This month, we are celebrating our one hundredth issue. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our readers and colleagues in the Landscaping industry.

To celebrate our growing achievements, in this issue we take a look at Mena House and Old

Cataract - two of the most historically prominent hotels in Egypt and reveal its new renovations. See page 38. We also profile Desert Leisure Swimming Pools on page 26.

Every once in a while, a project comes along that is truly remarkable and on page 32 we uncover one such vision, with Luca Curci Architects latest proposal Vertical City. The building is designed on the sea bottom, with a series of underwater floors and includes facilities such as spas, mediation centres and gym and luxury hotels rooms with underwater views.

Speaking of cities, Lusail City is one of the most anticipated and most ambitious projects in Doha, Qatar by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company. Go to page 22 to see how they used Mashrabiya as a traditional design element.

Head to page 12, and see what the Promenade development on Al Marjan Island Corniche in Ras Al Khaimah has in store for the public.

Until next time,

The Beach attracts such a rich diversity of people of all ages and backgrounds; locals, expats, tourists as well as local and surrounding communities gather to enjoy it. The Beach project is a new benchmark in outdoor living, experience and entertainment in the Middle East.”

Cracknell, one of the Middle East’s finest landscape architecture practices is recognised with a Prestigious Arabian Property Award

Maarten Venter, Cracknell Design Director said, “The essence of outstanding landscape architecture and design is about how people respond to the spaces created. In developing the landscape strategy for JBR, The Beach, the team ensured full advantage was taken of its beachfront setting whilst mindful of the needs and interests of its varying target audiences. The result is that today,

In its quest to discover the best landscape architects in the Middle East, the International Property Awards in London invited landscape architectural practices to present their

finest work. The judging committee chaired by two active members of the House of Lords scrutinised hundreds of entries and Cracknell has been informed that it has won an Arabian Property Award for Commercial Landscape Architecture with its JBR, The Beach project in Dubai.

A host of Arabia’s finest landscape architects, developers, architects, interior designers and real estate agents will gather at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai on Thursday November 12th, 2015. There, in the presence of Lord Best, chairman of the judges for real estate categories, the results of the Arabian Property Awards will be announced.

Entries were received from companies in 12 countries across Arabia and winning entrants will be presented with either a ‘Highly Commended’ or ‘5-Star’ award. The top scoring 5-star winners will then go forward to represent Arabia in the 2015-2016 International Property Awards. They will compete against other regional winners from around the world to find the ultimate World’s Best Commercial Landscape Architect.

Stuart Shield, President of the International Property Awards, commented, “Once again, Arabian landscape architects have excelled in this competition by entering a select number of superb designs. These projects are meticulously planned to be functional and sustainable, creating the perfect environments in which to live, work or play.”

Its qualification as international fair –obtained since its debut in February 2015 -has been reconfirmed and certified also for the second edition: the new Myplant & Garden exhibition

proves itself to be the world reference point for business and the green sector, in which plant cultivations and constructions, flower cultivations and decorations, techniques and machineries, services and equipment find an international aim in their business and a real push to recognize the excellence

of the Italian flower and plant sector and of the green solutions which are here designed and presented.

The presence of buyer delegations, which has been remarkable since last year, will be further improved, thanks to the cooperation with bodies, institutions, agencies and companies.

“For the first time an Italian fair has connected the protagonists of architecture, constructions, flower and plant providers for projects and public and private, urban and extra urban green areas under construction”.

“We are talking about flower and vegetable gardens, parks and territories –and their maintenance – bearing in mind the needs of retailers and big wholesalers”.

“At any scale flowers and plants are a heritage which needs to protected: “We know the meaning of 2016 for the green sector: Italy will host IFLA World Congress, an extraordinary opportunity to talk about green, landscape and territory”.

There will be room for cut flowers and flower decorations: important schools and masters, from Italy and abroad, will discuss about creativity and beauty in flower compositions. There will also be room for taste, cooking shows with star-awarded chefs regarding vegetables and food and something is going to be organized also in

the city, in partnership with Aiapp green architects. The topics will focus on green and wellness, hospitality, nature and health, paving the way to new types of buyers who come from the hospitality world. Moreover, professionals will have the opportunity to update their knowledge about technical and professional themes.

In February 2016 FieraMilano will be once more a strong attraction for Italian and international professionals. Among the new concepts, it will be considered as a hub for green sector professionals in a

historically central, and not marginal, commercial area. The exhibition is transparently managed in cooperation with companies and is an example and boost for the whole sector, especially in Italy, in the Italian and world market.

“The international green exhibition is awaiting you with its second edition rich in new products, previews, business opportunities, contacts and relations”.

artificial grass

Schools and colleges weighing up a switch to artificial grass surfaces are left in no doubt after consulting with UK stadium manager Barry Walker. His

verdict – it’s a game-changer with all-year use and rocketing revenues…but prepare for the rush!

As the Bedworth United AFC honcho prepares for a second season playing on synthetic turf, he points to the swelling tide of students of all ages who now flock to use the club’s ground and are helping guarantee the club’s long-term gains from the investment.

And his chairman Neill Rayson-Randle

concurs; “This project is the best thing that has happened to date. The club’s future, which includes the whole community, will be more secure from now on.”

Bedworth AFC’s 3G synthetic pitch, completed by specialist sports contractor SIS Pitches, has proved a shining success, attracting more than 20 organisations to hire it for a range of sport and training activities. The club’s Oval ground, situated between Coventry and Nuneaton, is a facility that virtually never closes and executives believe it is a model that fits any country.

In just 12 months, the interest has forced Bedworth to reinvent its community

outreach to include not only football but also many other year-round activities. Local teams too, can play here now without fear that fixtures might be cancelled because bad weather had created unplayable conditions on the existing natural turf pitch.

The club now has a superb surface which is available for local teams, come rain or shine, Walker states. “Before the 3G pitch, they used parks or school pitches, not our old grass surface,” he recalls.

“Now, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, who granted us a 31-year lease on the ground, hires out the pitch for several different activities and local schools and are keen to come here.”

SIS PitchesSchools, community and youth “key beneficiaries” of Bedworth

United’s 3G legacy

Page 13: Landscape Magazine October 2015

11 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

The SIS pitches surface also allows a fair degree of flexibility. “Four junior matches can be played on the surface at any one time,” he explains. “We have eight small goals for mini soccer, two medium ones and the two full-size goals for our games. They all fit into the recesses built into the pitch perimeter.”

Football in particular has always proved a strong influence in the community, with currently more than 190 teams within Bedworth United’s catchment, including boys and girls school teams from under 6’s to local pub teams.

Two-thirds of the total £650,000 project cost was funded by the English Football Association and Football Foundation, with Neill Rayson-Randle making up the balance as a personal gift to the community, such is his commitment to the future here.

Run as non-profiting-making body, Bedworth channels any excess revenue it generates to further develop the facilities, for the benefit of football, other sports and fitness activities for all to enjoy. These are gains that are equally applicable to schools and universities.

UK-based SIS Pitches, from Maryport, was able to permanently cut in white lines for the full size pitch - with other coloured references for marking smaller pitches placed outside the playing area as guides. The company also provides, goals, floodlighting, nets and fencing where required.

With the club firing on all cylinders, it aims to further extend the usage its all-weather facility offers the community. “Our clubhouse is far busier than it was and we have staffed up to cater for the extra demand.

“The floodlights are in use far more now too, as so many more games are played

during the winter, and we have doubled the car park capacity to cope with the influx of visiting teams.”

Given its extensive use, perhaps there is no surprise to learn that the FA, who provided funding, insisted on conditions to replace the surface in 10 years time.

SIS Pitches also draws up usage codes and provides a maintenance service for its pitches, which are found in schools and universities across the UK, as well as the world’s leading sports clubs, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchesters United and City.

Quality in Consistency is Consistency in Quality

Achieving the best product for a contract nursery.I have a favorite statement which was taught to me by my engineering mentor.

“Quality in Consistency is Consistency in Quality”

At the time I was working in a metal workshop under training for my mechanical engineering trade for a medical company. We were producing preproduction tools and fixtures for silicon molds. Here when machining molds within microns, there was no room for error. Settings were agreed on, a procedure set and followed. This produced a flawless machined surface and always produced an excellent result.

This phrase can be applied to any industry and now as a Horticulturalist and Nurseryman, it is particularly applicable to the local landscape industry.

By Chel HauschildtNursery & Green Stock Manager at Nakheel Landscapes Doha, Qatar

Page 19: Landscape Magazine October 2015

17 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

Consistency is applied in all facets of production.

By using same size pots for all plants of a certain size can achieve consistent plant sizes. For example, cuttings should be produced in cell trays, prefilled by a machine, with a premix of cocopeat, compost and perlite or similar propagation specific media. When root emergence is recognized, each cell should then be transferred to the next

size of container. Dependent on it being a groundcover, grass, shrub or tree should determine the pot to be used.

Each stage of production is driven by the achievable size where to obtain a balanced root to foliage ratio. For example, a 20cm pot can accommodate a well-balanced shrub, no bigger than 50cm high by 30cm spread. Plants with higher foliage to root ratio cannot maintain enough moisture within its root ball.

Nursery practices in the Middle East are generally poor. Often when an inspection by the consultant or client takes place, the plants seem to be thriving. We have all seen glorious green bushy groups of plants in 7cm pots which are 1m tall! These are often produced under heavy shade and are allowed to set roots into the nursery floor. Upon removal to site, it can often be seen where roots have been heavily cut. The plants will wilt, yellow and die within two to three weeks, no matter how much water is applied.

Well-arranged and organized tree production at Nakheel Landscapes Nursery

Within the contract landscaping realm the design intent is often driven by avenues of trees of similar shapes, groupings of similar sizes and neat even spacing for plantings. Here within Qatar, the industry is heavily engaged in infrastructure works, where there are thousands of numbers of same species and avenues of plantings. To achieve this intent the plantable product must be consistent.

At any contractor’s nursery, it should be operating to target dates. This should allow time to determine shifting practices to achieve a planting or delivery date within budget. Being consistent in pot sizes and practices allows us to achieve a much more realistic timeline result.

Consistency in containers and media gives an even growth pattern for shrubs at Nakheel Landscapes Nursery

Page 20: Landscape Magazine October 2015

18 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

Managed spacing and consistent containers at Nakheel Landscapes Nursery

With trees, all containers for a certain size plant should be consistent. The use of planter bags for handling ease, consistent rootball size and better production results is one option which is cost effective.

I find the planter bags make it a lot easier to organize the nursery. Handling of these trees is much more manageable with machinery and labour. Within the nursery trees can be easily moved without risking to trunks or root systems.

HorticulturE

Page 21: Landscape Magazine October 2015

19 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

Planter bags in use at Nakheel Landscapes Nursery

At planting stage the trees can be lowered into planting pits without having to have their trunks damaged. Trees can be lifted vertically and lowered directly into a pit.

Utilizing standard containers within a nursery allows us, as nursery professionals, to engage a dialogue with the architects and consultants at design stage. Being able to tell the design team or their client, that a 5m x 4m tree will be supplied in a 1000 L bag sets a specification which is attainable by all contractors. At this stage it is also pertinent that the Client and Designer understand that during tender stage, it is possible that contractors will always offer different prices as they may not be pricing materials as to the project requirements. When producing consistent sizing of plant materials, this allows us to evaluate the true cost for a project without having to offer substituted sizes or specifications. There is no excuse from any nursery with correct operational practices, where plants can’t be supplied at project specifications.

Space for plant development at Nakheel Landscapes Nursery

Quality is easily gained with consistency.

When requested to produce a plant, for example Atriplex halimus at 60cm x 30cm in natural form, we start with cuttings in a pot tray within a controlled environment.

After root growth is attained, the shrubs should be shifted again, into a 20cm pot. The plants are graded at this stage so there are no shrubs of different sizes with in the one batch. The result is a batch of similar size and shape stock.

The result achieves a much more manageable landscape at implementation stage with less rejects and a much higher rate of growth success. There is no excuse to not be able to deliver plants consistent with the project specifications, if the materials are produced with an understanding of Quality in Consistency leads to Consistency in Quality.

Lusail City is one of the most anticipated and most ambitious projects in Doha, Qatar by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company. Lusail

City is the first mega-project in Qatar to stipulate a GSAS (Global Sustainability Assessment System) with a two-star entry level as a minimum requirement for any development within its vicinity as Lusail’s vision is to be the first green city in Qatar.

Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB), one of the leading local consultant has quite a number of projects in Lusail under its belt ranging from residential towers to office towers and mixed-used developments.

The current ongoing projects under AEB in various stages includes one of the most

significant and ambitious project called Plot-50, as this commercial tower with offices and retail space, is the first to be designed, constructed and completed in Lusail City with a five-star target rating under the GSAS rating. It is located in the city’s Marina District.

Looking at Lusail City’s master planning concept and vision of being characterised by rich history that captures authentic heritage and values of Qatari culture, the architectural concept was designed around the understanding of the local culture and translating it into the building design. One of the most prominent aspects of Qatari culture is the use of patterns and the Mashrabiya as a traditional design element. This was shown on the building façade as a strong dynamic feature. The lower portion which houses the retail is clad in

stone depicting the earth whereas the top portion of the building housing the office soars higher up and dons the Mashrabiya pattern. The Landscape design was inspired by the strong architectural concept of Qatari Mashrabiya patterns which flows onto the external driveway and main entrance flooring design.

The external spaces with Mashrabiya design floor pattern is interlaced between the natural stone granite finish and artificial lawn pockets to soften the hard surface areas. Due to the target five star

GSAS stringent requirements, no lawns were proposed and it was substituted with artificial grass instead. All of the rows of palms; Phoenix dactylifera that was initially proposed for the main entrances were replaced with sculptural Bucida buceras trees instead, due to the much lower water consumption compared to palms. A soft green Jasmine hedge mark the boundary separating the public realm and the project's outdoor spaces. Colourful decorative pots with Bougainvillea bonsai creates

Page 26: Landscape Magazine October 2015

24 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

an interesting feature to the space in-between the green artificial lawn. The idea for this space serves as a meeting place or a gathering area.

The signature golden box that runs from the tower on the façade gliding down into the lower portion of the stone clad on the building facade, was imitated into the landscape area as an entrance statement arch on the project side. This compliments the whole design as one strong scheme.

All of the exhaust openings follow the same design language of Mashrabiya patterns. The whole landscape concept compliments and acts as a symbiosis on a number of levels – visually, architecturally and functionally supporting the architectural design scheme. Each element on the external spaces ties back to the architectural concept.

All of the finishing materials are of light colour blending with porcelain tiles Flaviker Quartzite series and natural stone granite and porphyry in red grey blends. The planting scheme is a mixture of low water consumption to hardy ornamental trees to respect the GSAS rating requirements. Green carpets were achieved with a mix of artificial lawn and ground covers.

All of the planting materials were of low water consumption to score a full marks on the Vegetation category for GSAS on this level. A more informal break out space for the office workers to gather or just relax was provided with seating in between stone clad upstand planters with aromatic shrubberies. The same flooring pattern is repeated.

Malay ShahGeneral Manager, Desert Leisure.

Can you please give us a brief description about you & your educational background?I moved to Dubai in 1972 along with my Parents and 3 brothers. Completed schooling in the Indian High School in 1979 and subsequently graduated as a Civil Engineer (B. Tech) in 1984.

Can you please highlight your past experience in the GCC region in the past years?I started my career at the age of 15 years as a full time typist in the Accounts Department of DNATA, followed by a short spell in

the Accounts Department of Gulf Catering Services at age of 17.

Started my career as a Civil Engineer with a 3 year foundation building experience in a Building Contracting & Trading Company and then moved on to specialise in the design, construction & maintenance of Swimming Pools, Water Features, Soft and Hard landscaping works.

I have now been in this industry since 1988 and have been involved in the Design and construction of Swimming Pools and Water

Features at Wonderland Aquapark, Emirates Towers, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Royal Mirage, Royal Meridien and various other prestigious projects.

When did your company first set up business in the Region? The flagship of the Group ‘Desert Landscape Company’ was established in 1988. They specialized in the Design & Construction of Hard and Soft Landscaping, Swimming Pools and Water Features. As the market evolved, the Swimming Pools and Water

Page 29: Landscape Magazine October 2015

27 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

Features side of the business was spun off as a separate company and ‘Desert Leisure Swimming Pools’ was established in 2002.

What are your company’s Main Activities & Services? The Company’s main focus is towards ‘Water’ related services and activities. Currently the main focus is around Design, Construction, maintenance and supply of Swimming Pools & Water Features related products, the company is also specializing further in various other water related

activities i.e. water conservation, leak detection and repairs and water treatment. With a wealth of experience in the team the Company also undertakes hard and soft landscaping, timber & concrete restoration works

What are some of the major projects that you have been involved within the past years?Sofitel Hotel, Palm Island, St Regis Hotel, Abu Dhabi, One and Only, Palm Island, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, Jumeirah Beach

Hotel, Dubai, various Palaces and High End Residences.

How does the company offer such a wide range of services so successfully? We have an experienced and dedicated team and the latest industry related know how and equipment. The Big Five of the team have collectively clocked over a 100 years of experience in the swimming pools & Water feature related field. Our in house training capabilities are headed by UK qualified Trainer and we have an

Page 30: Landscape Magazine October 2015

28 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

excellent relationship with International industry related suppliers. We also operate a professional setup – including a call centre with bespoke software complete with complaint log-in & follow up systems.

What are some of the most important things one should consider when deciding to add a swimming pool to their property?Think about why am I adding a pool – for exercising, for general recreational purposes or pure for aesthetic reasons ? Consider its depth, water temperature and how it will be controlled and whether you have adequate electrical load to support the equipment. Any special features in the pool such as waterfalls, counter current swim jets, spa jets, colour change lighting etc. Also consider budget and future maintenance costs.

How long does it take to build a typical swimming pool? This would depend on the size and type of the pool. A typical Residential Pool (approx. 8m x 4m) would normally be constructed in about six to eight weeks however if required the period can even be reduced to between four and six weeks.

What are the main installation challenges? And how to prevent water leakage?Whilst there are no specific ‘installation challenges’, one could encounter tricky situations such as bad soil conditions, dewatering issues, excavating through hard strata, access challenges etc. These would normally be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Some of the key areas in pool construction I would normally stress on are ensure all construction joints are water tight and that there are no ‘porous’ concrete areas around pool fittings and penetrations. Ensure all pipe penetrations are adequately treated, pool water circulation system is well designed.

Pool leakages commonly occur due to faulty pool shell construction and / or poor pipe installations. It is very important that necessary tests are carried out at various stages of construction and eventually during the commissioning stage to ensure that there are no leakages from the pool.

Is it difficult to maintain swimming pools? Although pool maintenance is not difficult, it is very important that the technicians maintaining the pool are well trained. Maintenance is not just limited to keeping the pool clean but also ensuring that it is

leading to cloudiness and unhygienic water condition. No one would like to swim in a pool where the water does not look crystal clear.

How do you see the future opportunities related to the landscape, irrigation and swimming pool business in the coming years? Whilst the industry is already very competitive there will always be lucrative assignments for experienced and reputed builders. A substantial portion of our business comes from ‘problem solving’ in existing pools and gardens that are poorly constructed.

Can you tell us about your Group’s plans for the future ?We have Michael Mascarenhas as our Group CEO challenging the norm and bringing a sense of direction and vision. He has been catalytic in changing how we think as a Group and creating new energy and growth strategies. Under him not only have we witnessed sustainable growth within each of the group’s verticals but we have added on new business opportunities. Our footprint is now regional and with our plans, intend to create excitement in an industry most consider not so exciting.

hygienic and well disinfected, water losses due to general day to day upkeep are kept to a minimum and leakages (if any) are detected early to avoid not only hefty water bills but also possible serious soil erosion and subsequent damages to the surrounding areas and structures.

Further, qualified and experienced maintenance technicians will ensure the longevity of the pool equipment and maintenance kit, damages if any can be detected early and repaired to avoid serious damages.

What can happen if the water fails to circulate in the system properly?Inadequate circulation of water in the pool can cause ‘dead areas’ in the pool eventually

The project combines sustainability with population density and it aims to build up a zero energy city-building. Starting from the

analyses of the contemporary skyscraper, conceived as a compact element, smooth and alienated from the surrounding space, the project has re-interpreted it in an opened structure, equipped with green areas on each level, natural light and ventilation. This new interpretation allows its residents to get into a healthier lifestyle, in connection with natural elements, re-thinking the traditional concept of community and society.

The building’s structure is based on a modular structural prefabricated element, which is repeatable horizontally as well as vertically. The singular shape of the structural element creates a 3-D network which sustains every single floor. The structure is surrounded by a membrane of photovoltaic glasses which provide electricity to the whole building and make it energy-independent, providing further energy for the buildings on the mainland too.

The city-building is completely perforated to permit the circulation of air and light on each level, hosting green-areas and vertical gardens. Green zones are spread all over the tower, while meeting and social areas are thought for the community life.

The city-building consists of 10 modular layers overlapping. It reaches the height of 750 metres, 180 floors, with a total volume of 3.750.000 cubic metres, able to host up to 25.000 people, with a green area of over 200.000 square metres, including the public garden square at

the top of the building. Every modular and repeatable layer is high 72 metres and has an overall diameter of 155 metres of which 120 metres of empty space inside the building. It consists of 18 floors, 58.000 square metres of floor surface housing homes and services,

offices, stores and other facilities for a large community of maximum of 2,500 inhabitants. Residences have different sizes and shapes for each floor, and they include apartments, duplex and villas. The outside surface, with green areas and gardens, is large 20,000 square metres.

The building is settled on the sea bottom, with a series of underwater floors that

host parking and technical areas, facilities such as spas, mediation centres and gym and luxury hotels rooms with underwater views.

It is possible to reach Vertical City by water, by land or by air. The circular basement is equipped with external and internal docks and three naval entries: large boats can dock at the external berths, so as permitting public or private smaller boats only, to navigate in the inner gulf. The connection with the mainland is made possible throughout a semi-submersed bridge for pedestrians, cars and public electric transports, which connect the land with the

ena House and Old Cataract are two of the most historically prominent hotels in Egypt. Both are not only known for their interior magnificence and tranquil views but also for their unique landscapes. It was Sites

International's honor to have completed the landscape architecture renovation for both hotels.

The Mena House hotel offers a panoramic view of the great pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and was originally built as a royal lodge for Khedive Ismail. The lodge was then expanded during the grand opening of the Suez Canal to receive many important guests including

works of art

During the Renovation of Mena House, Sites International paid heed to the great view of the pyramids maximising that fact to the hotels advantage. A new reflective pool was designed and built directly parallel to the pyramids offering a continuous view of lush greenery, water and the pyramids. Many palms obscuring the vision to the pyramids were removed and relocated on the site. A new swimming pool was built to offer a pleasant view for inner hotel rooms. The entrance was moved from the main road were a grand entrance, more fitting to the hotels historic magnificence, was created using palms, shrubs and water features in the form or fountains and running streams. Parking space was created for both cars and buses. To further add to the historical context a herb garden was created, not just for aromatic purposes, the garden also contains old herbs commonly used for medical purposes.

the Empress Eugenie. Two wealthy English couples acquired ownership of the hotel consecutively. The first used it as a private residence and gave it the name Mena House after the first king referenced in the ancient Tablet of Abydos. The second couple were responsible for turning the estate into a luxurious hotel.

The Old Cataract Hotel marks the end point of the fertile rich Nile Valley and the start of the Nubian Desert. It is built in

the city of Aswan, which holds a large percentage of the world’s artifacts. The hotel overlooks the island of Elephantine that was once home to the once vibrant

Khnum Cult. This serene location is a muse to many, inspiring writers, like Agatha Christie, and perfumers like Jean Claude Ellena. Old Cataract received many notable visitors ranging from King Farouk of Egypt, to Winston Churchill, Tsar Nicholas of Russia, Duke of Connaught and Aga Khan.

During the Renovation of Old Cataract Hotel, Sites International worked on enhancing its historical features. The existing swimming pool was demolished and a new pool was commissioned to follow the famous bend of the Nile River. The swimming pool is parallel to the Nile River acting as a visual extension of the Nile. Its design is spectacularly unique as the jacuzzi end of the pool is naturally situated between two large granite rocks that were originally present. Since the pool has a runoff effect, swimmers will directly see the Nile River next to them creating the feeling of swimming in the Nile River. The entrance was kept in its original place, however its design was completely altered to fit the culturally historic context of Aswan. The entrance

was situated with pillars that mimicked the theme of old temple entrances in Aswan. More than 80 percent of the trees removed were relocated on the site and the other 20 percent are all local plants. To induce the feeling for all visitors a new lake was created at the back of the hotel to offer visitors in the inner rooms a scenic view.

Both hotels, each with its own feature, Mena House: The Pyramids and Old Cataract: The Nile Valley Tip, are keystones of Egyptian tourism. During the design and implementation phases Sites International worked hard to enhance the prominent features in each hotel, preserve the contextual heritages of each location and be sustainable by reusing plants already on the site. Mena House and Old Cataract Hotels now enjoy new landscape designs that help enhance and merge their key features.

To Infinity and beyond What inspired you to become architects?

Most children stop drawing when they reach a certain age, but we both kept on going and developed an interest in spatial composition which eventually led to architecture. Although ending up in the same place, our initial inspiration was very different. Niels was drawn to the fine arts and I found my inspiration in the urban art scene. As a teenager Niels did paintings inspired by Danish artist Per Kirkeby and I did graffiti inspired by the great pioneers from New York. In that way we complement each other very well.

The Infinite Bridge has a very clear shape: a circle. This basic geometry transforms it into something really magical and extraordinary. Where does the inspiration for your design come from? We wanted to create a structure that could stage the panorama of the Aarhus Bay. As the horizon the circle has no beginning or end

and therefore seemed like a perfect geometry for framing this panorama. The simple iconic shape of the circle is actually meant to take focus away from the object itself and let people experience the landscape while moving in a clearly defined space. You could say that the simplicity of the structure allows people to see the complexity of the surroundings.

Page 50: Landscape Magazine October 2015

48 I www.landscape-me.com I October 2015

Why did you choose the title: The Infinite Bridge instead of The Infinite Pier?A bridge is a connecting structure whereas a pier or a jetty is an open-ended structure. In that regard we find that the word bridge best describes the intention behind the project, which is to create a structure that connects the different elements of the landscape into one panoramic experience for the person engaging with the structure.

Can you describe the experience a visitor will have when walking on the bridge? When walking on the bridge you experience the landscape of the Aarhus Bay slowly

Page 51: Landscape Magazine October 2015

unfolding before your eyes as one cohesive panoramic composition, as your perspective slowly shifts while you’re moving across the bridge. You hear the sounds from the forest and the water below your feet. You feel the temperature

of the air and the wind against your skin and you see the sunlight playing in the sea. But most important of all you see the other people walking on the bridge, sharing the same experience, which creates a feeling of togetherness.

What are the characteristics that make a public space more than interesting?People like looking at other people and being in the same space without imposing on each other. Therefore creating a good public space is all about generosity and making the individual feel welcome in the common domain.

Do you believe that architecture has to be more playful in order to be more appreciated?Sometimes you need playfulness and sometimes you need simplicity in architecture to enable the complexity of everyday life to unfold. It all depends on

the situation. Playfulness is important in architecture but not necessarily as a complex manifestation of the build environment surrounding us. Many times the simplest of structures spark the most playful behavior as they allow the imagination and creativity to unfold.

Which is the common ground between art and architecture?Art is about telling a story whereas architecture is about creating a framework where stories can be told and life can unfold. In that way art and architecture complement and embrace each other.
