Honorary Memoriam
From the Resident Artistic Director
Earlier this season we presented Joe DiPietro’s powerful The Second Mrs. Wilson, a real life historical drama about two very fascinating and complicated people: Edith Galt Wilson and her husband, President Woodrow Wilson. The very enthusiastic response to that play was a testament to our audience’s desire for new plays, the presentation of which is a significant part of George Street’s mission.
You’ll understand, then, how excited we are to be following up that production with our current offering, Nureyev’s Eyes.
David Rush’s beautiful play is also about two very real people. However, the world in which his characters – international ballet star Rudolph Nureyev and painter Jamie Wyeth – find themselves is as far from the White House as you can get. This story of two great artists who struggle to find the truth in themselves and in their work, and who fight the good fight to see that work realized, makes for a fascinating story. The passion, talent, humor and artistic commitment at play between these two singular men over the course of their 18 year friendship ignite many a creative fire for each of them.
Enjoy!

Capturing nureyev:
James Wyeth paints the dancer“Wyeth was well known for his portraits of animals as well as for his portraits of celebrities and he found the perfect melding of both in Nureyev. The dancer had a dangerous, feral quality about him, and an infamous temper that could flare, and then just as quickly disappear. Yet there was also a sweet, childlike aspect to the dancer that was evident to those who knew him well.
Although Nureyev was one of the most photographed dancers of the time, Wyeth felt there were aspects of the dancer that had not been seen and could not be captured with photography. Wyeth commented, ‘I spent hours just watching Nureyev practice, and did hundreds…of studies of him, purely because I was dying to record him. He was enig-matic, a very complex individual.’
Nureyev was Wyeth’s most difficult model. Although Nureyev had agreed to pose for the portrait, Wyeth found it nearly impossible to get the busy dancer to interrupt his schedule for the sittings.
Wyeth recalled, in desperation, asking another dancer with a similar frame to stand in for the initial studies. Nuryev was highly sensitive about the way his body was por-trayed. He was enraged when he found about the substitute model and he began regularly scheduled sittings immediately. Wyeth noted, ‘If I did a drawing of his toe, he wanted to see if it was correct. Finally we had this great argument and I had to explain, “Rudolf, you’re interpretive in your dance and many of these drawings are interpretive too.”’
Although temperamentally very different, Wyeth and Nureyev found common ground; each was obsessed with his craft. Both artists started with traditional training before finding their own, more interpretive methods of expression. It would take several years for the busy dancer to agree to pose for the painter, but the series of portraits that Wyeth created of Nureyev is an in-depth physical and psychological study of this intriguing personality.”
