The Columbus Bar Foundation in its relatively short history has made over $4 million in grants. It is a 501c(3) organization and is classified as a 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) public charity that, in partnership with Columbus Bar Association, is committed to supporting:• Legal services for indigent clients through

grants to the Legal Aid Society, Community Mediation Services, Franklin County Municipal Court Self Help Center Resource Center and the CBA pro bono program

• Professionalism within the legal community through sophisticated CLE in partnership with the CBA

• New lawyers entering private practice through the Columbus Bar inc (incubator)

• Lawyers in need due to serious illness or tragic circumstances

All of this is possible because of the generosity of the Columbus legal community. The CBF can be one way for lawyers to give back to our community. Through thoughtful consideration of projects and grants, the Foundation tries to make sure that every gift, large or small, makes a difference in the lives of the people of this community. EXCELLENCEThe Chester Family Professionalism Fund was created to nurture professionalism within the central Ohio legal community. Most recently it was a lead sponsor for the sold-out Addicted Lawyer Seminar and a Columbus City Attorneys office training program in-part dealing with the opioid crisis; the CBA Bench Bar Retreat, the Path to the Bench Seminar and high-end litigation demonstrations.

The Carpenter Visitation and Memorial Fund was created to provide aid and comfort to lawyers who are seriously ill and to provide appropriate recognition to deceased members of the central Ohio legal community. The Lawyer to Lawyer Fund was created by a local lawyer to provide much needed financial assistance to central Ohio lawyers who are temporarily or permanently disabled due to illness or an accident or who have suffered some other type of adversity. Based on previous requests for financial assistance, it is anticipated that individual grants will be less than $10,000 and could include such needs as payment of health insurance premiums for a lawyer who is no longer able to work due to an accident or illness; paying the monthly office rent until a disabled attorney can return to work; establishing temporary offices because of fire or flooding; or hiring an attorney to review files and close cases for an attorney who has been mentally or physically disabled.

The Jack R. Alton Family Fund currently recognizes outstanding lifetime achievement by local trial advocates. Recent recipients of the Alton Award were Rick Marsh and Bradley Hummel. The newly created Fund will also support the legal education of academically promising minority law students; and support the work of volunteer lawyers who visit sick and dying colleagues.

The Elam Family Fund recognizes outstanding commitment by an individual to pro bono services in Ohio. Past recipients are: Community Legal Aid Services, Inc , Grace Presbyterian Church, James Feibel, Douglas Rogers, Judge John Hoffman, Grace Hoffman, Riley Crandall, Susan Choe, Thomas E. Cafferty, Ann Bergen and David Kutik. In addition to the award, a donation of $5,000 is made in honor of the recipient to a charity of their choice.

The Columbus Bar Association Fund supports the specific philanthropic interests of the Columbus Bar. In 2009 it seeded the CBA inc Program with a two-year grant to assist newly admitted attorneys to position themselves for legal jobs in a difficult economy. The grant will be used to develop programs and services that are of interest to new lawyers. A portion of the program will be to train the new lawyers to handle court appointments, low fee, and pro bono cases.

The Alex Lagusch Administration of Justice Fund was created in 2010 to nurture excellence in Franklin County Court operations, with a special emphasis on programs that promote collaboration between the courts and the bar. The Fund will be used to support operational improvements, operations assessments, judicial and staff development programs, and other initiatives aimed at helping the courts to better serve the people of central Ohio.

Some Funds have been established to promote excellence within the CBA’s continuing legal education program such as the Theodore L. Horst Memorial Fund which supports the Capital University Adoption Program and the Columbus Bar Association’s CLE program in the areas of estate planning and probate law and the Hugh Holton Memorial Fund which supports the CBA’s Real Property Institute.

ACCESS TOJUSTICE

The Columbus Bar Foundation, since its inception, has had access to justice as one of its key areas of focus. In the recent past, this has been done in part through almost $2 million in grants over the years to support the Legal Aid Society of Columbus. In difficult financial times when indigent clients are in greatest need of legal representation, funding for legal services are frequently reduced by government and private funding sources.

Three years ago, the Legal Aid Society of Columbus established the Voices for Justice Endowment Fund with the Columbus Bar Foundation to provide long term economic stability to the primary provider of legal services for indigent citizens in central Ohio. To date over $100,000 has been given and pledged to the Voices for Justice Endowment Fund. This fund is intended to supplement the generous annual giving of the central Ohio legal community.

Lawyers for Justice Fund supports the staffing of the Columbus Bar Association’s pro bono program including the traditional pro bono programs Lawyers for Justice and developing programs such as the citywide Brief Advice and Service Clinics and the weekly ABC6 TV Ask the Attorney.

Sometimes court is not the answer. Disputes between neighbors, between a landlord and a tenant can sometime be efficiently handled through mediation. The CBF and the CBA jointly created the Community Mediation Services in 1989 to cost-effectively handle some of these more minor disputes in a timely fashion. The CBF has been supporting this consumer-friendly service for 30 years. CMS provides important assistance in landlord-tenant disputes.

The Columbus Law Library has been a tremendous resource to pro se litigants for many years. The Columbus Law Library Association Fund was created to increase access to the justice system by providing support for assisted pro se especially in the areas of sealing criminal records and landlord-tenant disputes. It currently serves about 8,000 people per year. The Library Fund will also be used to support the Columbus Law Library which continues to be a resource to the public as well as the legal community.

The Scott E. Smith Fund has given a voice to the unheard children who are victims of

physical and sexual abuse through generous support of the Center

for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The annual Rock ‘n Bowl fundraiser also provides financial support for the Center.

Emerging needs are addressed by the Robert G. Palmer and Susan L. Simms Fund, the Marion Smithberger Fund and the newly created Jay Yano Memorial Fund. Likewise, the Columbus Bar Association Fund seeds programs which are of special interest to the central Ohio legal community such as the Columbus Bar inc (incubator) Program.

THE FUTURE

EDUCATIONMary Seaton Breese committed a $1 million deferred gift to the Foundation to endow the Josiah H. Blackmore II/ Shirley Marie Nault Chair in Legal Education at Capital University. The endowment will formalize a long-standing working relationship between Capital and the Columbus Bar which was initiated many years ago by President Blackmore and Ms. Nault.

The newly created Stephen and Lisa Eschleman Fund will provide ongoing financial support to the Law and Leadership Institute, a state-wide initiative in collaboration with the legal community that inspires and prepares students from underserved communities for post-secondary and professional success through a comprehensive four-year academic program in law, leadership, analytical thinking, problem solving, writing skills and professionalism.

Columbus Bar Association Alliance Fund supports the philanthropic works of the CBAA such as Open Books, Open Minds (see below), the Law and Leadership Institute, and Victims of Domestic Violence through the City Attorney’s office and the Ohio Wesleyan Junior League Middle School Mock Trial program..

Open Books Open Minds Fund supports the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility’s Media Center with books (now over 4,000 volumes), magazines and computer hardware and software. It also provides financial support for the Center’s GED program.

FELLOWSThe Columbus Bar Foundation is fortunate to have the broad-based support of the Columbus legal community through its nearly 800 Fellows. Every year the Foundation asks its membership to nominate other lawyers who are committed to the Foundation’s mission.

DIVERSITYMarsha Schermer had a vision of what the Columbus legal community could look like. It would be led by talented and committed lawyers without regard to sex, race, or social rank. The Marsha Schermer Fund made a grant of $3,500 to the OSU Moritz College of Law Public Interest Law Foundation to support a law student for a 10-week unpaid internship position working in public interest law. As part of her legacy the Marsha Schermer Memorial Fund has provided scholarships to women and minorities of character and promise at Capital University Law School and the OSU Moritz College of Law.

The Women Lawyers of Franklin County Fund and the John Mercer Langston Bar Association Fund also provide law school scholarships through the generosity of their members.
