LE ALBERE - TRENTOLE ALBERE - TRENTO
D A L 1 9 0 5
L E C C O
The large 11-hectare area on the Adige River in Trento, originally the site of an important Michelin factory, has been the object of the most signifi cant urban requalifi cation project ever carried out in the region. Promoted by Castello SGR, the project has been named “le Albere”, taking inspiration from local historical references. In 1500 an allee of poplars, “albere” in Trentino dialect, formed the tree-lined entrance to the the Albere Palace, located here. The prestigious name linked with this ambitious project, which has contributed to revitalizing a signifi ant area of the city very close to the old town centre, bringing Trento back into touch with its river, is that of Renzo Piano. Colombo Costruzioni SpA, leader of the Trento Futura Scarl consortium, was assigned the role of General Contractor for the entire intervention. “Le Albere” does not want to be just a new neighbourhood, but rather the extension of the old town in a more modern design. The entire area has in fact has been conceived as a piece of the city, with its streets, squares, plazas, gardens, canals and all those buildings that will host commercial activity, offi ces, restaurants, shops and homes. The buildings, in perfect harmony with those of the old town, are four to fi ve stories high and divided into linear blocks and blocks with inner courts. Activities related to the tertiary and advanced services sectors (30,000 square meters) are located on the east; crowning the intervention, in the large 5-hectare public park are the residences and retail spaces. The innovative Museum of Science (MUSE) has been built on the north, next to the historical episcopal palace. The area has been endowed with a complex system of data networks that ensure effi cient telecommunications and the optimal functioning of domotic systems. A central trigeneration unit provides the energy necessary for life in the neighbourhood.

The “Le Albere” neighborhood is an innovative proposal also from the energy and environmental point of view. Optimising resources and containing operating costs by reducing the impact on the environment have in fact been the primary goals of the project. Hence the idea of a single trigeneration plant for the entire complex, located on the opposite side of the Adige River and capable of producing the electrical energy, heat, and cooling that is needed. In addition to this there is a geothermal pilot plant serving the large museum complex. This has allowed for the realization of the fi rst district cooling and heating systems in Trento in order to rationalize energy production and consumption.Particular attention to the details and typolgies of enclosure, along with an accurate choice of insulating materials and the installation of photovoltaic panels on all roof tops, has resulted in the realization of buildings certifi ed by CasaClima which are highly performing in terms of energy saving and control of thermal dispersion. Attention to environmental sustainability can also be seen in the selection of the fi nish materials: from the Alpine larch wood that characterizes the self-supporting facades of the buildings to the local stone used for cladding and pedestrian paths, to the extensive use of screens of climbing plants on the east facade of the buildings to be used for offi ces.
Eco-sustainability and energy effi ciency, certifi ed by CasaClima

near the town centre, which extends from
the Albere Palace to Via Monte Baldo
and from the railway line to the banks
of the Adige River, transforming it
into an example of urban quality,
characterised by a skillful combination of
natural elements in perfect balance with

MUSE aspires to be the most original science museum in Italy, thanks to a concept which places at the center man in his relationship to the environment, the earth and the universe. This is a strongly anthropocentric vision, represented in all the exhibition areas of the musuem, through the use of the most modern and interactive technologies, making Muse a museum for contemporary man looking to the future. The architectural structure echoes the concept of the museum. The building, whose skyline recalls the silhouette of the mountains, features a succession of spaces and volumes, posed on a large stretch of water, on which the museum seems to be fl oating. Stone cladding alternates with glass surfaces, whereas in the exhibition spaces bamboo is widely used for the fl oors. Local stone has been used also for the outdoor areas. The “entrance lobby” is a large square covered by glass and wooden structures, almost a natural prolongation of the main allee that links the neighbourhood with the green area opposite the Albere Palace. The exhibition spaces are distributed over several stories of the building, from the -1 level to the +4 level. Inside, the inclination of the pitched roofs, and a series of cuts in the fl oor plates generate areas with clear heights, which can be used for “outsized” exhibits.
MUSE: a science museum under the banner of modernity
