ST. MARY PARISH MARION, OHIO

FROM THE PASTOR:Dear Friends in Christ,

Now that we have been able to resume the public celebration of Mass on our usual schedule, and have welcomed into the Church those who had been preparing to do so during the Easter Vigil, and celebrated First Communions, it is starting to feel more like a normal summer. In some ways it is better than last summer; for example, for those who work in farms. I recently reviewed a video I recorded on June 19, 2019 showing extensive flooding in farm fields and front lawns near here. Many farmers were not able to plant at all last year. This year, despite a very wet spring, the fields look a lot better and we can see corn, soybeans, and other crops growing all around us.

At the same time we know that other aspects of life have been changed and the rest of the summer will not look totally normal. Just ask any baseball fan! There is still a lot of uncertainty about plans for summer and autumn activities. Uncertainty can lead to fear. It's good, then, for us to contemplate the words of this Sunday's Gospel: "do not be afraid." The Lord Jesus repeatedly tells us "do not be afraid," not because the world is safe or predictable, but because our heavenly Father will take care of His children. That is something that does not change, despite the changes and chances of this passing world.

Sincerely Yours, in Christ, Father Thomas BufferPastor

“SHINE LIKE STARS”We are finishing our long-term project of restoring all the stained-glass windows in the church and the last window to be restored will be re-installed in the North transept this month. The scaffolding currently set up the South transept will also allow us to paint the walls and ceilings to match the painting executed last year in the North transept. Renting the large and highly specialized scaffolding is costing a little more than $9,000. To defray that cost, we are asking parishioners to sponsor one or more of the gold stars that were painted on the transept ceiling. There are about 160 stars, and you can sponsor one or more for just $50 each. If every star is sponsored, that will defray the cost of the scaffolding. You may mail in a check, or place your contribution in an envelope marked “shine like stars” and put it in the collection basket at Mass. All contributions will be acknowledged in the bulletin, so please include your name with your contribution (unless you wish to be anonymous). Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:14-15).

Parish council is looking for several new members to start this Fall. If you are interested in serving on the council, please call the parish office (740-382-2118) or Lisa Troiano (740-262-2354).

SANCTUARY CANDLEwill burn this week for the special

intention of Rosemary Boblenz by her family.

Next week, we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. For more information, visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

"WHERE ARE YOU GOING?"This summer, the seminarians from the Pontifical College Josephinum will host a Quo Vadis vocations retreat for young men entering grades 9th-12th to provide them an opportunity to reflect on their universal call to holiness and on the possibility of discerning a specific call to the diocesan priesthood. Quo Vadis provides an opportunity for young men to explore questions related to discerning:

• What is God’s plan for my life?• What is the discernment process like? • What is the seminary like? • What are the challenges of seminary life?

The Quo Vadis retreat will be held July 26-July 29, 2020, at the Pontifical College Josephinum. The retreat will include talks by local priests and seminarians on the priesthood, virtue, and fatherhood. In addition, Quo Vadis offers the structure of Holy Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharistic Adoration, and time for personal reflection. Registration ends July 16, 2020.A Note About COVID-19: Due to the current trends in Ohio public health policy in reopening Ohio, we are moving forward and hope to once again offer the Quo Vadis retreat this summer. We will follow all safety guidelines outlined by the Governor and the Ohio Department of Health should we be able to host Quo Vadis.

FORMED PICK OF THE WEEK: Lectio Divina: Hearing God's

Voice through Scripture

This week's FORMED PICK OF THE WEEK is an hour-long audio on Lectio Divina (which means Sacred Reading). It is an ancient form of prayer that the Church encourages for all her members. It includes vocal prayer, meditative prayer and enables us to be open to gifts of contemplation if God wishes to send us those gifts. This is a great way to grow in prayer and union with God!

To get your free subscription to FORMED (gifted to us by the Knights of Columbus):1. Go to formed.org/signup2. Select your parish. When prompted for PARISH NAME, please type in our zip code (43302) or type St Mary, Marion Ohio. For some reason, just typing St. Mary does not work.3. Register with your name and email address4. Check that email account for a link to begin using FORMED
