(Letter written April ll1-, 1970)

A whole cow could be bought for less than a filet ·now, it was just that. I remember when we could go to the butcher shop and buy enough beef to feed a family of four for 35~. And if one bought a piece of meat, the buthher would give all the liver and soup bones they wanted. A soup bone would have more meat on it than one would get with a dozen soup bones now, and pay we pay such a pric1 for it too. Most farmers didn't but::her many beef animals then, and when they did, it would be a ;young animal, and the meat was divided with the neighbors. All had fresh meat. Folks didn't know about cold packing and canning meat then. My father sometimes bought beef from a farmer, made corned beef and dried beef of it. The best I ever ate,

Most farmers butchered enough hogs late in the fall for a )ear's supply of cured meat. Whe·n harvest and the fall farming was done there would be a slack time in the harness business and my father would have some weeks off and would go to my Uncle IDan Wood's farm to help with the butchering. When the hogs were dressed, cooled and cut up, father would cure the shoulders, hams and sides, make head cheese, and g.ceat pans of sausage, and render the lard. Aunt Alice would season and cook the sausage, then put a layer of patties in the bottom of a big stone jar, cover with melted lard, add a layer of patties, then lard, until the jars were full. Put a lid on, and then the jars were stored in the smoke house.

When the shoulders, hams and sides were smoked, Uncle Dan would put a layer of barley in the bottom of a long wooden bin in the smoke house, add a :f.uz layer of meat, then barley, until the meat was all packed • The·n they shut do~n the heavy, lid, thus the meat kept without getting strong. Of course, father got meat for his work.

HORSESs I always was fond of good horses and rode horseback a lot when I was a girl. •. on a side saddle, wearing a long riding skirt that came dm•m to my feet. Wouldn't people laugh to see that now?

I didn't know Thomas Ronan personally, but my father did because he made harness for him. I do remember him as a very colorful person driving his fine horses,

Another man, JOHN BRINING, loved fine horses. He could be seen on the streets alri10st every day driving his bee.utiful, bay trotter, hitched to a rubb, aer tired buggy (probably the first rubber-tired one in town). He was said to have driven from Dayton to Clarkston in 90 minutes, which seemed almost unbelievable, with roads as they were then.

I do not remember when Mr. Turpening taught school,- though I knew he had. He was blind when I first knev-1 him. His wife was still teaching, and I believe was once County School Superintendent. They lived one. small farm on the South Touchet. :·Jhen they would come to town, she would lead him into the harness shop, and leave him to visit with my father while she did the shopping. One day when he sat down in the chair which father had :p1laced for him, he said, "This chair is rickety, if you will give me some wire, I will fix it." ~-lire was used then to mend a lot of things. Father gave hin some wire, and he went to v..rorlc, and he did a beautiful job, better than most people who h2.d good eyes.

One Sunday afternoon, father and I drove out to their home to visit them, When we had been there a short time, r.-Ir. Turpening asked me to come sit by him so he could see what I looked like. I was so timid I probably would have refused b1.1t he was so nice and kind I went and sat by him on the sofa. After talking to me a_ few minutes, He reached over and with his finger gently felt over my face and hair. Then he took my hand and felt over it, each finger. After a I'ew

My grantfather, HARf:10N WOOD: and his brother WALTER served three years under General Grant in the civil war. Soon after their discharge, early in 1865, Uncle Walter as a Lieutenant and A, L. McCauley as Captain, were commissioned by the governme·nt to head the wagon train which arrived i·n Walla -Wallain Oct, 186.5, wintered in Waitsburg, and then homesteaded in Columbia County.

Three of my sons, HAROLD, EDWARD AND FR .. J.\.NK, served during World War II. Harold, after basic training, served 13 months in Alaska, then was sent to the .Aleutian Islands. vJe have heard a lot about the hardships the soldiers endured in the Civil war, but I wonder if it was much worse tha·n our boys endured i·n the Aleutians. The first 2 or 3 months they didn't even have tents to sleep in, had to sleep in sleeping bags in the slush and mud, with the awful wind blowing constantly. After 13 months, Harold was sent to the U. S, for more training, In a short time he becarae ill, spent 17 weeks in a hospital, was given a medical discharge and was sent home.

EDWARD, after graduating from the A.A.F. training commands aircraft radio mechanics school at Truax field, was sent to the ~hillipines where he served till the end of the war,

FRANK joined the National Guards in 1936 and in 19L:1 l enlisted for active duty. After serving at Ft. Lewis he was transferred to the 4th Amry at San Francisco, and from ther to the Officer's candidate school at Camp Lee, va. He was.commissioned a 2nd Lt, in July 1942. He participated in the invasion of North Africa and in five other allied campaigns, After 3 years in Europe, he was sent to U. s. Later, he served 3 years in Europe, was sent back to U.Ll. and later 16 months in Korea, 3 years in Alaska, and retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20 years service,

Ey youngest son, GLENN, not being old enough during World War II enlisted in the Army .Air Corps as soon as he was 18, After basic training, he spent 3 years in Japan, came home and got his discharge, but a year and half later he enlisted in the Hav-y Air Force. . • . spent 3 years on I.1idway Island, 8 months on the USS SALISBIBY, as chief aviation machinist mate. Spent 3 years at Moffet .field flying transport planes. After 20 years service, retir:ae 1968. Two sons-in-law, LE/.J MUTTBROCK and BE~T COL:E:I.ffi.N also served during World War II Lew worked in the ship yards in Portland, then entered the service and then served on Okinawa until the end of the war. Bert worked at :3oeings in Seattle, then joined the National Guards, served till the end of the war. I now have two grandsons-in-law serving, Rev, Don J.ich, se1--ved as Chaplain in Vietnari1 a year io now stationed at Fort Ord. Gary Overton served a year in Vietnam is now· in I:Iississippi.

HUNTLEY - Leaa A. Boggs Letter dated Jan. 31, 1970

Guyon Springer was the name of the boy. I looked it up on the Dayton record of schools for April 1898. I forgot to say that Miss Littleton lived on that side of the river, near where the accident-happened, so she sent the children home by way of town, across the bridge. It is needless to say, no flowers were picked.

I ahve a copy of the oldest record of the Dayton schools - 1880-1881. The directo~ of the school district were F. G. Frary, J. K. Rainwater, J. L. Smith afdhJohn Y. Ostrander. The teachers were s. G. Burdick, Principal of the RMMIIM §chool and academy, F. M. McCulley, Principal of the Public Schoo: Sina Coleson, grammar dept. Stelle. Bowen, intermediate dept. and Lizzie W. Geary, primary dept. While this was dated before I was born, I find the names of a lot of people who were there for a good many years, and descendents of some 'of them still live there.

I imagine you have a lot on Mr. Hendron. I would like to add that though he sometimes seemed gr~ff he was really a very kind man, deeply intErested in all of the students. Some years ago, when visiting in Dayton, my sister-in-law and I v,ent over to see 11:Ir. & Mrs. Hendron. He was delighted to see me, and brought out all of his old school pictures. We spent the whole eveningp)ring over them, each pointing out those we remembered and recognized.

~ remember too that the Hendrons belonged to the Christian church, and were very devoted to it. When their children were small there was a period of time when Mrs. Hendron was practically an invalid. When I would be passing the Christian church on my way to the Baptist church, I would see Mrx. Hendron drive up .and stop in front of the Crhistian Church, get out, lift Mrs. Hendron out of the buggy and carry her in his arms up the steps to the church.

I knew the Pings, the Hillers, Dr. MacLachlans and the Thompsons, though I don't think now of anything special except Ray Thompson's musical talent. He must have begun playing the p.ano about as soon as he could climb onto the piano bench. He learned to play other instruments too, and became a member of the Band when still quite young, and I believe Band Leader when he was still the youngest member of the band.

Ray's father, George Tho~pson, was a railroad man and they lived for many years in the brick house at 515 4th St. Mr. Thompson's brother, William, a scnool teacher, lived at the corner of Oak and 3rd. EllaGibson, ·whose mother had died, made her home with them for some time, and Ella and I baby-sat with George Thompson's little boys, Ray, Frank and :·Jillie. They were such wellbehaved little fellows it was a -pleasure to be w:tth them and sometines even .Ray would play the piano for us. -

a I know that you must have a lot about :'Jill Day's father, Dr. C. H. Day, but I feel that I owe my life to him, so would like to add a bit. He had been my doctor, the little I needed one, ·when I was with child. Then later when my 1st child was born, there being no hospital, I was at hone of I.Ir. & I•:Irs. },innFal 1. ;.Irs. !2.ll was a. dressmaker, but s01:19times acted as practical nurse. I became so ill they didn't think I could live, 2.nd IIrs. George :Oorr came in to help I"1rs. Fall. ~rhey told me later, tha.t for three days and nights Dr. Day scarecly left my bed side. l .. 11 ti1e sleep he got was sitting in a rocking chair by the bed. He cal led another doctor in consultation. :•ihen the other doctor saw me, he said, {!you can't save her, ·why waste your time?" Dr, --:Jay said, "Jhile there's life there's hope, I'r:1 not going to give up ••. if you don't want to help, Ill call someone else. 11 Eedical science has gone far, but to me none are as wonderful as Dr, Day was.

·~NTLEY, Lena A, Boggs 2. Jan. Jl, 1970

When my 2nd child was born, we had moved to a small f'arm five miles f'rom town on the South Touchet. I was to have gone to town again, but became ill at home. We had no phone, so sent a boy who worked for us af'ter the Doctor. When he arrived Dr. Day was just starting to take some f'riends for a drive in his first car, which he had purchased shortly before. When told that he was needed he left the car and c~me in his buggy wilth his span of beautiful bay horses, not trusting the car to get him there over rough country roads,

Another pioneer family was the A. A. Robisons. They lived next door to us when I was small, and their daughter, Nellie, was a baby. W. T. Stott later owned the house. I've heard my father say that Mr. Robison went broke and started over two or three times before he got a start raising hogs, and did so well that he was known around Dayton as "Hog Robison". I b:elieve he f'armed several different places before buying a farm near Walla Walla. He did so well there that when my father and I visited them in the early sum...7ner of 190 5, he owned three large ·farms.

I have clippings from the Walla Walla Union. One shows a picture of Nr. Robison•s son Lester and tells of ~is activities as a farmer, so it seems he has followed in his father's footsteps.

Another clipping shows a picture of the Orrin Danielson home i·n Dayton built in 1892, and speaking of the house at 515 L~th st. that was built in the 1870' s, both built of' Dexter briclc. I have been in both of these houses many times and ZI believe the one at 515 4th st. was built by rnr. Dexter, for they were the first people I knew to live in it, when I was very young.

A third clipping shows a picture of the Columbia School house near the Dumas orchard. I have gone there with a group of y,oung people to Literary programs. We would always be asked to cont:fibute something to the -program. Tu!y hobby was giving readings and could usually come up with something, others would sing or put on a skit.

I will mention one morefamily of Robisons. I believe he_ was connected in some way, or worked for the Ecklers Lumber Co. However, they had a daughter, Gertrude, who was a friend of Amy Eckler ••.• they both loved horses and each rode a beautiful horse. It was a common thing to see them racing up and dm,m the streets, standing up on the horses' backs, it was almost like a circul per-

Ny grandfather, HAR,0MON WOOD, and three of his brothers, Walter, David, a·nd Morgan, also tvv0 of my mother's brothers, Daniel and w·arren \tood, all homesteaded land in Washington. All except one settled in Columbia County.

Some of them came by wagon train in the fall of 1865, wintered in Waitsburg, then homeste~ded in 1866. My father, W. M. BOGGS, ·wife Na·ncy-, and two babies (Al:x 18 mos. and Alva 3 wee~s) when they left Illinois, came. to IDayton in the spring of 1882, by train, I was born on my grandfather's homestead in Smith Hollow, 10 miles from Dayton, in Feb. 1886, However, we never lived on a farm, as my father was a harness-maker, and we lived in Dayton. -He worked for Mr, Pierce, The shop was then on the south side of Main street, between 1st and 2nd, R. A, STANFORD ovmed a groilery store next door, and farther down the street was Chinatown. Some Chinese had a laundry there. I remember the shop, but not the year G. A, BARKER bought it, or that it was moved across the street to the co1~ner of 2nd and Main. KIT ROBINSON and his brother, JOE, also worked in the shop. Some y:ears later Kit opened a shop of his own farther down the street.

Hhen G. A. Parker retired, my father and brother, Alex, took over the business. Not too long after this, -cars began to appear, also tractors, so gradually the harness business began to suffer. KIT ROBINSON changed his business to making awni·ngs and other things. My father and brother moved to a small, nevi -town in Idaho, and opened a shop there. I went with them, but came back to Dayton in 1905, and was married there that fall, and lived there until 1912.

In the early days, there were 2 flour mills, one next to the bridge on !/Ia:zb.n street, and one between Jrd_ and L!,th sts, We lived on Oak St. and it was directly back of us, next to the Electric light plant. The mill burned dovrn ·when I was about 9 yrs. old,

1~Jhile it was all dry land farming then, each harvest there were tons of gra.i·n brought to the mills or shipped out, Hundreds of hogs and beef cattle ·were also shipped to market, as was wool. There was a woollen mill, but it burned dm'm and ·was not rebuilt.·

There were 2 planing mills, one across the bridge on Liain st. the other just past the sch·ool house on 3rd st. We often savr large loads of rough lumber on heavy wagons dravm by o:e-.en, go to the planing mills from the Eckler and group sa·w-mills in the mountains. Sometimes v:e saw strings of burros come into town. They ·were used as pack animals for prmvisions into the mountains and to the mines.

There v,asn' t mv.ch entertainmen.t then. YEt, I ~hin~c people were happier and nore friendly, always ready to help a neighbo:c in s1ckness or sorrow. ~!hen the band gave concerts on the Courtho.use lavrn on summer evenings, nearly everyone would be dovrn town.

Pox· years, the block on 2nd and i:ain, across from the harness shop, was vacant. It was low·and swampy, e.:nd full of frogs. One spring some joker put an item in the paper saying there would be a concert on th2.t corner on a certa.in evening. Not sayi·ng v:ha t kind of a concert. So eve:-cyone turned out, thinldng it v1ould be something different, and it v:as ••••• just J':'rogs, Quite 2. concert at that. Later the place was filled in and the Edwards Drv Goods store was built there.

In the fall, Indians would come to pick corn and fish in the TOUCHET, How excited ·we children wo.ld get when their f'olks took them to see the Indian camp and hear :their drums in the evenings. 0:f course, there v1as great excite=

- Lena (cont) 2. Letter Jan. 14, 1970 when a circus came to town, and funce in awhile there would be a stage show at the theater. No movies then. We had school progi,~ams, Sunday School programs, Picnics and camping trips,

· Memorial Day was a big day, There would always be l parage starging on Main St. The band marching, floats, soldiers, school children and others marching to the cemetery, where there would be services, People for miles around would come and stay for family dinners with relatives, ·

I remember 4· School Superintendents, i!ir. Payne, John Woods, L. B, Leatherman and your father. !'"knew your mother too, and what an active woman she was. (Loren Dumas:)

Among the good teachers we had, and I liked all of them, were Bertha Coleson, Alta Ault, Blanche Atwood, Ethel Lemley, Hae Littleton and Blanche Chamberlain. All local people, I believe. Blanche Chamberlain married Chas Sprague, a newspaper man, who served as Governor of Oregon since we have lived here.

There was also Miss Frazier, who married Homer Richardson, a pioneer, And, of course, there wes W. W. Hendro·n. I thought he was the best lbeacher I had, though sometimes He scared me half to death. Years later, ffi told this to his wife, and she said, "Well, now I've lived with him for 60 years and he hasn't scared me to death yet." He was not as fierce as a timid child thought. He could enj-oy a joke even if it was on himself,

a For =:.nstance, when my brother Alva was in his room, one class-mate, ~'Jal ter Smith, was prone to get into mischief, and Nr. Hendron would tell hin to come up front. Then, he would tell him to lean over his deslrand he would spank him with a ruler. One day lie called him up, and Walter leaned over the dealt without being told. Mr. Hendron looked at him for a minute, then said, '17:Jha t are ~ou doing that for, go back to your seat?" Everyone in the class laughed. That evening VIr. Hendron invited Walter to go home with him and spend the night, Halte went, and when Mr. Hendro·n was mi lki'ng the cow, he slipped up and frightened the cow, causing it to jump and spill milk on Mr, Hendron. The next day iln class, When Er. Hendron called on Walter to recite, he got up laughing, and said he couldn't unti he told what had happened last night, and he told it. J;Ir. Hendron laughed with the class, then went on to the lesson.

SorJetimes r,Ir. Hendron would tell us that "Haste makes waste", then he would run down the aisle to stoke the fire in the old wood heater.

Another incident of my school days happened when I was in the 4th grade with Miss Littleton. One afternoon in the spring she started to take the class to Rock Hill to gather wild flowers. We took a short cut and crossed the Touchet river on a wide plank, The water was high and swift, also deep, and some of the girls were afraid, so one of the boys would take her hand and walk behind her. I don't know how many times r.1iss Littleton crossed over and back, but when the children were all safely across, she started to cross again, and wl1en in the midst of the stream, she fainted and fell into the watter. Imnediately Will Day a.nd Gericon Springer plunged in after her. One caught her by her heavy hair, and together-they towed her to the bank. .t\s soon as she caught her b:s:ea th, she said ~twas fortunate her hair was not false, and that the boys could swim, because she couldn't. After that the boys were heroes.

I saw many changes in Dayton, and the Touchet Valley during my years there¢', and many more since I visited there. I was there when the Dumas orchard was planted. Also, when the Erbes orchard and others. A minister's wife once said it was the funniest town she ever lived ·in, that you ~ouch-it on one side, and Pat-it on the other.

Several families in Waitsburg were old friends of my father, and we sometimes visited there, There were the BREEZES, SANDERS, STONECIPHERS, and RAMSOURS whom I remember. I don't know whether any of' their descendents are there or not, I know one who lived there, Homer Reed, I carried him in my arms when he was a baby, His mother, Clara, and grandmother Livengood were very close friends of' my mother, who died when I was 7 years old. Clara was not married then, but she and her mother were wonderfully good to me, and after Clara married and moved to a ~arm, I sometimes spent two or three weeks with them durin~ the summer.

REMINI:BSENCE.

When the first snow comes drrifting down, Blanketing the earth, each shrub and tree,

In memory I travel a long way back, To my school days so happy and free,

How we rejoiced to see the snow, We didn't mind the cold at all

Soon in every yard would be seen A snowman both wide and tall,

Most everyone would have a sled And go coasting down a hill, .

Everyone would laugh and shout When someone took a spill,

I think the most fun of all Was the ridring in a dleigh

Horses prancing, sleigh bells ri·nging Laughter and singing all the way.

Oh yes, of course we went to school We would hate to miss a day.

Ajnd everyone would study hard So that at recess we could play.

The boys would build big snow forts, And how the snowballs did fly.

'l'he girls would play "Fox and Geese" As time passed swiftly by,

It's mighty fine to ride in cars Yet \'Then I hear o'er the radio,

11 Take note, there'll be no school today, Busses can't run through the snow."

I wonder if the kids of·today As they hurry to and fro,

Have half the fun that v,e had In those days of the long ago,·

P. S. The hill we coasted down is known now as Peabody Hill. It was known then as Strome Hill. l-1. family by the name of Strome owned the land, and were the only ones who lived on the hill. The road was quite steep, and was seldom used except by the S:tromes ..•. so it was ideal for coasting.

The children on the Brooklyn side of town coasted on Brooldyn Hill, known then as Reservoir Hill, as the reservoir furnished water for townl

' sent to you as well, with my deepest personal sympathy for your bereavement. The loss of a loved one is beyond man's repairing, and the medal is of slight value; not so, however, the message it .carries." .

Mrs. Boggs, who is living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Maynard, 313 First avenue, said she didn't trust the German government report and felt he was alive. Lt. Boggs attended Idaho Teachers' college.
