurice Tabret, died at home in his bed? His doctor says he died from natural causes, but his nurse points a finger of suspicion at his beautiful wife, Stella...

Putting a twist on the classic murder mystery, this part thriller, part love story is by the enduringly popular playwright and novelist, Somerset Maugham, in a vivid new production directed by Matthew Dunster (Mogadishu).

Somerset Maugham is known mostly for his celebrated novels Of Human Bondage, The Letter, Rain and The Razor’s Edge.

The Sacred Flame is presented by English Touring Theatre whose recent work includes our co-productions of Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac.

“English, Touring and Theatre are three wonderful words. Put together they are more wonderful still.” Sir Ian McKellen

EVERYWORD 2012The Playhouse and Studio will be buzzing again this October with another week of events, rehearsed readings, and workshops as part of our annual Everyword festival.

Everyword is the most celebratory moment in our year-round mission to nurture new voices and new stories. This packed festival provides an opportunity for our stable of Liverpool writers to meet, talk and work with inspiring writers and producers from around the country, and for fledgling plays to make their first connection with an audience.

The festival has previously included first public readings of many plays that went on to full production, such as Unprotected, Intemperance, Lost Monsters, The Swallowing Dark and this autumn’s Held by Joe Ward Munrow.

Full details of this year’s events will be announced in September.

“All writers need inspiration as well as a sense of community. The Everyword annual festival of new writing offers both.” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

A long distance race. Real time. Follow one runner, alone with his thoughts. Colin is defiant. A young rebel, inhabiting the no-man’s land of detention centres and young offenders’ institutes, as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh, frost-bitten earth.

Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams OBE (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads), this gritty adaptation unlocks the biting realism of Alan Sillitoe’s classic novel while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame.

Stunning visuals by leading video artists KMA are incorporated into an exciting design to follow Colin’s race and unpick his thoughts as we join his journey.

Kneehigh Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse presentRay Galton & Alan Simpson’s

STEPTOE AND SONAdapted and Directed by Emma Rice

2 Men. 2 World Wars. 2 lives knitted together as tight as a thrice darned sock.

Bound together by birth, business and bloody bad luck, Albert and Harold Steptoe wake up every morning to the same old, same old, sickening sight of each other. Joined at the hip and heart, they bother, bicker and banter their way through life - toying with each other’s frailties like mean kittens.

Adapted from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, this new production charts the tender, cruel and surprising dance of father and son. Darkly comic, and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, re-imagined for the next generation.

”Surreal and hilarious.” Liverpool ECHO on Kneehigh’s Hansel & Gretel (2010)

‘Where there’s muck there’s brass’ … and this hysterically funny tale of misdeeds, misadventure and mistaken identity has plenty of both.

In a small Pennine town a flashy young stranger is mistaken for a Government Inspector. The town’s unscrupulous Councillors do all they can to ingratiate themselves. Bribes, backhanders and brown envelopes abound and the stranger, who has an eye for a quick buck, takes full advantage with hilarious results.

If you like your humour broad, your references topical, your heart warmed and your brass ‘live’, look no further than A Government Inspector. Absurdly funny, clever and strangely familiar, you’ll never trust your local authority again.

HELDBY JOE WARD MUNROW

A Mother. Two Brothers. Three Minds. Different Memories.

I don’t remember why it happened but I remember that it happened and that it was good. And that’s enough. That’s enough, the memories, however fragile they are all we’ve got, all that bind us.

Somewhere between the past and the present there is a truth. But who remembers best? And who is right?

A captivating story of the weave and weft of family life.

This first play by one our Everyman and Playhouse Young Writers graduates, Joe Ward Munrow’s Held received a rehearsed reading at Everyword 2011.

Many moons ago, when the giants ruled the earth. From far flung Fazakerley, to the depths of Aigburth.

Who wouldn’t tremble or cow…er with fright? When “Fee Fi Fo Fum!” roared through the night.

The villagers panicked and filled their trunks.Fled to the hills where they squatted with Monks.

But Mary from the dairy could not fall to her knees. She had to stay with her son, to churn out the cheese.

A hero was needed to end this dark war,And Jack and his cow Pat, drew the short straw.

Valour and Victory must rain down on Jack,So bring ya’ brolly and a nice anorak!

Climb on your platforms, scale the dizzy height,Bouffant your Bellbottoms and boogie all night!

It’s contagious, outrageous, let it all hang out!‘Cause this Giant adventure’s gonna twist & sprout!!!

With its trademark ‘thrust’ wrap-around auditorium, iconic red sign, basement Bistro and many new facilities, the whole building will be a vibrant, creative hub, by day and night.

The builders are busy on site, with a 36m tower crane, and the first walls are starting to appear.

You can follow progress via a webcam which is providing real-time footage and time-lapse pictures on our website at www.everymanplayhouse.com

Work is now well underway to create a beautiful, inspiring new incarnation of this much-loved and pioneering theatre.

A stunning portrait wall is being created from the images of people from across Liverpool who attended open photography sessions earlier this year. The images of these ‘extraordinary’ people will be etched onto shutters that will form the front of the new Everyman. The new building will be a wonderful thing. But that’s not the end of the story. Inside it we’ll be able to involve more young people, foster Liverpool’s extraordinary range of creative talent, and train and support the actors, writers, directors and craftspeople who will stimulate and delight us for decades to come.

Now we need your help to raise the final piece of funding to make your beautiful new Everyman, and everything that happens inside it, the best it can be.

Accessible Performances Audio description is a live verbal commentary giving information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It’s great for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to see the details of a performance; you don’t have to be blind to make use of audio description. A description of the setting, costumes and a full touch tour of the set are also available before the performance starts.

Captioning is similar totelevision subtitling and converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit situated on or next to the stage. The captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. Captioning is a great way for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking to still enjoy coming to the theatre.

British Sign Language Interpreted performance.

We believe everyone, no matter what their age or experience, should have the opportunity to enjoy great theatre. Look out for the following symbols on show pages and in the diary at the back.
