TAMASSoCiATi RECEivES THE ZUMToBEL GRoUP AWARD 2014 The Paediatric Centre in Sudan designed by Tamassociati received the Zumtobel Group Award 2014 for the buildings category

According to the jury, the Paediatric Centre, in Port Sudan, designed by the Italian team and already referred to

as the world’s most sustainable hospital, is an “exceptional” work, which “combines the highest aesthetic standards with the adoption of innovative and more efficient solutions for resource exploitation, greater environmental care, and the establishment of better life conditions.”

Moreover, the jury acknowledged in particular the pursuit and implementation of the latest technology, especially in these extreme climatic and social conditions.

The hospital, built on a commission of the

NGO Emergency, is the result of skilful ‘Italian style’ combining technological and aesthetic solutions, optimized local resources, project flexibility and downsizing according to the available resources, study, care, and involvement of local labour: the building represents an ethical and social vision of ‘architectural design’, and ensures a high added value based on sustainability in the broadest and deepest sense of the term

For Tamassociati it is the fourth global acknowledgement in the last few months for Tamassociati. After receiving, in chronological order, the much coveted Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the IUS-Capocchin Award, and the Curry Stone Design Prize for qualitative excellence and

for the eco-social impact of its international works, Tamassociati obtains another world-class acknowledgement.

The construction of one of the few health facilities in this broad region, capable to provide free health care to local children, is a step towards full enjoyment of the right to health, beauty, and respect for the environment.

A Social Design combining cost containment with excellence - low cost/high quality:

“coexistence between the best possible healthcare and the best environmental approach is a major future challenge, not just for Africa.”

The much-coveted international acknowledgement goes to projects with the highest innovative value.

“a peopLe’s paLace. the Library oF birmingham and other buiLdings For the pubLic”

A People’s Palace will open at the Aedes Architecture Forum, Berlin. “A People’s Palace” exhibits models

and movies of recent public buildings by Mecanoo, including the Library of Birmingham. Aedes Architecture Forum, founded by Kristin Feireiss, is one of the most prominent international platforms for architecture and urban design.

Besides the Library of Birmingham, the municipal offices and train station in Delft, the Kaap Skill museum on Texel, the Wei-Wu-Ying Center for the Performing Arts in Kaohsiung, and the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in Boston are among the projects which will be on display. Mecanoo’s founder and creative director, Francine Houben, believes that public buildings are the social and cultural heart of society:

“Public buildings need public space and should be welcoming to everybody.”

The Library of Birmingham is the largest library in Europe, located at the city’s main Centenary Square. Mecanoo has designed a building that is inviting and inspiring for people of all ages and backgrounds - a real public building that also creates an outdoor public space. The circular amphitheatre embedded in the square reveals a glimpse of the inner library world to the public and sets the tone as a performance space. Standing high above the square, the rooftop gardens provide commanding views across the city. In the first year since its opening in September 2013 over 2.7 million have visited the Library of Birmingham. Today it is the place to be for community events, studying, working and meeting people.

Mecanoo, founded in Delft in 1984, is

made up of a highly multidisciplinary staff of over 120 creative professionals from 25 nationalities and includes architects, interior designers, urban planners, landscape architects and architectural technicians. Over the past 30 years, Mecanoo’s multidisciplinary approach has resulted in a wide-ranging portfolio of designs that are executed with technical expertise and great attention to detail.

Francine Houben sees the office as a symphony orchestra, bringing together urbanism, landscape, architecture, restoration and interior design in a coherent way. The office has won numerous international awards. The Library of Birmingham has been nominated for the prestigious 2014 Stirling Prize. The Architects’ Journal named Francine Houben Woman Architect of the Year 2014.

Exhibition areas The central focus of the exhibition will be indoor and outdoor plants and cut flowers. In addition to them, to complete the offer, there will be a section for gardening techniques (with composts, vases, seeds, greenhouses etc.), company services (hardware, software, managing tools etc.) and an exhibition of equipment and machines for gardening and garden maintenance.

There will be also an important area dedicated to the small and big garden works.

Moreover, the event management office –which has been working in the Italian trade fair sector for more than 20 years – will create setups and scenic designs to recall the beneficial effects of living outdoors, in the open air –also from an aesthetic point of view-, which will become the trend setter concepts for green-décor and the interior landscaping. Since it is a BtoB event, the staff will also organize some technical and professional meetings, conferences and seminars.

Since its first edition it has been an exhibition project with a wide geographic and time prospect. The organizers, who conceived the event together with the members of the consortium, have already met and are currently meeting local and national associations in the sector, consortiums, single companies and partner companies all around Italy. “The feedback is really positive”, they say, “Our feeling is that the event is getting bigger”. In a short time the trade fair project has become a real trade fair, joined by new companies every day.

Between the promoting consortium and the event management office there is a very strong connection: like actors of the same event, like people who are sharing different visions and ways of working, like professionals who want to give an important contribution to a sector, which is so important for Italy. Generally speaking, the trade fair is a tool to give new energy to this sector and make it grow.

Contemporary monumental works hanging amid shapes, visions, and concepts for the challenging installation created by Metrogramma

for Margraf

The presence of this historical Vicenza-based company at this leading showcase for the industry celebrates the beauty of marble, as well as the technological excellence acquired in 108 years of unconditioned research and innovation work. This also provides the opportunity to unveil possible scenarios of coexistence where local landscapes and the unrelenting attempt to retrieve their spacial dimensions go hand in hand with overwhelmingly, mechanical urban skylines permanently dotted with gray clouds and concrete.

These scenarios represent the typical duality of this company that loves to match the wild natural streaks and textures of its raw materials with sumptuous and opulent decors and finishings. Metrogramma has fully interpreted and even captured this concept, which is embodied by two extraordinary installations inside and outside the stand respectively, representing this farsighted company based in Chiampo.

Hanging Gardens consists of two modular latticed structures of reinforcing bars, arranged in a shaky balance which almost seems to be

yearning to be filled with concrete. Instead there are marble slabs hanging randomly and green plants protrude from of the pores and voids of a grid-like structure.

The two modules that surround Margraf’s area provide an attractive enclosure of the stand interiors, yet without any solid closure. They are complemented by long standing elements on a slim pedestal supporting an asymmetrical cantilever mimicking cranes: a design reproducing the continuous process

of becoming that goes beyond the clearing of the construction yard and continues with the life that animates man-made environments. Climbing plants alternate with marble slabs hanging lightly from the metal cages forming a symbiotic and peaceful coexistence.

Outside, the installation features more steadfast and permanent proportions recalling the trees and elevated squares embellished by luscious marble and steel braziers, as well as nature-born sounds.

Both constructions are clearly inspired by Yona Friedman’s “feasible utopias” both in terms of the material manifestation and the visionary goal of a peaceful coexistence of man-made artefacts and nature within contemporary urban settings.

Marble is a monumental, rugged material that has been traditionally

associated with ancient Italian master sculptors. Its combination with the underlying, lightweight sub-structure, designed to bear the slabs, results in a semantic arrangement forming Hanging Gardens that are a new type of counterpoint focusing on monumental endurance rather than the immediate, transitory appearance of the scenographic installation.www.margraf.it www.facebook.com/margraf.industriamarmivicentini

ecology

Our region is living a fascinating upswing reflecting on everything in many ways; one of them is called “the invasion of the

concrete.” Not only because we have been wrapped up by plenty of gloomy coldish structures but also because we care about the veracity of our planet and the health of future generations because we want to construct massive ‘healthy’ cities. We need: Green Roofs.

Our mission as Al Yousuf LLC and our Partner ZinCo GmbH is to arouse the consciousness of our society about Green Roofs as a necessity for ‘Healthy Cities.’ Green Roofs offer more than aesthetic privileges; they present a bundle of economic, ecologic and social benefits for the communities.

Economic benefits of Green RoofsThe initial installation cost of a Green Roof is more than a conventional roof; however, the life cycle cost is more than competitive. It helps to reduce renovation

Do we need GreenRoofs?

and maintenance costs as Green Roofs protect the waterproofing from extreme heat and temperature fluctuations, Ultraviolet radiations and mechanical damages which will result in prolonging the lifespan of the waterproofing membranes twice as traditional roofing.

Green Roofs decrease the amount of energy required to moderate the temperature of the building (mainly air conditioning consumption) which

will result on improving its energy performance and will lessen the emissions of Greenhouse gases (GHG).

A Green Roof acts as a natural filter of the rainwater, it also stores water whether in the substrate or in the drainage / storage elements and plays a role in reducing the precipitation run-off resulting in decreased stress on the sewer system, preventing combined sewer overflow.

All types of roofs can be greened“Green roofs give character to cities”

Compared to conventional roofs, Green Roofs have much lower burning heat load wherefore it is considered a natural fire defense of the building. Aside from the individual economic benefits of the Green Roofs, they also contribute in reinforcing the market by creating new relevant employment opportunities such as manufacturing and supplying of pertinent materials like waterproofing ,anti- roots membranes ,drainage and storage elements ,

separation and protection sheets, plants, substrate, design and installation.

Ecological Benefits of Green Roofs

It improves the micro climate by cooling the air through evapotranspiration. Green Roofs contribute to improve the microclimate especially in densely populated areas, they also filter out the air by binding noxious substances, dust and smog. Large areas of land are conquered every year by urbanisation, Green Roofs recompense lost lands in a way rooftops can be developed into social and recreational spaces; it can be used for urban agriculture also. Green Roofs also offer a natural habitat for some insects, birds and butterflies.

Green Roofs increase the opportunities to recycle materials such as aggregate and compost. Cooling the atmosphere during

hot seasons will result in moderating the Urban Heat Island and the emission of Greenhouse gases will be dramatically reduced. Green Roofs act as an acoustic insulator as it can reduce the sound reflection by eight DB which is beneficial to people who live next to loud places such as airports and factories.

Social benefits of Green RoofsGreen Roofs provide beautiful aesthetic views for surrounding buildings and recreational spaces for meetings and gatherings; they contribute to improve public relations. They also reflect positively on the community health as they reduce the impact of the Electro-Magnetic radiation from wireless devices

and mobile networks, the reduced pollution as a result of greenery can decrease the demand on health care.

They can be utilised for education to increase students’ awareness about the environment and ecology. Roofs are more than protection of the building; they give character to individual buildings and entire cities.

We approached the development of the art work package in a very different manner.

We imagined if Isamu Naguchi had actually lived in Bali in the 1950’s and ’60s - when he was at the pinnacle of his career - and how living there would have influenced his work.

Isamu Naguchi is my favourite sculpture of all time. He was Japanese American and his talents spanned from landscape architecture, to furniture and lamp designer, to one of the greatest fine artists the world has ever known.

I started this venture called Bensley Design Studios with an atelier in Bangkok in 1989 and another, shortly after in Bali in 1991. Over 25 years later, we have over 150 designers, artists, landscape architects and interior designers. My prime interests are to design the architecture, interiors, gardens, uniforms and tabletops for small luxury hotels, as I love to make unique statements in the word of hospitality. My multi-talented staffs have been with me for over 15 years and some 25 years.I also believe in good honest hard work to create unique one-of-a-kind environments for our clients. When designing hotels, it is important to me to have a deep understanding of the environment in which we are building and to reflect this in our design work. The best resorts are built lightly on the landscape and have a minimal impact of Mother Nature.

the primitive sculptural forms that I found on Easter Island that inspired this favourite part of the gardens. As there is so much happening visually from the lobby to the beach, I thought it best to have a simple primitive solution that easily draws ones eye to the ocean. The raw beauty of the added fire at night is my signature that I started some 30 years ago.

The rain forest gate at the entrance is simply a garden folly, that has no real use but sets the tone for the unique experience the guest is about to enjoy. We wanted to play with scale, mist, blue light and the idea of a “jungle in a box”.

The floral patterning that occurs throughout the hotel was designed with the mindset, “What would Naguchi have done?” and has become the DNA of the St Regis Bali, as interpreted in the patterning in wood, bronze, stone, pebbles and ceramic. I love to create one direction for our team of designers and then keep to that DNA through thick and thin. It is a great way to end up with a coherent project, even if it is only subliminally.

I was fortunate to have great mentors during my early days and also to be a full-time Site

Architect for the Australian National Gallery when I was only 23 for two

years. This experience gave me tremendous site knowledge and an understanding of the highest level of landscape design and construction.

The Gallery Sculpture gardens and landscape is now designated as a “National Treasure.” This experience gave me an edge, I believe over many of my colleagues at that time. My career has been very interesting and I have been a full-time and part-time lecturer in Environmental Design, a member of the top design companies in Australia (Forsite, EDAW), a Director of Travis Partners Pty Ltd in Sydney (now Architectus) and AECOM (Indonesia).

I was also able to establish my own Architectural, Landscape Architecture, Golf Course Architecture and Quantity Surveying company in South East Asia, China and the Middle East in 1989. At that time I also used my Landscape Architecture skills to become a recognised Golf Course Architect. I formed a Golf Course Construction Company and built many of our designs throughout China and S.E. Asia.

I am a great believer that Landscape Architects have the skills to lead Multi-disciplinary companies and that our training gives us the right balance of vision with practicality. In late 2004, I moved to

Dubai to study the market and expand my company PDSI. During this time my China office worked with me producing projects as a developer/consultant of value over six billionUSD in Ras al Khaimah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I also used Dubai as a base to undertake large consultancy projects in Jordan, Egypt, Oman, Romania, Italy, Spain, Sierra Leone, Montenegro, Afghanistan, the Caribbean and South East Asia.

In addition, I was Jose Maria Olazabal’s Resort and Golf Course Concept Architect during this period as well as the Concept Architect for PDSI. During that time I was researching and applying the techniques of desert Landscape design and implementation and developed programs combining Carbon Sequestration with Sea Water Agronomy which I have presented at numerous conferences.

My passion is exploring the use of pure seawater to produce food and also the equitable redevelopment of slums. I formed a company called Whole Earth Communities for both research and activity in both those areas in 2012.

I have also given papers on terrorism security and safety for landscape developments as well as designing for the disabled. Unfortunately my companies were amongst the wreckage of the Global Financial Crisis and I returned to Australia with my family in early 2009. I worked with numerous companies as a consultant during this period in Australia and China and held the position as a Director of AECOM for Indonesia.

Page 31: Landscape Magazine November 2014

29 i www.landscape-me.com i November 2014

I was offered the position of Head of Landscape Architecture for Khatib & Alami who have offices in the UAE as well as many other parts of the world and that is my position now.

What are the main challenges of doing business in the current GCC market post-recession?I think it is easier to do professional business in the market now because most of the brokers have disappeared. The booming GCC was full of bluff, wild schemes and poor

enforceability of contracts and, whilst it was exciting, it was very risky and dangerous. Clear Public realm guidelines and authority regulations have helped a great deal.

What is the difference between landscape industries here in the Middle east compared to other countries? To design and build landscapes in the Middle East it is essential to understand and comply with the intense natural environment, the diverse human cultures and the government regulatory systems.

What important role do you think landscape architecture plays in people’s lives?Landscape Architecture improves the quality of our lives by creating environments that reconnect us to nature and natural materials. This has a significant effect on our physical and emotional well-being.

In your opinion, what changes need to be adopted in the GCC landscaping industry to become on a par with the rest of the world?I think that GCC landscaping is very much on par with the rest of the world considering the environmental difficulties

Page 32: Landscape Magazine November 2014

30 i www.landscape-me.com i November 2014

to be overcome. Many projects here are very clever and innovative. However, I personally feel that a greater focus on planting forests, increasing tree plantations and planting density, by the industry, rather than pretty pattern making with paving would make a huge difference to the liveability of the GCC, now and for generations to come.

Do you think that the international standards for the landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they easily be applied when executing projects? The international standards are the ones used by the landscape industry already in my opinion. There will always be projects that fail to meet standards anywhere in the world.

What is the most frustrating aspect of your work and the most rewarding one? That pretty patterns and marketing spiels override the need for true environmental improvement for some clients. The most rewarding is the ability that Landscape Architecture gives you to travel all over the world and see places before they are developed. I have been able to do projects in 26 countries in my career so far. It is wonderful to see designs turn into reality and, in particular – trees growing healthily.

Who are your major clients and what major projects have you been involved with on their behalf?I have been fortunate enough to work with Heads of State from Asia, the Middle East and China. As well, with major private companies such as Zaha Hadid, London

(Unilever Development, Jakarta, Banyan Tree Resorts, Singapore(Phuket, Changmai, Bangkok, Kumagaigumi, Japan, (Instanbul Golf and Country Club), Mirae Assets, Korea, (Versace Waterfront), Tayl Investments, USA(Grand Marriott Hotel, Kabul), ALDAR, UAE (Ansam Golf Residences, Yas Island).

Where do you see the GCC in 10 years from now with respect to developments and landscaping? The GCC is producing many of the finest developments in the world and there will be many more to come. As the landscapes mature the environmental and overall liveability of the GCC should outpace most other regions.

As someone who is well established within the industry, what do you see as the main challenges we face in the next 12 months? The world remains unstable and there appears to be a five year financial crisis cycle occurring regularly. We may see that in many parts of the world in the next 12 months. For the Middle East the biggest challenge is resolving human conflicts in the region.

Finally, please conclude by evaluating Khatib & Alami position in the market and share any relevant information about current projects?Khatib & Alami is a significant company in the market due to its being in the GCC and in 27 countries for more than 50 years. The professional staff numbers over 470. The company has many projects all over the Middle East and provides consultancy services including integrated Architectural, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Interior Design, Project Management and Cost control services to its clients. At present, our clients include ALDAR, Barclays Bank, Volvo, MMUP Qatar, Royal Oman Police, Al Habtoor Group, Gems Education, Silicon Oasis, Dubai Municipality, EMAAR, Dubai Properties, Sorough Developments, Meraas Developments, TECOM Investments. Planting Trees in theUrban

environment

Planting trees and palms in the urban environment can be a challenge for professionals striving to create long-lasting and safe landscapes. Above ground stakes and guy wires affect the design aesthetic and safety in gardens and parks. Platipus invented the first tree anchoring system with no unsightly stakes or guy wires more than 30 years ago, and thanks to continuous innovation the company has developed a range of solutions for all tree planting situations

Planting with AnchorsRootball fixing is the preferred method for supporting trees and palms underground when there are no buried services. The three or four anchors are driven into the ground to the required depth and then load locked into their working position to an exact and measurable load. The Plati-Mat is then placed on top of the rootball to spread the load and protect the roots, and the wire rope threaded through each anchor point and tightened through the ratchet tensioner. The system naturally degrades to release the roots after three to five years and creates an aesthetically pleasing finish to the landscape. If required stainless steel variants may be used to provide permanent support to trees that are planted in coastal environments with high levels of salinity, or on sites which are constantly exposed to high winds or on-structure applications where root development is restricted by shallow and narrow planting pits.

Urban planting and roof gardens

There are situations where standard tree anchors cannot be installed due to buried services, shallow soil and most notably on roof gardens where the water proofing of the planting pit is of paramount importance. The D-MAN is a new solution specifically designed to replace the traditional deadman (kerbstones or wooden sleepers) for these situations. The system is composed of a strong, compact and lightweight cell that has a distinctive letterbox style anchor point providing excellent stability to the tree. Its design incorporates four unique cups that can store valuable water and moisture for tree growth and root development and also allows ample space of effective drainage at the base of the planting pit. In addition the D-MAN cells can be easily connected together and stacked to build up large planting areas, adding structural support and protecting roof gardens from damage.

Choosing the correct tree anchoring system• What is the height and circumference of the tree or palm?• What is the size of root area or rootball?• Will the planting pit restrict the growth of the roots?• Are there buried services on site such as electricity or fibre optic cables?• What is the soil type and conditions in the planting pit or planter?

Innovative irrigation and aeration systemTrees and palms need effective irrigation and aeration and traditional systems often distribute water unequally around the roots, or water flows

directly to the bottom of the planting pit. Platipus developed the Piddler tree irrigation and aeration system using a special membrane that delivers water and air evenly and laterally around the roots directly targeting the root zone. This cost effective system is quick to assemble, can be tailored to size and is suitable for all rootball dimensions.

Platipus Anchors Group Platipus have been the market leaders in tree anchoring since 1982 working on such prestigious sites as the London Olympics 2012 and Four Freedoms Park, New York. We can provide AutoCAD drawings and design advice to landscape architects and installation demonstrations and training to local contractors.

As a specialist mechanical earth anchoring manufacturer Platipus also provides slope stabilization and erosion control solutions, buoyancy control to pipelines and anchoring to temporary structures. Two decades after the end of the war, Beirut is still in the process of defining itself. Its physical incompleteness is mirrored

in its society, in its ongoing struggle to come to terms with its past and contend with the complexity of its present. The painful recent cost of this struggle is visible in a new memorial space introduced into the fabric of the city. Located at the entrance of Beirut’s Central District, under the watchful eyes of the An Nahar building, the Gebran Tueni Memorial is both a tribute to an honourable journalist, as well as an open public space marking the entrance of Beirut’s newly rebuilt Central District. A single linear gesture carved in the ground narrates his beliefs and convictions, and everything that he stood and died for. These engraved potent words, written by Tueni over the years culminate in a 4.9 meter granite monolith bearing his unforgettable oath delivered to the Lebanese people prior to his assassination.

The memorial is set in a plane of granite bands 15, nine, and 57cm wide, inspired from his birth date, 15 September 1957. The olive tree marking the beginning of the memorial, along with the oak trees and thyme plantings, are all nostalgic Lebanese species hinting at his deep patriotic affinity. Loose pebbles under the olive tree, engraved with his name, are meant to be taken by all visitors, and will be continually replenished by his An Nahar colleagues as an act of constant remembrance. At night, programmed lighting reveals his words and

Green roofs for public schools in Buenos Aires:

Making the City Greener

Buenos Aires Green City is one of the strategic plans that the city government in office has been developing over the last two years to foster a more

environmentally friendly and conscious city.

by Jimena Martignoni

Page 51: Landscape Magazine November 2014

49 i www.landscape-me.com i November 2014

There are several lines of work and implementation, such as energy, sustainable mobility, waste management and environmental quality. Among these plans, “Sustainable Schools” incorporates the use of environmentally friendly technologies and green roofs in the new public elementary schools of the city. The public schools in Argentina are funded by tax revenue and administered by the government; in the city, some of them are funded by the City Government.

Among other kinds of plans which promote new cultural buildings and areas, the renovation project for the traditional Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires (MAMBA)

also introduces the use of green façades. The City of Buenos Aires, which covers an area of 200 km2 and has a regular population of three million, gained autonomy from the national government in 1996, when it changed its name to Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires. The Metropolitan Area includes another 40 “municipios” (boroughs) covering a total urban area of 2,440 km2, with a total population of almost 13.5 million, and is administered by the Province´s Government. Although the City Government has political and legal force only within the jurisdiction of the autonomous city, it is starting to create connections with the province to deliver a more effective and holistic implementation of any programs

intending to solve the problems that affect cities today.

One of the most representative examples is the idea of replicating the Metrobus - the rapid transit system which has been implemented within the city - in the borough of “Vicente Lopez”, situated immediately adjacent to the city´s northern border. In the case that this proves to be as successful as it has been in the city, it could be replicated in other boroughs of the Metropolitan Area, therefore creating a more consistent and integrated public transport network.

For now, however, the program Buenos Aires Green City focuses only on plans and projects located within

Euryops pectinatus, or golden daisy bush, and those in the sedum family, whose main attribute is their drought-tolerance; in these projects, the latter are represented by Echeveria runyonii (topsy turvy), Mesembryanthemum sp (ice plant), Uncaria tomentosa (cat´s claw) and Bulbine caulescens (snake flower).

Some of the roofs present intimate spaces with benches and colourful art that, together, generate an inviting ambience. In the school built in the southern district of the city, the project also incorporates an orchard, encouraging the use and practice of urban agriculture as another environmentally friendly action. The courtyards of this school showcase grassed areas and flowering climbing plants which are meant to cover the painted walls to make an even greener and more eye-catching space. Large trees, some planted anew and some transplanted, and clusters of herbaceous plants complete the design of these areas where kids gather and play.

These green roofs are the first to be implemented in the city and consequently represent new challenges mainly associated with maintenance. Because these constructions are new alternatives having higher initial costs and more demanding maintenance tasks than other traditional options, they still need some time to be completely accepted. Still, they´ve been successfully received among local people and particular clients such as schools´ staff.

It is hoped that all upcoming projects, both public and private, can incorporate the use of green roofs and walls. With a greener city, we´ll live a better life.

reduction, increase of biodiversity, plus the creation of new amenity spaces and learning opportunities - the green roofs are implemented in all new constructions funded by the city, whenever that is possible.

The green schools or sustainable schools increase the number of public schools in the city providing education opportunities for low-income social groups and, even more importantly, are designed as low-energy consumption buildings. Planned and built by the Ministry of Urban Development, a division of the City Government, these schools have solar panels (that feed the hot water system) and LED lighting systems; the reduction of energy usage, carbon emissions and electricity costs remain the most important goals. In order to

complement the use of green technologies, the new schools incorporate the construction of green roofs.

So far, three schools in the city have incorporated the use of green roofs, most of them accessible. In these cases, the intention of the project is also to provide a working example of a sustainable, vegetative roof, where a teacher might bring students for the purpose of experiencing first-hand the roofs environmental benefits, as ancillary to instruction.

Two of the schools are located in the Palermo and Belgrano neighbourhoods, in the northern area of the city, and the third is located in Villa Soldati, in the southern area. Since the northern area of the city has been historically more developed and consequently became more prestigious, at the time that the southern area became particularly neglected, all new projects in the last few years attempt to change this stigmatic situation, creating a more balanced map of implementation plans.

The green roofs of these new schools are planted with shrubby species such as

urban parkthe city´s boundaries. Although moving at a slow pace, mainly dependant on budgets and priorities, these projects seem to set precedents in the way that the city´s new requirements have to be met. At the top of the agenda, appears mitigating the heat island effect, a problem that affects Buenos Aires and all large urban concentrations on the planet today.

As part of these new strategic perspectives, in December 2012 the city government passed Law 4.428 or the Law of Green Roofs which promotes the use of green roofs in all new constructions or implementation of such technologies and in exchange offers municipal tax breaks. Known by their many particular contributions to the environment -such as the moderation of the urban heat island effect, storm water management, improvement of air quality, noise

booK desCriPtioN:the Hamptons have long been a haven for the world’s elite. its breathtaking vistas inspired Walt Whitman and Winslow Homer; its social forebears include Gerald and sara murphy entertaining

léger and Fitzgerald; Kurt vonnegut, Jackson Pollock, and andy Warhol all found inspiration on america’s riviera. spectacular estates from the Gilded age rival the sprawling mansions of the bold-faced names attracted to this beachfront strip on long island each summer. the big book of the Hamptons celebrates the mystique and romance of these iconic and extravagant neighborhoods, exploring the architecture and gardens of these secluded retreats, brought to life with amazing imagery in a deluxe volume.
