Inthataccount, awomanofinfluenceinthecommunityshowshospitalitytoElisha.Ingratitudeforhersupport,Elishapondershowhemight repay her and asks his attendant, Gehazi, for his thoughts. Pause. What do we usually think of in terms of gifts to those who do something nice for us? Gehazi could have easily said, “make sure to send a Thank You note” or “why not sendflowers”or“maybewecouldhelpwiththespringcleaningorhelpwiththelandscaping.”Thesewouldbehelpfuland normal signs of gratitude. But, Gehazi knows something we too often forget: prophets have God’s ear and the LORD respondswhenHisprophetspray.Gehazididn’tgetlostinthe“normal,”hewasabletoseeintotherealandinfluentialpower of God and view the situation from that vantage point. And, so, Gehazi brings up the fact that the woman would liketohaveachild.Thisisamazing!And,ElisharespondswithgreatconfidenceinGod.ElishabuiltarelationshipwithGod, learned fromhis teacherElijah, anddidn’tbat aneyeat the suggestion.Withboldconfidence in theLORD’sfaithfulness to him, Elisha tells his patroness, “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.” It is a prophetic declaration that not only predicts the future, but creates the spiritual gateway through which that grace can be given. Words spoken in the spirit of prophecy have an effect in the world. The prophet Amos speaks this spiritual truth when he declares: “Indeed, the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). This might be a new thought for some of us. But, it is well attested in how Jesus lived and how the Church grew. Peter quoted theprophetJoel, inhisfirstsermonafterPentecost, anddescribedwhatJesuswasgiftingthroughtheHolySpirit:“‘Itwillcometopassinthelastdays,’Godsays,‘thatIwillpouroutaportionofmyspirituponallflesh.Yoursonsanddaughtersshall prophesy […]’” (Acts 2:17; cf. Joel 3:1). When Jesus speaks of prophets in our Gospel today, he upholds an attitude of honor towards the gift of prophecy that Elisha walked in and that we walk in through Christ. Through Baptism and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we step into this gifting. We can begin to walk in this gifting of the Spirit by allowing the Sacraments, God’s word in Scripture, and a prayer of worship to shape and form how we look at the world and ourselves. DoweseetheworldwiththeconfidenceofGehaziandElisha?DowehonorsuchspiritualgiftsasprophecylikeJesus?Do we believe that this lifestyle is possible? This way of seeing the world doesn’t need to remain a foreign concept, it can become a lived experience. Start small. Start with the reading of Scripture and pondering the Sacraments and all that they imply: We live in a world in which the LORD is active, real, and desires to build His kingdom through you and me. The saints put this on display in profound ways. But, the Holy Spirit resides in the Body of Christ, the Church, of which you are a member. I think God wants to give His Church the gift of prophecy. Prophecy builds up, encourages, consoles, and affects the world - when done in the Holy Spirit and in Jesus’ Name - by freeing, healing, and drawing people into new blessings. We don’t need to fear what we don’t understand, we can simply ask for understanding. If we blink, we will missallofthisinthefirstreading.Let’snotblinkandmissthissummons.Let’sallowthefireofthataccountofElishaandJesus to ignite a longing for more of God’s spiritual gifts in our lives.
