PLN Adds Four New Coal-Power Plants to the Java-Madura-Bali Power Grid

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has inaugurated the operation of four steam-generated power plants (PLTU) in Java with a total power capacity of 2,550 megawatts. The four new power plants are located in Pacitan, East Java.

The senior manager of corporate communication for the Sate Power Board (PLN), Bambang Dwiyanto told Beritabali.com that the four coal-driven power plants will enhance the Java-Madura-Bali power grid. “Although the power reserves for Java-Madura-Bali power grid are currently sufficient, with power consumption increasing 7% each year and peak consumption at 22,381 megawatts, we need to add a minimum additional capacity of 1,500-2,000 megawatts annually, “ he explained.

Bambang Dwiyanto said the four new plants form part of an accelerated program to use coal-powered stations to increase power capacities by 10,000 megawatts in part of what is known as Phase One of the Fast Track Program (FTP-1).

To date, 5,070 megawatts of the targeted 10,000 megawatts have been successfully brought on line. Meanwhile, 2,115 megawatts are currently undergoing testing prior to commissioning, while a final 2,119 megawatt are in the construction process and scheduled for completion in 2014.

“We will continue eco-airport developments in other places,” Soetomo pledged.

Seeking to advance the concept of eco-airports in Indonesia, PT Angkasa Pura has signed an agreement with Sintesa Group-Sun Edison. The signing of t h e a g r e e m e n t w a s a breakthrough in realizing the development of eco-airports in

Meanwhile the CEO of the Sintesa Group, Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, praised the agreement as a step forward in sustainable development principles.

Gday again punters and welcome to the latest and greatest weekly Newspaper In Bali. A fairly laclustre week as far as sports goes on the island now that the footy has finished, but I will say the A.F.L. trade is getting some fairly good swaps happening with probably the best deal being Nick Delsanto going from saints to North Melbourne. Norths would have to be happy with that . Ben Macevoy from Saints is heading to have a run with the Hawks. Dale Thomas is a very happy boy with a package believed to be worth 700k a year over 4-5 years

with Carlton. The biggest winner in the league would have to be old mate Buddy Franklin, who has gone to Sydney on a 10 million dollar, 9 year deal. You'd have to happy with those kind of numbers. The trade period for free agents will finish this Friday and I expect to see a few surprises at the last minute.

Moving along this week sees the Galungan festivities on the island and I hope all my Balinese and Hindu friends enjoy the time with their families and close friends. Galungan is a Balinese holiday celebrating the victory of dharma over adharma. It marks the time when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth. The last day of the celebration is Kuningan, when they return. The date is calculated according to the 210-day Balinese calendar. Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremonies. The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their former homes, and the current inhabitants have a responsibility to be hospitable through prayers and offerings. The most obvious sign of the celebrations are the penjor - bamboo poles weighed down by offerings suspended at the end. These can be seen by the side of roads. A number of days around the Kuningan day itself have special names, with particular activities being organized.

It's a great time to be on the island with most Balinese wearing their traditional clothes for the more important days. Don't be in a hurry to get much done though, as it is a public holiday, not dissimilar to our Easter. I for one will be having a few quiet ones in the village with some local friends over the period.

On a final note I would like to direct our loyal readers to page 15 in this week's issue and ask you all to check the High Flyers at the Dynasty Hotel. I had the chance to go and check it out the other day and what can I say, it's a great setup and a great afternoon with the family. The apparatus is setup to a world scale standard with trained handlers helping you through every step. You basically get fitted in a harness and can do a heap of acrobatic jumps and things. It is great. The boss has given all readers of the Kuta Weekly a free jump for anyone who is keen, provided you quote the Kuta Weekly when you get there. I think it's a great afternoon for the kids with some great photo opportunities. I hope all our readers take advantage of the free offer and thank High Flyers for the support.

Ok folks that's about it for the week, with the exception of a big happy birthday to old mate Agung for last Friday night and a bloody big thank you for a great party. I do believe we all had a few too many and all paid the next day. Thanks to the entire Supercar Club for making the night a good one at the Brazilian Aussie, and cheers to the staff for putting up with the crew hitting it. A great night was had by all. Congratulations again mate and we are all looking forward to your next one. Selamat ulang tahun (Happy Birthday).

Ok now I will leave you to enjoy your time here and trust that you try your best to remember, I take things like honor and loyalty seriously. It's more important to me than any materialistic thing I could have.

Enjoy Your Week,

ALIASJ………

As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali.

The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model.Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)This is the right of use over state-owned

(crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement.

Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in

Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIKThis structure is a regularly practiced

procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner.

Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee.

The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Closure of the clinic has halted BAWA's animal adoption program that was finding homes for 70 former street dogs every month. Adopted dogs were sterilized, vacc inated, soc ia l ized and presented in good condition to families who were educated to care for their new pets. Free follow-up care was provided.

Official action has deprived Balinese families of these free services. BAWA encourages the Balinese people who account for 60% of up to 40 calls a day to its hotline to keep calling +62- (0)811389004.

BAWA will continue to help – while, where and how it can.

The article reports that officers from 3 agencies and Gianyar Satpol PP closed the BAWA clinic and quotes Satpol's Gede Daging, “Because there were so many violations committed by BAWA, we invited all these agencies to participate.”

The statement is misleading. BAWA had only recently been officially advised that it was operating without an Amdal – an environmental permit introduced only last year and of which the association was unaware.

BAWA's application for an Amdal is in process. Most Bali businesses, including vet clinics, do not have an Amdal.

BAWA's animal rescue

BAWA Issued Statement on Current Status and Continuing Efforts on Behalf of Bali Dogs

Following the publication on Balidiscovery.com of BAWA Barks No More, Paula Hodgson on behalf of the Bali Street Dog Fund (Australia) and BAWA has written seeking to clarify a number of points.Paula Hodgson's Letter to Bali Update

I would l ike to correct impressions created by your 3 October article, BAWA Barks No More, sourced from Radar Bali.

While BAWA's Ubud clinic has been forcibly closed, the Association continues to operate its 24/7 emergency hotline, its free animal rescue service (now restricted) and island-wide free animal care and disease control education programs in schools and villages.

BAWA Barks Backa c t i v i t i e s h a v e b e e n

severely curtailed in accordance with a regulation prohibiting the transport of animals across regency borders. The regulation was introduced specifically to prevent movement of animals from rabies-positive regencies to rabies-negative regencies. Now, all Bali regencies are rabies-positive and the regulation is redundant. At the very least, the authori t ies should urgent ly consider changing the restriction for animal ambulance transport.

The regulation means that people are breaking the law by taking their injured animals from Gianyar or Klungkung, regencies, for example, to veterinary clinics in Badung, where most of the clinics are. To take an injured animal to a quarantine clinic is far safer than leaving it on the street or beach.

Some officials in Bali seem determined to axe an association that for 7 years has provided free services to Bali 's animals, communities and industries such as tourism. Bali will suffer if common sense does not prevail.

Already, BAWA's wide network of international supporters is outraged at what is widely viewed as a persecution campaign that disgraces the island.

Irish Vasectomy

After having their 11th child, an Irish couple

decided that, that was enough, as they couldn't

afford a larger bed. the husband went to his

doctor and told him that he and his wife didn't

want to have any more children ...

The doctor told him there was a procedure

called a vasectomy that would fix the problem

but it was expensive. A less costly alternative

was to go home, get a large firecracker,

light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can

up to his ear and count to 10.

The husband said to the doctor, "B'Jayzus, I

may not be the smartest guy in the world, but I

don't see how putting a firework in a beer can

next to my ear is going to help me with my

problem."

"Trust me, it will do the job", said the doctor.

So the man went home, lit a cracker and put it

in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and

began to count:

"1, 2, 3, 4, 5," at which point he paused, and

placed the beer can between his legs so he

could continue counting on his other hand.

This procedure also works in New Zealand and

Tasmania

He bemoaned a failure of authorities to enforce zoning laws and set back rules as leading to the diminishing area of public beaches in Bali.

Wayan Rasna a professional surfer from Jimbaran said he and his fellow villagers are now banned from using public beaches in front of hotels.

At a recent conference held in Ketewel in Bali, Rasna said that the next generations of aspiring Balinese surfers are encountering difficulties to practice as hotels and villas prohibit their access to the beach. Said Rasna: “These hotels and villas have been built along the coastline

The Bali Daily (The Jakarta Post) ran an article “Beaches are closed to public and surfers, sorry!” in its October 16, 2013 edition underlining the increasing problem of Bali's disappearing shorelines, illegally commandeered and usurped by villa and resort developers.

Despite zoning laws that principally keep beaches open to public use, many tourist-related facilities manage to exert hegemony over adjacent beachfronts, barring the public and the Balinese from lawful access.

Making the problem socially acute, a number of traditional Balinese rituals and celebrations include elements that must be performed on the edge of the sea, are chased away by security teams of hotel and villas who find Balinese culture a bother and an inconvenience.

A young Chinese couple are facing cr iminal punishment for "selling" their infant daughter and using the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone.

Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against them for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby.

Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high-end sports shoes and other goods, it said.

Apple's products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year.

But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children.

"Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees," one said.

Some Chinese, especially in rural areas, have a traditional preference for sons though reports did not say if the child's gender was also a factor in the case.

O n l i n e c o m m e n t a r y condemned the couple, though some used black humour to describe modern Chinese society and the

quest for wealth."So co ld-b looded!

These people do not deserve the right to be parents!" said one person in a microblog posting.

"This is good business no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys," said another posting.

An off ic ial of the prosecutor's office handling the case expressed worry o v e r " s e n s a t i o n a l i s m " surrounding the affair but declined to comment further.

Shanghai police could not be reached for comment.

Reports did not give the amount the couple received for the child, but their online postings asked for 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 and $8,200).

Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s, including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget-conscious iPhone 5c in China.

Fukuppy mascot draws sniggersJapan's Fukushima Industries has blamed a "misunderstanding" as the internet erupted in sniggers over its "Fukuppy" mascot, a name that recalls a catalogue of mishandling at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The Osaka-based refrigerator maker, whose name derives from its founder and has nothing to do with the a rea h i t by an a tomic catastrophe, has been much ridiculed on social networking sites for its egg-like mascot with blue wings and red feet.

"I'm Fukuppy. Nice to meet you," the smiling character with a human face tells visitors to the company's website. "I think I'm kind with a strong sense of justice but people say I'm a little bit scatterbrained."

A company spokeswoman, who declined to be named, said "A lot of media are reporting on our mascot, which created misunderstanding. In order to get rid of the confusion, we will announce our stance on the issue on our website later in the day."

The firm would not comment on

why they chose the intriguing moniker or whether they had considered how it might be rendered in other languages.

One of Japan's biggest makers of industrial cooling systems, Fukushima Industries has offices around the country as well as across Asia, including in China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The firm said the name was nothing to do with the Fukushima disaster, the world's worst nuclear

accident since Chernobyl in 1986, although the company has a sales office in Fukushima prefecture.

T h e c l e a n - u p a t Fukushima, where reactors flung radioactive substances into the air, soil and sea in the days and weeks after it was hit by the March 2011 tsunami, has been beset with problems, and continues to come under the international spotlight.

A series of leaks of radiation-contaminated water over recent months, which came

on top of a power outage caused by a stray rat, have added to the impression that the plant's operator is hapless.

As the name of the broken nuclear plant, "Fukushima" has come to worldwide attention, but it is also a family name, the characters for which mean "fortunate or good island".

The name "Fukuppy" is likely a mixture of the first part of the company name Fuku and the end of the word "happy".

Balinese Hindu will celebrate the Kuningan Day, a day of prosperity, on November 2nd,2013, marking the end of the Galungan Day celebration.

Kuningan Day is a time for commemoration as ancestors return to heaven after ten days dwelling on earth a n d w h e n t h e B a l i n e s e s a y thanks to the gods for their mercy to the humankind. On the day, Balinese will have holidays and be seen visiting each other and sharing fun. Every village in Bali will c e l e b r a t e t h e Kuningan Day in grand style, with colourful festivals held at temples in some parts of Bali Island.

Locals will be seen redecorating the bamboo pole, locally called penjor, which has been erecting in front of each house compound's entrance gate since a day before Galungan, by taking down the white clothes and substituted

them with the yellow ones, symbolizing the prosperity.

The celebration of Kuningan Day is always coincided with the temple's anniversary in Serangan Island. The island lies in southern part of Denpasar, and takes around 15 minutes drive to reach the area by passing the bridge

n o w n e a r i n g complet ion. The temple itself will be jam-packed by the people dressed in traditional Balinese costumes for three days.

Kuningan Day celebrat ion with ritual procession will be a unique sight for travellers to Bali, especially when the prayers cross the s h o r t d i s t a n c e

ocean by chartering boats. In the past, one should go by boat to reach

Serangan Island. However, since the reclamation has taken place, a bridge has been built to link Serangan Island to Denpasar.

Titanic violin sells for $1.5 million

A violin that was being played as the Titanic went down was sold for 900,000 pounds ($1.46 million) at auction, a r e c o r d p r i c e f o r memorabilia from the doomed ocean liner.

Band leader Wal lace Hartley played the instrument, trying to calm passengers as the ship slipped into the frozen waters of the North Atlantic in April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

Hartley's band played the hymn "Nearer, My God, To Thee" as passengers climbed into lifeboats. Hartley and his seven fellow band members all died after choosing to play on. More than 1,500 people died.

When Hartley's body was recovered more than 10 days after the disaster, the violin was found in a leather case strapped to him, according to the folklore that has grown up around the event.

It was given back to Hartley's fiancée Maria Robinson in England, and, after she died in 1939, it was donated to her local Salvation Army band and later passed on, eventually to the current owner, whose identity has not been disclosed.

A silver plate on the German-made viol in is engraved "For WALLACE on the occasion of our ENGAGEMENT from MARIA".

On sale with its case initialled W.H.H, the violin had a guide price o f 3 0 0 , 0 0 0

pounds, Chrissie Aldridge, o f auct ioneers Henry Aldridge and Son, said.

"It is a record," she said after the sale. Asked who had purchased the violin, she would only say: "A British collector."

R e d i s c o v e r e d i n 2006, it took specialists such as forensic science e x p e r t ' s y e a r s t o authenticate the instrument.

However some people still doubt whether the violin is genuine, believing it could not have survived being submerged in sea water.

The auction house said it had attracted interest from collectors all over the world. More than 300,000 people viewed it during a three-month exhibition in the United States. ($1 = 0.6178 British pounds)

I received this from a reader this week… she thought you would enjoy it!

ARE YOU WITH THE RIGHT PARTNER?

During a seminar, a woman asked,” How do I know if I am with the right partner?”The author then noticed that there was a large man sitting next to her so he said, “It depends. Is that your partner?” In all seriousness, she answered “How do you know?” Let me answer this question because the chances are good that it's weighing on your mind replied the author.

Here's the answer.

Every relationship has a cycle… In the beginning; you fall in love with your partner. You anticipate their calls, want their touch, and like their idiosyncrasies. Falling in love wasn't hard. In fact, it was a completely natural and spontaneous experience. You didn't have to DO anything. That's why it's called “falling” in love.

People in love sometimes say, “I was swept of my feet.”Picture the expression. It implies that you were just standing there; doing nothing, and then something happened TO YOU.

Falling in love is a passive and spontaneous experience. But after a few months or years of being together, the euphoria of love fades. It's a natural cycle of EVERY relationship.

Slowly but surely, phone calls become a bother (if they come at all), touch is not always welcome (when it happens), and your spouse's idiosyncrasies, instead of being cute, drive you nuts. The symptoms of this stage vary with every relationship; you will notice a dramatic difference between the initial stage when you were in love and a much duller or even angry subsequent stage.

At this point, you and/or your partner might start asking, “Am I with the right partner?” And as you reflect on the euphoria of the love you once had, you may begin to desire that experience with someone else. This is when relationships breakdown.

The key to succeeding in a relationship is not finding the right person; it's learning to love the person you found.

People blame their partners for their unhappiness and look outside for fulfillment. Extramarital fulfillment comes in all shapes and sizes.

Infidelity is the most common. But sometimes people turn to work, a hobby, friendship, excessive TV, or abusive substances. But the answer to this dilemma does NOT lie outside your relationship. It lies within it.

I'm not saying that you couldn't fall in love with someone else. You could. And TEMPORARILY you'd feel better. But you'd be in the same situation a few years later.

Because:

The key to succeeding in a Relationship is not finding the right person; it's learning to love the Person you found.

SUSTAINING love is not a passive or spontaneous experience. You have to work on it day in and day out. It takes time, effort, and energy. And most importantly, it demands WISDOM. You have to knowWHAT TO DO to make it work. Make no mistake about it.

Marc Marquez says disqualification for failure to pit in Australian MotoGP was too harsh

Phillip Island was meant to be the place Marc Marquez re-wrote the h i s t o r y b o o k s a n d become the youngest ever MotoGP world champion.

But instead of creating a l a s t i n g m e m o r y a t t h e Australian Grand Prix, the 20-year-old series leader wants to quickly forget the moment he was sensationally disqualified from Sunday's race.

Officials waved the black flag at the Honda pilot with five laps to go after he failed to pit during a mandatory two-lap window.

Organisers had ordered all riders prior to the race to swap bikes before the end of lap 10, after tyre provider Bridgestone admitted it could not guarantee beyond that

distance the safety of their rear rubber slicks because of the Victorian circuit's new tarmac.

But Marquez stayed on the track an extra lap, putting him in the lead while pole-sitter - and eventual winner - Jorge Lorenzo and others pitted.

The rookie later made contact with Lorenzo as he re-joined the track before settling into second place.

He conceded his team made a "big mistake" and prevented him from a podium finish or even victory, but claimed the penalty was too harsh.

"The penalty, it's very, very tough," he said.

"It was possible to make some other penalty, some seconds (off) or drive-through or something else - not the

black flag."I'm disappointed."We had big confusion

with the planning because we thought that it was possible to go (into the pits) in that lap.

"I just followed what they showed to me on the pit wall.

"In the end, it's the whole team. We cannot say one person (is responsible).

"Anyway, we learn about that. Now, we will forget that and work for Japan (next week)."

His exclusion from the race - alongside Australians Bryan Staring and Damian Cudlin - meant he was unable to collect any championship points.

His 43-point lead over Lorenzo has narrowed to just 18, with two races (Motegi and Valencia) of the season remaining.

But the Spaniard remains hopeful of still closing out the 2013 title.

" T h e positive thing is that we were there - I was f i g h t i n g f o r victory with Jorge a n d D a n i (Pedrosa)," he said.

"I feel so strong and that was the most important.

“ S o f o r Japan, I will be the same Marc like here."

24 Oct - 30 Oct 2013Aries – March 21 to April 20Risqué Rams – the Sun joins retro Mercury in your sex/money zone, so lust and loot are somewhat challenging at the moment. And serious Saturn reminds you to accept responsibility for the role you've played in any relationship rifts o r f i n a n c i a l f i a s c o s .Your emotions will fluctuate wildly on Friday … so don't make matters worse by playing petty power games.

Taurus – April 21 to May 21A romance goes through a rocky stage, as Mercury reverses through your relationship zone [from October 21-November 11]. So tread carefully, steer clear of ridiculous rumors, and avoid making tactless remarks that unintentionally hurt others. Looking for a partner? It's up to you to make the first move – but expect a few hiccups along the highway to love.

Gemini – May 22 to June 21When Mercury reverses, you can feel irritable and impulsive. So – between October 21 and November 11 – avoid using words as weapons. And don't let an impulsive outburst ruin an otherwise wonderful relationship. With Venus visiting your partnership zone [until November 5] it's time to stop arguing; be a gracious Gemini; and hold out the olive branch of peace.

Cancer – June 22 to July 23Crabs are susceptible to flattery but don't let someone sweet talk you into doing something you really don't want to do. And, when it comes to a child, teenager or friend, avoid jumping to half-baked conclusions. Check the facts thoroughly first. Expect some tension between personal, professional and relationship responsibilities on Friday. Cool compromise is the key.

Leo – July 24 to August 23With Mercury reversing through your domestic zone [from October 21 until November 11] family dynamics are frustrating at the moment. So it's time for clever Cats to be unusually patient, communicate clearly and consult often. Saturday is your pick of the week, as the super Sun/Neptune trine motivates your inner muse and kicks your creativity into the stratosphere.

Libra – September 24 to October 23Have you lost your Libran mojo? Expect love and lust to improve as the Sun charges through the last degrees of your sign. But with Mercury going retro in your finance zone, money matters continue to be problematic. Your diplomatic skills will be called on, as loved ones become embroiled in complicated misunderstandings. Play the peacemaker but don't get caught in the crossfire!

Scorpio – October 24 to November 22Avoid getting drawn into power struggles. If you're an adaptable Scorpio [sounds like an oxymoron!] you'll get through the week with less angst. Mercury is reversing through your sign, so it's time for a late spring clean as you tidy, organize, revise, research, pay bills and plough through paperwork. Get out your fine-tooth comb – the devil is definitely in the detail.

Sagittarius – November 23 to December 21Venus is visiting your sign, which makes you slightly more diplomatic than usual. But, with retro Mercury also in the mix, you still need to choose your words wisely. Saturday favors having plenty of frivolous fun, as the Moon and Jupiter make beautiful music together. Your motto for the week is from birthday great Pablo Picasso “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”

Capricorn – December 22 to January 20Don't be a carping critic! Avoid becoming bogged down in nit-picking negatives. This week favors plenty of positive thinking as you appreciate the glass being half-full, rather than half empty. Capable Capricorns are usually highly rational creatures, but don't overlook the importance of your inner voice. Your intuition will point you in the right direction … if you let it.

Aquarius – January 21 to February 19Avoid buying things you really don't need. Plus, with Mars marching through your shared finances zone, make sure you're being proactive about joint accounts or business partnerships. By the end of the week you'll have changed your mind about a job, colleague, work issue or your future direction. That's life – especially when you're an unpredictable Aquarian.

Virgo – August 24 to September 23It's time to enjoy the simple pleasures of home sweet home! Venus is visiting your domestic zone [until November 5] which highlights activities like craft, cooking, decorating, gardening, spending time with the family, relaxing in front of the TV and entertaining at home. But, with Mercury going retrograde, expect some communication chaos along the way!

Pisces – February 20 to March 20Having a positive attitude is great but make sure you're not adopting a 'Pisces Pollyanna approach' as you put your head in the sand and avoid real problems in your life. Saturday is your best day of the week, when the wonderful Sun/Neptune trine boosts romance, creativity and compassion. Some Fish will experience deja-vu, as you meet someone or go somewhere 'new'.

Fame, as a member of Faces, in 2012. Roderick David Stewart was born on 10 January 1945 at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London, the youngest of five children of Robert Stewart and Elsie Gilbart. His father was Scottish and had been a master builder in Leith, Edinburgh, while Elsie was English and had grown up in Upper Holloway in North London. Married in 1928, the couple had two sons and two daughters while living in Scotland, then they moved to Highgate. Stewart came after an eight-year gap following his youngest sibling; he was born at home during World War II. The family was neither affluent nor poor, and by all accounts Stewart was a spoiled child as the youngest Stewart has called his childhood "fantastically happy". He had an undistinguished record at Highgate Primary School and failed the eleven plus exam. He then attended the William Grimshaw Secondary Modern School in Hornsey. His father retired from the building trade at age 65, then opened a newsagent's shop on the Archway Road when Stewart was in his early teens; the family lived over the shop. Stewart's main hobby was railway modelling.

The Stewart family was mostly focused on football Robert had played on a local amateur side and managed some as well, and one of Stewart's earliest memories were the pictures of Scottish players such as George Young and Gordon Smith that his brothers had on the wall. Rod was the most talented footballer in the Stewart family and was a strong supporter of Arsenal F.C.. Combining natural athleticism with near-reckless aggression, he became captain of the school football team and played for Middlesex Schoolboys as centre-half.

The families were also great fans of the singer Al Jolson and would sing and play his hits. Stewart collected his records and saw his films, read books about him, and was influenced by his performing style and attitude towards his audience. His introduction to rock and roll was hearing Little Richard's 1956 hit "The Girl Can't Help It" and seeing Bill Haley & His Comets in concert. His father bought him a guitar in January 1959; the first song he learned was the folk tune "It Takes a Worried Man to Sing a Worried Song" and the first record he bought was Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody". In 1960. He went on to

A u s t r a l i a has only once beaten the four Home Nations to claim the grand slam - back in 1984 under coach Alan Jones and skipper Andrew Slack.

Their last attempt in 2009 failed in just the second match when they drew 20-20 with Ireland.

A 2013 scalp would be sweet revenge for the Wallabies, as they lost a series against the British and Irish Lions in June/July.

And while McKenzie says his side will obviously aim to beat all four Home Nations - plus second-week opponent Italy - just do not mention the words "grand slam" to him.

"I'm not going to sit here and talk about grand slams," McKenzie said.

"It's no different to scoring four tries to get a bonus point, you can spend your whole time

Zealand."You don't want anyone

sitting there thinking they've got a mortgage on a spot," McKenzie said.

"It actually didn't matter that Christian was injured, we were already taking him off and putting Toomua out there

a n y w a y t o reinforce depth."

Australia's 33 points on Saturday broke the record for the i r h ighest score against the All Blacks in New Zealand.

W h i l e i t was still a loss, McKenzie feels t h e s q u a d ' s combina t ions and structures have all trended enough in the right direction to

have stolen a march on their northern hemisphere rivals.

"They're coming off club environments so we should hopefully have some edge," he said.

However, he admits he is far from relaxed after the 3-0 Bledisloe Cup whitewash.

"I'm continually anxious," McKenzie tongue-in-cheek says with a laugh.

" I j udge myse l f on winning, so I don't sit here comfortably and say that it's been easy, or relaxed at all. Far from it.

"But I don't want it to be easy, because if it was easy you wouldn't be in the job. Someone else would still be there."

Elephant tries to 'eat' Aussie bridesmaid

O n e A u s s i e bride has had a w e d d i n g t o remember, and one tha t the e lephant wi l l never forget.

Guests at a wedding in Thailand were left stunned as

a three-year-old Indian elephant tried to eat one of the bridesmaids.

The hilarious moment was captured by well-known cinematographer Abraham Joffe, who was filming the wedding for the couple.

"She wasn't injured. It just licked her face and breathed down her throat. She just got this horrible elephant breath in her lungs," he said.

"She was a little bit embarrassed but they were all pretty laid back, being Aussies. It wasn't a prim and proper sort of day."

The elephant was a special guest at the wedding, and gave plenty of laughs for the guests.

"It was after the ceremony so everyone was getting pretty relaxed by that point," Sydney-based Joffe said.

"She had to get a cocktail straight away to wash the taste out of her mouth."

Status lost after accidental sex with bride

A groomsman has been acquitted of rape after a Chinese c o u r t r u l e d h e accidentally raped h i s f r i e n d ' s newlywed bride.

T h e b l u s h i n g bride, whose surname was Huang, was found by a county court in Guangxi Zhuang region to have accidentally climbed into the man's bed on her wedding night, reports suggest

The court ruled that the sex was consensual between Ms Huang and Mr Ruan, who was staying at the newlyweds' home in the country for the ceremony in August.

The court was told the mistake occurred when the bride returned from an outside toilet and entered Mr Ruan's room, believing the man in the bed was her husband, Mr Wu.

Mr Ruan did not resist her advances and had sex with Ms Huang.

The next morning, when she apparently realised her mistake, she leapt from the bed, claiming he raped her.

The newlyweds demanded Mr Huang pay them compensation and when he refused they filed a lawsuit.

McDonald's goes belly up in BoliviaAfter 14 years of presence in the country, and despite a l l the exist ing c a m p a i g n s a n d having a network, t h e c h a i n w a s forced to close the eight restaurants that remained open in the three main c i t i e s : L a P a z , Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

It is a question of the first Latin-American country that will remain without any McDonald's, and the first country in the world where the company has to close because it persists in having their numbers in the red for over a decade.

The impact for the creative and marketing managers has

been so strong that a documentary was filmed under the title “Why McDonald's went broke in Bolivia,” where they try to somehow explain the reasons that led Bolivians to still prefer pies to hamburgers.

T h e d o c u m e n t a r y includes interviews with cooks, sociologists, nutr i t ionists, educators, historians and more, where there is a general

agreement: the rejection is neither to the hamburgers nor to t h e i r t a s t e . T h e rejection is in the minds and mentality of Bolivians. Everything indicates that “fast food” is literally the o p p o s i t e o f a Bolivian's conception of how to prepare a meal.

In Bolivia, the food to be good requires, in addition to taste, care, and hygiene, a lot of preparation time. This is how a consumer values the quality of what goes into the stomach, also by the amount of time it took to make the meal. Fast food is not for these people, the Americans concluded. (I'm not sure how they work that out, what's the biggest export from Bolivia?)

Glenn Maxwell lauds Indian Premier League preparation for pressure cooker situations

those games and just try and deal with it as best I could.

"I didn't think about it too much. It was just one of those things, you have to take it in your stride.

"A lot of guys go for big money in the IPL, it's very lucrative that competition. I wasn't alone.

"There were a lot of other guys that went for similar amounts of money.

Australia's million-do l la r man Glenn Maxwel l says the Indian Premier League has prepared him for every pressure-filled scenario in cricket.

M a x w e l l , w h o i n February landed a $1 million IPL deal with the Mumbai Indians, has had to deal with the burdens that come with such a price tag.

But the 25-year-old, who played only a handful of IPL games, says he was able to overcome that mental hurdle with the help of high profile team-mates Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

"I was probably lucky I only p l a y e d t h r e e g a m e s i n t h a t tournament," Maxwell said.

"I didn't have to live up to too much. I just had to play my role during

"I was in good company at the Mumbai Indians.

"We had Punter (Ponting), Sachin and a few of the legends of the game in our team.

"It was nice talking to them. I just soaked them up for everything they had. It was a very enjoyable time."

M a x w e l l s a y s playing in the IPL and the

Champions League ensures he will not be fazed by any cricketing scenario.

"We're very lucky that we've got the opportunity to play in the IPL and the Champions League where you get used to these crowds," he said.

"When you come over here you're not overawed by it. It's just another day at the office."

Ireland holds off Australian comeback to win first International Rules Test in Cavan

Austral ia fought back in the second half of the first International Rules Test in Cavan but Ireland's superior round-ball skil ls proved decisive with the hosts winning 57-35.

Ireland was first to score with a three-point over off a free kick within the first minute of play before Geelong's Steven Motlop, one of the Indigenous All Stars' best on Sunday (AEDT), opened Australia's account.

The tourists clearly struggled to control the round ball off the boot while the Gaelic footballers consistently curved it through the posts for overs.

Australia trailed 17-4 at quarter-time and 28-9 at half-time.

But things improved in the third quarter following a rev-up from coach

Michael O'Loughlin.Ireland's Zach Tuohy gave the

crowd reason to roar when he scored the first 6-point goal of the Test at the 11-minute mark.

However a few minutes later Jake Neade replied for the All Stars to give Australia hope.

That was followed quickly by overs from Lewis Jetta and Alwyn Davey to get the All Stars back within 12 points at the final break.

Motlop could have closed the margin to five points just five minutes into the final quarter but he kicked the ball into the top bar from a few metres out.

Mathew Stokes soon scored an over but Ireland r e s p o n d e d a l m o s t immediately.

Australia failed to convert further chances while Ireland made the most of their entries into the forward line to gain some breathing room yet again.

The match was played before a crowd of 17,600 - lower than the hoped for 25,000.

Australia needs to win the second and final Test at Croke Park in Dublin next Sunday by a big margin if they are to win the series on aggregate.

Ireland won the last encounter between the two countries in Australia two years ago 2-0.

What's the place of birth and citizenship?A woman gave birth to a child on board a British Airways jet flying from London to Boston.

The pilot received permission to land in Nova Scotia when it became clear there was a delivery in progress, but the baby was born before the plane could land. As far as what goes on this child's birth certificate next to “Place of Birth” and of what country this child can claim citizenship, it all depends on who you ask.

In th is case , we've got a mother described by the British Airways crew as Egyptian and traveling on a U.S. passport, and a plane that took off in Britain bound for the

United States that landed in Canada. So where is this child from?

Almost every country in the world, as well as the U n i t e d N a t i o n s , h a s p r o c e d u r e s a n d recommendations for how to properly classify the

geographic details of an in-air birth. The U n i t e d N a t i o n s considers a child born in-flight to have been born in the airplane's registered c o u n t r y. S o m e countries point to the city where the c h i l d f i r s t disembarked the plane as the place of birth, and to the airplane's registered country as the place

of citizenship. Of course, citizenship

and birthplace are two different topics, citizenship is typically a larger issue and may require some paperwork, while writing a child's birthplace on a birth certificate is often a less legally significant consideration.

Australia coach Tim Sheens warned his team that England will be determined to make amends for its embarrassing defeat by Italy when the Rugby League World Cup gets underway this weekend.

Sheens watched from the stands on Saturday as Italy sealed a surprise 15-14 win over Steve McNamara's men in a World Cup warm-up fixture.

But, rather than revel in the hosts' discomfort, Sheens believes it was a bad result for the Kangaroos because England, who fielded an experimental line-up against Italy, will now be even more motivated to beat Australia in the tournament opener in Cardiff on Saturday.

"I know Steve will be disappointed but, to me, a side that's embarrassed is a dangerous side," Sheens said at the official World Cup launch at Old Trafford.

Australia is one of only three of the 14 competing World Cup teams not to play a warm-up match, but Sheens stands by his decision to keep his players fresh.

"We played Papua New Guinea as a Prime Minister's XIII the week before the grand final so I had guys like Sammy Thaiday, the Morris brothers, Corey Parker and Greg Bird involved and the rest played either late into the semis or the grand final," Sheens said.

"All these trials, with unlimited interchange, they're basically training runs. There's contact but I wouldn't say it's the sort of contact you have in a Test match. Most sides play to protect themselves a bit.

"For England it was a trial and it's a different mentality. You had 20 stripped for England and 24 for Italy.

"I'm not really concerned about the result. I went there to look at a number of things. I'm still not sure what Steve's going to do, but I wanted to see a couple of combinations and the style of the game they were playing.

"I saw what I wanted to see, but, as far as the result is concerned, that's for England to worry about, not me. My concern

is to make sure that we're on song for our first game."

Sheens arrived with his 24-man squad in Manchester nearly a week ago and they will move base to Cardiff on Tuesday to finalise their preparations for the clash with England.

"So far, so good," Sheens said. "We came over early to make sure we got our feet on the ground a n d t o m a k e s u r e everybody is in good shape physically.

"We've had a couple of nights where we've got to know each other, but it's the business end this week and

Scientists tap cow burps for natural gasArgentine scientists have found a way to t rans form the gas created by the bovine digestive system into fuel, an innovation that could curb greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

Using a system of valves and pumps, the experimental technique developed by Argentina's N a t i o n a l I n s t i t u t e o f Agricultural Technology (INTA) channels the digestive gases from bovine stomach cavities through a tube and into a tank.

The gases which otherwise are commonly known as burps, or "eruptos" in Spanish are then processed to separate methane from other gases such as carbon dioxide.

Methane is the main component of natural gas, used to fuel everything from cars to power plants.

" O n c e y o u g e t i t compressed, it's the same as having natural gas," said Guillermo Berra, head of INTA's animal physiology group.

"As an energy source it is

not very practical at the moment, but if you look ahead to 2050, when fossil fuel reserves are going to be in trouble, it is an alternative," he said.

Each head of cattle emits between 250 and 3 0 0 l i t r e s o f p u r e methane a day, enough e n e r g y t o k e e p a refrigerator running for 24 hours.

Argentina is one of the world's top beef exporters, with around 51

million heads of cattle. Gases emitted from those animals account for 30 percent of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions, according to INTA, with methane having 23 times the global warming effect as carbon dioxide.

"This is also a way to mitigate that," Berra said.

Webb Simpson scores fourth career PGA victory in Las Vegas

F o r m e r U S O p e n c h a m p i o n W e b b Simpson cruised to his fourth career victory on the PGA Tour, securing a six-shot win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

Four ahead of the chasing pack at the start of play, Simpson did not allow his challengers to get any closer than three strokes before tightening his grip on the title with three birdies in the last six h o l e s a t T P C Summerlin.

On another calm and sunny day of ideal scoring conditions in the h igh Nevada d e s e r t , S i m p s o n closed with a 5-under-par 66 to post a 24-under total of 260 in the second event of the PGA Tour's 2013-14 season.

"It means the world," Simpson said after sinking a curling 25-footer for par at the last to earn the winner's cheque for $US1,080,000 ($1.12 million) and his first victory on the US circuit since the 2012 US Open.

"This year, I feel like I have gotten better, I just hadn't got the win. I was close at Hilton Head but we were working hard and it's just nice to finish the year off with a 'W'."

S impson, who was embraced by his wife Dowd as

he walked off the 18th green, lost out in a play-off with Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell at Hilton Head in April.

Fellow American Jason Bohn bogeyed the last for a 66 to share second place at 18-under wi th Japan's Ryo Ishikawa (65), with another American, Charley Hoffman, a further stroke back in fourth

after firing a joint best-of-the-day 64.

But it was Simpson who once again commanded the spotlight, having led the tournament since Friday's second round.

In pursuit of his first PGA Tour victory since June last year, he made a fast start with two early birdies, draining a 16-footer at the par-4 second and a 15-footer at the par-four third to stretch his lead to six shots.

Though Luke Guthrie briefly trimmed that advantage to five with his seventh birdie of the day at the 15th, Simpson coolly sank a 14-foot birdie putt at the par-5 ninth to reach the

turn at 22-under, six ahead.

Simpson had played rock-solid golf since starting the round and it came as something of a surprise when he three-putted from long range to bogey the par-4 12th for his lead to be briefly cut to three shots over Bohn.

However, he immediately rebounded with a birdie at the

par-5 13th, where he sank an eight-footer, to regain a four-stroke cushion.

"I was playing good, solid golf," Simpson said of his fo rm be fo re h is unexpected slip-up at the 12th.

"I didn't look at the leaderboards all day but the course was drying out and I knew it was playing tough.

"That three-putt there kind of set me back a little bit but it was nice to birdie 13, and then made a couple more birdies coming in, which was a good feeling."

Simpson struck a brilliant tee shot to just four feet at the par-3 14th but lipped out with his birdie attempt before picking up another shot at the par-4 15th where he pitched to within two feet of the cup from in front of the green.

Another birdie followed at the par-5 16th, where he reached the green in two and comfortably two-putted, and he parred the last two holes to wrap up a commanding win.

Indian sage dreams of gold to save economy, government starts digging

The Indian government is digging for treasure after a civic-minded Hindu village sage dreamt that 1,000 tons of gold was buried under a ruined palace, and wrote to tell the central bank about it.

The state Archaeological Survey of India has sent a team of archaeologists to the village of DaundiaKhera in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. They are due to start digging on Friday, Praveen Kumar Mishra, the head archaeologist in the state said.

Yogi Swami ShobhanSarkar says the gold he dreamt of belonged to a nineteenth-century ruler, Rao Ram Bux Singh. He says he wants it in government hands to help India recover from an economic crisis.

"I cried the day I realized that I n d i a i s g o i n g t o c o l l a p s e economically," the seer said. The dead ruler's spirit has been roaming the palace and asking for the gold to be

dug up, he added."It is a hidden treasure for the

country."Not all Hindu leaders are so

keen to put bullion into the Reserve Bank of India's vaults. Temples sitting on about half as much gold as in Fort Knox are resisting efforts by the central bank to audit their holdings.

Indians buy as much as 2.3 tons of gold, on average, every day the weight of a small elephant and what they don't give to the gods is

mostly hoarded.That is costing the

economy dear, since India has few gold mines. Gold imports totalled $54 billion in the year ending on March 31, 2013, a major factor in swelling the current account deficit and undermining the rupee.

Swami Sarkar's dream haul of 1,000 tons would be enough to replace all of India's imports for a year and would be worth at least $40 billion. The archaeologists plan to dig

two 100-square-metre blocks beside the palace. Mishra, however, warned that there was as yet no proof that any treasure lay beneath the soil of DaundiaKhera village.

"We are still searching for the exact location and whether there is any treasure. It is all in the future," he said. "We often just find pottery and metal antiquities, like agricultural tools or kitchen tools."
