In the business of solving other people's business problems, by offering and implementing the right technical solution for the job. A recent example:

The goodwill generated from the above work led to other opportunities…

• Build-out of their facility network to improve the per- formance of the main conference hall teleconference system.

• Expansion of their SonicWall Wi-Fi system, adding a ceiling mounted remote unit in the main hall.

• The Repair of their Polycom IP-PBX System.

After attending a public "meet and greet" business function, I was called by the president of the Iron Workers of America training center in Norfolk. He explained about some theft's at his facility. We scheduled a meeting, and in the meeting I proposed installing a multiple IP camera surveillance system. I also presented published stats sighting the effectiveness of this type of technology. They ordered a turnkey install. Interestingly enough before we completed the turn over to the customer, the system caught a perpetrator in the act of stealing.

The purpose of this project was to open up a section of RF spectrum between 1990-2025GHz, originally the bottom 2 channels of the Broadcast Auxiliary Service band. This new available spectrum for mobile satellite, LTE, and other applications.

The project involved the migration of existing analog systems to digital so as to compress the former 7 analog channels to a footprint of 5, leaving the bottom 2 channels open.

With regards to TV broadcasters, I led teams assisting to facilitate this transition. TV Broadcasters transition from operating in the original channel plan to the new channel plan involved a temporary, interim "Narrowed in Place" phase in which broadcasters operate new or upgraded equipment in the current channel plan using 12 MHz channels. From Narrowed in place, all broadcasters in a market relocated to the new seven channel plan (2025-2110 MHz). As in all things theory and real life rarely are the same. In many cases, TV broadcasters made the complete transition in one step instead of two.

PROJECT PHASE 1… ON SITE REMOTE FIELD AUDITS AND DOCUMENTATION:Most of the locations visited were remote TV transmitter sites. Shown to the right was the most remote site visited in the El Yunque National Park rain forest of Puerto Rico.

PROJECT PHASE 2 IMPLEMENTATION:The installations of new systems and the upgrading of others with digital capability. This included (but not limited to) new auto-tracking antennas, feeds/LNAs, digital radios, encoders, decoders, routers, switchers, touch screen controls.

Sprint-Nextel RF Spectrum Relocation Project

SUMMARY:

• Reported directly to the assigned VP for the Sprint-Nextel relocation project.

• Managed over 150 field audits to help determine needed upgrades, or complete change outs.

• Managed over 125 remote project sites, each valued at $175,000 to over $950,000.

• Configured over 50 PC-based remote control systems.

• Trained clients at over 50 sites.

* Managed 5-12 staff integrators and installers per project.

STAGING/INTEGRATION/TESTING:Due to the hostel environment these systems were going to operate in, it was decided up front to stage, integrate, and test them at our facilities in the US. In this way we could better control quality, workmanship, and tight deadlines.

TRANSPORTATION – LOGISTICS: From the US staging areas the equipment systems installed in shelters were shipped on flatbed trailers directly to the Norfolk Marine Terminal. To protect them from the ocean salty air and from being pitched overboard in a storm, the shelters were lowered inside the ship for safe travel to Haifa, Israel.

NEW FULL POWER VHF-TV TRANSMITTER PLANT:Since the site prep work (concrete pads, power generators and tower) was handled ahead of time, delivery and installation of the full power TV transmit plant site went quickly and smoothly.

REPLACEMENT BACKUP GENERATOR POWER PLANT: Due to very unreliable power, multiple generators with auto-switching were installed. The original backup power plant system is shown in the left picture. The new replacement system shown in the picture to the right.

2 HOP DUPLEXED LINK REPEATER SITE: Due to a mountain in line with the path between the studio and the transmitter sites, there was a non-protected duplex repeater site. The original bunker type shelter, tower, and microwave dish antennas are shown in the left picture. The right picture shows the new larger replacement shelter being delivered fully equipped, along with the new tower, and microwave dish antennas already in place.
